if I do install?
I have read a few rave reviews on the net but would really appreciate any
comments from you guys here. I still see recomendations for Malwarebytes and
other stuff. So how many people here are in favourof MSE ?

- Ext. HD previously recognized, currently not
-
I am running XP SPK3 on an inspiron 8500. It came with XP Pro, SPK's added on
later. I have a buslink CO-80-U2FE (firewire/USB 2.0) ext. HD (ext. power
source)that originally worked on Windows 98, then later on XP pro up to about
SPK2 I think. I have much data archived on it I wish to retrieve. I plug it
into USB port as before and my computer does not recognize that anything has
been plugged in. I have tried different coords, firewire, and different
computer with comparable OS. Buslink site says that it is plug and play with
XP on up. Any suggestions on TS steps?

I have an inspiron 8500 with XP SPK3 on it. The laptop came with XP Pro and
the SPK's were added later. I have a buslink CO-80-U2FE that worked with
Windows 98 and initially with XP maybe up to SPK2. I use it infrequently so I
didn't find out until much later that it is no longer recognized after some
of the upgrades. It has an external power supply. When I plug it into the USB
port, nothing happens. Same thing when I plug it into another computer with
newer OS, hadn't had the opportunity to try older. It doesn't show up in
device manager either. Any suggestions for TS steps?

- How to disable auto lock
-
By the group policy, all PC's which are joined to the domain are
forced to be locked after 15 minutes of inactivity. Is there any way to
disable this auto lock on client-side?
The situation is like the following. I am using a virtual machine and
this is also joined to the domain (using "Bridged connection"). When I
am using my PC, I often running the virtual machine too, but I do not
constantly use it. When I am trying to use the virtual machine, it is
often locked. I think disabling the lock in a VM does not cause any
security hole, because the real host PC will be locked when I am not
using it.
I was thinking about creating a utility that send a bogus mouse
movement message to the system, but is there any cleaner way to do
this? Or is there already a utility like it?

-
I have an expired security certificate. I have created a new one using
selfcert.exe and installed it. On my laptop I was able to delete the expired
certificate from IE \ Internet Content\ Certificates on my desktop only the
new certificate shows in IE.
I know the expired certificate is not hurting anything, but I would like to
delete it anyway (and why is not showing under "All Certificates"?)
I also looked in the registry under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\My\Certificates and
that key is totally empty.

After recent bad experiences with CA Anti-virus (false positives), I'm
thinking of switching to MSE. I downloaded the setup file but have not

I know it's only been out for a short while, but has anyone bad, or good,

Should I uninstall my current AV program before installing MSE?
I also run Windows Defender. Will that conflict with MSE, or should it be
uninstalled also?

- OT: Windows 7 (XP with a new look!)
-
What a heap of crap, ...not just Windows 7 but, also the Asus X5DIJ laptop
that I just bought for my Aunty !!!
Having just finished a late shift at work, I thought I'd run the Asus
"Recovery Disc Creation" procedure, (Laptop arrived this morning, just
before I had to go to work), so that it gets done. ....ready for when I
take it in to her tommorrow morning. The supplied "AI Recovery" has been
running for over 45 minutes, first creating a backup image, then ISO files,
...then it finally burnt the 1st ISO image to DVD+r ...or they may be -r'
discs btw, not sure now, (good wuality ones btw), ....and then the f*****g
thing decided to verify the first DVD+r that had been burnt.
Over 45 minutes !!!!!, ...it's 00:55am, I would really like to go to bed and
sleep !!!, ...and it was still verifying that 1st DVD+r when I came out to
my office here to have a rant.
I'm 54 years old and have been using PC's since they were invented, and with
all the hardware and software "development" across the past THIRTY years
there appears to be NO decrease in the time it takes the b****y things to
b****y well get on and do something !!!
During recent months, I've been used to Norton Ghost 14.0 backing up my main
PC hard-drive in less than 6 minutes (internal SATAII hd to SATAII hd's).
So quite what this heap of crap is up to - goodness only knows !
best regards,
Richard

- Help with a batch file
-
I have an application to image my hard disk partitions. I can run the
application from commandline, specifying, among othjer options, the
partition to target, and the location and name of the output image
file.
Here's what I want to do.
List all the existing image files in the output path.
They will be in the format C_Drive-001.tbi, and C_Drive-002.tbi etc.
I want to find the seqence number of the last file, and use it to
generate the filename for the next file. In this case it will be
C_Drive-003.tbi.
On the succesfull completion of the image, then delete the oldest
image file, leaving 2 files there.
I will then run this script as a scheduled task to regularly image my
system.
So I need to know, how to parse the output of a DIR C_Drive*.tbi /o-D /
b to find the seqence number of the current image file, and then pass
that to the next line which executes the image program.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

- I.E. & Fiefox Browser Problems
-
I have a system that has Windows XP installed and "Internet Explorer"
stopped working months ago, but I wasn't concerned with it because I
had Mozilla Firefox installed. Now that brower is not working.
When I attemtpt to start Internet Explorer all I get is a pop-up that
says "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience."(And there is an option to send an
error report to Microsoft).
I used the search on the "Start" Menu which allowed me to download
Windows Explorer 8 again. When I attemtped to install it I get a pop-
up titled "iesetup.exe - Entry Point Not Found" that says:
"The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the
dynamic library SHLWAPI.dll." (Also, I cliked on properties on the
I.E. icon and erased something to do with the "path", and now the icon
and the icon on the desktop and on the "Start" menu are non existent.
Also, when I attempt to start Firefox I get a pop-up that syas:
"firefox.exe Bad Image"
"The application or DLL C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\xul.dll is
not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation
diskette."
The only way for me to get online is to use the search feature I
mentioned. But the window will crash if I click anything that is
supposed to bring up another window.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

- Active drive and System drive
-
Yesterday I was looking at an HP Pavilion computer that suddenly stopped
booting for a new client. Windows would start, flash a blue screen and
restart. I loaded Bart PE and could view the data on both drives. I
noticed that one smaller drive (Samsung) had Windows/Program Files/etc
on it, and the 2nd larger drive (WDC) did also. The client had said
someone else installed a new drive in the machine, which I assumed was
the larger drive (I was wrong).
So I switched the boot options to boot from the 2nd drive (Samsung),
since there are two drives in the machine. Then XP MC loaded. The
larger drive (WDC) was assigned as C: and the smaller drive (Samsung) as
J:. Windows was using C: even though I set it to boot from the Samsung.
If I restarted and set the boot to the WDC, it failed. Setting it back
to the Samsung, it booted and I looked at Disk Management and found that
the WDC was listed as System and Samsung was listed as Active. I
removed all the Windows files, Program Files, and root files from the
Samsung and it still boots correctly.
It boots okay but it still seems backwards. Any thoughts?

- ethernet controller issue - wizard cannot find.
-
hi, i posted previously but need to clarify.
my device mgr indicates no driver installed for my ethernet controller (NOT
the ethernet adapter) as well as the video and audio controller (i can't hear
sound from my media player either.)
it seems that the controller and adapter are two different things - the
ethernet adapter is above the ethernet controller in the device mgr, but only
the controller has a yellow question mark (shown as under 'other devices.')
along with the audio and video controller. i understand that an ethernet
controller has two other names: a "network card" and a "internet card." so
armed with this information, and to try to bypass this issue, i was told to
get a pci ethernet adapter and install it. it did and it did not work. this
attempt was made only after i downloaded and installed drivers for the
controller, and motherboard - which did not solve the problem either.
i run xp (sp2) via a msi rs480m2 series motherboard (model #7093) and got
the drive from the msi site, along with the realtek ac'97 driver (and a lan
10/100 driver). i have a realtek alc658c audio controller/card that it is
built in to the motherboard. more info about my system - according to belarc:
network drives - none detected, communications - realtek rtl8139/810x family
fast ethernet nic (that i am NOT having problems with) and my soundcard is a
creative sb x-fi.
i also downloaded the ac'97 audio codecs (and hd codexes) from the realtek
site, installed them to no effect.
so why am i getting the yellow marks in my device mgr and how can i correct
this issue? i believe i have downloaded the correct drives for both the
mainboard and the realtek ethernet controller, but outside verification would
be useful - as well as other suggestions on what to do. jeez - i just want to
connect to the internet again.... (and hear audio on my media player).... all
this trouble came about after i ran malwarebytes and deleted crap off my
system.
(oh, and thanks for your help.)
ps: since the missing ethernet drive is ALSO grouped with a missing audio
and video driver, i am assuming that they are all related to each other,
since they ALL are under 'other devices' in the device mgr.

- MS word issue
-
i have a couple of issues, so i will address the other on another thread.
i recently had to do a data recovery, among which were many .doc files
(office2000). having them back in my system (xp, 32k), i notice that when i
roll the cursor over the file names, i see the various mb file sizes - and
all that looks 'normal.' HOWEVER when i actually click to open these various
documents, i get an error message regarding the converter mswrd632.
i looked up this error and performed the deletion of the registry key
concerning wordpad6 (i actually exported it to my desktop in case i need it).
i now no longer get the error message, but when the recovered word document
opens, is full of garbled letters, symbols and whatnot. in a word: unusable.
this problem only exists on the recovered documents - not newly created/save
docs. and in case you were curious - these recovered docs, were not
originally infected -and, as i already mentioned, appear to have the correct
mb size.
how do i make these recovered word docs 'normal'? i had the idea that if i
uninstalled my office 200 suite and then reinstalled it - this might do the
trick. but i don't know. Any other suggestions?

-
I am using Windows XP Home edition and I have a Sprint USB Broadband Card,
and I am wondering if anyone here would know how I could setup windows so
that if this broadband card should drop its connection for any reason,
windows would automatically restart the broadband cards program or drivers

this done on computers at work with a program where if you close it down it
will immediatly open the program back up again, but i dont know how they are
doing it. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to go about

- XPM (Windows 7 - Windows Virtual PC) vs VmWare & other Platform
-
Hi,
I am exploring Windows Virtual PC
along with XPM(Windows XP mode)
in Windows 7.
The XPM is a virtual machine package
for Windows Virtual PC. It allows
Windows XP apps to run in a virtual
environment alongside the Windows 7
apps in same desktop. The concept
of using the same desktop sounds
very interesting & good !!
XP Mode enables the ability to run many
older Windows XP business and
other applications . But what about the
earlier versions support ? I wonder the
need for XPM in Windows 7 that too
specifically w.r.t XP ?
XP Mode applications run in a
Terminal Services session in the
virtualized Windows XP, and are
accessed via Remote Desktop Protocol
by a client running on the Windows 7 host.
Is XPM just to demonstrate the usage
of same desktop for virtualization ?
Will XPM good for high end games in XP ?
How is it be rated against Vmware and
other virtualization technologies ?
How is it rated against VirtualBox ?
Will it support linux in the future upgrades ?
Any ideas ?
Thx in advans,

- restore SD card capacity
-
I have 16GB microSd card that I just received and after I formatted it on XP,
it only says it has a capacity of 961MB. When I put it into my phone, it is
also shows as 961MB.
I then went into the disk management tool in the control panel and found my
disk. The disk still showed up as having a 16GB capacity. So, I figured I
could format it from here. Instead, it changed the capacity to also read
16GB.
I found a tool that seemed to wipe the card clean (called diskerase from
these forums). But, it's still at 961MB. I'm out of ideas now. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

- Missing Local Settings Folder
-
I recently installed the OEM version of XP Pro, and it seems just fine;
however, I found an oddity.
The app I'm running should have a folder like:
C:\Documents and Settings\joe\Local Settings\Application
Data\WSentinel\config.txt
But it has no such path, except for C:\Documents and Settings\joe\
I only have a few apps installed at this point. SeaMonkey browser, Paint
Shop Pro, and some accurate time apps, which are very small.
Comments?

- Restore
-
I am not able to "restore" to an earlier date no matter what date I select or
whether I restore in "sagfe" mode or not. Neither way works.

- OT: Reliable Medium For Long Term Backup And Archiving
-
Hi,
I've been using DVD and CDs for long term backup and archiving.
However, recent uploading of a hundred or so CDs and DVDs had
several that failed. These were only about six years old. (I
typically spot test a newly burned disk.) More than one burner
and brand of blanks was involved. The burners and blanks are
garden variety.
What are more reliable alternatives?
Thanks,
Gary
