windows xp & firewall. by HANGMAN

Help please--My wife's thinkpad has xp home, serv pack3. No matter how
many times I enable windows firewall it always is turned off when I
reboot. I go to security center and set it. I also set it thru my
wireless connection. But sure enough when I reboot I get the little red
shield in the tray telling me no firewall. Any ideas?
Thankyou for any and all help.

What security software (antivirus, etc) is installed and is it up to date?

The firewall, protection and recovery componets are a popular target
for malicious software, so try to eliminate malicious software first:
Perform some scans for malicious software, then fix any remaining
issues:
Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:
Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/
They can be uninstalled later if desired.
Are you now or have you ever run any kind or Norton, Symantec, McAfee,
Spybot, ZoneAlarm products?
FYI:
If you are using another firewall (it is a user choice), it is
generally not a good idea to run the Windows firewall at the same time
- pick one or the other. You should run some kind of firewall though.
If you have another firewall and like it better, you can leave the
Windows firewall off and stop the reminder message about it.

No I ran mbam earlier this morning and didn't find any bugs.. Yes i used
to use macafee, however i uninstalled it completely and installed
microsoft security essentials. I have other machines and this is not an
issue with firewall. The other machines are configured the same. Just
this laptop.

Try this:
Start | Run
In the Open box, type:
services.msc
Click OK. Scroll down to Windows Firewall.
What is the Startup Type?
Also, more information is needed.
When did this situation begin? Are you aware of anything specific
happening immediately preceding when this first started happening?
You can also configure a Clean Boot (after re-enabling the Firewall of
course):
Start | Run
In the Open box, type:
msconfig
Click OK.
In the General tab, click Selective Startup. Click OK and reboot.
Is the Windows Firewall on?
(Remember to undo the Clean Boot -- by selecting Normal Startup in the
General Tab -- when you are finished troubleshooting.)

The startup type is automatic under services. Well there is alittle more
to my problem here--My wife is outa town so I thought i'd clean up her
laptop. First I notice I could not boot without the little red shield
coming up. It says no firewall can be detected. Then I notice that she
could no longer see the shared folders on my desktop (configured the same)
cable broadband with a linksys router. It's gota be related because in
services it says "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection sharing (ICS). I
can see her laptop shared folders on the network but she can't see mine.
She's done something here.
After rebooting after choosing selective startup the firewall service
shows it is running however when I check the Security ctr it is not
enabled and the little red shield is there again.
bummer.
