  • HP Printer software Fatal Error at 94%
    • Recently my HP OfficeJet L7680 froze up while scanning and wouldn't work even after rebooting. It has worked for over a year. I did the obvious - downloaded the latest drives from HP and got the Fatal Error at 94% . I wrote HP and have since had TEN emails from them suggesting all sorts of ways to fix this problem. I turned off the firewall and antivirus, registered and unregistered DLLs, muddled around in the registry, run the L3.bat file, run an HP cleaner and the Microsft cleaner, removed all HP programs using control Panel, reinstalled (Fatal error every time) about 100 times and rebooted every time using the original CD, and the downloaded full and basic drivers. It is supposed to be being escalated to Advanced Technical SUpport at HP but I haven't heard back from them in a couple of days. Using Add printer in Control Panel I was able to add the printer using the .inf file in one of the temporary folders the installation created. But I am unable to scan to OCR using any of the scan programs that come with Office or Vista. Webscan using IE and the IP address also has no OCR scan. A search on Google found many people with all kinds of HP printers are having the exact same problem, Fatal Error at 94%, but none of them has a solution that works. Mine worked for over a year - now I can't reinstall it. No new hardware or software was added recently. Did anyone out there ever solve this problem and get the Hp Solution Center to work again? How? Mich

  • New IE 9 will not work in Windows XP - another fuc job by the expert
    • The newest version of Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Internet Explorer will feature full hardware acceleration and a new Javascript engine that engages multiple processor cores for faster rendering, the company has announced. The new version aso reverses the software giant's reluctance to adapt to HTML 5. The company released a developer preview of Internet Explorer 9 at the MIX10 developer conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday. Rough Draft The preview is not a fully functioning browser, lacking crucial tidbits such as an address bar, for instance. It's designed to give developers a feel for the core capabilities of what will eventually be released. Microsoft isn't saying when it will come out. In a statement Wednesday, the company said it expects to release new preview versions every eight weeks until the release goes to beta, but it did not say when that might occur. The new version will feature full hardware acceleration of graphics and text, support for HTML 5, CSS3 and a new Javascript engine that takes advantage of multicore processors. The advances are meant to reduce limitations on Web design and development imposed by current implementations, Microsoft said. Consequently, the new browser will not work on Windows XP. from: http://www.technewsworld.com/story/Microsoft-Gives-Devs-a-Glimpse-of-HTML-5-Friendly-IE9-69565.html?wlc=1268863123

  • Can't delete file
    • I have a folder that was named something random like fsad3ld567g. I was able to rename the folder anything I wanted to. I renamed it to \top The two files in it are update.exe and updatexx.dll or something close. When I tried to delete either one of them I get access denied. http://i42.tinypic.com/24fbwi8.jpg I also ran the command line and tried to remove the directory. Any suggestions?

  • make a menu when burning a mastered dvd
    • So I can burn a dvd to play in a dvd player, and I understand a genera menu comes up when playing on the dvd player - but the problem I' facing is getting the -separate files to show up in a particular order- For example, if I have a tv show, I'd like the menu to show up as ep1 then 2, then 3, so that they would play in order. I'm not sure if this is possible with the windows vista burning, bu it's fairly important for me. Please help! Thanks -- sweetz88

  • Answer to the most annoying problem of Windows 7
    • This message was posted here because: 1. I couldn't find any newsgroup on Microsoft Communities for Windows 7 (which I believe is an absolute must) 2. the program mentioned at the end would also work for Vista. From day one of upgrading to Windows 7, I was faced with the unpleasant reality that Win7 doesn't remember the size and position of folders. To further torture me, for some reason unknown to me, it began to restrict some programs' windows--such as IE , Outlook, Chrome, and a few other--to a fixed size and position, not allowing any change no matter how many times I resized, repositioned and restarted them. I even went as far as deleting the "frame" entry in the registry for some programs such as Outlook, but it just made the window to open in a new smaller uncompromising size and position! After a very long time spend on searching the net and reading no-solution answers, all I was able to find a little utility called "ShellFolderFix" which through its awkward interface, solved the problem for Windows folders, but not the programs. I read comments saying that they had bad experience with some paid programs (such as Windows Manager) which allowed fixing the size and position of program windows and nobody knew of anything that worked. Tired of spending more hours than a fulltime job on the issue, I was about to give up when on my very last try I stumbled upon a fantastic *little* freeware developed by someone in Japan which not only allows for fixing the size and position of folders as well as *program* windows, but it also has many other features which I hadn't even heard before. Furthermore, it's only 60 kb, doesn't require installation (just run the file), and it allows for selective fixing of the size and position of the program Windows, and it also works on XP, Vista and Windows 7! Why such a long post on my little discovery? because through my many days of searching, I came across many people with the same problem, and thought that the least I could do is to share this wonderful solution with as many people as I can and save them the time and trouble of trying things that won't work. Program's name is "Pitaschio" (no, not pistachio!) Link: http://pitaschio.ara3.net Enjoy, Brian

  • How to Sort Desktop Icons
    • At times, your desktop shows icons sorted alphabetically in two groups. All users Desktop, and user Desktop. Create a temporary desktop folder. Copy the icons from the Windows Explorer Desktop into this folder. Now delete the desktop icons. Copy the icons from the temporary desktop folder to the Windows Explorer Desktop. Now your desktop will be sorted alphabetically in one group. -- Lassar

  • Charging an IPod with USB
    • I'm in China where their electrical supply is 220V. I am using my laptop to charge my stepson's IPod. However, he is sometimes at his father's house where he only has access to a desktop which is using the 220V electrical supply. Does the desktop USB connection supply the same amount of power as my laptop USB connection or will I toast his IPod when using the USB connection on the desktop? In other words, do all USB connections supply the same amount of output power, regardless of the input voltage? Please excuse my ignorance and thank you in advance for any assistance. • TROJ_Gen.MZ40M3 PrevX
    • I use Trend Internet Security (pre-installed) on a Dell Computer and Malwarebyte as virus scanners. Yesterday Trend found a virus "TROJ_Gen.MZ40M3" in File "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\wr91562.dll". Malwarebyte did not find any infections in this file. Trend did not take any action but merely redirected me to the MS Windows update page. I have sent an email to Trend about 4 hours ago but so far have only received an aknowledgement but as yet no solution. Googling for "TROJ_Gen.MZ40M3" resulted in no hits. A scan for "wr91562.dll" resulted in only 1 hit by for the company supplying "PrevX 3.0" They claimed that they could remove this virus. I have never heard of PrevX but googling resulted in a large number of hits with some of them claiming that PrevX is a scam. My question - does anyone know anything about this virus and/or PrevX? Thanks in advance. JimF

(Running XP Home Edition, version 2002, SP-3, IE-8, OE-6, classic mode, via wi-fi spots.) Question #1: On my Vista system, under Disk Cleanup, one has the option to delete the following, among others: Debug Dump Files System Error Memory Dump Files System Error Minidump Files Per User Archived Windows Error Rep By default these are not checked on my system. Is there any reason why I can't delete those files? Question #2: Related to this question, on my Windows 2000 system, under Dick Cleanup, there is an option to: Compress Old Files. Any problems likely to be associated with selecting that option? Question #3: Finally, related to this question, on my XP system, not only does the "Compress Old Files" option exist, there is also an option to delete "Catalog Files For The Content Indexer". • Help undoing virus damage
    • About a week ago I had the "Vista Antivirus 2010" virus on my computer I was able to get rid of it pretty quickly with AVG, but since then have been having an annoying (but not debilitating) problem. The Vista Antivirus 2010 appears on your computer pretending to be a ne program downloaded through vista updates, and lets you know that yo have viruses on your computer. Its main purpose is a financial scam: t remove the viruses you need to pay for the "full version" of th program. To stop you from being able to remove it easily, it makes it s that whenever you open an .exe program on your computer it will ope instead, and then determins whether the program is a threat or not. Fo example, I was able to run Firefox, but I had to trick it to let me ru AVG However, now that it is gone, I am still having trouble running .ex files. When I attempt to run one, it prompts me to select the progra that I want to use to open the file, which is not possible since that i the program that should open it (does that make sense?). I have had t redo all of my shortcuts, and still need to "run as administrator" an then give the program permission to run each time I know that this is a long explanation. Any suggestions on how I coul get rid of this issue and run program normally Thanks -- nlp

  • Intermittant Connection to Usenet
    • I am using Vista Home. SP1 does not load and always removes itself. WAN Miniport (SSTP) is flagged as not operating properly. I use Newsrover as a newsreader and NewsGuy for usenet connections. Both worked perfectly for years. I just added a D-Link (model DIR-615) router to my sytem and everything seems to work fine, except for one thing. I'm getting loss of connection with the NewsGuy servers. I've contacted them, but they say everyone is running OK, and i've never had problems before. When i download files, things are OK for a while, then connectivity drops off and eventually stops. Since the only thing that's changed is the new D-Link router, i suspect this is the problem. I've tried changing ports and i've checked the D-Link setup to make sure everything is as it should be. I am using a switched cable connection (not wireless) on this computer. Could the WAN Miniport be the issue? How do you fix this? Any ideas? Any other fixes? TIA!

  • mstsc fails to connect on one of two laptops
    • I have to nearly identical HP laptops. Both are the same model, both are running Vista64 Home Premium. With mstsc, I can connect to my XP Pro SP3 system with no trouble at all. But on the other one, the connection fails with an illuminating "Cannot connect" message. No details as to why. I tried copying the Default.rdb file from the machine that can connect to the other one. That made no difference. I tried connecting as a different user, creating another .rdp file, but that didn't work either. Any ideas? Thanks, Jason

  • Scan disk will not run at windows startup
    • My OS is Win Vista 64 Home Premium. After scheduling a scandisk, and rebooting, I get the following error: Cannot open volume for direct access. The type of the file system is NTFS. Windows has finished checking the disk. Scandisk never runs and computer goes directly into windows but tries to do a scandisk at every startup and gives the same message. Microsoft seems to have no help for this problem. I sincerely appreciate any help. Thanks

  • How to find file causing backup failure Access Denied 0x80070005?
    • Apparently at least one "Document" file on my Vista laptop is causing File Backup to fail "Access Denied" 0x80070005. I read lots of google on this but most points to something like: "This error occurs because the recovery partition is enabled for File Backup or System Restore and is almost full. To work around this, do not select D:\ as a backup source. Also, go to System Protection in Control Panel and make sure that D:\ is not enabled for restore points." This is on an external disk so none of that stuff would seem to apply. If I unselect "Documents" from the stuff to be backed up, it works fine. When it fails, some files have been backed up successfully. But there doesn't seem to be any useful logging or error event reporting to help narrow it down finer than this. I even tried it with UAC disabled. Still no joy. The machine is also being backed up by WHS nightly with no apparent problems. Any suggestions how to narrow this down to the "Document" file(s) Vista Backup is unhappy about??!? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

  • Default zip file icon
    • How can I get my Windows zip icon back? Thanks to Ramesh I can now open zip files but thee Internet Explorer icon is being used as the zip file icon. How can I get it back? I'm not too computer literate when it comes to working on H_keys in the registry, if that's what it takes, but I can follow good instructions. Can a clever person help me out please?

  • Defragging
    • Hello I sometimes run a defrag program, tho I'm not sure it helps an awful lot. I generally use the built-in Windows utility. There are a lot of other defraggers out there. I am not looking for recommendations. My question, - do all defraggers use the same 'logic' or 'policy' about how & where files are positioned and arranged on the C drive ? Thanks KK

  • Where to post replies
    • When replying to a news message, is it preferred to have the reply beneath the message being addressed or above it? I suppose there are supporters of each, but where do the people who answer these questions prefer the reply to be? It would be great if the message trail were uniform.
