- Outlook Express6 Font and Encoding Questions

Can somebody please explain to me what all the font and encoding options in
WinXP SP3/IE 7/OEx 6 do? I know how to set these options, but I am not
really sure what all the various options do. For example:
What are the encoding options supposed to do?
What is the difference between Western European ISO, Western Europe Windows,
UTF-7, UTF-8, User defined, and how do those affect what is typed or read?
What are the best settings for newsreaders and for email, or at least what
is "standard", both text and HTML?
I keep getting strange characters showing up in emails I receive, both news
messages and mail messages, such as the one below:

I have no idea what that character is supposed to be, and others also appear
from time to time. Is this due to my email settings, my encoding, or due to
the sender's setup, or even due to the ISP or some such? Is that character
some kind of punctuation or what?
I currently have my options set for W. Euro ISO encoding, using Incised901
Bd BT for proportional font, Lucida Console for fixed font, mail setting
HTML quoted printables, News sending format plain text, MIME, encoding none,
news compose Lucida Console 10 pt, mail compose Incised901 Bd BT 10 pt.
Is that good, bad, or indifferent?
Is there any MSKB info on all this stuff? The OEx Help files tell you HOW
to set the options, but it really does not explain what the options do

- A problem in OE 6 - can't import messages anymore

My system C drive on my main machine failed the other day with a refusal to
even have any OS recognized. So I replaced it, and restored an image from
True Image from the recent past.
Apparently there was some small corruptions in that image. And I have a
strange situation in Outlook Express 6.
All works well, except for when I click on FILE>IMPORT>MESSAGES to import
some dbx files from the past, or another machine running OE6. I have these
DBX files stored in a folder on my main machine, and the import has always
worked very nicely.
But now, when the import screen comes up, it is totally blank - nothing in
it.
I know a work around to do the import. But I'd prefer it it worked normally.
I can create a new folder in LOCAL FOLDERS, and name it to what I'd like.
Then I can go into my DBX archive folder, pick a DBX file, and rename it to
what I just created in my OE. Then replace the new blank folder with the
folder from the archive, by just overwriting it. That does work - I tried
it, and it still does work OK.
I clicked on FILE>IMPORT>ADDRESS BOOK, and a "good:|" window did show there.
Does anyone know how to "repair" OE6? I am running IE8, so some of the
suggestions I've seen won't work, as they imply that OE is part of IE, and I
don't want to mess with OE8.

I setup OE for charter email.
pop.charter.net
smtp.charter.net
Email worked fine for two days, then I had the following symptom.
I could not send email, I found that I had an email trapped in the
outbox that would not send. I deleted the email in the outbox, and I
received email as normal. Webmail works fine.
Charter doesn't support OE. They won't help.
I found the following pdf that has,
"directions to setup an SMTP authentication in your emal program"
It uses >mail.cs-1.com< for incoming mail and >smtp.charter.net<
for outgoing mail. Then you must check the box for "My server requires
Authentication" Also you must check another box in the outgoing mail
server window. "use same settings as my incoming mail server"
I would like some input about the information before I try it.

- Outlook Express Dictionary

I had to restore my computer to the original configuration, format and
reload. Everything is working great except the dictionary in OE6. It does
not recognize any word. When I do a spell check, it highlights every word,
even those that are spelled correctly. Is there an easy fix for this?

When I did a search of emails for "invitation" the search did not find all
such emails. I tried again, and same results. Why did the OE search
function fail to find emails with the word "invitation" included in the
subject? So is the search function typically unreliable?

- Loss of OE Attachment

Two computers with XP and SP3 running OE6 for the past year with no
problems.
The same e-mail message was downloaded on both computers. On one, an
attachment was displayed and opened normally. On the other, the OE paper
clip indicated an attachment; but it wasn't listed on the "Attach:" line
when the message was opened. That line was blank, but had a blue
background.
Both computers displayed the message itself properly and handled subsequent
messages with attachments OK.
Any thoughts on the missing attachment?

- moving messages from SENT folder

I want to move the messages from my SENT folder to another to save them ( I
have over 3000 & think its getting big enougH.). but when I try to move them
they do NOT keep the sent to information.
I can move them to my DRAFT folder without losing that information, but that
does not help.
what can I do to get these saved with all the "TO:" information correct

For some reason, every now and then (and it just happened now), all of the
sudden my Deleted Items folder shows a bunch (206 now) of emails that I had
completely deleted before! I usually have only 10 to 20 emails in that
folder. Any help, please? I'm running XP Home and MS Outlook 2003 SP3.

I recently lost ability to launch a usenet link from IE8 favourites.
Normally OE6 is launched and the newsgroup opened. IE8 has stopped working
in this way even when the news URL is copied directly into the address bar.
Chrome and Firefox browsers continue to work normally and automatically
launch OE. I have not (knowingly) changed any IE8 settings and it is my
default browser.
Advice much appreciated.

Conclusion
Bella tried to convest him to change her so can be togher forever. But he

Using Firefox 3.5.7 and Outlook Express 6. Suddenly I find a particular
email message in the deleted file and the sender of that message on the
Blocked Sender's List. I have not created any message rule to cause this. If
I delete the sender from the Blocked Sender's list it simply reappears?

Hi:
I saved all e-mails by using, .... Tool - Option - Maintenance ..... and
stored in 'New Folder' in My Document.
However, when I changed name from "New Folder" to "OE Backup," all
e-mails are gone, although names of all folders are there, such as Inbox,
Sent, Delete and etc. are there. They are completely empty, thus I lost all
e-mails accumulated over two years.
How to restore all e-mail lost?

- Where is address file ??

I used the Gateway 'restore' disk to put a new OS (WinXP Home) back on my
computer. It puts all your old files into a 'backup' folder so all the old
stuff is still available - but how do I find my old address book. I have
searched for *.wab and don't see any results. I presume it was in the
user/local settings/application data/identities/xxxxxxx/microsoft/outlook
express
However, everything in this location is years old, and contains nothing that
looks like an address book. I know I should have exported a copy - but I
didn't. So where is it hiding - anyone know?

- Receive messages in Inbox of OE months after they were sent

tCan anyone help with this? What could possibly cause messages to not
appear in the OE Inbox until weeks or months later after being sent? OE is
set up to keep a copy of messages on the server when downloading to OE.
Will see a message in the server Inbox, but not in OE Inbox. Months later,
suddenly it is showing in the OE Inbox ( but now is not showing in the isp
inbox) I have never seen this before & tryingg to help someone who is having
this issue. The person says they do not keep alot of messages in OE, reads &
deletes them, doesn't use the OE Inbox for storage either.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

- Transferring OE6 -- Including Newsgroups

I use two computers (home and road) and MS-XP with OE6 on both. I transfer
the message store folder "Outlook Express" from one to the other as needed.
Everything transfers between the two computers just fine except the
newsgroups. There are .dbx files for them in the transferred folder, but OE
doesn't see them.
I'll guess that some registry keys have to be set. Where do I find the
instructions to do that?

Hi: My spelling checker in msn does not work any more, When I go to Select
spelling checker settings and select a spelling dictionary only French
dictionaries are available not English which is what I want.
I have Microsoft Word on my computer and the spell cheker there wirks
fine.( in English, of course)

Got message "do you want to compact files". I hit yes, it started, then
froze. File folder's are still intact, but most emails are no longer saved.
