• Autoplay for Pictures Not Populated
  • I inserted my XD card in to my card reader today and the autoplay pop up window asking what I wanted Windows to do was blank. For Video, Music and Mixed content the options are there but not for Pictures - it is just blank. I have tried running autofix.exe but this has not fixed it. Any ideas? Is this a Microsoft problem or has something else caused this? It worked fine until today. Thanks.

• extracting data from an old to new hard drive - no data appearing.
  • there are several (and better) ways to do this, but here is the reality: i recently installed a new hard drive after my previous one got locked into an endless reboot cycle. i found no solution to help with this, so i decided to start from scratch. i installed a REAL version of xp onto my new hd to get a way from the oem version that was installed on my old hd. so now my new hd is doing fine, BUT i wish to take data off of my old hd and transfer it to the new one. i installed my old drive as a slave on my pc and tried to open it, but to know avail. i will mention that this drive still has my oem xp o/s on it - which is probably why it no data is visible - it is encrypted from a different copy of xp (the oem one). and i think that this results in all my data files mostly showing as empty. however one doc folder pops up a 'access denied' window. going back to the issue of my old hd locking up in a rebooting cycle, i am aware that viruses or malware can cause this to happen. my hope was to transfer over my data and then scan the old hd for anything that might be causing the rebooting to happen. but this is a separate issue from the data extraction effort i need to focus on. any ideas how to 'de-cloak' my data from the previous hd, so i can transfer my data to the new one? thanks in advance for your suggestions.
• Access Denied
  • My WinXP computer is stuck in a reboot loop from the Advanced Start-up options menu (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Last Known Good Config, etc). I removed my hard drive and connected it to another WinXP machine with a USB/IDE adapter kit. When I try to access my User Account, which is password protected, I get an Access Denied pop-up. I want to save my data before reformatting the hard drive. Is there any around this Access Denied problem? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is there a way to access the old registy using the remote registy call call it WinXP1.reg ? If I were to install XP from scratch, export my registry into a file WinXP2.reg, import WinXP1.reg, and then overwrite the latest from WinXP2.reg, would I get a useable system

  • I am running Windows XP w/AVG antivirus. I somehow got a virus that shows up through security warnings telling me my computer is infected. I can not navigate to any programs such as spybot or malwarebytes' anti-malware w/o a pop up box telling me "the application cannot be executed. the file mbam.exe is infected. do you want to activate your antivirus software now?". I also can not run my task manager or registry to try to remove this virus. the threat is called WIN32/NUQEL.E -- any help would be very much appreciated. Sissy Sniffen
• FAT(32) media sometimes accessible, sometimes not -- strange solution
  • I wrote earlier of a problem on one machine with XP Home SP3. It would not read floppies of FAT32-formatted thumb drives that were readable on other machines. I could format a floppy on this machine, but DIR claimed that it did not have a recognizable file system. RMB -> Properties showed the file system as RAW. Now I find that this happens only if the machine is booted with no FAT32-formatted media attached. If I boot up with a FAT32-formatted external drive or thumb drive in place, it can read them and will continue to be able to read FAT(32) media even when the one(s) present at boot time has/have been detached. Is this behavior normal? If not, how do I remedy it? Perce

  • I ran my XP CD to repair an Explorer problem and now I've gained an operating system. When I switch on it now gives me the choice of selecting (1) 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional' or (2) 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup' Unfortunatly it defaults to the (2) unless I select (1). How can I remove (2) so I go back to going straight into XP please? Thanks Rod
• Cleaning after a crash
  • Hello to all Few days ago I lost the content of my second hard drive, an external one I named "D". It was wiped so clean that even the disk partition gone and it can't even be opened. However, Since my "C" drive is smaller then the huge D, I used to install many programs on D instead of C as usual. Obviously Windows registered all the programs, regardless of their location, on the ADD/REMOVE page. I want to clean the ADD/REMOVE of all the lost programs but windows will not do it as the programs are not there to be removed. I remember long ago, a nice MVP produced a tiny program that do just that, removing dead lines from the ADD/REMOVE but since I lost all my data, I can't remember who it was. Does any one know any thing on this topic? The same goes for the registry that no doubts is full of obsolete entries that need cleaning. I know, it is not hard to get a registry cleaning programs now a days but I have bitter experience with these full programs and I need something partial or a bit of know how to get into the registry and do some safe cleaning. • Can't log into Windows XP.
  • I had a virus on my computer called 'Internet Security 2010' which i tried to remove with 'AVG Free 9.0'. My anti-virus software required a restart in order to remove all of the virus's. I restarted and now when i try to log into my profile it logs in for 3 seconds and logs out before I can do anything. I tried logging into every advanced login option, IE safemode /w command prompt and all of the other options. I can not log in with administrator either. I read some things online that said to boot from the Windows xp CD. I tried this and got a message on the blue screen saying my computer is infected and it must shut down to prevent further damage. Is there anyway to bypass the login screen or get to a command prompt to reformat? PLEASE HELP!@@!!@ -Chris

  • My son's computer currently runs Windows XP Pro SP3 and he's looking to go to the student version of Windows 7 Ultimate. We've run the advisor and the machine is more than capable of handling the change but we're a bit baffled by some conflicting information on the http://www.software4students.co.uk/ website. The Microsoft Upgrade Path Chart shows that a move from Windows XP to Windows 7 Ultimate can be done, NOT as an in-place upgrade, but ONLY as a "custom install". A custom install is also known as a clean install and can be used to completely replace your existing operating system or you can perform a custom (clean) install if your computer does not have an existing OS or you want to multi-boot. The software4students website says this: *For the academic license version to install correctly, customers are advised to have a previous Windows OS currently installed on their computer or laptop.* *S4S & Microsoft advise customers to choose the upgrade DVD's "Custom Installation" option when available rather than "In-Place Upgrade" and to back up all important files before beginning.* The two paragraphs above seem (to me at least) to conflict with each other. When installing an OS, I've always booted from the CD, formatted the hard drive and then done the installation - that's what I consider a clean install, or in Win7-speak, presumably a custom install. Can anyone confirm - do you have to have an existing OS (which I would consider as an in-place upgrade) or can you do a clean install (freshly formatted hard drive) to install the student/academic version?   • I've been interested in dabbling with it for a very long time. I've read what info I have and it is not clear if it can be installed on NTFS. I'm running XP pro sp3+ on that. Oddly, I can see the files on FAT32 partition. \I did see in the notes that virtual pc can access multiple drives or OS installed on another drive. Can a FAT 32 OS be installed within virtual PC? -- Norman
• xp does not boot after virus cleanup and repair
  • My xp pro Dell 4550 with a 60 GB IDE hard disk got infected by a virus and would not boot - always got a blue screen during boot. So took out thr hard disk and hooked it up to a laptop using an ide to usb adapter and ran Mcafee virus checker which quarantined quite a few files. I then put thedisk inthre original Dell and tried to repair the installation using a Win XP installation CD. The machine does not boot at all. After POST I get a black screen that remains so for hours. I did a chkdsk /r but that made nodifference. I tried hooking the disk to the laptop again but now it shows up as an uninitialized disk in disk management and I cannot see the contents at all. What are my choices otherr than to reinstall XP. What can I do to save my data? If I use fixmbr in the recovery console will I lose my file system on the disk? Thanks

  • Caught them this time. It might have been 3 times in six months instead of just twice. As soon as I saw the pie chart and the green flahing lights, I new I had innocently clicked on a family photo that hackers had installed a malware / virus/ Rip - my- harddrve to hell with interthreading technology......Black screen of death. It then shows itself as Internet Security 2010. Buy Now for 59,95 for a three year licence. Notice the comma , not decimal point in the price. They were from Overseas. My Question to you is how do i stop this from happening again? AT&T says from India "we are not responsible" MCafee doesnt stop it. Trend Didn't stop it with Internet Security 2007. Webroot Didn't either. What is a non techie to do? I am NUMB. Any Suggestions other than to bury this thing in the back yard?

  • Hi, I turned on my HP laptop this morning and I received a message saying that there was some issues with. the system was going to run a chdsk and fix it. It deleted some file but could not do the following step due to insufficient memory space. I turned off the computer and restarted it and I got the message "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. I followed instruction by restarting the system but I got the same message. It tells me to follow the steps "Disable or uninstall any anti-virus...." but I can not do any of that since no matter what key I hit (8, 11 or 12) or the option I choose (start windows normal, start with last correct version), I always end up on the blue screen.   • Got an existing PC that is 64-bit compatible, but I've been running 32-bit XP on it for ages. Now it's getting time to leave the XP behind. Didn't bother with Vista, like most people. I'm going to be going to Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Now, I'm aware that there isn't any official migration path between XP and Win7, and especially not between 32-bit and 64-bit. What I need to know is if I install Win7 to the same partition as XP, will it overwrite XP, or will it install to a different directory? Or do I need to install to a different disk or partition? I'm asking if it's possible to dual-boot between them?

  • I have a VFP8 .exe file on one of the computers on a network per to per say we call it the server. Now when I try and run the .exe file from another workstation I get the message "The publisher could not be verified are you sure you want to run this software" "The file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher" If I say yes it does let me run the program. I thought there may be a way to eliminate that message as I do not like it to popping up each time I access the program from a workstation. The .exe program runs fine from the station that it is installed on. TonySper

For some unknown reason the auto fill facility which saves your user names and passwords when logging into sites is now not available.   • i have an XP computer with SP3. The pc will not recognize or talk to the qwest dsl modem, from actiontec. The modem is new and qwest says it works when I talk to them. The pc says that the NIC card is working fine. The card is new and has the newest driver. The cable connecting the modem to pc is new also. When I type in the network access number it will not connect to modem. What could possibly be the problem? I even connected with USB connection to no avail.

• XP Home will not boot up
  • I'm running an older AMD 2400 with XP Home SP2. For some reason the computer suddenly will not boot up. It was working fine yesterday, and I think it may have automaticly done a Windows update last night. Not sure about the update, but it would make sense because my daughters computer updated last night. Anyway, as it's coming up, it gets to the page that tells you to start in safe mode, normal mode, last known good configuration, etc. No matter which I choose, it reboots back to this page in a continous loop. I tried to run recovery through the XP CD, but when I run chkdsk, it tells me the drive appears fine but if I still want to check it, then use "/p". What does this mean ? When I put it in, it tells me it isn't a valid command. How would I write this so the computer knows what I mean ? Now assuming, this doesn't get me where I need to be, how do I fix this "loop mesage". Thanks, Tommy

  • Hello, my automatic updates keeps saying I need to download and install the Security Update XP kb977165. Problem is that I have clicked OK and it has download and also installed this update now 6 times on my laptop running XP sp3 and after each time it still says the same update needs downloading. • XP won't start... BSOD
  • I have a Dell Dimension 8250 with Windows XP installed. While browsing a streaming video site, I received an IE error message saying that Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and will shut down. After logging back in to IE, it happened again so I did a re-start. On restart, I received startup message: we apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not shut down properly and the normal full screen explanation. I just powered down as I have done before but got the message again followed by the bsod. The technical information I received was as follows: stop: 0x0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF75A03C0, 0XF7A3852C, 0XF7A38228) Atapi.sys - Address F75A03C0 base at F758A000, Datestamp 41107b4d Thinking it might be a virus from the internet site, I ran Avira Antivirus Rescue Software but it only came back with minor issues which didn't allow me to see the definitions. I then booted to my installation cd, went into repair and did a chkdsk. I also did bootcfg /scan which identified 1 Windows install and a bootcfg /list which indicated that Microsoft Windows XP WAS LOCATED AT c:\windows with load options /fastdetect /noexecute=optin. I have considered doing an in-place upgrade but I fear that it might cause me to lose valuable files I need for my business. I will also be disconnecting some of my hardware devices and try to reboot also. If anyone can suggest the proper troubleshooting procedures to help me determine my problem, it would be greatly appreciated.
• Icons on taskbar stop working
  • A co-worker of mine has XP SP3 and is having an issue with the taskbar's icons. They all work fine until you right-click on one. Doing so brings up the right-click menu correctly, including additional options for things like sending to files to WinRAR. These options are the same for icons on the desktop. However, even if you didn't actually select one of these options and just canceled it by clicking elsewhere, the very next time you right-click on a taskbar icon, you get a generic right-click menu (similar to right-clicking on an empty area of the taskbar). More importantly, normal left clicking on any taskbar icon then does nothing. Neither does clicking on any program "bars" that are open to the right of the icons. We have done all the basics such as scanning for viruses, making sure windows and display drivers are up-to-date. But this problem is even occurring in Safe Mode. Any ideas where to turn next?   • I have noted all the references to the MS support for this problem at startup. I am trying to help a friend who unfortunately does not have (and cannot get) the Windows XP disk (as was pre-installed, and purchased 3 years ago in another country). He crsahed his pc by panicking & "pulling the electricity plug" during a Windows update! I have an "Operating System Reinstallation cd" for my pc. Can I (in terms of both practically, securely & legally) use my disk to help restart his pc? If not, is there an "easy fix" for this problem that does not require any disks (e.g. via the F8 menus at startup)? Thanks for any advice - I want to avoid corrupting his pc or mine as a consequence!
• Dedicated hdd for page file, outer disc space used
  • Windows XP latest SP Hdd dedicated for page file installed, single partition. Page file of fixed size generated on this disc. While reviewing the partition with Windows on-board defragmentation utility, the page file is presented in outer partition sections. It doesn't start from partition beginning. I guess files critical for system performance should be placed at inner section - faster read/write access. Does windows on-board defrag utility really show the facts? Does this file is really placed in outer partition section? If yes, why does windows do that this way?

• Please help desktop/icons won't load
  • My computer will no longer boot up properly. I'm running windows xp It loads up but only the wallpaper no icons or task bar. I can't right click and it takes a while before ctrl, alt, and del wil work. I've tried doing new task > explorer.exe and it has worked a fe times but it's restricted. For example my second hard drive wouldn' load it freezes (only an egg time and then nothing) The browsers worke at first but the last few times again nothing. It seems to freeze a lo with the egg timer System restore I've tried about 5 times and it hasn't worked. I'm no sure if this is Malware, Trojan or my hard drive is dieing. I'm prett sure I have some virus's but I don't know if that's the problem. • Advice regarding a strange MS-DOS Batch File
  • Recently the HR Block tax program installed a pdf printer. It works fine and created pdfs of my returns. Here's my question. The install left a batch file in C/ Program Files. Its title is "temp995." I've never seen such a file in that folder before and wonder if it's just an "orphan." Could it be deleted--or perhaps "run"? • Running Windows XP on a MacBook
  • Hello, I will soon be getting my Refurbished MacBook which will be able to run Windows XP. I plan to buy the home version on ebay for a low cost. How much do you recommend I allocate to Windows XP? I was planning on giving XP 30GB's but not sure if that can be changed once allocated. I do not have much to run in Windows, however most apps work only on Windows, and some job websites or online applications will not work in a mac browser so it would be helpful to have Windows. (Although I have a job, I would like a higher paying job and it frustrates me going to company job applications that work only in Windows). For most of my day to day work I will be using Snow Leopard. Also another advantage of XP is the much superior BlackBerry desktop Manager. For the time being I will be booting into Windows and eventually may run them side by side, but this will require more RAM and I think Windows may not work as well in such an environment, although I do not know. Also can someone tell me if Windows hardware will work on my MacBook? I may want to get a USB to serial adaptor for some hardware and eventually dump my old 1999 Compaq Windows 98 laptop, but may keep it for the old hardware. I have a GPS and a Jornada 720 which I use to connect t the Compaq via Serial. Will it work in Windows XP on the Macbook? Also where will the XP files be stored? Can I use XP to access the Mac files and vice versa in the boot camp mode? May install Office 2003 on MacBook (as its much nicer than the Macs Office and Outlook beats Entourage for most uses. • Graphics Problem
  • I have a computer that just freezes up when booted normally. I've installed latest drivers. I turn the computer on. Windows XP loads About a minute or 2 it freezes up with like horizontal bars, all the pixels are shifted or the monitor just turns off. I think it works fine in 8 and 16 bit color. But when I set it to 32, it froze. The graphics card is: GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X Has SP3. Works just fine in safe mode.
• 3 copies of systray.exe
  • Can anyone explain why I have 3 copies of the above file in : c:\windows\temp 68KB c:\windows\system32 3KB c:\windows\system32\dllcache 3KB I was alerted to this when the one in the temp file was identified as trying to run on startup by my AV. I blocked it without any problems with the system tray. Thanks in advance.
• Launch folder windows in separate processe
  • The setting as in subject selected under Control Panel -> Folder Options More than one windows explorer open. Each of them opened in other folder. One of them opened for search function. However, if investigating with Task Manager all windows explorer windows lead to the same explorer process (task right click -> Go to process). The list "Processes" of task manager presents only one explorer window. So the setting as mentioned above not really functional. What's the reason?
• Dvd/Cdrw not recognized?
  • I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop.I am running windows xp professional.I was running a cd drive perfectly, when I took a cdrw/dvd from another Dell Inspiron 5000 and installed it in my laptop it does not recognize any hardware for new dvd drive anywhere. I have tried mr.fix it,3hrs and no result. I have tried the registry fix, did not work. I have looked for a driver, none found. Please tell me if it is possible to have a dvd cdrw while running xp professional? If so HOW! Please help!
• Install failed
  • I'm running XP Pro SP2 academic version. I've been having network issues for awhile and thought reinstalling the network might fix things. I loaded the install cd and when it came up elected install thinking I would have an option to load windows components but that is a thing of the past. Windows ran the complete install program. I tried to stop it by hitting the esc key but to no avail. I was forced to allow it to run to the end. And herein lies my problem. install froze on a light blue screen with an inoperable mouse. After many minutes I figured it was dead. I hit reset and got the screen with the boot choices: normal, last good and the safe choices. No matter what I select windows keeps returning to the same screen. I've been reading some posts with the same problem but nothing works. I've done bootcfg. I've been to /michaelstevenstech.com, did fixmbr (probably a mistake!) nothing makes a difference. The only thing that did anything helpful was how to turn off auto restart on errors by pressing F8. Here is the error message I get: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check for viruses on your computer. • reinstating genuine xp software
  • I had my Packard Bell computer stripped and re-formatted a while ago by a 'friend of a friend' after picking up some nasty virus(es). Once returned the computer worked fine for a while, but then started diplaying pop-ups saying the windows was not genuine. I can only assume the IT guy installed a rip off version of windows XP rather than the genuine one. The original Microsoft sticker with the product key is attached to the computer but I didn't get a disk when I bought the PC several years ago. Can I reinstall the genuine software by simply entering the product key somewhere?
