- Windows Security Center/Antivirus Problem
-
For the past couple of days Windows Security Center has been sending
pop-up alerts on my husband's computer saying that his Virus Protection
is out of date. It is NOT out of date. The antivirus program (Ca
antivirus) shows the last product update as today. A virus scan comes up
clean. So does a spyware scan (Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes). Any ideas?

- System has recovered from a serious error

Ever since getting this error message, my computer has been running slow,
having lines pop up across the screen sporadically, black screen, and frozen
pages. I have tried system restore to a date where I know it was not
happening ~ it did NOT fix the problem. I do have kids ~ and I have no idea
if they downloaded anything that could be causing this. I ran my spysweeper
with anti-virus ~ nothing came up.
Please help ;~) Thanks. Michelle

- mouse wheel issue
-
OE and O2003 (and earlier versions) seem to know which panel in the program
you have your mouse over when you roll the mouse wheel. You don't have to
click into the panel to tell it. For example, if you have Outlook open and
you hold your mouse pointer over the mail folders panel and *without*
clicking into it you move the wheel, the folders scroll up and down. Then if
you move over to the panel that shows what's in one fo the folders (inbox
for example) and again *without* clicking into that panel, moving the wheel
again scrolls the contents of that panel, not the one you were in before.
There are other programs that do this as well. However, this is NOT the case
with Windows Explorer which I use all day long. It's very annoying that you
have to click into the panel on the right that shows the tree of folders in
order for the wheel to scroll that area. It would seem that if MS can make O
and OE behave properly then they could do the same with W.E. Seems logical
but oh well. Maybe this is fixed in 7? It would just be nice if it were a
consistent behavior in software that comes from the same company.

Hi All,
We are trying to manage certificates wich are allocated in the Active

We can access the certificate, but when trying to sign with it, the system

"The signer's certificate is not valid for signing"
When using that same certificate locally, there's not a problem.

- Chasing Windows
-
Would anyone know of a way to keep new pages from stealing the active page
upon opening? It is terriably frustrating to have to keep chasing the active
page as new pages open. I'm running XP on an ACER and our systems tend to be
slow because of our hardware combinations. It is not unsual for me to be
working in one docu and decide I need info from another docu or docus or web
site, go start those pages opening and go back to my active page, all without
loosing my train of thought - until the other pages finally start opening and
stealing my active page. After I have chased my active page and brought it
back a couple times it is not unsual for me to have lost my train of thought.
As if that isn't bad enough, reopening my active page is not simply clicking
its icon on the toolbar. Even though my active page's icon is still lit up on
the tool bar, the new page has replaced my active page and is open on the
screen. To get back to my active page I must first click and open some other
page then click back to my active page. It is a long, drawn out, train of
thought busting process. Perhaps it would be smarter to simply start the new
openings and go get a cup of coffee, but that is about as antiproductive as
chasing my active page all over the place. Everything would be so much less
complicated (and a whole bunch less frustrating) if opening pages simply did
not steal the active page. All ideas, comments, and suggestions will be
greatly appreciated. Thanks K.

sometimes I can tune K47LDD and then KTVL-DT and a good results.

- Too Slow to Open O.E.6
-
Hi:
Opening I.E. is in normal speed, however when clicking O.E. 6 at the top of
Icon of O.E.6, it's SO slow and very sluggish to open, .... even after
making a cup of coffee in the kitchen, it's still NOT opening-up. It takes
more than one or even two minutes to open.
Prior to this, O.E.6 opens instantamaneously, within 40 seconds or so upon
clicking O.E. 6 icon at the top of the screen.
Any clues on this would be truly appreciated.

- Unable To Install ATI Display Driver
-
I have an onboard video card and would like to install the ATI driver for

problem is, when I try to install the ATI driver I get an error message that
the display driver isn't compatible with the display adapter installed on my
system. How do I fix this? Do I uninstall the display adapter--or is that
hardware? I don't want to uninstall the current display driver because I'm
not sure how to get it back into the system if things go wrong. What's the
best way to handle this?

- Question: Nearly Empty, But Still Full Hard Drive
-
I have a Dell XPS-Z 866Mhz Pentium 3, with 384mb and a 20Gig hard
drive, which is running a fresh install of Windows XP.
For some reason even though I've transferred about 1 gig worth of
files back to the drive it is almost full, causing the reminders to
keep popping up. Before I re-installed windows XP I had the same
problem, and even thought I deleted all I could the hard drive would
begin to fill up again for no discernible reason.
And this is definitely not the first time I've had this problem. Can
anyone list the things that would cause this, and what I could try to
correct this problem?
Thanks.

- How to change the key combination of a program
-
I've a program (*.exe) which gets started just after the Windows logon
and which functionality I use. This program unfortunately uses the key
combination 'Ctrl + F5' to display an info message box. That's very
bad because I have another program where I really need the key
combination 'Ctrl + F5' and unfortunately the first program "wins" so
that if I use 'Ctrl + F5' the info message box appears.
Because the programmer of the first program doesn't offer any
possibility to change the key combination I'm trying to find a way to
change it by myself.
Here's my approach:
Somewhere in the program (*.exe) there must be some commands which
tell Windows what to do if someone uses the key combination 'Ctrl +
F5'. I'd like to edit that commands directly in the *.exe file (with
debug, hexedit, ...) so that not the key combination 'Ctrl + F5' is
used but e.g. 'Ctrl + F12'.
I think that should work but the problem is how to find the commands
which define this key combination.
In DOS it was the interrupt INT 9 (keyboard interrupt) so that I could
search for INT 9. However, I've no idea for what I have to search in
Windows XP.
Any help or idea how I could change the key comination 'Ctrl + F5' to
e.g. 'Ctrl + F12' is very appreciated.

- The MVP Program
-
Some posts by an MVP around here prompted me to take a look at the
requirements for becoming an MVP:
"The MVP Award recognizes exceptional technical community leaders from
around the world who voluntarily share their deep, real-world knowledge
about Microsoft technologies with others.
"Potential MVPs are nominated by other technical community members,
current and former MVPs, and Microsoft personnel who have noted their
leadership and their willingness and ability to help others make the
most of their Microsoft technology.
"...The panel considers the quality, quantity, and level of impact of
the MVP nominee's contributions. Active MVPs receive the same level of
scrutiny as other new candidates each year."
It seems that the integrity of the designation requires a certain
professional demeanor and at least some degree of helpfulness and
respect. Does anyone ever lose their MVP designation?

- Windows 7 and Actonis True Iamge
-
I see no newsgroup for Windows 7, so I'll post this here. If there is Win 7
group, please advise the "name" so that I can locate it.
I'm starting the build of my new machine, which will use Windows 7 Pro 64
bit. I've been a long time fan of Acronis True Image since version 8, and am
currently using version 11 in XP. And it has saved my butt on many
occasions. I image my system drive weekly, and when a system drive fails, or
has some "tragic event", Acronis TI always saves the day.
From what I see, I'll have to upgrade to version 2010 (which is apparently
version 12) to use it in Win 7 64 bit. But I've seen a lot of horror stories
about people having very serious problems in Win 7 64 bit. The MS
compatibility page shows it to be "fine" in Win7 64 bit though.
Does anyone here have any experience/info on this situation. And, if it is a
problem in Win 7 64, are there any good similar programs out there? Since I
hate Symantec, I won't go with their Ghost software.
I do know that Windows 7 has a "Backup & Restore" utility built right in.
But it seems to be pretty barebones. And TI does offer a "CD create" utility
to boot up the system. and run TI from the CD, when the Windows OS on the
system hard drive is not functioning due to a corruption or HD failure.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

- How to disable auto lock

By the group policy, all PC's which are joined to the domain are

The situation is like the following. I am using a virtual machine and
this is also joined to the domain (using "Bridged connection"). When I
am using my PC, I often running the virtual machine too, but I do not

I was thinking about creating a utility that send a bogus mouse

I'm about to make a change in the registry on my new WinXP computer. I'd
like to back up the registry first. In Googling how to do it, I came across
a Microsoft knowledge base article (KB322756) that said creating a Restore
point in System Restore would work. Is that sufficient?
Thank you!

- The Indexing Service query cannot be completed successfully
-
I'm trying to do a search for *.txt files containing a certain phrase
and am unable to do so. When I try I get the following message:
Search Companion
The Indexing Service query cannot be completed successfully
because the volumes you have specified are not indexed.
I can do searches for *.txt files containing phrases in other
directories - just not this particular one. How can I reenable it?

- OT: Windows 7 (XP with a new look!)
-
What a heap of crap, ...not just Windows 7 but, also the Asus X5DIJ laptop
that I just bought for my Aunty !!!
Having just finished a late shift at work, I thought I'd run the Asus
"Recovery Disc Creation" procedure, (Laptop arrived this morning, just
before I had to go to work), so that it gets done. ....ready for when I
take it in to her tommorrow morning. The supplied "AI Recovery" has been
running for over 45 minutes, first creating a backup image, then ISO files,
...then it finally burnt the 1st ISO image to DVD+r ...or they may be -r'
discs btw, not sure now, (good wuality ones btw), ....and then the f*****g
thing decided to verify the first DVD+r that had been burnt.
Over 45 minutes !!!!!, ...it's 00:55am, I would really like to go to bed and
sleep !!!, ...and it was still verifying that 1st DVD+r when I came out to
my office here to have a rant.
I'm 54 years old and have been using PC's since they were invented, and with
all the hardware and software "development" across the past THIRTY years
there appears to be NO decrease in the time it takes the b****y things to
b****y well get on and do something !!!
During recent months, I've been used to Norton Ghost 14.0 backing up my main
PC hard-drive in less than 6 minutes (internal SATAII hd to SATAII hd's).
So quite what this heap of crap is up to - goodness only knows !
best regards,
Richard
