- Help files for installing SP3
-
Since there have been lots of things learned about installing SP3, can
someone *point me to*
(1) the best information for getting ready for the install.
(2) information to follow when things don't go right.
Not sure if I have the correct Microsoft instructions (getting ready to
install) (what not to do) (how to get out of a jam) etc.
I could be described as a power user of software apps, but I'm not familiar
with hardware-drivers, etc. I may have to do my own install.

- Using wide and regular format monitors
-
Hello All
My job just gave me new Lenovo T400 laptop running XP. (No Windows 7 yet
for us)
It has a 14 inch wide format screen. I'm attaching the computer to a
traditional 20 inch screen. The wide display on the laptop 1280 x 800 is
squished and off the screen on the traditional montior. When I open display
properties, it shows both montiors as Monitor 1.
I'd like to have the traditional monitor work property without having to
resize the display resolution every time I connect to it. (I do NOT want to
use one monitor as an extension of my desktop). Is there a way to have two
different reoltuiosn - one to accommodate the laptop display and the other
my traditional 20-inch display? If I try to activate monitor 2 in the
display settings or even drag, it wants to extend my desktop. What, if
anything, am I missing here?
Thanks for any help.

- Print Spooling vs suspend
-
A few days ago we took one of our printers off the network and to a
repair shop. Later we noticed that one of our computers no longer
dropped to sleep (S3 mode). I've spent a few days trying to figure out
why and repair the problem. The computer owner suddenly recalled trying
to print something after the printer was removed from the network so the
print job was in the spool. The print job was deleted and the computer
went to sleep! I'm sending this note for two reasons:
1) In case someone else out there is tracking down a sleep problem -
It's tricky since the printer icon can disappear from the task bar
removing hints about the source of the problem
2) To ask a question based on my memory: MEMORY = (I think that MS
required software to work and play well with sleep modes in order to be
XP certified.) QUESTION = (If memory is correct wouldn't the XP spooler
fail to be XP certified if someone other than MS wrote it?)
Tongue firmly in cheek on 2 above.

- XP SP3 desktop using excessive memory
-
I have a Dell Inspiron desktop, XP SP3 has been running great, then my user
called me, said the system is very slow.
I went to task manager and saw they were using double the physical memory
they have, I checked processes --- nothing is using excessive memory.
When the user went to lunch I ran performace tests to see if paging
problems, memory leaks --- the system is free from viruses, I got the
following ---
memory\available bytes - using 100%
memory\pages/sec - using 100%
memory\pool nonpaged bytes - using 100%
memory\pool\nonpaged allocs - using 100%
I powered off the system, back on, memory usage way down to normal, I opened
the software they use - one at a time, waiting a few minutes before opening
more, wait a few minutes in between - I would not use that much memory. As
the machine is running a few hours, then all of the physical memory is used.
Anyone have any suggestions ? my thought was wipe/re-install windows.
Thanks,
Bob

- Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
-
Hi! 4 Feb 2010
One of my machines has a problem with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer on XP
SP2:
If a .TIF file is double clicked, the Fax Viewer opens the file, but takes
very long. When the print option is selected, it starts listing (I think) all
the files on the disk: 13690 files in this case. It takes about 30 minutes
(Core2Duo 1.8).
I do not find any options in WPFV to set any defaults. Possibly, some other
application is being called to print the viewed file.
I changed the default for .tif to PhotoEditor: but is there is any way I can
use WPFV to print: It has some useful layout options.
Thanks

- XP to Windows 7
-
I have a Dell Inspiron 530, Intel dual 2.2 CPU computer running XP/Sp3/IE8
with all updates. It has 3 identical, 320G SATA HDs, all cloned to the same
software, and 2 gigs of memory. The three HDs are located in the two
internal positions and one external enclosure. I have been given a gift of
a legal Windows 7 disk and wish to install W7 on one of the drives. My
questions:
If I install W7 on one of the HDs, I realize that the XP (and everything
else) on that HD is gone and I have no problem with that as I will still
have two fully operational XP systems and all my apps on the two other HDs.
But will I still be able to boot up to these XP drives or will the
installation of W7 change my BIOS settings or some other change that will
prevent me from doing this. What I really want to accomplish is to get W7
up and running on one of my HDs but still be able to re-boot into one of my
2 remaining XP drives. In other words, a triple boot, one W7 system and two
XP systems.
Why would I want to do this? Well, my XP/IE8 works beautifully and I don't
want to do anything to screw it up but I realize I'll have to switch to W7
eventually. The ideal situation for me would be to retain the XP capability
on one HD, with another HD containing the clone of the first one for a back
up, and the third HD with W7 as a learning tool to get comfortable with W7.
Any problem with doing this?

- Permanently change process priority?
-
I am attempting to permanently change process priorities for certain
apps on XP sp3 so that when I start them they start with a custom
priority of my choosing rather than with the default priority of
'Normal' assigned by XP.
I have tried both Prio and SetPriority, but neither app will permanently
assign process priorities. When the app which is assigned a priority
other than the default is closed and reopened, it reopens with the
default priority of Normal rather than with the one of my choosing.
I have .NET 2.0 installed, which is needed for SetPriority.
Can anyone shed any light on why these apps might not be working? Would
any particular service be needed to enable these process
priority-setting apps to work correctly?

- XP Undelete Utilities
-
The power flickered and a folder on an XP SP3 machine literally
disappeared. NTFS Undelete restored the files by copying them to another
folder, but all of the creation and modification dates were set to

maintaining the file names.
Is there a utility that will simply undelete the files where they sit?
It's really hard to convince myself to write over the deleted files when
I restore the folder. I don't know any way to mark the folder off limits
such that the deleted files will not be overwritten.

- Windows XP SP2 and Copy/Paste Stops Functioning
-
We recently migrated all of our machines to Windows XP SP2 (windows-only
environment) from having a novell client environment.
One thing we have noticed, and just for the record we have Windows XP SP2
before on some machines, but not all, so when people are doing a lot of
copying and pasting, the paste function stops working. We have received
several TIDs including people using MSTSC, but the majority of people are
seeing the issue on their normal machine (same machine as before, doing the
same thing) and the paste is indeed hosed. They reboot and all would be good
for a little while.
We found a hotfix, loaded that and it still does not seem to make a
difference. We have Dell machines wil 1 or 2 G of memory. Several people
have reported using other tools at the same time for example SQL Server Mgmt
Studio 2005, AD MMC console with Outlook and Word open. It is all over the
board.
It almost appears to us that there is a memory leak. Is there a utility or
something we can load to figure out what might be causing this. Or perhaps,
the 50 others I see having the issue on google, what type of fix they put in
place. Rebooting several times a day is not an option for people and we will
not be going to Windows XP Sp3 soon.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

- Safe Mode Logon Password Keying Problem
-
I'd be grateful for some help with a problem which
has developed on my desktop system which runs XP MCE
2005 with all critical updates and has a cordless
keyboard and mouse from Logitech. Unfortunately I
don't know when the problem first occurred so I
can't associate it with any particular circumstance.
When attempting to logon to a password protected
account in safe mode via either the welcome screen
or the classic logon prompt the cursor duly appears
but key depressions have no effect when an attempt
is made to enter the password. The mouse works
normally. If the password is removed from the
account to be accessed a safe mode logon proceeds
normally, though of course no password needs to be
keyed. Having logged on successfully the keyboard
functions normally within safe mode. There are no
keyboard or logon problems in normal mode.
Nothing apparently relevant appears in the event
logs and device manager shows no problems in normal
or safe mode. msinfo32 lists one problem device,
a PS/2 keyboard, but under error code correctly
states that the device is not present or has no
drivers installed. Device manager doesn't list a
PS/2 keyboard.

I am planning on installing a larger HDD in my Dell Inspiron 5160 Laptop.
I have an image of the current HDD that includes the 2 installed partitions
from Dell (Diagnostics and the PC Restore Partition. The image was created

I have used the image to re-install the C Drive several times but was
wondering if the other 2 partitions would be able to be installed on the new
HDD from the image program so I would still have the ability to use the PC
RESTORE function from DELL.
One partition is FAT, one Partition is FAT 32 and the C drive is NTFS
If I can't and only can restore the C drive, would the boot.ini have to be
reconfigured?
The current boot.ini is:

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP

A friend of mine has a laptop that has suddenly started the old "Stop:
c000021a {Fatal System Error}. The Windows Logon Process system terminated
unexpectedly with a status of f 0xc0000135 (0x00000000 0x00000000). The
system has shut down.
Using BartPE I've managed to run Dr Watson as per here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/156669
The problem is that even having done that it will NOT boot at all past this
error so I can't look at the Dr Watson log!
It does the same in Safe Mode and Last known good configuration.
I'm now currently searching (using a Linux Live CD) for "winlogon" to see if
that's corrupted, but it's not finding anything.
The situation is complicated by the fact that the Windows XP Home CD from
which this has been installed has gone missing in a move, and I only have XP
Pro CDs.
Is there anyway I can repair an XP Home installation using an XP Pro CD?

Quite often recently, while typing messages in Gmail, I must
inadvertently hit a keyboard function combination which switches

Trouble is, I don't know what key combination I've inadvertently hit

else experienced this? Or found a keyboard combo to change it back? So
far the only way I can regularise things is to quit Gmail and start

- SFC /SCANNOW - WINDOWS FILES PROTECTION
-
Windows XP Home SP3
===============
In December 2009 I did a "clean install" using CD #3 from Dell.
Because I was having problems with My Music (Icould not play any of the
songs) I decided to run SFC /SCANNOW and getting the following messages:
"WINDOWS FILES PROTECTION
Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the
DLL cache.
Insert your Windows XP Home SP 3 now".
I inserted Dell CD #3.
And again I got another message:
"WINDOWS FILE PROTECTION
The CD you provided is the wrong CD. Please insert the Windows XP Home SP3
CD into your CD-ROM drive"
And again I for the same messages listed above.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had received from Dell, at different times, 3 CDs:
#1.-Operating System.-Reinstallation CD.-Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
including Service Pack 1
#2.-Operating System.-Already installed on your computer.-Microsoft XP Home
Edition Service Pack 2
#3.-Operating System.-Already installed on your computer.-Microsoft XP Home
Edition Service Pack 3 for Ultra Low Cost Pcs.
As I mentioned at the beginning, CD #3 was used for "clean install".
Please let me know what should I do to correct the problems.
Thank you.

- BSOD: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
-
hello...
my old machine...running XP Pro...that I sold to my friend...got a 'blue
screen of death stop error' message, titled: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
it kicks off (goes black) before I can jot anything down...& I didn't want
to mess around w/ disabling autostart...so I grabbed the utility
'BlueScreenView'.
BSV showed me the following:
STOP: 0x100000d1 (0x48422ecd, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x86203c88)
NDIS.sys - Address 0xf7698b6c base at 0xf7692000
In the main view, where it (BlueScreenView) highlights probable problem
drivers, it highlighted the following:
NDIS.sys
ntoskrnl.exe
any ideas...??? (& I'm also searching myself)
thanks again,
mark4man

- keyboard issue
-
Hi,
I have a Toshiba Equium laptop with XP Home installed. The keyboard has
suddenly gone weird. When I press the Q key it types Qaz, if I press it
again it will be Aqz and then various other variations of those letters each
time. A also types different as does many other keys. Some don't type
anything, the N seems to have turned into the insert key. Delete doesn't
work but backspace, R, T, U and others work fine. the caps lock key doesn't
work but V seems to turn caps on and off. I have reformatted the drive and
reinstalled XP. I have also gone into the Bios and reset it to defaults but
the keyboard is still exactly the same.
Any ideas what it might be?
Cheers
Lenny

nothing happen on my PC.
TaskManager don't even show a new task opening and closing....
using the command url file://serveurname/location/name.jpg or /
name.pdf
on every other network PC in the office it open the file using the
default application picture viewer or Acrobat reader.
On my PC it's doesn't (but was 3 week's ago!)
Win XP SP3, no new installation, or removal, it stop working. (maybe
FireFox update ?!?!)
I used many registry fixer, still not working.
File association is OK because double click on any file open in the
application.
downloaded file and replace url.dll and urlmon.dll
Problem is not in HKEY_Local_User because under another user same
problem
same for HKEY_classes_root, I compare with other PC and url and file
have the same setup.
the command mailto: and callto: are working....
Any ideas ??
Thank you

- Num Lock on Keyboard
-
New problem just started and don't know why. When I boot up my PC, the "num
lock" light was always automatically on, allowing me to use the numeric keys.
It wont come on automatically any more. I have to turn it on manually evry
time I boot up the PC. What has caused this change and how can I get it back
to what it used to do. Thank you.

- control of external drive?
-
(XP Pro)
I have Process Explorer, which tells me a lot about what is happening on the
C: drive, but I find that external USB drives (MyBook 500gigs) are tending
to hang, and I cannot see how to find out what programme is causing it. Any
ideas how to tell what external drives are doing?
Cheers,
S

- XP Forgets Display Settings After Restart
-
Hi,
I have dual displays at my computer and it has recently started "forgetting"
the display settings after I restart. Upon restarting once, only one monitor
will come up with a signal and I can't get it to output to the other monitor.
If I restart a second time, both monitors will have a signal but it has the
wrong montior set up as the primary monitor. What is supposed to be my second
monitor (the one w/ my desktop extended onto it) has my desktop icons and an
extra toolbar that I use. It's also oriented on the wrong side of what is
supposed to be my primary monitor. What's supposed to be the primary monitor,
still has the taskbar on it for some reason.
It's pretty annoying to have to reset all this every time I restart. Is
there some registry value I can set or clear to fix this?

- Stop Error on restart.
-
Hi all,
I am presently getting this message whenever I reboot:
Stop: c000021a {fatal system error}
The windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a
status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.
I am running XP Home SP3, RAM 1.5 GHz , CPU 864 MHz and recently installed a
new Belkin wireless G Adapter ( I have the most up-to-date drivers from the
Belkin website). It appears to be working fine, but the problem started
since its installation.
Anybody know what this might be.
Thanks in advance.
