  • I often create procedure documents in Word that outline the steps to accomplish some task. For experienced people, just the step outline is plenty, and I can keep it fairly short. For people unfamiliar with the process, there is always a text paragraph for each step explaining and telling them what to do. Up to now I've always created (and maintained) two versions of each doument, one with text and one without. Is there a way to create this as one document (with a 2 or 3 level outline) with text, that I can turn off and have only the outline show? Here's a short example of what I mean: with explanatory text: HOW TO BAKE COOKIES 1. Prepare Dough (this is where you get the dough ready to start baking). A. Mix dry ingredients (it's important to mix flour, salt, and baking powder together first in a bowl) B. Mix wet ingredients (mix the eggs, shortening, milk and water together, and beat in a mixer) C. Combine ingredients (here you want to pour the dry into the wet, stirring constantly) 2. Cut out dough. (depending on the season, use the appropriate cookie cutters to make shapes) ==== or, without text for more experienced folks: HOW TO BAKE COOKIES 1. Prepare Dough A. Mix dry ingredients B. Mix wet ingredients C. Combine ingredients 2. Cut out dough. So, is there an easy way to do this?

  • I'm using Word 2007 on Window's Vista. How can I change the space between words? I am working on a template that will use various styles for difference sections. Is there a way to add some extra space between words when using the "Eurostile" font, size 14, condensed by 0.4. To my old eyes, the words are a little close together - any way to modify it? KJ
• Overriding paragraph font
  • I am editing in Word 2007, and sometimes need to override the paragraph font for certain math characters. The paragraph font is Times New Roman; the new font I want to introduce is Euclid Symbol. When I highlight the character and change the font, it does not stay but reverts to the paragraph font. When I delete the character, choose a font, and type the desired character, it will stay momentarily, but will frequently be replaced by a box when I scroll back up later. We use these fonts to match our styles in our layout program. This is why I am not using the usual Insert command.

  • When I opened by 2003 template for a letterhead in Word 2007, I found that the header where the letterhead was, is now blank. What happened? Can I fix this? Thanks!
• Opening a saved Merged document
  • I am using Mail Merge to save documents and after I have merged and saved the document, it still prompts for "opening this document will run the following SQL command" ... "Data from your database will be placed in the document. Do you want to continue?" It doesn't matter whether you click yes or no the document comes up and it is no longer connected to the database, which is what I want, however, the question is how do I save this document without the prompt for the SQL command being shown each time the document is opened?
• Unable to open/expand the file menu - Word 2003/SP3
  • When in Word I am unable to open/expand the file menu. It just highlights the word "File" but nothing happens when I click on it. All other menu's work just fine. I have ran a detect/repair but that did not work. Any help would be appreciated.
• Quotation Marks and automatic application thereof
  • I write quite a bit of dialogue, and the most irritating thing is having to insert quotation marks! I'm a pretty fair touch typist, but I always have to stop and look at quotation marks - they don'd come as automatically tome as other punctuations marks for some reason. I would really love some, more automatic, way of inseting them where required. For example, I'd like to keep on typing, ignoring the quotes then when I get to the end of a para, whatever, go back through it and highlight the bit that needs quotation marks beginning and end, and just click a toolbar button. Of course, you realise that there would have to be options for the closing quotes - and I put these within parenthesis to avoid confusion with normal punctuation, e.g. (."), (".) • Control Toolbox toolbar keeps coming back
  • I use Word 2000. I have a Toolbar.dot that starts up when Word starts. When I start Word, the Control Toolbox toolbar is not shown or checked. However, when I open a particular file, the Control Toolbox toolbar is shown, and although I uncheck it, it shows up next time I open the file in question.   • I'm setting up a table of contents using styles, and I'd like to customize it in a very specific way. Instead of having just the style text and page number, e.g.: Swine Flu test 4 I'd like to include an extra field at the beginning of each line: 46585 Swine Flu test 4 The first field isn't directly next to the second field--in fact, it's after it, several lines down. I'd also like to enclose each field with a border--not just each line, but each field within the line, i.e., like a table grid. We generate these docs each week, so I'm trying to find a way to automate the setup for the table of contents to speed it up. If it requires a lot of manual formatting it'll kind of defeat the purpose. Am I asking too much? Is there a way to do this? Thanks, Harry
• Comments from Word 2002 to 2007
  • We have a large number of templates written in Word 2002, most of which have comment balloons associated with them. We are in the process of converting these templates to Word 2007. Would it be fair of me to assume we could just copy the text of these comments to the new comments in our converted templates? Would there be any corruption? Or do we need to type out the comments letter by letter to avoid any corruption issues. There are differing opinions in our department on how to proceed. Hoping for some clarification from the helpful folks here. Thanks

• Formatting Problems
  • Words at the end of a line are not hyphenating or moving to the next line so that at the end of a line I continuously have a portion of a word on one line and the rest of it on the next without any rhyme or reason except that it's the end of the line and must wrap to the next. The paragraph is left aligned and I have tried opening a new document and it's still happening. So whatever the formatting problem is, it's on my Normal template now too.

  • You know how one links a word to a website, well I don't want to do that. You know how one inserts a document as an icon; I don't want to do that either. What I want to do is insert a document as a linked word so that the link will open the document on any computer because the file is physically within the file with which I am working.
• Autoformat for Lists
  • Hello, I'm increasingly annoyed with the autoformatting behaviour in Word 2007. The problem is, no matter what I do, Word applies indents of 0.63cm for all autoformatted lists. I've tried changing the styles, but you can't seem to access the indents for the default list styles. I can make the changes I need to multi-level lists and I can easily apply changes to lists created. The List Paragraph formatting now reads: "Indent: Left: 1 cm, Hanging: 0.5 cm, Right: 1 cm, Left, Bulleted + Level: 1 + Aligned at: 1 cm + Indent at: 1.63 cm, Based on: Normal". I can see exactly what needs to be changed, but I can't find a way to change it. The problem is, I'm not the only one using the template I'm trying to create and other people won't make these manual changes. So I need to know if this can be changed or not. Thanks, Geoff.

  • Hiya, We have printers with multiple trays which are configured for their specific paper type; tray 2 is headed, tray 4 is plain etc. These settings are configured in Word, so first page is Letterhead and other pages are Plain. This all seems to work OK using a PCL6 printer set as the default, but if a user's default printer is a PostScript one, Word changes the paper source to be auto select for page 1 and Color (!!!!) for other pages? Any ideas? Thanks

  • Hiya, We have a 3rd party app that as part of document generation (data is pulled from its SQL database), it uses a central template (.dot file) to add the company header. If we change the company header, new documents generated have the new information. However, if we change the central header and open a document which was originally created using the old header, the same changes in the central template are not visible. Is this by design, as what happens if we have 1000s of documents and we change our company name or email address. If an old document is opened and emailed off it will have the wrong info! I can't imagine MS to have been this stupid! Thanks
• List Autoformatting
  • Hi, When Word automatically creates a list, it indents the bullet at 0.25" and the text at 0.5". I want to change these settings for a template, to be distributed to other users. I can't find any way of changing this setting. So far, I've changed the style of the paragraph that is applied, but this change is ignored. I've changed the list styles, once again, this is completely ignored. Any help - or at least confirmation that this is hard coded and can't be changed - would be much appreciated. Thanks, Geoff.

  • I have a mergefield that can either be a whole number (i.e. 7), a number with a decimal (i.e. 2.14), or a text field (i.e. 13,14,15 & 17). • Printer Options
  • I send envelopes to one printer and letters to another. Everytime I open one of these documents I have to reset the printer choice to the correct printer.   • When I embed an Excel 2007 worksheet into a Word 2007 document and save and close the Word document, when I reopen the document and double-click the embedded Excel worksheet, I get the following error: "The program used to create this object is Excel. That program is not installed on your computer. To edit this object, you must install a program that can open the object." If I embed an Excel 2003 worksheet instead of an Excel 2007 worksheet and then save my Word document in Word 2003 format, I do not have this problem.   • I recently had to replace my computer and printer. My new computer has Windows 7 which I am slowly getting used to. I installed my old Office 2003 program on the compuer. At some time in the past I was able to change my printer settings to allow pdf conversion and printing of Word documents. Unfortunately I do not remember how I did this or where I got the instructions. I need to do the same on my new system. As far as I can tell Windows 7 didn't come with Adobe Acrobat and I think I have to have it in order to convert to pdf. Is it still a free download?
