- Re-enable Welcome Screen after disabling

I hated waiting, so changed my User Accounts and unchecked the Welcome Screen
(& switch user) boxes. Now when I boot up, it loads fast....but I've
completely lost my sound. I've tried troubleshooting which shows all working,
but it doesn't. So I tried to re-do the welcome. Changed user accounts back
to checked boxes. I still do not get welcome screen, but now I can logoff and
switch user and when I switch user, I get all my sound again, windows noises,
music, skype. How do I fix, either way....a)get the sound on the
administrator page or b)get my welcome screen back. I've tried to restore,
but when that restarts it says it could not restore.

- Explorer Bar-Folders

I'm using WinXP SP3 fully updated. When I open Windows Explorer through a
desktop shortcut, I have the folders displayed (View | Explorer Bar | check
Folders).
I've also created desktop shortcuts for Program Files and for my
datafiles--but they don't display folders on opening. I can click on Folders
to display them, but the setting doesn't hold once I exit. I tried unlocking
the toolbars and going through View | Explorer Bar | check Folders and then
relocking, but that didn't work either.
Is there a way to get the setting to hold?

Hi,
I have a problem with a slightly old set up, but I want to find a
solution....have an XP Pro box, SP3, with two network cards.
Card 1: this is my internet bound connection and has a public address on a
255.255.255.248 subnect. The gateway is a Cisco router and this connected to
the internet without issues.
Card 2: this is an internal private address and is connect to another
internal network - just configured with IP address and subnet - no gateway.
I have installed nating on the NICs, card 1 being public (full) and 2 being
private. My network connecting on card 2 can get out on the internet by
specifying the card 1 address as the DNS server and gateway (have a DNS
service running). Nating was configured using the netsh command.
My problem is that I need to add a second address to the first card, this
will be a 192.168.0.0 /24 address. Doing this cuts the connection from the
network on card 2. Is this possible? I want to add this second 192.168.0.0
network on that switch on that card 1.
I am thinking that maybe this is not going to work and I need a third NIC in
this box. I know this sounds a bit backward....there is a reason for it
though.

When power on the new laptop the first time, should I completely charge the
battery? Should i leave the laptop powered in all night while the battery
be fully charged?
I got new laptop, and the battery has already been inserted. That's strange,
as usually battery packed separately. How to make sure that the battery is
OK?

I have XP home edition and a HP pc a350n, I know nothing and won't prtend to.
My wife turned on the computer, I don't know what she did but it went into
System recovery. It wouldn't allow me to go into safe mode only f-1 or f-10.
I ran the recovery, it look like alot of our downloads are still here but
sysetm isn't running correct. My question is there is a box " hardware
installation acpi multiprocessor pc, The sofware you are about to install has
not passed windows logo testing to verify its campatilibilty with windows xp,
and more warnigs. It has 2 buttons continue anyway or stop installation.
Which do I click on? also any ino on what else I'll need to do after system
recovery I would surely appreciate. I tried to do a restore point but no luck
except to point after system recovery. Man what a stinking mess. Thanks for
any and all help.

- Admin's Documents are blocked for change on level 1 on my server

I have a 500GB disk in a DNS-313 (D-link) NAS.
2 levels below root I have all my private files in the folder "Admin's
Documents" instead of in the system partition---Docs and settings. (The user
account is Admin)
This NAS is on my private Ethernet.
I can access and read all docs and folders OK. But when I try to delete or
create folders direct under Admin's Documents I get message " Unable to
delete/ create the folder Access denied". The same if I try to change any
doc:s there.
But if I go to the level 2 (and 3,4---)under Admin's Doc. there is no
problems to work normal.
If I now detach the server from my network and connect the built i disk
directly with USB everything works OK.
I have looked in folders properties the Read-only box is half filled (not
ticked), to clear it doesn't work.
If anyone has a hint on what is wrong I would be grateful.

I have strange problem with windows search engine... i have 100000 txt
files and im looking for special phrase in few txt files i know that phrase
exist but windows search give me no information - can`t find. But on the
other computer on the same phrase and same files works good. I have
reinstall windows search ... but problem still exist... how can i resolve

I have a USB 2.0 HD enclosure with a 100 GB HD. I can plug the HD into a
Windows 7 machine and the HD is displayed properly in windows explorer.
However in windows XP the device is recognized and listed by the hardware
manager, but windows XP can not see the HD. What should I check in WinXP SP3
to see why the USB HD is not being mounted in windows? BTW, the HD is
formatted in NTFS format.

I was given a DVD(+RW) made for us that we watched using a hardware DVD
player, and we're unable to open the DVD in Windows XP. Explorer is very
slow to respond, and eventually (after several minutes) shows only a blank
window.
The person that recorded the DVD from a digital camera download says that he
used Windows Vista to create the DVD.
What kind of filesystem might this be? UDF? Compressed UDF? ISO9660? Might
the owner have accidentally included some sort of copy protection that
precludes viewing the directory structure?
The DVD won't even play in XP, although it plays on a normal hardware DVD
player with output to a television screen.
Maybe the DVD+RW wasn't "closed" after writing, or some such thing?

Something is causing the arrow on some of the shortcuts to change to ">>",
with a blue background.
XP Pro & OF2K2 with all updates.
This is a recent install with only software for scanner, Adobe reader 9, and
anti virus. I've had far more software prior to the clean install, which
this time is NTFS. The AR9 and antivirus are newer than previous install.
I've tried setting the icon cache, deleted iconcache.db for user, without
success.
I'd appreciate some help. Thanks.

I suspect it's a virus existing locally because the headers make no sense
and SpamCop agrees that the header is incomplete/missing.
Resident Avast has never complained and online scanning by both McCaffee and
another found nothing.
It's a mystery.

Hi,
I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RZ 34G desktop. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition
SP3, with automatic updates turned on. Sony DVD RW DW-U12Aa drive. I have
Corel Video Studio DVD burning software installed. Everything was runnig
fine in early December (last time i used the DVD drive, I thnk).
My DVD drive is not reading DVD discs. The drive plays CDs fine. When I
put a DVD in the drive and use file explorer the F:/ comes up, but shows no
files. This does show files when a CD is in the Drive. CDs play fine in
windows media player, but when I try to play a DVD, windows media player
shows 'drive F: busyâ?? and the menu is grayed out so I can not select it from
the Play menu.
Device manager shows the device working properly. The trouble shooting
wizard did not help. I have reset the bios to default. I have run the
Windows Mr.Fixit (KB314060) and it could not resolve the problem. It said a
working DVD is â??not readable mediaâ?? and â??install CD/DVD writerâ??.
Can you provide any assistance/suggestions?

The hd died on my Dell D600. I'm buying another hd. I don't have the
reinstallation cd for the D600 but I have them for my Dell Dimension 2400
desktop unit. Can I use the Dimension 2400 xp reinstall cd & enter the xp

- chkdsk - what the heck

I wanted to check an external USB harddisk.
Via Windows Explorer - Properties - Extra, I get the message that it can't
be done because exclusive access is needed.
OK, I try another way:
In Windows: 'Start' - 'Run" I enter:
chkdsk I: /f /r
OK, this seems to work... It looks like it is going to take a looong time,
but at least I can monitor what's happening in a DOS box.
When I came back after about 10 minutes the screemsaver was active, so I
woke it up with a mouse move.
Now the DOS box has disappeared altogether, not on the task bar or anything.
I can see the drive is still running, but from now on I have no idea what's
going on (if anything) and how long I have to wait!
Why is it so hard to accomplish a simple operation??
What am I doing wrong?
I just want to see what's happening and when it's ready :-(

MS Word, Excel, Outlook, IE, etc. I am running XP Pro, SP3 and am current

HELP. my computer is an absolute mess. it takes forever to start up. i
have media center but can't listen to music or watch videos because the
computer is so slow that the sound skips. i ran superantispyware and avg and
that did not help one bit. i removed norton prior to installing avg and
removed windows defender (was told windows defender is spyware?) it seems as
though it was after playing a game on facebook that my computer slowed down
significantly.
when i open task manager i end up with 5 little green boxes in the bottom
right hand corner of computer screen. superantispyware icons showed up 4
times at the bottom right hand corner, i guess they are opening multiple
times?.
i checked msconfig and it doesn't appear as though i have anything unusual
running at start up.
could installing itunes and then removing it and then reinstalling it cause
problems? I followed instructions that i found online, used windows cleanup,
i think that was what it was called, and removed all the necessary components
(Bonjour, etc.)
I do my banking online and installed a program called Rapport console, it is
supposed to help so that key strokes can't be logged? I have disabled it to
see if that made a difference (possible conflict with firewall )and it did
not. i'm using avg for antivirus and windows firewall.

- Transfer of XP to another pc

I have just been given a pc with a better spec than my present one
(Pentium 4 dual core 3GHz instead of Athlon 2800XP, GeForce 7895 GT
instead of GeForce 7600 GS) and want to transfer my XP Pro (Full
version, not OEM, not upgrade) to the new one.
From the Microsoft website I gather that I can transfer as long as I
format the hard disk on the old machine.
I thought that I could create an image with Acronis True Image, copy
this to a usb hdd, connect this to the new machine (after installing
just a 'bare bones' XP and then install this image onto the new
machine as the OS. Then uninstall the sound driver, motherboard
drivers and graphics driver and install the new ones.
Is this reasonable ?
Am I likely to have any problems reactivating XP ?

- After running spyware - XP won't let me boot - keeps logging out

I have a dual boot XP and Win 7. I was in XP at the time.
I had recently running spybot because of a virus/spyware in my system
that caused the little RED X to appear in the start up menu and caused
my desktop background to show "YOU HAVE A VIRUS" repair immediately
and then it puts a TRIAL of some software on my desktop. Needless to
say, I didn't bother with it.
So here is what I did :
1) Ran Hijack This and took out what I could. Some things could not
be removed.
2) I rebooted and this did not fix the issue.
3) Tried restarting in safe mode, same issue.
4) Ran spybot and rebooted, this time it continues to log me off in
both safe and regular mode - it says "Loading user settings", and then
it logs me off.
Any ideas how to fix this?

- Windows Welcome Screen Login Looping Problem

Up until now no startup problems whatsoever with my system. Today, I press
the start button and it boots fine to the Windows' Welcome Screen. When I
click on my account icon (no password ever entered) it tries to login (I see
my desktop for about 4-5 seconds) but it comes back to the same Windows'
Welcome Screen after about 5-10 seconds. My significant other also has an
account icon and when she tries to login from the welcome screen she can't
get pass the screen either and gets the same 5-10 seconds looping problem
that happens to me. System specs: Dell Deminsion 3000; Windows XP Home
Edition w/Service Pack 3; 2.80 GHZ Intel Pentium 4; and 1GB DDR Memory. No
recent hardware changes made to system.

Trying to get some old W95 software (ActiveMovie) to show up in a context
menu, the "Open with ..." dialog. Typically when it's installed an entry
titled "ActiveMovie Control" will show up in the menu. At least it did until
now. I wonder if installing AFTER SP3 has anything to do with it (just did a
fresh install).
Anyway, ActiveMovie Control does show in ShellNoRoam\MUIcache but never
appears in the Open with ... selections. BTW, amovie does work (it plays
MP3's AVI's etc) but I had to manually set it up.
So why doesn't Amovie show in the openwith menu selections?

For two mornings in a row now when I turned my computer on, the system got
as far as the Welcome screen and then froze. The cursor did respond to the
mouse but aside from that nothing worked, not even Ctl-Alt_Del. I powered
off, waited, then on again and it came up perfectly normally.
Windows XP, fully updated. Is there a RAM test, and/or a disk test, to
locate intermittent problems? Or any other suggestions?

From time to time in response to the first requirement to download webpage
my IE is responsible "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". But a
second requirement is executed correctly. The same can be repeated in a row
when I call two or three webpages. After that IE starts working correctly.
(My OS - WinXP, SP3, IE v.8.)
How to fix this situation?

I used a unix utility (cygwin's tar) to copy a file tree from a hard
drive to a stick. One of the things I learned was that file links/
shortcuts contain a full path to their target rather than a relative
path. These are the files created by "Paste shortcut" or Shift-Ctrl-
Drag. After the file tree is copied to the stick, all such file links
no longer point to valid destinations.
I used a text editor like vim to look at the file shortcuts, and I can
see the full path to the target. Is there a hopefully simple way to
convert these paths to relative paths? I guess that would also depend
on whether file shortcuts can even point to targets using relative
paths.
Moreover, is there a hopefully simple way to traverse a file tree and
convert all file shortcuts to use relative paths?
Failing that, is there a simple way to replace all file shortcuts with
their target files throughout a subtree in the file hierarchy?
I am looking to do this on both Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Hi Guys,
I have an up-to-date version of windows Xp and windows live mail. My
problem is when I boot up my computer, the desktop seems to lock and I
cannot use my icons or active any program from the desktop icons, nor the
taskbar. I have my task bar on hide, as windows is loading I can hide and
bring the taskbar back, but then the taskbar disappears and the cursor
turns into the symbol to increase or decrease it's size. I have to keep
rebooting my computer 4 or 5 times until it will work properly. Any ideas
in a solution, I thought doing a repair, is this a goo idea. Your help and
advice is appreciated

I can not find the discussion group for Internet Explorer only so am posting
the problem to this discussion group. The problem that I am having is when I
open up the computer for the past two weeks a page comes up with the
following message: "Internet Explorer can not display this page". I can
click the page off and continue to work on the computer. This is rather
annoying to have it occur every time I open up the computer. I have Internet
Explorer 8. Is there any way I can correct this problem or tell me why this
is happening. It has never happened before until the past two weeks. Would

My wife's 6 year old Compaq laptop (WXP, SP3, 1 GB RAM, Windows Defender,
CCleaner, MBAM, SuperAntiSpyware, all WU's current) keeps requiring more and
more hand holding to keep it running ok. The fan is weak and sometimes
doesn't start. A few times the drive shut down due to overheating. Firefox
freezes sometimes as does WLMail and the computer will decided (whilst idle)
to either shut down or do a restart without prompting. I just had to work
on some weak-springed contacts inside of each USB port to get them to work,
but this may not be a permanent fix.
If I purchase another laptop I'd like to be able to transfer her files and
programs from the current one to the new one. In particular she has tons of
purchased games (in Real Arcade and MSN) and tons of photos and Office
files. The 60 GB hard drive has 41 Gigs used up. I'd like to somehow
transfer all or most of this to a new laptop, before the current one crashes
for good.
I've got the OS CD (WinXP, SP2) and an `Application and Driver Recovery
DVD'. I've never really backed up anything on this machine other than to put
all or most of our photos on a flash drive and copy them to my Acer Desktop.
I understand there are utilities out there that can make an image of this
drive but, frankly, I'm not really sure what that means. I know very little
about a product called Acronis but I think that's mostly for recovering an
old machine and not transferring files and programs to a new one. Not sure.
Can someone advise as to where I should start in terms of copying all my
`good stuff' to a new laptop. I haven't a clue how to do this. Or should I
just give the new computer (not purchased yet) and the old one to a local
geek who can copy all this stuff for me? Will it matter that the new laptop
might be a different OS?

- Cannot Change/Remove a Program

I have a program that doesn't quite work properly. It opens almost
everything that can be seen on the initial dialog, but the command entry
area is not functional. Per Subject, I'm getting nowhere with it.
The only way I can kill it is use Task Mgr. It's a student version of a
fairly complex program that I bought 5 years ago. As such it requires
the install CD to be in the machine.

- only one letter shows typing shortcut name

Windows XP pro SP3
This isn't really a big problem. I'm just curious about what is going
on.
Recently I notice that typing in a name (or changing a name) for
desktop shortcut does this:
The first three letters show up, then only one letter (the letter just
typed) shows as the typing continues. The field expands as the name is
typed but only one letter is visible as it is typed, until I am
finished and hit return. Then the whole name shows up.
Again, no big issue. Just curious. Any thoughts appreciated.

- computer wiped clean, now what?

my daughters laptop had something wrong with it......i'm not exactly sure.....
.when you turned it on, it made a funny sound like it kept wanting to re-
boot. we were not able to do anything with it. couldn't get on internet,
download anything, etc. we don't have the starter disk that came with the
computer to wipe it clean, so we gave laptop to a friend who did have the
starter disk for her computer. windows xp with sp2. the friend inserted the
disk and wiped computer clean for us, so it is new, like when it came from
factory. my question is this.......what do i do now? what steps do i need
to take to make sure the computer is safe before i allow my daughter to get
on internet? i know i need to add firewall and virus protection. how do i
add firewall? somebody mentioned something to me about installing a service
pack? also.......what about the drivers? are the necessary drivers re-
installed with the starter disk when the computer is cleaned?
i am not a tech head by any means, so it would help if any answers i received
were in plain English. any help i can get would be greatly appreciated.

As of two nights ago, I cannot be on the internet on my desktop (with a cable
modem) and on the internet on my laptop (wireless router) at the same time.
I do not know of any recent changes.

A friend of mine has a WD my book external hdd with back-up software
installed on it. I wish to know if the WD can be formatted clean so he can
use his own choice of back-up software. If the drive cannot be formatted,
can he still use his own choice of software and not use the WD back-up
software. If so, how is this done. he is running windows media centre fully
updated

- Net Use Question

I have a simple Workgroup at home and all I want to do is share a drive.
Primary computer is set up with
Login: phil
Password:123
IP 192.168.60.155
Shared Name: e
Drive I want: E:
I want to set this up so it will auto login every time from my other
computer. This is what I used.
net use e: \\192.168.60.155\e password:123 /User:phil /Persistent:Yes
It tells me the password is bad.
If I just use:
net use e: \\192.168.60.155\e /user:phil
It then prompts me for the pw and i just type in 123 and everything works.
How do you get it to take the password?

- Upgrading an OS, changing an OS, Downgrading an OS?

I was wondering something. This is the situation:
I currently have an OEM computer that came with Windows XP 32-bit. I just
called Microsoft and asked the rep: if I were to install a windows Vista or 7
upgrade onto this computer, can I later clear the system completely, and
re-install the original version of windows XP from the boot dvd-rom?
I was encouraged to go with the upgrade from my current XP install, not buy
a new full-version OS. People on this site and a few others have recommended
against the upgrades, and to do the clean installs.
I have XP Home premium. If I put a vista upgrade on here, it would be to
home premium also.
But, the rep told me that once I install that Vista upgrade, I can never
downgrade. Unless it is to the xp professional or another version (the two
more expensive and higher end versions). I believe that the rep also said
this applies to windows vista, if I were to try and downgrade from Windows 7.
He mentioned something about XP and Vista are no longer supported. But for
some issues and for a fee in certain situations there is technical support
supplied.
What I do not understand is: If I were to completely erase my system, erase
the OS, and start from absolutly nothing and re-install windows - How can I
not re-install that old version of xp from the (or a) boot cd? Would some
sort of microsoft installed program prevent me from doing that? Or would this
be noted around the product key, and when I tried to validate it, it won't
validate?
People build computers all the time as a hobby and erase stuff and switch
OS's. They don't always upgrade an OS. There are people who build computers
used, and do thsi regularly.
Maybe since I have an OEM, it's different. But I did pay for the OEM
Operating System. I did pay for the computer. And it would be reinstalled on
the exact same computer.
I am curious mainly due to a potentialy need to re-install a stable back-up.
And what if I really don't like Vista? I want to try it more. It looks cool.
But waht if after two weeks of it being on my computer, I want XP back? The
answer to my question is not to buy windows 7 and install. Please humor me
about Vista.
This is also a concern I have about just installing Windows Vista or 7
64-bit to see what happens on my computer. I think I was told on the phone I
cannot revert back to the XP 32-bit?
One day I plan to sell or give this computer away. Obviously I'm not keeping
anything from this computer, except some hardware. If I can't put XP back on
here, and maybe put a Vista 32-bit upgrade how can this computer ever work
again? What if I tried Vista or 7 64-bit and removed it to put it onto my new
computer at that future date? I cannot put the old OS back onto this computer
to give away or sell?
Also: If I wanted to try Vista or 7 64-bit on my computer: Can I remove it
and place it onto another computer? Would the validation process work? It
would only be on one computer each time, I am not pirating an OS. It would
probably be a home premium version. I don't really need the other ones unless
they are on a cheap sale. I can/will call microsoft about this last
question. I just ran out of time, they closed.
