- mobo beeps
-
Hi,
I have a Dell PC that has suddenly stopped working. When I try to start it I
get nothing except a series of beeps. It sounds like 6 beeps in a 1-2-1-2
configuration or it could be 3 beeps twice. What does that mean?

- A temporary TEMP account is produced on occassion
-
Using XP Home SP3, fully patched and clean system (virus and 5 malware
scanners used regularly and nothing found).
I have noticed this problem happen 3 times so far (approx 2 months between
occurrences on average).
The problem is: A user on our PC logs into his/her account and a temporary
account is generated on that occasion. I know about this problem as I have
had to deal with someone else's PC where I had to port across all the files
from their old account to a newly created account as a temporary profile had
been produced.
When I look in Documents And Settings when this happens on our PC, sure
enough, there is a TEMP account folder.
If, however, we log out more or less straight away, wait a few seconds and
log back in again, the profile loads successfully and normally and there is
no longer a TEMP account folder present. It is now ok until the next time
this happens - which could be months away..
Is this just a hiccough, or should I be more concerned. I have run a HDD
diagnostic and found no problems so far.
Any suggestions, or should I just ignore it?
Martin

- Wi-fi failed connection
-
I have a Toshiba R150 laptop pc and set up wireless connection at home and
works correctly. I also use it at various locations without any issues.
Recently, I encountered failure connection in two locations where are at our
suppliers. The first one was that I could not connect to the AP with given
password. I went together with my colleagues who worked with the AP without
issue. Yesterday, I visited another supplier who had an AP without any
password. My colleagues worked very well except me. I could connect the AP
but my computer always said my IP was same as others and failed to work
properly. I have no cure how to diagnostic it and trace the cause. Can
someone advise me how to track down the issues.

- VPN over Internet
-
Hello Group,
Presently, I am running 2 Internet Cafes and Game Station in my home town.
Both cafes have a distance of approximate 1000 Mtrs. Both cafes are using
high-speed broadband internet connection. Both cafes have 8-8 Desktops PCs
indiviually running and 1 server each for internet sharing. All the PCs have
Windows XP SP2 Installed including the server.
The problem is: Far Cry 2 is very much popular on both cafes and people like
to play it in multiplayer mode. On both cafes, there is no problem playing
the game in multiplayer mode individually. But a few days before, my brother
asked me that why can't we play the game with each other? Is there a way to
connect all PCs of Cafe 1 with Cafe 2, so we all can play the game
simultaneously.
I am not so good in networking so I decided to use Team Viewer. I created to
seprate IDs in Teamviewer e.g. MyCafe1 and MyCafe2. Now, suppose if there are
3 players in Cafe 1 and 2 players in Cafe 2, who wants to play the game then
what I do is:
The computer which will create the game uses the MyCafe1 ID for teamviewer
and all other PCs of Cafe 1 and Cafe 2 uses the MyCafe2 ID to join the game
using VPN feature of VPN. Mostly, it works fine but sometimes some of users
are unable to join the game.
However, it is not a

- Windows wont start with USB printer plugged in
-
I have now got two club members that can not start Windows if their USB printer is connected.
In both cases the computer goes to the BIOS splash screen and freezes.
In one case it is a Dell Computer with an HP printer.
In the second case it is an HP Computer with an Epson printer.
If you remove the printer USB cable, the computer starts and load the desktop just fine.
Then you can plug the printer cable in and use the printer computer and printer.
But if the printer USB cable is connected, printer power off or on, then the computer go to the BIOS
splash screen. Dell in one case, HP in the other case and just stays there. In both cases, I have
deleted the printers and re-installed the printers with updated drivers obtained of the printer
vendor web site. I have reviewed the BIOS setting in both computers and any USB start-up options
are not obvious.
Any thoughts? Both computers are located about 20 miles from me, so instant checks are not easy to
come by.

- No FAT or FAT32 access
-
No response on ....help_and_support, so I'll try here.
I have WinXP Home SP3 on one machine and find that I am no longer able
to access FAT32-formatted thumb drives or FAT-formatted floppies: I can
read them on other systems, but this machine tells me they are unformatted.
No anti-virus/internet security software is in operation when I try this.
I've so seldom used floppies or FAT32-formatted media on this machine
that a whole lot of changes will have taken place since it was able to
read such media successfully.
I insert a floppy that has been formatted on another machine.
DIR A: from command prompt reports no recognizable file system.
CHKDSK /F A: reports file system is FAT, no errors found.
DIR A: reports no recognizable file system.
FORMAT A: reports success.
CHKDSK /F A: reports file system is FAT, no errors found.

Double-click on disk icon in My Computer reports disk is not formatted.
RMB -> Format reports Windows cannot complete format.
CHKDSK /F A: reports file system is FAT, no errors found.

Take disk to another machine; CHKDSK /F A: reports that file system is

I copy files to that disk on that machine; success.
Bring disk back to the problem computer; DIR A: reports no recognizable
file system.
Google found a reference to this (or a similar) problem at
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
I copied the i386 folder from the installation CD to C:, made the
recommended changes to the registry, and ran
sfc /scannow
Nothing has changed as far as FAT-formatted media are concerned.

- What to do when it ask for amrt.msi?
-
What is amrt.msi?
When I tried to install Eudora 7.1 on a new netbook with XP home, it
said "THE FEATURE YOU ARE TRYING TO USE IS ON A NETWORK RESOURCE THAT
IS UNAVAILABLE." Since I couldn't find amrt.msi, the only other
choice was to cancel the install.
I guess since Eudora is so unreliant on Windows, the install was
complete anyhow, but I'd still like to know.
I'm running Eudora 7.0.1 on my own XP, but I never installed it. I
run it from the win98SE partition, which is accessible from winXP.
And on a win2000 computer, I also never installed it. I just copied
all the files from a flashdrive that was copied from win98SE. So I've
never installed it before, except on win98.
There were two web posts asking about this, unrelated to Eudora and
both dealing with Windows 7. Anyone who answered didnt' know what it
was, thought it might be a virus; but I just did a complete scan with
CA Security Center on the HD, in the reconditioned ACER netbook my
friend just bought from Comp-USA.
Posted to an XP and the Eudora groups.

- Oddity in the Recycle Bin
-
Windows XP Home Edition SP3
Internet Explorer 8
Doing routine maintenance this evening I got rid of several small videos and
mpegs which I'd uploaded to you-tube; I emptied the recycle bin and then
defragged and when the defrag finished I noticed there was still something in
the recycle bin. I first double-left clicked rb, and it showed nothing. Then
I right clicked and clicked "open" and it still showed nothing even though on
the desktop recycle bin icon showed something. So, I clicked "Empty Recycle
Bin" and was asked "Are you sure you want to delete 'Windows'?" Naturally I
hit "cancel" and the icon on the desktop still shows something in recycle bin.
Anybody know whassup??

- Registry Cleaners Affecting the Ability to Boot
-
I am in the same camp as most regulars here who wouldn't advise someone
to use a registry cleaner in order to boost a PC's overall
performance/speed. No one has ever been able to provide solid evidence
to back up such a claim.
That being said, whenever I caution people not to use these programs, I
normally add that sometimes these cleaners have been known to cause a
situation where the PC becomes unbootable. I seem to remember reading a
number of posts in these XP newsgroups from people who have reported
this behavior.
But now I wonder. (Memories often are not reliable!) I do value
evidence. But I Googled for instances where this sort of behavior
happens and I couldn't find anything convincing! The closest I could
find was this post:
http://forums.comodo.com/comodo-system-cleaner-fileregistryprivacy-cleaner/csc-registry-cleaner-causing-system-being-unable-to-boot-t38353.0.html;wap2=
And newsgroup archives? Just a few hits, _total_:
http://groups.google.com/groups/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=%22unable+to+boot%22+%22registry+cleaner%22&btnG=Search&sitesearch=groups.google.com
(arguably I could have opened up the search, but 5 results?!)
Then again, Google is nowhere near as good as it once was when it comes
to searching archived Usenet posts. But was I imagining posts mentioning
these occurences?
I still won't be recommending these programs since, again, there is no
evidence they are beneficial. I would imagine if someone is overzealous,
real damage could occur (just like with regedit). But if someone could
point me to some posts where someone actually did have the behavior
described (i.e., not able to boot after running a registry "cleaner" or
"optimizer"), I would appreciate it. Otherwise, I will have to stop
making that claim. (However, until someone provides *real* evidence that
these cleaners boost performance, I will continue to make the claim that
the evidence for *that* does not exist.) Evidence is evidence, and I
feel that my advice is more valuable if it is not tainted by unfounded
opinion.

- Oh no, MicroSoft Blew It Again...
-
Just got done installing the latest patch to fix whatever deadly IE hole it
was that allowed the Google attack. Five machines. 1 Win 7 and 4 XP Pro.
After doing the mandatory reboots at the end two of the XP machines wound
up with destroyed profiles. It seems that nobody at MS bothered to test
(test? what is test?) the process of installing the patch and rebooting via
remote desktop -- the way I routinely perform all tasks on machines outside
my office. I wasn't alerted to that situation, having had years of random
mysterious profile corruptions occurring, before I tried to log into the
second machine and had it go belly up too. Made my way the the other two XP
machines personally and logged in and they survived.
So I guess I'll be spending even more time trying to recover from something
which should never have been allowed to happen in the first place. Leaves
me wondering what will happen if MS ever gets around to trying to patch
that ancient hole which has been around since NT days and which exists in
all operating systems ever since. They could wind up bringing on the
apocalypse.

- XP Pro Repair - will not accept key code
-
I do computer tech for a small university.
I have a students XP Pro laptop which we had to run repair on (we provide
free computer repair to all students) and as part of the repair it naturally
asks for our XP Pro volume licensing key.
The key was entered and accepted, then the install locked up with the
ubiquidous 39 minutes remaining (sat there for over an hour, no HDD
activity).
I did a hard reboot and restarted the repair, but now when it comes to the
activation key window, it says the key (same one as before) is not a valid
key.
Where do I go from here, is there no way to get past this roadblock?
We have 3 or 4 VLK's all of which work ordinarily, but not this time.

- How to create a partition on an external USB drive?
-
Toshiba Tablet XP Home/Student with plenty of memory. I have the
program DriveImage XML. At one point it says to create a partition
somewhere for the image it's going to create. I have a 40G external
plug and play HD. I'd like to create a partition on it without
disturbing other files and folders I have on it. There's plenty of
free space. Various resources say use XP Disk Management to create
that partition. So when I go there it appears as they say but when
they say click on the free space choose the selection "Create new
partiton." I have right clicked everywhere in that program on the
USBHD gui and no where do I get a create new partition. I get OPEN/
EXPLORE / CHANGE DRIVE LETTER AND PATHS / FORMAT / DELETE PARTITION /
PROPERTIES / HELP. I was hoping to put an image there of my laptops
drive C that could be restored, an exact copy with all programs etc.
ERU NT doesn't serve me, I've tried that so this seems to be the way.
Any help that is understandable to a moderate tech user here? Thanks

- cant start my user-created service.. error 1053
-
We have several XP machines at my place of business where, upon a user
logging in and the desktop loading, they simply get a blank wallpaper
and cursor and it stays like that indefinitely. The problem is
intermittent. I found that explorer isn=92t running automatically when
this happens. I could simply C-A-D, get to Task Manager, start a new
task and run explorer that way, which would then bring the rest of the
desktop.
Unfortunately, this is a little too much for our end users to be able
to remember. So I whipped up a little AutoIT script to put in their
startup folder, that checks for the presence of the process
"explorer.exe" and if not present, then run it.
However, if explorer isn=92t running, doesn=92t that mean my script won=92t
get ran either, causing a catch 22?
I had the idea of adding my script as a windows service... thinking
that even if explorer doesn=92t run, services will still start normally.
But I=92m having trouble creating the service. I tried the following:
sc create "Run Explorer" binPath=3D "C:\runexplorer.exe"
This succeeded, however I=92m unable to ever start the service. When I
try:
Sc start =93Run Explorer=94
it always dies with: "StartService failed 1053: The service did not
respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
I get the same error trying to start it via services.msc. Anyone have
any ideas why? TIA

The system is a pc, Win XP SP3. The user created her own toolbar called "My

is to a webpage. We use Firefox as our default browser (Sorry Microsoft!).
However, when clicking on this shortcut/link from the toolbar, the page opens
with IE. (IE 7). However, when opening the containing folder where the same
link is stored and opening the link from the containing folder, it opens
properly in Firefox.
So...what the heck is going on here??? And, yes, Firefox is set as the

- How do I upgrade from XP Home edition to XP Professional
-
Hello folks...
Happy new year to everyone!
We are still a XP shop and XP will be our standard for a while longer and I
can't change that.
But now I need to upgrade four Dell notebook Computers from XP Home edition
to XP PROFESSIONAL. I read somewhere that I can buy licensing for Windows 7
and then call Microsoft to obtain Media and product keys for XP Professional
after I receive the Windows 7 media.
Is that true? In any case, I need to get XP Professional for 4 Dell
notebook computers. What is the best way to proceed and is this even
possible?
What phone number do I call at Microsoft to obtain this information perhaps
even obtaining part numbers and get a clearly written document that says I
can get this done?
Please advise....

- Recurring folder on desktop
-
I am using XP SP3 with Word 2003 and have a somewhat strange issue I would
appreciate some feedback on.
I created a folder on my desktop that I stored items in before transferring
them named â??Compilation.â?? After I stopped using this computer for
transferring stuff, I deleted the folder, emptied the recycling bin, ran
CCleaner, and disk clean up.
For some reason thatâ??s beyond me, thereafter everytime I have started my
machine the folder re-appears! I have tried changing the name, but a new
â??Compilationâ?? folder still shows up.
Any ideas as to how I can make it go away?

- Looking for advice on PC Cloning?
-
I finally have enough of the same model computers where I can start to think
about cloning...
I found this review and wanted to see if anyone has any advice on what I
should use.
http://disk-imaging-software-review.toptenreviews.com
I've used "Norton Ghost" a few years back, it worked well and I suspect it's
been updated since I used it...
The Paragon and Norton Ghost both have a Change SID option.
When I used Ghost before I used a Microsoft utility SysPrep, I believe it
wiped the SID and then I would make a copy of the disk\partition...
Any real world advice for todays world?
Any considerations for Windows 7? I'm currently running XP Pro but will soon
add some 7 machines.
Any advice would be appreciated!

- Uncommanded Update Check
-
A few days ago I changed the automatic update settings (Control
Panel->Security) to only check for updates each Thursday at 8am.
This morning, Wednesday, I was surprised to get an alert for a Silverlight
update.
Does anyone know why this happened? Would another program like McAffee
(which I have installed now), or Microsoft Security Essentials (which I plan
to replace McAffee with) independently check for updates?
Thanks

- XP slow to load programs
-
This is one of those questions that I don't think anyone has an answer to.
The programs on my xp machine are very slow to load ie outlook takes 3
minutes. The loading time keep getting longer and longer over time. I did
all the standard stuff, defragged, ran three spyware programs, three
registry cleanup programs, ran windows update, limited the number of startup
programs, ran disk cleanup and etc. I have 2 gig or ram and half of my 200g
hard drive is empty. It just keeps slowing down over the months.
Sadly, I think that this is just standard windows behaviour that we have
come to accept and live with. Is there any real fix that anyone is aware of
that actually works to retstore performance besides reformatting? Thank you.

- keyboard

I havebeen looking everywhere in the ControlPanel for the icon tht allows me
to choose the languages to be used on the keyboard, but can't find it!
Where do I have to go? For instance, right now, on the task bar I have
three languages and would like to change the predefined one.
Thank you

- Storage System - SSD or PODS (Plain Old Drive System)
-
My System:
1) Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz
2) Processor Speed 2.43 GHz
3) Memory (RAM) 2048 MB
4) Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
5) Operating System Version 5.1.2600120GB Sata II Harddisk
-------------------
I am planning following upgrade;
1) 4GB memory
2) 128GB SSD Disk with TRIM ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIM )
Question, are there any fixes for XP Professional SP3(i will unstall SP3 if
I have to) that will support TRIM withh an SSD drive? I know that SSD without
TRIM will become slow and sluggish.
If I can't get TRIM in XP would getting a larger Hard disk have same effect?
I am thinking following HDD:
1) Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 - hard drive - 500 GB - SATA-300 -

2) WD Scorpio WD3200BJKT - hard drive - 320 GB - SATA 3 Gb/s -

3) Seagate Constellation ST9500530NS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache 2.5" SATA

- Mystery disabled icon on desktop - how remove it?
-
Using XP Home SP3. An icon has appeared on the desktop of my wife's
laptop. The icon is grayed out as though it is disabled. It does not
have a caption. If I right click the icon I get a context menu with
three choices:
Cut
Create Shortcut
Delete
Choosing cut does nothing. Choosing Create Shortcut produces an error
dialog with the message, "Windows could not create the shortcut. Check
to see if the disk is full."
Choosing Delete displays a confirmation dialog with the message, "Are
you sure you want to delete these icons from your desktop? To restore
later, go to control panel."
The only icon I want to delete is the unlabled grayed out icon. I do
not want to delete any others, therefore, I am afraid to try the Delete
choice on the menu since I do not know what will be deleted or how to
restore it via Control Panel.
Can anyone tell me what this mysterious icon is and how to get rid of
it?
By the way, I have checked in Documents and Settings\<username>\Desktop
and in Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop and the mystery icon
does not appear in either folder.

- Another Recover vs Format/reinstall question
-
Greetings, All.
This has probably been answered here someplace, but seeing as there are
about a gajillion questions and answers, I figured it'd be quicker to ask
afresh. So:
I have a few-years old Dell (WinXP SP3 and all attendant updates) that is
suffering from the usual ailments; slowness, etc. I'm PRETTY sure it came
with a recovery disk vice an actual WinXP disc [I'm at work, and it's at
home].
My question (in a few parts) is this:
Since these discs are supposed to return your PC to "factory condition", is
there a difference between just popping it in and going, or doing a complete
format and THEN reinstalling? Does either carry an advantage?
Part II: if indeed it is a Recovery disc, is there a way to backup the
beaucoup updates that have come out since then, or am I doomed to redownload
alllllll of them? :-p
Part III: if I luck out and it's a WinXP disc instead of Recovery, what is
the *best* way to create a slipstream disc, so as to avoid the aforementioned
re-downloading horror?
Many thanks!
Chuck
