- networking a desktop that was on a domain, now a workgroup.
-
I'm trying to add an old desktop from my business (XP SP2, was on a domain)
as print server, financial computer at home for my wife. I cannot get it to
play nicely with the wireless network (on a workgroup). It recognizes the
laptop perfectly, access files, everything. Buy the laptop will only
recognice the desktop if I go looking at Workgroups in Explorer, and it will
not allow access to any files or resources. something to the effect of "user
not having access permission". I have removed its domain information and put
it on the workgroup, enabled simple file sharing. Am I missing some magic of
user access when I switched from the domain to the workgroup?

- WMP doesn't recognize my MP3 anymore!
-
I have version 11.0.5721.5268 and for some reason it won't recognize my
ZVUEspirit MP3 player anymore. It used to work just fine, that's how I put
what I have on there now, but now it can't find it. My computer knows the
MP3 is connected, but not WMP. I tried everything the Help files told me to
do to no avail. I had version 10 when I first synched it, but my ONYX MP3
was also synched using 10 and it works just fine on 11. Can anyone help
before I bite my computer in half from sheer frustration?

- Powerpoint 2007 SP2 crashing when importing data
-
My user's are experiencing crashes when importing data from another program.
From Word or Excel, and it may be multiple issues. No error, the program just
locks up for 5-10 minutes, and then crashes.
Sometimes, office-kb975021-fullfile-x86-glb.exe fixes importing from Excel.
Other times, MicrosoftFixit50352.msi will fix importing from Word.
Other times, nothing will fix this.
From what I'm reading in some basic Google searches, this may have come up
with one of the updates included with SP2. Some suggestion even call for
removing SP2, either with a utility of manually. This helps a lot of people.
My problem is that at this business, SP2 is required to work alongside
another piece of software we use. So uninstalling is so far not an option.
Can anyone with possibly more info on this provide the one patch in SP2 that
messed with this to begin with?
Or any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

- Automating email account creation with usernames
-
How do I go about creating a script or registry key,
that automatically sets up an Outlook Express / Outlook 2007 email account
for any user that logs on the computer;
with their username as the email address?
Eg. User A logs on, and so will have an email account set up for them
automatically,
with the details:
Email address: UserA@mydomain.com
SMTP/POP Server: main@mydomain.com
I have tried creating a registry key that is run by AUTOEXEC.bat in WinXP,
the key details seem to not work.
Registry key details:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager\Accounts]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account
Manager\Accounts\00000001]
"IMAP User Name"="%*USERNAME%"
"POP3 User Name"="%*USERNAME%"
"SMTP Display Name"="%*USERNAME%"
"SMTP Email Address"="%*USERNAME%@mydomain.com"
"SMTP User Name"="%*USERNAME%"
Thanking you in advance for any information regarding this issue.

- PDF conversion question
-
I recently had to replace my computer and printer. My new computer has
Windows 7 which I am slowly getting used to. I installed my old Office 2003
program on the compuer. At some time in the past I was able to change my
printer settings to allow pdf conversion and printing of Word documents.
Unfortunately I do not remember how I did this or where I got the
instructions. I need to do the same on my new system. As far as I can tell
Windows 7 didn't come with Adobe Acrobat and I think I have to have it in
order to convert to pdf. Is it still a free download? Can someone tell me
how to enable my printer to convert to pdf? Thank you so much for any input.

- Windows XP Backup - Email address book
-
On my XP, I use other software for main backups but for quick small backups
of personal settings such as Documents and web Favourites, I use XP's own
backup. Can anyone please tell me where in the backup setup I can find my
email address book and current email folders? At present I export the address
book to my desktop which I can then see in the backup setup page but surely
there is a box somewhere to tick. I can't find it.

I get an email. Almost instantly another email "arrives" with the same
subject but containing the following text:
--- begin quote
Hello
How are you doing recently?
I would like to introduce you a very good company which i knew. Their
website is www.ebakm.com They can offer
you all kinds of electronical products which you need, like Laptops ,GPS ,TV
LCD,Cell Phones,PS3,MP3/4,Watch etc........
Please take some time to have a check ,there must be something you 'd like

Hope you have a good mood in shopping from their company !

--- end quote
I suspect it's a virus existing locally because the headers make no sense
and SpamCop agrees that the header is incomplete/missing.
Resident Avast has never complained and online scanning by both McCaffee and

It's a mystery.
Thanks for your help.

- Maximum Character Limit on the USerAgent String in IE 6
-
Hi,
I am trying to access a web application which only supports IE version 5.01
and above. In order to perform this check we use USerAgent string to check
the IE version and then allow the users to access the application.
While testing we found out that on Windows XP IE 6.0 when the user agent is
beyong 256 character length, the rest of the useragent string is getting
truncated and it is only returning Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0;).
However this is not the case with IE 7.0 and IE 8.0.
Is this a known issue in IE 6.0 and do this have any workaroound?
Any pointers to this or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks & regards,
Ashwin
