- Other screen resolutions for remote desktop
-
Is it possible to select other sizes for remote desktop than what is
displayed as default? None of the sizes is good enough when running
windowed. Either to small or to big. Want to have it almost maximized
(wnd without scrollbars).
One solution that works well for me but it is a bit heavy. I start a
Virtual PC session which I have sized as large as I want it and inside
that VM I run a full screen remote desktop session. Works pretty well
but an extra step.

I repeatedly encounter this error when trying to apply the update to my

- Bought a new laptop. it has Vista 64-bit. How compatable are files
-
Hi. I was using Windows XP on my desktop before. There was some changes I had
to make with the hardware. I am currently on my laptop with Windows Vista
64-bit.
I plan on installing XP or Windows 7 hopefully this weekend. But since it
may take longer than expected: I do have certain files I transfered from my
old hard-drive in an external hard-drive enclosure through my laptop onto an
external hard-drive.
I was wondering if I edit the files, the rtf files (rich text files) or the
mp3 metadata for instance: Will it be a problem when those files get
re-introduced into a 32-bit environment or another OS? I doubt it since a
file is a file. If I download or view a file from myspace or soundcloud, or
microsofts site I am pretty sure it is irrelevant what operating system was
used to make the program. As long as I have the right player, program,
viewer, application, etc. I know if a file is 64-bit it won't work in 32-bit.
So I can start editing right?
Thank you.

I have windows Vista on my laptop. I didn't like Windows Defender running
so I typed "msconfig" and unchecked that block. When the computer
restarted it kept telling me it can't find Windows Explorer so I shut down
the computer completely. When I turned it back on I have not icons, no
task bar. All that comes up is my wallpaper. I can't even do a

- HP Color Laserjet 3500 on LPT1 will not print

I changed laptops in a docking station and used a drivers CD to install the

downloaded the latest drivers from HP and installed them, but this hasn't
fixed the problem. The original laptop still prints fine from that docking
station.
The old laptop was WinXP, this one is Vista. I ran the "FixIt" diagnostics
but it said all problems were fixed, and it still won't print.
Any suggestions for diagnosing and fixing this problem?

- BCD error...
-
I'm trying to revive an HP Pavilion a1730n that won't boot, due to not
being able to read the boot configuration data.
From what I've read, alot of the fixes are based off of booting from
the Vista DVD & chosing a repair option.
This didn't come with a Vista DVD, I justr have the recovery disks you
can create, but using them looks like it wants to wipe out & install
from scratch, which is my last option!
I have a docking station & can access the drive from another computer.
Is there a way I can fix, repair or replace the BCD file that way?

- Can't Install WinVista Service Pack 1...
-
On a Windows Vista Ultimate machine, when trying to install Windows Vista sp
1 from a CD one of the following two errors occur: 1) The machine says that
it must be rebooted to continue with the install. After rebooting (several
times sometimes) the same error will likely appear, or 2) The installation
just randomly fails (ie stops installing) and a generic 'Failed to Install
Service Pack 1' appears. The WinVista sp1 installation also fails when
trying to use Windows Updates. There are other machines on the network that
are basically just like this one as far as hardware and software and they
were able to update to WinVista Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 without any
problems.
We tried to disable the AV software and other random services. Are there any
tips, tricks, or suggestions in this scenario in order to successfully get
WinVista sp1 installed ? We would obviously like to not have to reinstall
the OS, applications, and data.
TIA ...

- Quick Note: GLOBAL EMPIRE IS CLOSING HIRING SEASON
-
Regrading my Global Empire:
We've hired enough horsemen and staffers for March2010. Will re-start
hiring in April2010.
The 2 openings we still have are:
a) My Horse Gloriosus is currently serving as Senator. He needs a groomer,
entry-level is OK. Must own tools and have high tolerance of animal's
gastric disturbances, which entails prolonged exposure to methane vapors.
b) Need a door holder for Gloriosus. He is unable to use legs for that, and
recentlky he got a case of "Charlie Horse".
When he walks into Congress, he does not want to be faced with door issues.
He wants to gallop into center stage and engage delegatres in a meaningful
roar.

- ABOUT LIGHTS ON A TYPICAL LAPTOP MADE IN 2005-2010
-
Don't do this but being in electronics for almost 25 years I did:
I modified my HP laptop cuz its annoying bright blue lights were distracting
at night.
I opened case and installed a switch which shuts off all LED's that face me
and annoying glow in darkness, also good for battery life.
I only left one LED for optical drive so I wouldn't disturb it when it's
reading/writing - which is indicated by its own LED, which I incidentally
can't access anyway.
My laptop is dark at night if I activate this home-made switch.
But this is just an innuendo about annoying lights.
Remember how it was 20 years ago, when every extra light added that aura of
"high-tech", "star wars" type of impression?
And Blue LED until recent years was impossible, due to semiconductors
limitation.
Now it's the opposite extreme.
What used to be rare, is now pushed down our throats in excessive quantity.
My HP laptop came with ALL lights implemented as Blue LED's!! What's up
with that? To tell us "we're so trendy, and we mastered MIT invention" to
a point where I have 9 bright LED's constantly glowing in my face while I
like to work at night.
I had to tame down all of it.
Just a typical social phenomenon of Capitalism. If something is rare,
there's demand for it and profits to be made, there're people working hard
to achieve this, but once product appears on store shelves, it goes on and
one into OVERSUPPLY. Until crisis strikes. Same with Blue LED's. Once it
was impossible (only Red, Green, Yellow and Infrared existed), then it was
possible but expensive, now it's excessive.
Everybody does Blue LED.
Ohh yeah I wouldn't want to stare into RED LED's all night, that would be
the worst cuz red is an Alarming color to Humans and many animals.
But a little green wouldn't hurt.
Most importantly - a little NOTHING would be best!
A kind of s witch to disable all these lights.
Being an electronics specialist I did it with own hands and parts from
Digikey/Newark and Radioshack.
But it should've been thought of by Hewlett-Packard.
I do have a much smaller and less annoying lights on Asus laptop maybe HP
could learn from it!

::Guess I am a minimalist at heart and see no need for 100 or more

never going to have to type in more than a several languages/alphabets

- Windows Back-Up(centre) stopped automatic BU
-
Since 2 weeks it has stopped.
In the BU-centre Wizard at "What drives you want in the back-up
record?" is written:
Stations
Unknown (C:) (Missing) - 0 bytes - 0 bytes
Unknown (E:) (Missing) - 0 bytes - 0 bytes
They are unchecked and greyed-out (uncheck able)
The C: is on a SSD on SATA 1 and the E: drive is on an old-fashioned
drive on SATA 3.
On SATA 2 a disk entirely is taken by Linux (Ubuntu).
The start-up sequence in the BIOS is SATA2 (Linux), 1 (Windows Vista
Buss.), 3 (Windows data)
At start-up first a boot manager asks if I will start Ubuntu or
Windows: then, choosing Windows, Vista starts (the Windows Boot
Manager exists, but has only one choice (Windows) and therefore does
not appear).
Does it has to do with the boot sequence?
Who knows the answer(s)?
(In the Dutch MS.Vista Newsgroup I got 0 answers.)

- Why is the TRUTH about general Vista SR so difficult to obtain?
-
Why, why, why, is Speech Recognition so difficult
to get the "correct" skinny on, here and now.
Is it because in general that people are generally so
ignorant of the general subject of SR, as it pertains
to Vista?
We Generals want to know.
Is SR worth a flying **** generally; if not, why.
Will it EVER be worth a flyng **** ? If so when?
These guys seem to think SR will be the cat's meow
in about 20 years, if you look near the end of
their article:

SR might even be better than non-skid toilet paper, by then.
I wanna talk to my computer, futhermore I want it to
talk back to me in an intelligent manner, kinda like
the computer HAL did in the old movie:

Is that too much to ask, in this technological age?

- Joining Vista Prof. to domain
-
Why does it take so long for Vista to join a domain?
I have a vista pro machine. Locally everything works fine
local user signs on builds the desktop quickly.
From the local profile I join a domain. It finds the domain
quickly, then asks to reboot.. I reboot sign on as the
admin of the domain.. Next step is to build the desktop
for the user I'm signing on as.. It just sits on the welcome
screen spinning.
I do not experience this problem on XP machines joining
this same domain. I've also tested it on a Windows 7 machine
and did not experience this problem.. I can't figure out why
it takes so long on Vista.. I actually never get to the point
of building the desktop..I don't really see any hard drive
activity either?
Anyone experience this?

What is the administrator command prompt for 'defrag.exe' in 'cmd'? I am

It seems windows defrag was hijacked by DiskeeperLite, a downloaded program

not available in my Vista Home Premium, SP2, 32 bit.
Is there a way to recover it?
If not, that's not all bad, because I have 'Defraggler', which works quite

- Vista has slowed down, how to speed up?
-
Dear All,
I have a trusty laptop running Vista Ultimate with 2 Gb RAM.
When I first got it it ran programmes like Mozilla Firefox and the Office
Suite rapidly, opening the apps quickly when required.
Over time programmes began to slow down upon opening. I also tried the new
Windows 7 which was OK but had a few drawbacks.
So I bit the bullet and re-set my machine back to how it was when it was
new.
Reloaded my apps and data files, speed returned.
Now it's slowing up again after only 4 months.
Question: do these proprietary programs like Norton etc actually clean up
the computer and restore its trusty speed in opening apps?
If so, which one have you found to be the best in practice?
Please advise

- Questions about limited(standard) account
-
I have Home Premium. Last nite I was surfing the 'net when all of a sudden a
window pops up & tells me my PC is infected. The name of the program is Vista
Antivirus 2010. I was using the standard account. I had previously downloaded
& installed Malwarebytes, so I logged off the standard account & logged onto
the administrator account. I started the program & updated it & ran a full
scan. It found 2 files both of which were in the standard account. It deleted
them. Please explain in laymans terms how & why the infection was isolated to
the standard account. Are there super viruses, trojans, malware, etc that are
able to infect the whole PC from the limited account? Somehow the program
messed up the standard account because when I tried to open Windows Explorer,
a window popped up asking which program to use. Ultimately, I ended up
deleting the standard account & creating a new one. So far, so good. Is Vista
more secure in this respect than the XP limited account? Is it possible to
make the standard account in Home Premium more secure by tweaking certain
settings or installing a cetain software program or do I need the Pro
version? I have Malwarebytes, Security Essentials, Spybot, Adaware & AVG
running in the background & it slows down my PC even with 4 MB of RAM. Can
you recommend a program(preferably free) that is antivirus, antimalware &
antirootkit all in one?
Thank you.

- Vista 64 - IE7 default window size
-
I am running Vista Home Premium 64 bit.
I use IE7 (lots of problems with IE8). I can't get it to open in th
window size I want. It has a mind of its own and drives me crazy.
tried all the tricks like closing (X) with Shift and/or Ctrl, opening
second window, resizing etc I could find. Nothing helps. Probably no
applicable to 64 bit Vista.
Is there a fix? Why for goodness sake couldn't Microsoft make it t
remember the size/position at closing? Every el-cheapo application ca
do that.
Thanks
Jo
