• Enable / disable hardware at startup
  • I've got a wireless network adaptor that blue screens Windows XP SP3 if it is enabled at startup. If I start up in Safe Mode, disable the device, then restart normally, then re-enble the device it works fine. Is there any way to start the device off disabled, maybe run a batch file to enable it after a minute or so once Windows is fully booted and stable, then disable it again just as I shut down the computer? I know you can write a batch file to start/stop services, so maybe there is something like this as well? Many thanks, Alain
• Getting Compaq to Boot With 4 Gig Memory
  • We have a Compaq W8000 workstation with 4 GB of memory installed. Unfortunately Windows can only retrieve and use about 3.61 GB of that. It looks like the BIOS of various cards might be locking up part of the first 640 KB of memory? Can anyone give some advice on how to get Windows to get use of the full 4GB of memory? -- W
• Sound Blaster 2 ZS dead after reboot
  • Did a clean install on a Gateway 3200XL, loaded all the updates and drivers. Sound card works normally until I reboot, then no sound but the card is still in device manager and displayed as working properly. I made sure the motherboard sound chip was disabled in the bios, moved the Audigy sound card to a different slot, made sure I had the latest driver, made sure mute is not checked, that SoundBlaster is the default and that I had the "use only default device" box checked in the audio tab and still no sound after a reboot. If I uninstall the driver and then reinstall I get sound as long as I don't reboot. During the reboot the sound chimes until I log in then the sound is gone. I've also made sure I have all the drivers loaded for the motherboard. I'm not sure what to try next, any help??

  • Hello group, I am running out of space on my hard drive and want to migrate to a larger one. Can I "copy" my current hard drive onto a larger one? Is it necessary to purchase software to do so. PC running SP with all the SP packages. Also would hate to have to reinstall the many programs involved. Thanks.
• WebCam problems
  • Hello I run XP PRO + SP3. Over the years I bought three webcams but each time I move to a faster Window operating system, my cams become obsolete as I can't get an update of the drivers to the cam program.That's when I go buy the new one. The last one I bought is an expensive INTEL with many bells and whistles + a large sophisticated program ro run it but this Cam too is going to the bin for the same reasons, not to mention the obsolete INTEL program left on my HDD. I want to download one of the free available Camera programs and use it with any of the cams I already have. All 3 Cams have USB plugs, but when plugging them into a USB port somewhow windows recognize only one of them, the INTEL one, and it shows it on the MY COMPUTER page, and I can open it and look into my own face. On plugging the others cameras window tells me it found a USB new hardware but doesn't register it on the MY COMPUTER. Apparently the Camera itself must have something in it, like those little memory sticks (Firefly) that makes windows recognize them quickly and open them but I really don't know much about this topic. If any one know something on this topic I'll be gratefull for your help and advice. Many thanks Drora

• so one USB port not equal to other USB port
  • I have been having trouble with one of my USB hard disks. It worked for some time, but not reliably. In practice it randomly dismounted while copying files (and also when not copying). After that I had to pull the power plug and reinsert it to make the drive mount again. Yesterday this happened again, I got annoyed and, since the drive is still under a few monthes warranty, I decided to call Medion support. This guy advised to try it on another USB port. Initially I was sceptical but nevertheles I gave it a try. Guess what? The troublesome drive now seems to work like a charm! Problem solved. But... how is this??? USB ports aren't equal?   • Has anyione come across any new systems (either from DELL or HP) that already has new USB 3.0 ports? Apparently, it is 10 times faster than USB 2.0 so it worth an upgrade!

  • On a HP Windows XP SP3 PC with all Updates i do receive the following two Errors on every Startup: Event ID 45 ftdisk The system could not successfully load the crash dump driver. Event ID 49 ftdisk Configuring the Page file for crash dump failed. Make sure there is a page file on the boot partition and that is large enough to contain all physical memory. I can disable the virtual memory, then the errors dissapears, but when enabled again, the errors are back. What can cause this Errors? Thanks a lot. • Monitor problem. Blinking power light no display
  • I have a Hyundai L90D+ monitor that served me well for the last couple of years till yesterday. It worked as the extended monitor in Dual View recently and all was fine. Suddenly after starting the computer yesterday there was no image on the monitor and the power LED which normally is blue when the monitor is on now keeps blinking orange or goes off completely for a second or so. Most of the time it stays blue though. I have to press the power button a couple of times now to turn it off. Any ideas? yaro

Athlon 64 x2 6000 Windsor cpu + Arctic Cooler heatpipe job 2x1gb Crucial Ballistix 3xSataII hd's (connected to mobo Sata ports), 1xIDE LG dvd-rewriter connected to motherboard IDE port, 1xPCIe x1 SIL3132 Sata card with a dvd-rom drive connected to it. Camera card reader connected to internal USB pin header, ...in Antec Solo case + Antec modular psu with no dust bunnies in there, no temp. problems btw ! running lovely for over a year, probably 2 years, ..or more, During the past couple of weeks in Windows Normal mode, PC stops responding, and ignores me, and I have to reboot. Last night, swapped out memory for 2x512mb Crucial ddr2 667 modules, and this morning changed set swap file size to min. 1536 and max. 2048, and offline defragged with PerfectDisk 10, rebooted to Windows Normal mode and started a PerfectDisk defrag, and after a few minutes - PC sailed off into outer space again ! Booted up with bootable Spinrite 6 cd and started a full hd scan (Spinrite 6 mode "4"), and after it had scanned a few sectors - PC sailed off into outer space again ! ...am I looking at a new motherboard ? regards, Richard

  • Hi, Running Windows XP Home, SP3. I understand that NTFS is more efficient than FAT32 (faster, some nice features). My home computer is only a 60GB disk, with two partitions. I don't remember the reason for this, but the primary partition (where the OS is installed) is FAT32 and the secondary partition is NTFS. Is there any way to convert the primary partition to NTFS without losing data? Note that the OS is installed on C: If I wanted to go for a more modern HDD with, say, 320Gb, whats the basic procedure for getting everything transferred? Will I have to re-install all applications, redo all settings, etc or can I "ghost" my old computer onto the new disk? Will the new disk need to be partitioned in the same way as the old one?   • I have a 320GB external hard disk with 2 primary partitions and an extended partition. There is also 122BG of "unallocated" space (marked black in the disk management graphic display). Can I resize the extended partition without losing the data that resides on the logical drive that's already allocated in the extended partition? Running WINDOWS/XP Home with sp3 installed. TIA, Phil

  • hi, background: i have win xp sp3 cd, somewhat old computer which has intel P4 2.4Ghz CPU & asus MotherB all roms/hdd are connected with IDE cables, and the MB has 3 sdram slots (yeah rare!) (the first 512MB (newley added before the problem)/sec 265MB/third 128MB=896MB) harddisk western digital old 40gb, have 1 dvd-rom 1cd-rom + vga 4x geforce 5200 (new edition with dvi port), no floppy. * NOTE: the computer connected to the tv and is not really usable - maybe twice a once in 2 weeks. problem: i had windows seven (installed it to try) got low performance due to 512 MB of ram so i extendet it to 896MB and seven ran freely the first time i added the memory. tried to start the computer after 2/3 days and for my suprise a black blank 37" screen appears (no seven's logo) restarted (maybe temp. problem) and the reperation screen appeared skipped that tried one more normal start = guess what same prob. tried repair startup or whatever that is! after some time of "searching for prob." nothing seems to be a problem, seven suggested to restore the system, i agreed with that = guess what?! didn't help (else why i'm writing). got stuck with no tv comp! tried clean install of xp sp3. first screens where DOS world lives in finished with zero problems. restarted the comp and the logo of old xp showed up (still in setup procces) the blue lovely screen & delayed time counter with the green bar appeared maybe it installed something maybe not but either ways the comp suddenly restarted, once again the setup began but this time the green bar and the promising text never appeared except an error something with application prob. didn't have the time needed to be the doctor. tried: 1) not hdd prob: switched 3 hdd and installed xp using another comp on the 40gb hdd and worked out, when replaced the hdd in the problematic comp = guess what? same as seven black death screen (actually he never had the chance to live) 2) sdram is ok: since added recently i removed all the card and installed only one after the other on diffrent slots never worked. downloaded MemTester for DOS and ran it with 896MB all the night and passed 16 times with no errs. 3)no interferance with other components: removed PCI cards, roms, usbes nothing helped (*NOTE didin't remove vga since no onBoard videocard) 4) don't think its PSU problem cause its 350 watts and never had problems before 5) no bios setup: tried optimal setting and after that failsafe setting and did not help. 6) never checked and never knew it could be a cpu problem - don't have another cpu to try. 7) no heat problem possible since the cpu's heat is no more than 32C, MB no more than 30C 8) never (and don't think this could be) checked if MB could be a prob since don't have another to replace. ending: i could use the your help guys, any help is appreciated!
• 1.5 Terabyte SATA drive super slow
  • I just bought a new 1.5 Terabyte drive for my machine and the performance just crashed. It is a "Western Digital Caviar Green" ( Manufacturer part# "WD15EARS" ) Accourding to specs. it's a 7200 rpm SATA with 64 k cache. Just wondering if any other people have noticed issues with this or similar drives. Or are large drives just slow? I was used to using a 130 GB 15k RPM SAS drive before. Is the performance difference so drastic between SAS and SATA? Or large versus small drives. Or 7200 rpm versus 15k RPM. Another mistake I might have done is that I just made one huge partition. Could that be my performance killer? -- Rahul
• Sound Driver Problem (code19). Please Help!
  • Ok Firstly I don't know if I'm posting in the correct section! Kinda new here :/<br /> <br /> My problem is that after I had various virus alerts (I guess the website was heavily infected) from my anti-virus (avast) my sound has stopped ( I did deal with the virus alerts by sending them to the chest). Both from speakers and headphones. I proceeded to look at the drives in the device manager and for all the drives under 'sound,video and game controllers' they all have a yellow exclamation mark in which all have a satus of : <strong>Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19).</strong> <br /> Have no idea what is going on! Have tried to uninstall and then scan for hardware changes.. all it does is go back to being like it was before. Then I tried to run windows safe mode and rolling back to a previous successful regist config. Didn't help either, so I'm kinda stuck on what to do next! <br /> <br /> Will appreciate any advice given!   • Folks: Recently I bought a new Acer B203W flat screen monitor. It came with the usual CD containing drivers, etc. With my Windows 2000 platform, I can set the screen pixel level to (1280 x 1024). No need to install any drivers for the monitor. However, with Windows XP, if I try to use the (1280 x 1024) pixel level, the screen goes blank for a while then it switches back to the (1024 x 768) setting.. * Why is this the case ? * Should I install drivers that came with the monitor on the XP platform ? * How to do this installation ? • can't combine partitions using BootIt NG
  • Hi all, I have a single hard disk of capacity about 150 GB. I am on Windows XP. I have partitions as C: (64.46 GB), D: (29.29 GB), E: (23.43 GB), J: (5.86 GB) and I: (26.01 GB). I want to combine the last two partitions I: and J: into a single entity. Both these are empty (i.e. have no data, and I am ready to format these if need be, in fact I have just formatted them using Disk Management feature of WinXP). I am trying to use BootItNG to combine these two. I have used basic features of BootItNG before also many times for such work as sliding the partition, resizing etc (but still I can't say I am an expert in this type of work and haven't used advanced features of BootitNG). However, this time I can't understand why BootItNG is not working the way I want, or where I am wrong. I am reproducing below a snapshot of the BootIT NG screen and also that of Disk Management to facilitate explaining the situation (I wish I could upload an attachment containg a picture of the screen, but I think attachments are not possible in this newsgroup). • Sound stopped working
  • I have a Dell Dimension 8200 desktop and the sound has stopped working. I have checked all the settings to make sure that the sound is not turned off or turned down. I checked in the BIOS to made sure the sound is not turned off there. I tried another set of speakers. I have reinstalled the drivers, even went to the venders website and downloaded the lastest drivers and installed them. The sound card is a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz and the device manager says that the sound card is working properly. I have checked and double checked all the settings but can get no sound.   • Hi, I am about to buy a desktop PC. Is it possible to place PC away from the desk, like putting it in the closet and somehow connecting either wirelessly or with a single long wire to the monitor, keyboard and others. Maybe there is a device for this type of connecting. 1. I do not want a Laptop, too expensive, hard to fix. 2. All in one PCs are expensive and very limited choice. Thanks.

  • Hello all, iv had a problem recently which i find pretty fustrating. Im a keen online games player, i use a site called fly or die. To pla there games you have to have java on your system, for a year or so i worked with no problems. But for the last 2 or 3 months its stope working on my pc only. Its works on my mum and dads laptops so its not a problem with the site i tryed uninstalling and reinstalling, iv tryed contacting the site an changing my browser, iv even tryed resetting my old browsers settings. i run virus scans every day and the same two trojion viruses show up however, my avg is able to remove them. But they keep coming back everyday. Additional, once in a while, like every 4 or so weeks, java start working again but only for like a day, then everything goes totall kaputski again. With this there is one other abnormal goings on, when i start my pc u and log in my fan goes into over drive until i log out, like its unde emence load. Even when its not... when its like this java doesnt work But when java does work, my pc's fan is silent and every thing i relaxed even when i have loads of programmes running Id appricaite any help you guys may have to offer =-} the only tw things that me and friends have been able to pin it down to is software conflict or hardware problem. • BIOS / CMOS not working properly
  • I have a Gigabyte S-Series GA-G31M-ES2L Motherboard. When I go into CMOS settings <DEL> the <Load Fail-Safe Defaults>, <Load Optimized Defaults> and <Set Supervisor/User Password> are greyed. I'm not aware of anything I have done to change this. Can anyone help please? Thanks. Bill R

• How to clone failed hard drive to replacement hard drive
  • Looks like my current hard drive has failed as when I try to boot, the load page does not show the hard drive or the dvd/cd drive and hangs on that page. I had previous problems in trying to boot Windows and the only way to get past that problem was to boot from the installation disc and do a repair install. That got the computer booting OK. I did a scan of the hard drive and there were a few errors that could not be fixed and subsequently have got to the stage that looks like there is a hard drive failure. This hard drive does still sound OK, no noises coming from it. Is is possible to install a new hard drive as the master and the old drive as the slave and use a program like HDClone or PC Inspector Clone Maxx to clone the contents of the old drive to the new drive. This would save alot of time as it take a while install all the programs onto a new drive. If there is then errors with Windows, I should be able to repair it. Further, the old drive is partitioned, is there a problem with that. -- smokey

• XP wireless utility
  • Hi. Friend of mine's network adapter would not work so she bought a wireless USB. Installed it, and said she got the internet for a few minutes then nothing. She can't connect. I had a look and the Utility for the USB is fine and has all the correct settings, a good signal but no internet. The weird thing is the Network adaptor does not show in Connections or the notification task bar, only the LAN wired one. I tried to use the wireless setup wizard in the control panel but that stopped when you're meant to choose the drive that the USB is showing, says error and that's it. I use Vista so am a bit rusty with XP but shouldn't the wireless adaptor show in Connect to ? Coz I could then configure it. The other worry of course is that when I type in the Router's isp in the internet browser it's not finding it. There's a laptop in the house which is connected wirelessly to the router and it can open the router's utility from the IE browser. Any ideas please. Ta Jen

  • I tried the new Vostro 1502 laptop and noticed that display cover is closed rather hardly, and when display is near 2-inches from the body, it tense and springy and tries to slam very sharply, with sharp knock. So you need be very careful and to keep the fingers between display and housing, otherwise display will knock very sharply. When I closed it first time, i was not very accurate and display slammed very sharply, with sharp knock. Can this damage LCD display?
• cursor moving to top of screen all the time
  • Hi, I have a Toshiba Sat Pro M10 laptop with a cursor problem. Every few minutes the cursor moves to the top of the screen and sometimes the bottom of the screen. It stays there and I can move it back up/down but it fights against me and goes back to the original top or bottom position. I am able to move it left or right only. Then after a couple of minutes it then seems to free it's self and all is well again. I have plugged a USB mouse into the machine but this makes no difference. I have also reformatted and reinstalled the OS (XP Pro) but again exactly the same issue a few minutes later. I am 100% sure that it isn't a virus or malware but would like to know if it can be cured as the laptop works great except for this frustrating problem. Cheers Lenny

I usually use either a DELL or eMachine Corp Enterprise XP Home CD, install and reboot then register with MS online / Validate / Call Telephone / Change the 25 keys and UPDATE. Reboot and the Validate with the legal 25 key sticker on the Laptop case. But this Toshiba is not working. What should I do ? The legal sticker is on the case. Does Toshiba Tech Requires Toshiba Software installation for registering with MS / Validating the 25 digit key install sticker on the laptop case? I have a TOSHIBA A105 S2194 laptop with no recovery disks. Thanks.

  • ...am sOOooo rusty. Aunty's PC has a Skt. AM2 Asrock AliveNF6P-VSTA motherboard in it with single core 3800+ 2.4ghz cpu, and 2 x 512mb's PC2-5300 ((166 actual?) / 333 mhz) ..and I just nabbed her a AMD Athon 64 x2 CPU 5600+ (ADA5600IAA6CZ) (2800mhz) AM2, on ebay. I gather that to have the thing operating at its' best, we would fit PC2-6400 memory modules - whch would run at 200mhz on the board, before double-data rate and fsb/cpu core internal quad-pumping etc. confusing considerations ! And I gather that if I fit the dual core chip which supports 1066*/800/667/533 fsb frequencies, the board fsb actual freq. will be 166 mhz using PC2-5300 modules. So would it pay to buy new PC2-6400 (200mhz) memory modules, or will it be satisfactory, performance wise, to leave the PC2-5300 in there, and avoid the cost of replacing it ? TIA regards, Richard
• printer shows as "offline"
  • The problem is that I cannot use the printer because it shows as "offline". If I right-click the printer, an option shows as "use printer offline", and if I select the option the printer shows as "offline - offline". This changes the right-click option to "use printer online", but returns me to the original problem. This high quality HP printer is connected to my XP/SP3 computer via both being hard-wired to a Linksys/DD-WRT router. A temporary remedy is to delete the printer and port used, totally un-install the HP software, and re-install. I've done this several times, but it will always return to this offline state. Once, I used the method for being able to print a HQ photograph, but it was offline again within the hour. Another clue as to where the problem is not is the fact that my wife's Vista computer (station next to me) is connected the exact same way and works fine. This problem has become extremely frustrating (ie, I'm thinking Macintosh) ... any help would be extremely appreciated! TIA, and cheerios from the Avalon Peninsula Newfoundland :)

  • Hello, My master hard disk has failed and I have successfully replaced it with a new one and reinstalled windows XP etc. Before the crash I had a second slave drive with some data I would like to keep on it. When I connect this drive, it shows up in disk management, but does not get assigned a drive letter. How can I get windows to assign a drive letter to the drive without formatting it and losing all of my data? Both drives are IDE drives, the master is jumpered to cable select and is on the master cable, the slave seems to have lost its jumper, or never had one, but shows up in the bios as the secondary hard drive. • chkdsk - what the heck
  • I wanted to check an external USB harddisk. Via Windows Explorer - Properties - Extra, I get the message that it can't be done because exclusive access is needed. OK, I try another way: In Windows: 'Start' - 'Run" I enter: chkdsk I: /f /r OK, this seems to work... It looks like it is going to take a looong time, but at least I can monitor what's happening in a DOS box. When I came back after about 10 minutes the screemsaver was active, so I woke it up with a mouse move. Now the DOS box has disappeared altogether, not on the task bar or anything. I can see the drive is still running, but from now on I have no idea what's going on (if anything) and how long I have to wait! Why is it so hard to accomplish a simple operation?? • usb probs with XP
  • Hi all, I have a new HP dc7900eC running XP Pro, all current service packs. When I plug ANY USB memory stick into ANY USB port, it doesn't recognise it, and when I click on My Computer, the system freezes. The second I remove it, I get a flash view of the devices, including the memory stick, then the system returns to normal. I have removed the hard disk and fitted it to another PC of the same model which works well. The problem returns, so the problem is in Windows, not the hardware. I have performed a BIOS upgrade, and all Windows Service Packs. Can anyone please suggest a solution? Many thanks, Graeme Scott
