• Lost my lease!
  • Is there something an ordinary person can glean from the following Event Viewer error messages? "Your computer has lost the lease to its IP address 192.168.100.2 on the Network Card with network address 0006253F71E1." I don't remember signing a lease! Scanning recent Event View entries I see quite a few DHCP errors. There's also this one: "The IP address lease 76.127.54.187 for the Network Card with network address 0006253F71E1 has been denied by the DHCP server 0.0.0.0 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message)." • Intruder? Extruder?
  • 2 or 3 times in several days my firewall has said SupportSoft Agent Service wants into my trusted zone (LAN stuff - none of which is even being used on my system). Having no clue what SupportSoft Agent Service is I Google it. Everybody's talking about it but nobody is defining it. (Eventually I discover that Comcast installed it.) Several sites say it is or is related to related to an SNMP based agent - which I'm sure everyone here has for breakfast, but ... Again everybody's talking about it but nobody is defining it. A found that this thing is in the Comcast "Desktop Doctor" folder and even a Comcast CHAT technician said I'd be better off deleting Desktop Doctor. Frankly in the few days I've had Comcast (my only choice) broadband, I've come to trust them as far as I can throw a Mexican bull by the tail. Is it possible to tell in simple English what this thing is really doing on my computer and why it wants access to my trusted zone. And/or why I shouldn't permanently disable it. -- JimL

  • I've had Comcast cable broadband for about a week and my LinkSys is connected through USB. Every couple days my connection drops out once or several times. I know when it happens because of the audible USB disconnect sounds. I know that it happens because I try clicking up Google and get a disconnect page on the browser instead. How can I tell if this loss of connection is Comcast based or USB based? Or, for that matter, LinkSys based? Incidentally, the LinkSys will do ethernet, but I don't have a short ethernet cable yet. Also incidental is that twice when I got such dropouts I was actually on Comcast CHAT - and, of course, lost them. Thanks -- JimL

  • after re-loading windows xp onto my pc (with asus mobo) my internet access has disappeared - yellow question mark indicating no ethernet controller present. this was done to fix windows logon looping into logoff after replacement of my agp card. any suggestions/help out there?
• Unable to connect in local network
  • In my nursing home I have 3 computers. One in my room, lets call it "PC A". Second one belongs to my manager. Lets call it "PC B". Third one is in the medical store. Lers call it "PC C". All run windows xp professional. PC B had some windows error and was unable to boot into. So I had to reformat the HDD and reinstalled windows XP professional. I created 3 user accounts on PC B. One is my account which is an administrative account, the other two belong to my manager and the radiologist doctor and they are limited accounts. I have a local LAN there but I have never ever given internet access to these PCs for security reasons. PCs C & A have already been connected and I can access PC C from my PC PC A. Now remember PC B was formatted and windows XP was reloaded. I made the "desktop folder" and the "my documents folder " shared in PC B for all three accounts. This is the setup. Now my problem is that I can access my desktop and my documents folder on PC B through PC A, but I am unable to access the desktop and documents folders of my manager and the radiologist doctor's documents & desktop through PC A. Everytime I try to do that it says, "you do not have the necessary priviledges to access. Pl contact the systen adminstrator." I don't understand. I am the adminstrator in all the three pCs. I can access my account in PC B, then why can't i access the other two accounts on PC B ? I tried removing the log in password on the other two limited accounts on PC B, but again the same message. I tried creating a new "trial acocunt" on PC B , but again the the same problem. I am really stumped. Can somebody pl help me without asking me to reformat the HDD AND RELOADING WINDOWS ? PC A has win XP SP 2, PC C has Win XP SP2, but I loaded Win XP SP 3 on PC B as I loaded windows again on PC B. Is that the problem ?
• Cannot access My Documents on XP machine in a domain
  • I am working with a machine running XP Pro in a Server 2003 domain. A previous technician changed the computer name and switched it to a workgroup. Now the computer shows up in the network twice. I tried to change the computer name back to its original but got error message " an account for this computer already exists". Did a System Restore and got original desktop back but when I tried to access My Documents got error msg " the file \\server1\users\accounting which contains My Documents is unavailable, you may not have permission chk with system admin" . I can ping the server by IP addr and server name and can ping the machine from the server in the same manner. How can I solve this issue? Also the Outlook on this machine does not function. Office 2003 was upgraded to 2007 prior to the restore, so re installing 07 may fix this issue. The unit can connect to the internet and is mapped to the network printer. -- Hornet85
• Private folder
  • While setting up my network, I answered yes to making my user folder private. I cannot find a way to undo this and now cannot access my folders from my laptop. Anyone know how I can undo this? -- NJP
• changing the MAC
  • I hope I posted to the correct NGs I lived in an apartment block where Internet access is provided via LAN. Of late, I cannot access the Internet and was told to try and change my MAC for my adapter and it works. The management of the block suspects that one tenant is blocking access to the Internet using MAC filters but unable to find out who; Questions that I have are; 1. I thought only the management could block access using MAC filters on the routers ? 2. Any applications that can detect who is blocking of MAC address ? -- Dual Boot WinXP Pro SP3 with Windows 7
• URL showing as the title instead of the actual page Title
  • I have this computer that seems to have Internet Explorer running a little different than others. When I open a web page, I can see the title in the top of the IE window, for example, this page says "Start a new question or discussion - Windows Internet Explorer". I can see in the taskbar, the IE Icon and "Start a new Question..." The other computer shows IE with the URL, "http://social.answers.microsoft.com/forums/eb-US/newthread?forum=InternetExplorer" and when I minimize it, it shows "http://social.answ..." . I tried to search everywhere and cannot find a solution to make it show the title instead of the URL. I was using IE7, uninstalled it, it has the same behavior in IE6.
• Workplace folders in both computers are empty.
  • Running two XP Pro Sp3 computers in peer-to-peer LAN. Network was working ok until a few days ago. Now "Computer 2" (C2) can no longer access shared drives or folders of "Computer 1" (C1). Error message "Network path could not be found." Have run network setup wizard several times to no avail. Workplace folders in both computers are empty. Have searched for C2 from C1 and C2 was found. Shared Drive C: of C2 is listed under My Network Places of C1 and all of its folders are accessible from C1. Searching for C1 from C2 will find C1.Opening C1 folder on C2 will show Shared Drive C: of C1 as well as some shared folders. Trying to access drive C: or any of the folders still results in "Network path could not be found." Here are my settings: Simple file sharing is turned off. Share persmissions are set to Full Control for "Everyone" on both computers. NetBIOS over TCP/IP is turned on Computer Browser service is (re)started HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\restrictanonymous is set to 0 NWLink IPXSPXNetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol" is added to the "NetworkProperties" list The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service is set to Automatic C1 and C2 have different names but are part of the same workgroup. Temporarily disabling fire wall does not help. Don't know what else to check and/or change. Hope somebody can help. Am totally frustrated!!!
• Linksys and Smartphone
  • Hi all, I have purchased a htc touch pro which is working fine. However the G3 connection is poor, due to dutch provider KPN, and most of the time it switches to GPRS. To improve the internet connection to the mobile phone I use a usb cable from phone to PC. Again that works fine. Then I purchased a Cisco Linksys Wireless-N broadband Router and connected it between my DSL modem and the router like it says in the book. The phone now can 'see' the router and on the phone I connect to the router with name and password. The connection stays ON for a couple of seconds and then disconnects. Whatever protocol I select, no proper result. Does anyone knows what I do wrong or oversee. Regards,

  • Apologies because I imagine this has been asked many times! I have read the web and I do understand the concept of security etc but I'm still no nearer to enswering the question "can I share my personal "My documents folder?" I want to share... c:\documents and settings\pds\my documents ...between two Windows XP Pro machies in a home network where I log onto both machines using the user "pds". Can I do this and if so how? Everythig I've tried hides these <expletive deleted> folders. Thanks, Paul DS.
• Networking a printer
  • Howdy. I need some basic help for dummies here. I have a desktop. It has 2 printers. A parallel port Epson and a USB Canon Pixma IP4000. Each printer has sharing enabled (Printer 1 and Printer 2) I have 2 laptops. I have no problem printing to the Epson. I now want to add the Canon. How do I do this? Also, I no longer have the CD that came with the Canon. But I'm sure the driver is somewhere on my desktop. I can't find it. I searched C drive (using *.drv) but nothing looks correct. There must be a menu that shows the name/location of the driver? I am not sure how to proceed. Mel
• Access oddity - right newsgroup?
  • I just got a cable ISP (Comcast) a few days ago, and find some weirdities going on. After solving some of them I have a real puzzler. I can be going along just fine, surfing the internet, reading a newsgroup, checking email - when out of nowhere my dial-up will dial up! Not having all the bugs out nor the email all set, I haven't stopped dial-up yet. But I'd really like to find out what keeps dialing the land line. I seem to be able to run on both at once - sort of. I found my anti-virus program was updating awful slowly. I looked at the sys tray and had a phone connection running?! Same with something on my browser. It got slow and I found the dial-up connected. I don't even know where to look or for what. Altho I seem to recall some place seeing a Never Dial setting. Haven't found where. • Broadcom cards continually re-negotiating, showing short?
  • I have a network with 13 HP DC5750 desktops. Almost all of them are exhibiting a strange behaviour. They drop the network connection for a few seconds, and then reconnect. In the event log, I see this event repeatedly: 'Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet: Network controller configured for 100Mb full-duplex link' On some machines, it does not happen too often, once every week or so. But on some, it is happening once an hour, and even once every few minutes sometimes. Also, when I run the Broadcom Diags, and run cable test, it shows that 2 of the 4 pairs have a short. At first, I thought, AHA!, that's the problem. But now it seems suspicious, because all my computers are showing 2 shorted pairs. While it is possible, I doubt that they are all shorted. Has anyone else seen this happen? I'm going to try new cables to make sure, but beyond that, this seems pretty weird to me. Maybe it's the cheapo Linksys switch they are plugged into? Or maybe there are Gremlins chewing on my cables at night? Many of the events are registering after midnight.... :)

• facebook and Windows Live Writer and Blog slow typing into blog
  • I used Windows Blog today and the typing into a blog online is very slow to appear in the webpage. I may have to wait up to 20 seconds after typing before the webpage lets me type again. The whole webpage freezes. The same happens when I type into Facebook and this never happens doing any other task on this computer. What could be causing this? At one point I changed something that showed port 445 but I can not find that now. Windows Live Email and other Windows Live applications. This does not seem to be happening here at Microsoft Groups and I think it did not used to happen before when I used Windows Live Writer and blog...but I may have forgotten. Someone has already suggested using Firefox but love love love Windows Live applications and the great services available online. A beneficiary as myself likes the applications much. -- ...scribble scribble scribble...
• XP firewall Domain Profile leaves 2nd wireless nic wide open?
  • Hello, I am researching on using winxp firewall. My question is that when a user is connected to the domain and the xp fireall domain profile is in use. (Our case the firewal domain profile disables the firewall) Will it also disable the firewall on all other nics on a laptop?? For example we have laptop users that leave their wireless nic on when docking back in the office and then join the domain through the wired nic on the doc. They can easily connect to other wireless networks since we are in a big city while the firewall domain profile is enabled. Does that mean that the wireless nic has no firewall enabled also? Or is XP firewall smart enough to know that the wireless nic cant find the domain controller for our network and the firewall stays on for that wireless nic while the other wired nic that did find the domain controller fw gets disabled? If not anyone know something that would adress this.

  • Hello! Friends: My OS is XP-Pro. My home network was working fine until a full malware scan was done on my pc. After which, other PCs in my home network can't share the files in my pc. They got this message: "not enough server storage to process this command." Can anyone help? Much appreciated. Lee
• Browsing on Some Computers on My Network
  • Two of the PCs on my home network lose their browsing connections after I log onto the Internet. Both are configured with Windows XP SP 3. Both detect on my network management software (Network Magic) as being connected and working perfectly; however, when I open any browser (IE, Firefox, Google Chrome), I initially connect to a Web page but then cannot continue browsing, as further links do not work. After the initial page, I lose the link. Consistently, I find that I can reboot the system and open the browser again, but the loss of network connectivity persists. In the case of one of the PCs, from the moment it was set up, it did not browse properly. In the case of the other, it has worked until recently - the past two weeks, and now behaves in the same manner as the other PC. In both cases, the DHCP appeared to be working correctly. Network Magic indicates that both computers are connected to my network and are functioning properly. I have also verified that my IP addresses for all the systems in my network are configured correctly. What do I need to do to get my connectivity to stay active once I reboot these PCs? I've looked in the archives, but none of the similar issues are similar enough to help me solve my problem. Anyone have suggestions that will lead me to a solution? Thank you, -- Michael D. • pinging a numeric address works but not an URL (alphameric)
  • After uninstalling ZoneAlarm (version 6.5), I could no longer access the web. Suspecting a problem with the TCP/IP connectoins, I have noticed the followings: - pinging an IP numeric address in the local network or in another network works fine (although I got 2 spurious characters between "Pinging" and the IP address when replying - Thus I got "Pinging yö 130.104.xxx.yyy" where yö are the spurious characters [not seen in another compouter]) - pinging an URL (alphameric address) does not work anymore (thus a "ping www.mysite.com" which would normally work gives "Ping request could not find host www.mysite.com... (the address is resolved from another computer)". I checked that the DNS server replies to ping and is, therefore accessible; other computers using the same DNS server work fine) - tracert (to a numeric or an alphameric address) does not work: only one hop and then "no resources" I ran "sfc /scannow" to replace any corrupted Widows file (it ran to completion; I was asked several times to insert the WinXP CD Rom and suppose, thereby, that some files were indeed replaced), but to no avail. Any suggestion (apart from reinstalling Windows entirely ...). Can this be corrected using the Microsoft repair console (and avoiding having to reinstall Windows entirely ...) ?
• I set up a network successfully then it disappears on XP. Magic?
  • Any answers? I have XP sp3 on all three computers. I have a 802.1 N router (linksys). I run ZoneAlarm Free Firewall. I ran the wireless network setup wizard. All computers can connect to the internet through the router. I ran the network setup wizard, shut down, restart and can see and share files and printers from and between all three computers. So my network is fully functional? No... Then I leave them for a short while and the shared folders disappear and I get this error message when I click on a listed shared folder from another computer: "\\PUPPY(one of the other computer's names)\My Documents is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network name cannot be found. Things I have tried: A. I checked that the network name is the same on all computers. (It must be coz it worked already but I still checked) B. I set the firewall to accept an IP range which covers all the computer's IPs in the trusted zone i.e. those IPs are accepted. C. I tried with no firewall on any computer at all. Still no joy. D. I tried to run network wizard again, restart on all computers and hey presto, the connections are all there again. Question: Where do the connections go? Why do they turn off? Are they timing out? Is it magic or voodoo? How do I nail this problem? Thanks to anyone who replies in advance. You people rock. And smile at someone new today. It works.
• XP network, PC not showing...
  • Thank you for wanting to read into these groups and providing any useful answers! My problem is the following: I run Windows XP Media Center edition SP2 on my PC and Windows XP Home edition SP3 on my netbook. When I connect both with a (Crossover) lan cable, I set up a network between them. My (ADSL, USB-modem) internet connection gets shared right away, so on my netbook I can go online too. (don't have wireless router yet). Now, I have two minor problems happening... First: When my netbook automatically goes in standby and I put it back on, there seems to be a problem with the LAN (and thus, the internet-)connection... connection beint limited or non-existent. Rebooting sometimes does help, but mostly it doesn't... Secondly: I don't seem to get a real connection between the both computers. There must be a network between them, since I can use the internet connection from the PC on my netbook (or am I wron on that one?) but in the "workgroup" my netbook only 'sees' itself (and not the PC) and the PC doesn't even see itself. there are several folders shared on the pc, and in the firewall settings I set sharing as an exeption... So far I transferred files between both computers with flash-drives and hard drives (and small files even through my email-account, since the internet connection is the one that does work...). It would be nice tough to be able to work on files located on the other machine (since I do a fair amount of photo-editing on my PC, but the files should stay on my netbook. So far I just transferred them from netbook to pc; then edited and then transferred them back. (photo-editing on a small screen is just impossible ;-) ) thanks again for any usefol commentaries or advice. I hope I provided enough necessary information. (oh, and yes, I did try to find an answer to my problem in these groups and elsewhere online before making this post...)
• XP / Vista networking
  • I have recently installed a fresh version of XP Pro on my PC. Since then I have problems with my network with a Vista Home Premium laptop. Previously I have had no problem with networking both machines which are connected by ethernet cable I can access the vista files and transfer to and from the PC but if I try to access the PC from the laptop I get the error message; Windows cannot access \\PC1 â??Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnoseâ?? Clicking diagnose brings up the message: â??Windows did not find any problems with this computers network connection.â?? I can access the internet from the laptop using the PCâ??s connection, and the PC appears on the network map and in windows explorer on the laptop. I have tried removing the Firewall and antivirus on both machines, and various registry alterations as suggest for this error on numerous other forum without success. Fortunately I can manage with just the connection from the PC but it would be nice to have things working both ways. Does anyone have a solution that works?

  • Been using this printer for couple years now. Somehow we got an "Intuit Printer" on our computer and everything was going to it and our printer kept going offline, I went in control panel and deleted the intuit printer and put ours back online and it did not help, so I tried to delete ours and was going to try to reinstall it. It is still showing on the control panel (although it still says deleting). We've tried unplugging everything, even the computer. Nothing will print even a test from the notepad, but if I do a test print from the printer itself, it will. How can I fix this?
• Ethernet adapter interfering with Mouse
  • I have tried 2 different mice (a Logitech and a Microsoft) on my laptop running Windows XP Pro SP3, and both of them were jerky. I finally traced the problem to the built-in ethernet adapter. Once I go into the Device Manager and disable the Intel Pro/1000 PL network adapter, then the mouse will be smooth. It will still be smooth even if I subsequently re-enable the network adapter. But if I restart Windows with the network adapter enabled, then the mouse will be jerky again. Not sure what's going on here, maybe it's a resource issue. I noticed that the network adapter is on IRQ 16, and one of the USB Universal Host Controllers is also on IRQ 16. But Windows won't let me change any of the resource settings for the mouse or the network adapter. I also tried a different USB port and still had the same problem. Any idea on how to fix this? If not, then is there a way to disable and enable devices from the command line? I'll just have a script disable and re-enable the network adapter on startup.
• VPN connection dialog box
  • I have a VPN connection configured on several computers that are permanently LAN-connected for Internet access, but I only use the VPN ocassionally. With varying frequency on the different computers, the VPN connection dialog box pops-up while I do unrelated things. On ne computer, it happens in streaks as often as once a minute or so. It is getting really annoying. I have tried deleting the VPN connection and recreating it, checking each parameter to make sure that nothing apparently indicates it is supposed to be always connected or otherwise perfrom this way. Any help on getting the VPN connection dialog box to come up only when I intentiaonlly do so ? Thanks.
• Wireless Zero Configuration
  • Have looked at many solutions to article 871122 problems but cant seem to find one that corrects mine. Our ISP was BT, which turned off WZC. I want to change from BT and have deleted the programmes via Add and Delete Programmes in the Control Panel. Running XP by the way. When the laptop searches for networks it still only finds BT's. Canâ??t seem to turn WZC back on. Can anyone help?
• Home network
  • I have two computers, Desktop and Laptop. Both access internet via my Live Box. Both are set up for Home networking. Laptop running IE7 works fine accessing files on Desktop and printer sharing. Desktop running IE8 is unable to show Laptop in My Network Places and fails to show workgroup computers in ( View workgroup computers),therefore can't access files on Laptop. Have run Home networking wizard several times. Might it be a IE8 issue and if so how do I revert back to IE7. Thank you. Ron.
• Problem with web folders
  • Hi! We want to connect to a web folder using the Windows explorer. When typing for example: https://mydomain.com/documents in Windows Explorer, it will open this in Internet Explorer, and not stay in the Windows Explorer. If we add this address to the web folders in Windows, it works, but only when going through web folders. Is there any possibility to force Windows Explorer to recognize the address as a web folder without going through the web folder hirarchy ? (something like "webfolder:https://mydomain.com/documents") Since we are using this method in a program, the current behaviour is not possible to use. BTW: In Vista it works. David

  • I had a tcp/ip corruption issue that I resolved...am not sure what caused it other than a power outage...after rebooting from resetting my tcp/ip my network connections are not showing and my windows firewall is not available, I tried to enable the service but get the 1068 error. I also get this error when trying to enable windows audio, and my device manager list of devices is empty?? It seems all my plug and play services/items are not functioning properly or are missing in the settings?? Any help is greatly appreciated if I can avoid a windows reinstall.   • A challenging problem. I've done a lot of troubleshooting. So please excuse the lengthy discription, but I'm trying to narrow your thinking up-front. My laptop and desktop are highly similar environments (details below), but on (at least) one particular page of a web site, they receive slightly different html pages from virtually identical http-gets. Both machines have two browsers and both browsers behave the same on the misbehaving PC and both perform properly on the good PC machine. They all work properly on other pages from this web site. When I manually ompare the HTML source code received by the good machine and the bad one, there is always a one line difference between the downloads. The line is missing from the bad download. The line is always: <h ref="/ads/">Adult Services </a> When I manually move the properly received file onto the bad machine, it renders properly. When I manually move the improperly received file on the bad machine to the good machine, it renders the same as the bad machine. When I examine the http-get host header, I see only one parameter in the good machine's "get" that is not present in the bad machine's "get". That parameter is "infopath.1". I do not understand this parameter, nor how this difference could account for the different received files. At one time, Internet Content Advisor was enabled on the bad machine. My troublesheting has disabled it. But maybe the registry is out of sync for this application? This has been the focus of my troubleshooting, but I do not see how it could be responsible for different http responses. The two environments Both machines are running XP-SP3, updated to current levels both running IE-8 and Firefox, updated properly both PCS are on the same LAN segment. They are side by side in my office The bad machine is running Norton Internet Security 2006 and MS Office Suite 2002. The good machine is running Earthlink Protection Center v7 and MS Office Suite 2003 This problem is not intermittent. Either the server is delivering two different downloads, or something on my bad machine is intercepting the html and removing a line of code! I'm out of troubleshooting ideas !!!
• Saving & Deleing wesite from browsing history
  • This is my first questions to this news group. Kindly bear if the question is too long. Iâ??ve Internet Explorer 8.0 in my computer. Recently when I tried to delete some of the web sites from the browsing history (what I mean by browsing history, is, the search pane found in the left top most corner of the window), the entire browsing history got deleted. What I did was Tools > Delete Browsing History > Delete. (At that time of deleting, the Preserve Favorites website data, Temporary Internet files, Cookies and History were checked in). Now I cannot able to store any websites in the browsing history. Each and every time I have to write the complete address of the websites. No drop down list appears in the browsing history. My computer is connected with about 20 other computers through LAN and also through a server in my office. Earlier what happened, when I access any other computer, the link of these computers are also coming in the drop down list (which I donâ??t actually want). Now I have the following questions 1) How can I store / save website address in the browsing history? 2) If required how can I delete some selective websites (but not all) from the browsing history. 3) How can I prevent the link of the other computers in the LAN from entering into the browsing history? Please Help.

  • OK. We have a web server with an internal address 192.168.0.254, and an external address of 12.14.16.18. The way our network is set up, inside our network, on 192.168.0.x, we can only access that server from the internal address. Attempting to access it with the external address fails. This is fine. Here is the problem: We have a Windows 2003 Server which is our primary DNS server, at 192.168.0.246. It has DNS Host entries for intranet.ourdomain.com and security.ourdomain.com, which both point to 192.168.0.254. These entries also exist externally, though godaddy.com or some such, pointing to 12.14.16.18. We also have an internal entry for test1.ourdomain.com, which points to the same internal address, but has no outside entry. I have verified that my system has the primary DNS server, our internal ...246 server. I have verified that it is working by pinging test1.ourdomain.com. It returns the ...254 address no problem. However, if I ping intranet.ourdomain.com, it shows up as security.ourdomain.com, with the 12.14.16.18 address. If my internal DNS server is working, and is first in line, and has a valid internal address for these two domains, why is it giving me the external DNS entry? What is broken? Note that all of this is served up from DHCP by that same Windows 2003 server, and other machines will ping out ...254 in response to those domains. No, it is not my Host file. Phil

  • Have PC running Vista XP Home and connected Printer on home network Have 2 x XP Pro PC on home network and I wish to use printer on Vista machine. Under 'My Network Places' all PC's are detected but when I try to connect to Vista PC (for printer) , it requires a user name and password. !?! The vista machine was set up with 2 accounts but no passwords. I've tried inputting user name of logged on account but no password * as none exists). Fails because blank passwords not allowed!!!! What's going on ????? and how do I connect to printer ?????

  • Hello All, I have an ADSL modem with just a single connection coming outof it, which goes into a simple simple hub to which I've connected several computers. Currently I want to install another computer on which I should be able to do *anything* with it in regard to downloading stuff from the web, which means its pretty open to catching some sort of disease .... For this reason I need it to be seperated from my other computers (only be able talk to the internet, not to any of the other computers I have). I thought of a special kind of switch, one with a single output (to the model) and two or more inputs (from the computers). The data coming from the inputs will only be routed to the output, *not* to any of the other inputs. Ofcourse, any data coming in from the modem for one of the computers will be routed to it (and only it). My question : does some sort of device like it exist (for the consumer-market) ? I've taken a look at NetGear and LinkSys, but can't seem to create a search-query to return anything worthwhile. If anyone knows another solution (*not* involving setting up a seperate computer) I would allso like to hear about it. Regards, Rudy Wieser

  • I have a computer that's running surveillance software. The computer is connected to broadband internet via a d-link router and the router gets dynamic IP from my ISP. I would like to set up the computer so I can view the computer's desktop over the internet on a web browser. that is view the surveillance pictures - since the surveillance software and cameras load automatically when ever the computer boots up. The computer is running a security software called Diginet surveillance software. The connection needs to be done in a way that viewing desktop/surveillance pictures on the web will not disrupt the computer's operations at location . I have tried remote desktop. it's a mess. Does anyone know how to do this using native XP/SP2/SP3 professional objects or free third party software? I would appreciate any pointers. Thanks in advance.

• Connection dropped routinely
  • I am running a Dell Inspiron 8200 With Win. XP SP3. I upgraded to a Netgear DGN 2000 Router / Modem and also installed an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 BG Network Controller. My ethernet connection is a 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller. It doesn't matter whether I connect by cable or wireless, after I am connected, the connection is dropped every 20 sec. for a period of a sec. or two. I get the bubble "limited or no connectivity" followed by "acquiring network address". It then connects again for another 20 sec. I have upgraded the firmware on the router but can't update drivers for the Intel card because connection is constantly dropped. I have turned off firewall settings for Norton Internet Security but it doesn't matter. I suspect setting issues.
• Can't access desktop--ZA Problem
  • Howdy. For years I've had my desktop and then a wireless laptop which was able to access some files on my desktop. All of a sudden, it can't find the network path. When I disable Zone Alarm from the laptop, it works fine. I probably did do a ZA upgrade recently but I'm not sure. I still seem to have addresses listed in the Trusted Zone, but I'm not sure if they are correct. It's been many years since I set it up. Any suggestions/guidance would be appreciated. Mel
• User switch drops wireless network connection
  • XP Pro SP3 on a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with fast user switching enabled and connected to an 802.11g wireless home network. Every time I switch users the wireless network connection is lost and takes a minute or more to reconnect. This is very annoying. How can I prevent this? Thanks. -- .Bill.
• Please help me get Remote Desktop to work.
  • I'm trying to connect through the web browser IE8 to XP Prof host PC. With the ActiveX plugin running I select the desired resolution and click on the connect button. A window then pops up that asks some questions related to printer/file sharing and when I click its connect button a border of a window appears momentarily in the browser and then the ActiveX remote login web page comes back. No error message of any kind is given. I have followed all the steps to the letter on enabling RD support on host PC. For example, I read and followed this page: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/northrup_03may16.mspx On the server side I have disabled windows firewall and My McAfee personal firewall has all IP and ports enabled for IIS and I also added a rule that permits RDP. I also tried disabling that firewall too. I have IIS and WWW serivces installed and port changed from 80 to 50000. I have a linksys 54GL router which forwards ports 443. 3389 and 50000 to my host pc, whose local IP is 192.168.1.100 I just don't get it. All the research I've done says it should work but it instantly closes (doesn't even ask me for username/password) and returns to the IE screen that asks for server and screen size. Without any error messages. Has anyone run into this?
• Network Printer Problems
  • Windows XP PCs/laptops all running on a shared home network. Set up printer connected to one of the PCs for sharing. When attempting to connect one of the PCs(laptops) to a printer, which I can see using browsing, I get an error message (Error: The printer name is not valid). Tried renaming. Current name "HP2200". Highlight the "browsed" printer and click Next, I get the error; "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server. For more information, click help".
• File sharing working one way
  • Can't find the solution in other posts so far. A curious problem. Couldn't ping either way in a 2-computer network. Disabled the firewall and turned the router firewall on and now can ping both ways. On computer #1, I can see the shared folders and files on computer #2 and print to its shared printer. On computer #2, I can see the shared folders on computer #1, but cannot access the files, but can print to its shared printer. Also have a shared USB drive that is visible, but not accessible. I've tried unsharing and resharing the folders to no avail. What am I missing? This was working several weeks ago but has all of a sudden stopped.
• Shared folder over network suddenly asks for password
  • I have 3 computers on my home network, Dad, Son and Laptop. Dad has XP Media center addition, the other two XP Home (all with SP3). I backup Laptop work files to Shared folder on Dad. Suddenly I cannot access shared folder on Dad, which now asks for a password. I do not have users password protected. I have tried every conceivable password I have ever used, with no success. Dad can ping Son and Laptop without any problems and son and laptop can ping Dad. Neither Son nor Laptop can access shared folder on Dad. I have disabled all firewalls. I have simple file sharing enabled on Dad (media center apparently is like XP Pro in allowing this option). I have run and rerun Network Wizard and even renamed all the computers to see what happens. The shared folder on Dad continues to ask for a password whenever I try to access shared folder on Dad from either Son or Laptop. This occured I believe after I deleted another user account on Dad that *was* password protected, but I did not need anymore. The shared folder on Dad obviously has nothing to do with that account. Guest accounts are active on all computers as I've read Microsoft Tec Bulletins that say disabling Guest can cause problems accessing some network resources. This is *not* a problem with a lost password. Dad was never password protected in the first place, other than the single user account now deleted. All computers show up when I check for networked computers on Son, Laptop and Dad. I have even placed Dad outside the router firewall, with no success. I have seen others with this sudden problem but no solution. Any help would be appreciated. ..........Bob
• Cannot load device driver for network adapter code 39
  • After cleaning a virus/trojan from my WinXP system I cannot get my network adapters to load. In Device Manager they both have yellow exclamation marks and the error "Cannot load device driver for network adapter (code 39)". There are 4 other devices called "Wan Miniports" that also have the same error. I've reinstalled windows XP, and reinstalled the device drivers without luck. I also tried various TCP/IP and Winsock fixes without effect. I installed a fresh copy of WinXP in another folder and everything works perfectly so I know my hardware and internet connection are fine. This happened to me last year and I had to reinstall my system, but it took me weeks to reinstall my apps and get every working correctly. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! - Scott.

  • Hello All, I dont have much experience in networking hope some one can help me with this. I am in a school network with ip address 166.X.X.X. My XP PC is connected to the network i have an ip of 166.X.X.X. ( i will name my PC as 'PC A'). For a specific project we purchased a win NT 4.0 workstation PC ( i will call this PC 'PC B') and wanted to connect to our network 166.X.X.X so we decided to do a ICS ( internet connection sharing) with my PC A which is in XP everything went well and the PC B was assigned a ip of 192.168.X.X we are able to surf network with both PC A & PC B . but when we want to share files to PC B from my friends PC whos is in the network with ip 166.X.X.X the PC B does not shows! also when we ping the ip of PC B '192.X.X.X' from our ip 166.X.X.X there is no responce but i am able to share files from PC A and also able to ping from PC A. Is this a limitation in ICS that the client PC will not be shown outside the internal network? any solution to solve this is much appreciated I was suggested that i need to use a dual LAN server if i need to see the clients outside the internal networks... The reason for me to ping is i need to send some packets to this PC B and wants its response to this. Thanks, sorry for long description! Rufus

  • Hi, My Network Space Drive from LaCie doesnt work on my Asus 901 eeepc. I have installed a Nlite version of XP on this laptop, for it is much smaller and faster but doesnt have all the features. There's a big chance I dont have some network proces running or something not installed that is needed for the LaCie drive to work. When installing the LaCie Network Assistant, it sais: script: C:/progfiles/lacie/ethernetagent/bonjour.vbs system cant find the file 80070002 Source (null) Ofcourse I hope I can keep my Nlite-XP so is there anyone who can point me in the direction of which file or process to add to make the drive work? I've looked into this Bonjour process and it seems to be running on my laptop. Thanks! Wouter
• File Sharing in a Peer to Peer Network
  • Hello Everyone: I am trying to implement file sharing in a Windows/XP Peer to Peer Network. I have 10 Windows/XP computers networked together -some of them are allocated to Staff, others are Guest machines. I need the Staff machines to be able to share files and I need those shared files to be inaccessible (and preferably not visible) to the Guest machines. My starting point was to disable Simple File Sharing so that I could use the user level permissions. (Simple File Sharing does work in this configuration, but I would like more access control at a user or machine or workgroup level.) When I try to set permissions, the Shared Document Properties shows me local objects only, not other machines/users on the network i.e. in Permissions/Add/Select Users or Groups, I am not able to select anything other than the local machine.   • Dear All, I am glad to be back here. I have a problem with my windows XP computer; I have a wireless modem to connect to my ISP the drivers installed successfully. However I have to use also my internal modem by going through the new connection wizard and by selecting to set it up manually. the problem is that when I arrive at that step it gives me only "connect using a broadband connection that is always on"; the choices to choose "Connect using a dial up modem" and "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password" are not given, they seem not highlited and not given as an option. But i want to use the first option in order to be connected. Could you help me please? Thank you in advance!
