- Slipstreaming Problem
-
Hi
In the past I have sucessfully slipstreamed windows xp home from the
original cd to SP2 and it all works OK. However I have just slipstreamed
from the original cd to SP3 and when I use it to reinstall XP it starts up
as you expect, loads the usuall instaltion files and goes to reboot.
Leaving the cd in the drive it just goes around and does it all again. Take
the cd out at this stage it asks for the cd and continues as you would
expect. Whats going on? Another question is do you have to slipstream in
stages? For example from the original cd to SP2 to SP3 or original cd
straight to SP3. I have read a lot on net but its not clear. I do hope
someone can help.

My Acer Netbook XP Pro has slowed a lot since I started using it. I cleaned
up the files, then did a defrag. Since the disk is hardly used - maybe 15
% - it finished quickly with excellent results. I wonder if my Avast and
some memory resident piece of AdAware are fighting? Or some other CPU
stealing process is at work? How an I tell? TIA, Paul

- Lowering McAfee's priority to "below normal' on XP problematic
-
Hi,
I tried lowering McAfee's priority to "below normal" because it
frequently slows my XP machine to a crawl. When I tried it, I got a
warning that such action might make Windows unstable. When I clicked
something like "Do it, regardless", it seemed to fail.
1. Would reducing McAfee's priority really make my machine unstable?
2. If it's not really going to caused instability, how can I reduce
it's priority.
TIA,
Richard

- Can't Access ATT Account Manager
-
I've had ATT local and long distance service for a long time, and used their
account manager at https://accountmanager.att.com to log in and check phone
bills. Last week, I upgraded my Internet service from Hughes satellite to
ATT wireless for my Windows XP Desktop. The USBConnect Lightning device
provides consistently good speeds, since we have a 3G tower about 1/2 mile
from our home. However, since ATT got my wireless account set up, I can no
longer get to any ATT pages except www.wireless.att.com. If I try to go to
www.att.com, or links from that page, the pages don't fully load.
I thought this was an ATT issue, but was able to log in from another
computer. I made the following changes and checks, but have not been able
to log into the account manager from my computer for a week.
* Ran check for malware with MSE (been using it for several months, and
really like it). Also ran checks with SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes in
normal mode, plus Malwarebytes in safe mode - no problems found.
* Could not access the account manager from either IE 8.0 or Firefox
browsers (with, or without add-ons).
* Added https://accountmanager.att.com as a Trusted site in IE 8.0, but no
joy.
* Deleted all cookies and temp files from IE 8.0. Deleted temp files by
search for *.tmp. Deleted temp files by Run %temp% - No improvement.
* Changed IE 8.0 Internet zone from medium-high level (my typical setting)
to medium - still no go.
* Used Microsoft Fix it 50267 to restore the Hosts file - again no good.
* Checked my firewall (Windows Firewall) settings and have no entries for
ATT.
I thought maybe a password reset would help, but don't see that as a
solution since I could log in from another computer. How can I fix this
problem?

- XP security - 3rd Party server
-
Hi there!
Hope this is the right place for this question (concern).
Couldn't find any matching concern Googling.
XP SP3 & latest updates.
I got my hands on a 14 day free trial "playon" media server
by "MediaMall" that is supposed to transcode real time al
types of media from my PC to my DLNA HD TV set.
I have all my important and personal files in this PC (i.e. finances).
The only way "playon" will perform is to be given full internet server
access from my firewall (zonealarm).
Concerned if this is safe? Can this software be written in a way to copy
my other files (other than video or pictures) to some internet web page
without my knowledge?
I mean if this app can go through my folders and find all media files
and make a library, and transcode & transmit them via LAN, why
couldn't it do it via WAN the other files?
I am asking because I just don't know!
Thanks in advance!

- Uninstall win7 RC1 64 bit
-
I installed Windows 7 RC 64 bit to dual boot with my Windows XP Pro 32 bit.
I now want to uninstall Win 7 64 bit as it will be moot in a couple of
months.
I was told to use the Win 7 install disc and in XP type "x\boot\bootsect.exe
/nt52 ALL /force." I kept getting a note that \boot\bootsect.exe is not a
Win32 application. I then realized that my 32 bit XP could not run 64 bit
applications.
Can someone tell me how to get rid of the Win 7 RC and keep my XP?
Thanks.
BTW I do have Windows 7 on another computer.

-
Although we have System Restore turned off on all drives, restore points are
still being created on the secondary partitions.
The OS partiton is drive C, NTFS. The secondary partition is drive D, FAT32.
The restore points are being created when applications (i.e. DirectX,
WinDVD, etc.) are installed from the second partition (drive D). We must
install these from a secondary partition.
What are we missing? These restore points are filling up our drives.
Also, I thought System Restore wouldn't work on FAT32 drives?

She can get on MSN, Google, and Yahoo.
This message comes up under IE and Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.
She has the latest version of Norton 360 Premium and the scans removed a

Oh, and she's got a shortcut to Farm Town (a FB game) that works. She can't

download to many at one time. Since a reboot was required I did that. I chose
early version of Windows from boot up menu and was taken to safe mode screen.
Chose normal startup, Win XP startup screen briefly appears and then reboots.
If I choose Win7 from boot menu, Win 7 starts normally. No matter what I try
to get into Win XP it goes into reboot and Safe Mode. How do I get back into

I guess my question, is there something the install application or an

- chkdsk boot loop
-
Working on an XP Pro computer and this has got me stumped.
Computer boots to chkdsk, chkdsk completes, the system reboots before
displaying the welcome screen. This process just repeats, sometimes in
between it will ask to boot into safe mode, etc, but not every time.
When I attempt to boot into safe mode (any type) it hangs after loading
mup.sys and just cranks the hard drive.
I booted into the recovery console and ran chkdsk /r from there and it
completed fine with no errors, rebooted and that didn't help.
I've repaired the mbr and the boot config.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get chkdsk to complete, so the "dirty
bit" gets set and I can get out of this loop? I cant manually set query the
status of the dirty bit because fsutil doesn't seem to work from the
recovery console at all.
Any help would be appreciated, I REALLY REALLY don't want to have to format
this machine.
Thanks,

- Cranky folders on external hard drive
-
I believe this problem is related to Windows (or my fingers), not to
anything inherent in the external HD mentioned below. Hopefully, this
is the correct group for this question:
I have two computers running Windows XP Pro w/SP3, and a Seagate
external HD which normally resides on the desktop machine. Beginning a
month ago, I needed to work remotely, so I'd copy a couple of data
folders from desktop to the external HD, and then plug that into the
laptop to transfer the files. This worked for 3 weeks.* But this past
weekend, I used the laptop to create a new folder on the external HD,
added some files, and when I moved the external HD to the desktop to
grab the files, I was greeted with a msg saying "E:\foldername is not
accessible. Access is denied.".
I was curious, so I did the reverse: Working on the desktop, created a
new folder on the external HD, added a few files, and then plugged the
external HD into the laptop. Same problem.
Any clues would be appreciated. I *think* I found one at the Microsoft
web site, but I'm not sure. It suggests that I turn OFF simple file
sharing on the desktop and take ownership of the stubborn folder.
There are two reasons I haven't tried this yet: First, downtime on the
desktop is not an option - it's used for work, and I don't know the
other ramifications of disabling simple file sharing. Second, simple
file sharing is already OFF at the laptop, and it's having the same
problem with folders created by the desktop. So, why would it help on
the desktop?
Help!
* The laptop was nowhere near the desktop machine, or I would've
networked the two rather than use the external HD as the intermediary.
They've since been networked (through my Linksys router), but that
won't always be the case, so I need to solve this problem.

The windows subsystem system process terminated unexpectedly with a status
of 0xc0000005 (0x7c9106c3 0x0055f36c).
Begininning dump of physical memory.
I have uninstalled AVG, also taken out the graphics card and uninstalled all
the drivers for it. I have also changed the RAM. I have also done a chkdsk.
Earlier on it wouldn't even get to the startup screen before I got a blue
screen so I have done a repair install of windows using the original disk.

- Wireless networked xp does not autoconnect at startup
-
Hi
I have just added an Advent computer running Xp to my Home computer wireless
network but it will not autoconnect to internet when I start up the XP
computer.
My wireless router is Belkin & needs the WEP security code. I had to
reformat this XP computer & after doing this & setting up XP on it and
connecting it to my Vista home network it will not autoconnect at startup. At
start up IE browser says 'cannot connect to the internet- you appear to be
connected to the internet but may have to reconnect'!
I have used the setup wizard and checked the box on wireless properties to
allow Windows to control the wireless network (so disabling Belkin control)
and on the Belkin software to allow Windows control.
This XP machine was my main computer 2 years ago until it crashed and I
bought a new Acer computer running Vista Home Premium. Now I have 'revived'
my old Advent computer by reformatting & adding it to my Vista network but I
am frustrated that when I turn on the Advent XP machine I have to manually
connect to the wireless internet!
I have followed all sorts of guides on the internet & remember that 2 years
ago when I had the wireless network on thevAdvent XP computer before it
crashed I had this same issue & I fixed it with some advice from an internet
guide which I no longer have.
None of the advice I have followed has worked and I do not understand why
this is not working correctly! This small problem is quite frustrating &
annoying.
Can someone please patiently help & guide me to get this wireless network
correctly
set up?
I am most grateful for helpful advice, and look forward to replies, many

- How to circumvent Access Denied?
-
We have a small home network with, at present, 4 Win XP computers and 1
Vista computer (although the Vista machine can be ignored for this
query). I've had to do quite a bit of rearranging of folders/files
recently, and I'm getting increasingly frustrated with Microsoft's
insistence on denying access to some Documents and Settings subfolders
and some Windows subfolders.
Each computer has one user only and that user is the Owner. What can be
done to provide EACH user with full access to ALL folders and files on
ALL computers, using My Computer or Windows Explorer or ZTreeWin or
whatever? I know MS thinks it is protecting us from ourselves, but
there must be some people (like me) who have legitimate reasons for
needing access and are prepared to accept any risks involved.

- File Synchronization - Synchronizes UNCHANGED Files
-
So that I have my documents with me at all times and so that "My Documents"
are the same on both my home desktop and my laptop, I set my "My Documents"
address on my laptop to my "My Documents" folder on the desktop and set the
files to be made available offline.
As with all offline shared file synchronization processes, when I
synchronize my files, the system scans all files of both computers for any
changes or new files, and if and only if there are any, it synchronizes those
changes or new files.
For some odd reason, I have a handful or so of media files that go through a
full synchronization process if Windows Media Player is ever used while the
two computers are not connected. It doesn't matter if I have played or made
changes to that particular file or not; just if Windows Media Player was used
on either computer while the laptop was offline. So, somehow, Windows Media
Player makes minor changes to these particular media files when it is opened
Why does this happen and how can I stop it from continuing?

- Running Windows XP on a MacBook
-
Hello,
I will soon be getting my Refurbished MacBook which will be able to run
Windows XP. I plan to buy the home version on ebay for a low cost. How
much do you recommend I allocate to Windows XP? I was planning on giving
XP 30GB's but not sure if that can be changed once allocated. I do not
have much to run in Windows, however most apps work only on Windows, and
some job websites or online applications will not work in a mac browser
so it would be helpful to have Windows. (Although I have a job, I would
like a higher paying job and it frustrates me going to company job
applications that work only in Windows). For most of my day to day work
I will be using Snow Leopard. Also another advantage of XP is the much
superior BlackBerry desktop Manager.
For the time being I will be booting into Windows and eventually may run
them side by side, but this will require more RAM and I think Windows
may not work as well in such an environment, although I do not know.
Also can someone tell me if Windows hardware will work on my MacBook? I
may want to get a USB to serial adaptor for some hardware and eventually
dump my old 1999 Compaq Windows 98 laptop, but may keep it for the old
hardware. I have a GPS and a Jornada 720 which I use to connect t the
Compaq via Serial. Will it work in Windows XP on the Macbook?
Also where will the XP files be stored? Can I use XP to access the Mac
files and vice versa in the boot camp mode? May install Office 2003 on
MacBook (as its much nicer than the Macs Office and Outlook beats
Entourage for most uses.
Thanks for your help.

- USB troubles
-
If I leave anything USB connected to one of our computers running XP for
longer than a few minutes, the computer locks hard, requiring a hardware
restart. The USB devices work fine in other computers. Googling the
problem returns lots of hits, but no answers. Anybody else have this?

- XP-SP3 How can I be sure to keep it.
-
I currently have a Dell Reinstallation CD for XP Pro - SP2. I recently had
to use it and was able to reinstall Windows without any problems. After
installation I used the Windows Update site to get all the current updates.
I believe I've read here that after July, 2010 SP2 will no longer be
supported. If I have use my OEM disk after July will I still be able to
download Service Pack 3 from Windows Update? or should I go ahead and
download the iso file from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2FCDE6CE-B5FB-4488-8C50-FE22559D164E&displaylang=en
and copy it to a CD. I assume if I do this then I would be able to use the
copied iso file to update directly to SP3 without going thru the Windows
Update site - correct?

- Re-enable Welcome Screen after disabling
-
I hated waiting, so changed my User Accounts and unchecked the Welcome Screen
(& switch user) boxes. Now when I boot up, it loads fast....but I've
completely lost my sound. I've tried troubleshooting which shows all working,
but it doesn't. So I tried to re-do the welcome. Changed user accounts back
to checked boxes. I still do not get welcome screen, but now I can logoff and
switch user and when I switch user, I get all my sound again, windows noises,
music, skype. How do I fix, either way....a)get the sound on the
administrator page or b)get my welcome screen back. I've tried to restore,
but when that restarts it says it could not restore.

- Explorer Bar-Folders
-
I'm using WinXP SP3 fully updated. When I open Windows Explorer through a
desktop shortcut, I have the folders displayed (View | Explorer Bar | check
Folders).
I've also created desktop shortcuts for Program Files and for my
datafiles--but they don't display folders on opening. I can click on Folders
to display them, but the setting doesn't hold once I exit. I tried unlocking
the toolbars and going through View | Explorer Bar | check Folders and then
relocking, but that didn't work either.
Is there a way to get the setting to hold?
Thank you!

- Routing With 2 NICs
-
Hi,
I have a problem with a slightly old set up, but I want to find a
solution....have an XP Pro box, SP3, with two network cards.
Card 1: this is my internet bound connection and has a public address on a
255.255.255.248 subnect. The gateway is a Cisco router and this connected to
the internet without issues.
Card 2: this is an internal private address and is connect to another
internal network - just configured with IP address and subnet - no gateway.
I have installed nating on the NICs, card 1 being public (full) and 2 being
private. My network connecting on card 2 can get out on the internet by
specifying the card 1 address as the DNS server and gateway (have a DNS
service running). Nating was configured using the netsh command.
My problem is that I need to add a second address to the first card, this
will be a 192.168.0.0 /24 address. Doing this cuts the connection from the
network on card 2. Is this possible? I want to add this second 192.168.0.0
network on that switch on that card 1.
I am thinking that maybe this is not going to work and I need a third NIC in
this box. I know this sounds a bit backward....there is a reason for it
though.
Thanks
Jim

- Laptop, charging battery
-
When power on the new laptop the first time, should I completely charge the
battery? Should i leave the laptop powered in all night while the battery
be fully charged?
I got new laptop, and the battery has already been inserted. That's strange,
as usually battery packed separately. How to make sure that the battery is
OK?

- Turn on went into system recovery
-
I have XP home edition and a HP pc a350n, I know nothing and won't prtend to.
My wife turned on the computer, I don't know what she did but it went into
System recovery. It wouldn't allow me to go into safe mode only f-1 or f-10.
I ran the recovery, it look like alot of our downloads are still here but
sysetm isn't running correct. My question is there is a box " hardware
installation acpi multiprocessor pc, The sofware you are about to install has
not passed windows logo testing to verify its campatilibilty with windows xp,
and more warnigs. It has 2 buttons continue anyway or stop installation.
Which do I click on? also any ino on what else I'll need to do after system
recovery I would surely appreciate. I tried to do a restore point but no luck
except to point after system recovery. Man what a stinking mess. Thanks for
any and all help.

- Admin's Documents are blocked for change on level 1 on my server
-
I have a 500GB disk in a DNS-313 (D-link) NAS.
2 levels below root I have all my private files in the folder "Admin's
Documents" instead of in the system partition---Docs and settings. (The user
account is Admin)
This NAS is on my private Ethernet.
I can access and read all docs and folders OK. But when I try to delete or
create folders direct under Admin's Documents I get message " Unable to
delete/ create the folder Access denied". The same if I try to change any
doc:s there.
But if I go to the level 2 (and 3,4---)under Admin's Doc. there is no
problems to work normal.
If I now detach the server from my network and connect the built i disk
directly with USB everything works OK.
I have looked in folders properties the Read-only box is half filled (not
ticked), to clear it doesn't work.
If anyone has a hint on what is wrong I would be grateful.
Regards
