Windows' built-in defragmenter has not been doing too well. Tried running
Defraggler http://www.piriform.com/defraggler
This is working much better and gives a graphical window with the progress.
What I see is that C:\pagefile.sys is hugely fragmented (1.5G and 500
fragments). This file seems to not to be able to be defragmented. Sort of
makes sense since it is an important system file.
Is there a way to get the pagefile to defragment?
Also tried UltraDefrag http://ultradefrag.sourceforge.net/
which has a boot mode operation that can be enabled to defrag system files
before they are locked. This does not seem to be working properly. It does
not seem to be doing anything with the pagefile (even though it is in the
explicit file list). Perhaps I have not found the correct command line
switches yet.
Both Defraggler and UltraDefrag were recommended by Kim Komando in her
newsletter www.komando.com

I bought the computer from a computer knowledgeable person (which I
really am not) who had installed Vista Business back in October. The
computer originally came with Vista Home Premium. Today I downloaded
some microsoft updates and was prompted to restart the computer, which I
did. I didn't pay attention to how much got loaded while attempting to
shut down but after it restarted, windows wouldn't start. I spent all
day today (starting at about noon) trying to figure it out. I've tried
everything that the internet forums had to offer (using my laptop) short
of replacing the hard drive. I don't have a Vista cd or the repair cd,
although I downloaded the repair disk that microsoft put out. Finally at
the command prompt on the repair disk, I used the Bootrec commands, all
4 I think after reading about them on a website about an hour ago. Now
it actually restored Vista Premium, which I didn't even know was still
on this computer, and Business still won't start. I'm at my wits end
trying to figure it out. Anybody have any ideas for me? Oh and I still
have all my files and everything, just not on the same OS?

My sons toshiba laptop just turned off and won't restart not matter what I've
tried.
I tried starting in safe mode and just about every other option. I can boot
from the CD but it just returns back to Launch Startup Repair or Start
Windows Normally.
This is the error:
Status: 0xc00000e9
Unexpected I/O Error
And says it could be due to a recent change in hardware or software
He says that he hasn't done any updates to anything.
So does this sound like a hardware problem?
Thanks much for your input.
After my computer is running for a while sometimes I notice a watermark that
says my copy of WIN7 is not genuine. Something about build 7600. This is a
new hard drive with a clean copy of WIN7 from a retail box. I already
registered it also, successfully. Why do I get this "watermark" message in
the bottom right hand corner. Never happens when you first boot up. Just
appear later after extended use. Well it's a dell computer with 2.6 amd dual
core processor and 4G memory. 250g hdd. Thanks in advance.
My favorite feature of Windows Vista is the fact that everything is updated
and it has interesting things like the Areo experience. I enjoy using
Windows Vista.
Help, I changed the name of (C) drive and the network computer names did
not reflect it so I went back in and when the computer said if you do this
your owner of the HD. I pressed the button and now I can't even receive
windows updates. The following error message appears on bootup also (shown
below). I have no idea how to reverse this. I may have deleted the files
names to remove them thinking they would be in deleted items. But they were
not there. This is in Windows Vista Can anyone help me???
Sincerely,
Toooooooooooooo Snoopy on my computer!!

I use Robocopy to backup music and photos on a external Western Digital 1TB

initially. Now, the backup for music files is failing with :

This is the command line using UNC addressing:
Robocopy C:\Users\Owner\Music\recordings\

I think the owner of this folder is incorrect - (nobody (Unix User\nobody) -

Nor can I change it with DOS CMD run as administrator:

Does someone have a suggestion for me?

The aftermath of a trojan attack (Vista Guardian) has resulted in the file
association of exe files being lost and hence an inability to run exe files.
I am quite convinced that the trojan is now dead, but I can't figure out how
to fix the damage.
If I could get into the registry I could fix it, but of course regedit is an
exe file so I can't run it.
I've tried tricks like running it from command line or from inside a batch
file but with no joy.
I have also made a copy and called it regedit.com. This looked promising as
Vista asked for user permission to run the program, but then nothing. It
gets killed off before it starts.
I am not familiar with the particular machine, nor am I very familiar with
Vista and I am now at a loss as to how to proceed. Any bright ideas?
many thanks

Under XP I could copy application shortcuts to a menu that you would see
above programs when you first click start. I would put it under all users >
start menu folder
is there anything similar in vista (and windows 7) when I am using the vista
/ windows 7 start menu instead of the XP style Start menu?
thanks.

I just burned some folders containing mostly JPG files (and a few AVI
files). The DVD has a capacity of 4.7GB - but it only held 2.4GB of
these folders - and the DVD is now full. Why didn't I get the full
4.7GB capacity. I used Nero 9 and chose the Write Data option.
Back in 2008, I had posted about problems (instability) with Vista Home
basic and using an HP Scanjet 4370. Problem was that solution center kept
trying to re-install. Couldn't do an uninstall.
Solution is archived at
http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windows-vista-general/174543-hp-scanner-scanjet-4370-uninstall.html
Recent update:
Program yet again messed up and I tried to go to the HP 4370 site to get a
new program update. To my dismay, almost all support for this scanner had
been removed. (only a simple patch remained)
Remembering that the G3010 and SJ 4370 were of the same family, I went to
the G3010 support page and downloaded the latest full support program.
Worked nicely and it properly removed the prior troublesome stuff.

They even have support for Win7 there.
HP products are pretty good. HP support leaves much to be desired. Their
live support personnel have let me down just about every time. It's only if
you can get past the first two or three support levels, can you actually
find someone who can really help.

PowerPoint Viewer is not working. Don't know if it ever worked on this
setup. Clicking on the icon produces no reaction except, possibly, a little
hard drive activity. Same if I right click and try to open a PPT file
(associated with PPV). Same file opens fine in Open Office.
I uninstalled PPV and reinstalled after a reboot but there is no
improvement.
Any help appreciated.

Vista Basic sp2 x32.
According to Task Scheduler - System Restore the last time ran was =
2/16/2010. But, I see no restore point
created there. Although it is set to run at startup I see no restore =
system check points except for one on 2/13.
Other than that the last few restore points are 2/10 and 2/8.
Why isn't SR creating restore points when it's scheduled to???
Please don't tell me to do it manually.
Maybe it's just one more thing you don't get with Vista Basic.
I want to know why this is occurring.
I have plenty of disk space.

Hi, I have a problem with my printer. I am getting a message saying that
the spooler subsystem has stopped working and closed. I have tried manually
restarting the spooler but I then get a interactive services message, saying
that there is a message that cannot be viewed in windows, I click the view
message button and I get a blue screen with a black window then I am told
the it does not need to show me the message.
I am running Vista SP2 64bit

Thanks in advance.

I have installed Windows Vista twice on the same PC. I'm now unable to
access my work or get on the internet.
All was working OK with just a minor problem with a conflict of loading
Adobe Acrobat 5, 'I thought that I could correct this by re-loading the
Vista Software...wrong'
Anyway, I'm now trying to correct things....I have tried system restore
'no good' I have no back-up and I'm a bit lost!
I want to remove the latest installation of Vista and revert back to
the original. Can you please HELP?

Every time I open windows mail, it stops responding for 30 seconds to a

Even sometimes when I move from one message to another it behaves like that
too.

I'm having a disagreement with a friend about how System Restore works....
Bottom line... if you go back to a previous restore point -- do you lose
(are they removed) any document files (whether jpg, doc, whatever) you've
created/saved since then -- or does it only effect system / application
files?
Is there a good place on the net you could point me to read more about this?
Thanks in advance.

There is a warning about Windows information safety centre in system tray.
It said my antivirus program is incompatible for monitoring and Windows
Defender conflicts with my Symantec End Point Protection program. I tried
to disable the monitoring and Windows Defender but the warning is still
there. Can someone advise me what should I do. I have been using Symantec
for over 1 year without any issue but suddenly have such issue.

Thanks in advance for help.
Lately every time I download an update from windows update, I have to
restore to the previous point before the update.
I said lately because the last 4 or 5 times I been updated my windows, after
that I have problems with my wireless, and the only way to make works again
is restore to the previous point.
I hope this is not hard to fix.
Thanks again,
Willie

Hi,
My wifes laptop ( Vista home premium) has suddenly developed a problem
with the sound volume. Every time she boots up,the volume has decreased
slightly and then decreases further when she boots again next time.
It has worked OK for nearly one year now but just developed this problem
a few days ago following MS updates.
Any advice to correct this would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

836 wpm, my dictation speed with 100% accuracy,
according to Andy's test site below:
http://www.now1technologies.com/typetest
The results there are posted under my name
of Mark Conrad.
Now perhaps Andy will stop lying about me
being afraid to run that speed test,
at a site he himself selected.
Andy is paralyzed, in his brain, that is.
The poor stupid thing actually believes that
a test DESIGNED FOR TYPISTS can be applied
to measuring Speech Recognition "Words Per Minute",
as in "836 wpm".
Andy is not too bright, y'know.
Mark-
I configured a new dell laptop at first turn on, Windows 7 home premium.
Got some problem with windows Media Player: it's not clear how to play
internet radio audio streams: player don't recognize .PLS files, I didn't
find "Play URL" and "Play bookmark" options, seems WMP menu bar disabled by
default, that is highly inconvenient, what is sense to disable menu bar? I
used Winamp player on my old pc and it is far more convenient.
Hmm, Andy is right, we both had trouble with the
email address of that Typing Test website.
I managed to struggle along at a puny 836 wpm
according to that website, with accuracy of 100%
of course - - - results posted there under my name
of Mark Conrad.
This points up what I have said all along, one can not
rely on a "typing test" to show accurate "wpm" speed
when it comes to Speech Recognition.
Mark-
Maybe not a Vista thing. I'm trying to print 4 pages of the same document on
one sheet of A - i.e.. 4 x A6 on one page.
I am choosing 'Multiple pages per sheet' from the Page Handling>Page Scaling
drop down menu and 4 pages per sheet..
However the preview window shows only one page in the top left corner, and
this is what actually prints instead of 4.
Can anyone help or point me to a more suitable group pse?
I have two versions of Eudora on my PC but only one (Eudora 8 beta) is
recognized in file folders that contain *.jpg files (as of today).
Before today, I would highlight a JPG and click on Email at the top of
the open folder. Eudora 7.1 would come up and all I had to do was put
in an email address. I should say that I use Eudora 7.1 with two sets
of data - one for me and one for my wife. However, my wife's version
would come up which is what I want. As of today, Eudora 8 beta comes
up when I click on Email. I have no idea how the association changed.
I also don't know why my wife's version of Eudora 7.1 used to come up
instead of mine. There must be a way to reset the association. I
tried resetting the association in Internet Explorer - but only Eudora
8 beta is available as a choice. That's another problem. Why isn't
Eudora 7.1 a choice in file associations in Internet Explorer 8? I'm
sure there is a simple solution for both problems.
I've installed a 320 gb disk in place of my full-up 80 gb disk. To make room
for W7. Now I'm formatting it into C: and D:, running from a CD. But since
the CD is D:, the 2nd partition became E:. Big problem! I am using
software from StorageCraft to restore everything - boot record and all. But
my 2nd partition must be D: for my installed software to work. How can I
change the partition letter assignments? TIA, Paul
This is a clean install of Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Got all the updates
done. But now, when it comes to installing SP2, its just a no-go. I did
the SP2 through Windows Update and when it would get to 98% it would say
it failed the install and it would revert back and try on the reboot,
reboot, same thing. The error message Windows Update showed was Error
Code 80070059.
I then tried the standalone SP2. Same result. But the error message it
gave, I forgot to write down but when it rebooted from failed it opened
a window about unable to open another process or some such thing.
I've tried the System Update Readiness Tool. and then tried to SP2
standalone again, no joy.
I've tried the sfc /scannow to see if that had any effect and nope, it
says all is fine.
Any ideas?
