Firefox - new windows, lag time, about 20 seconds before the new
window shows - any ideas?
This is a recent phenomenon - whenever I use Firefox and try to use
CNTL N or open new window (or if a link takes me to a new window),
there is sudden lag time of about 15-20 seconds before it appears.
Not sure why. Going to post in the firefox forum as well. Any ideas?

- Answer to the most annoying problem of Windows 7
-
This message was posted here because:
1. I couldn't find any newsgroup on Microsoft Communities for Windows 7
(which I believe is an absolute must)
2. the program mentioned at the end would also work for Vista.
From day one of upgrading to Windows 7, I was faced with the unpleasant
reality that Win7 doesn't remember the size and position of folders. To
further
torture me, for some reason unknown to me, it began to restrict some
programs' windows--such as IE , Outlook, Chrome, and a few other--to a fixed
size and position, not allowing any change no matter how many times I
resized, repositioned and restarted them. I even went as far as deleting the
"frame" entry in the registry for some programs such as Outlook, but it just
made the window to open in a new smaller uncompromising size and position!
After a very long time spend on searching the net and reading no-solution
answers, all I was able to find a little utility called "ShellFolderFix"
which through its awkward interface, solved the problem for Windows folders,
but not the programs. I read comments saying that they had bad experience
with some paid programs (such as Windows Manager) which allowed fixing the
size and position of program windows and nobody knew of anything that
worked.
Tired of spending more hours than a fulltime job on the issue, I was about
to give up when on my very last try I stumbled upon a fantastic *little*
freeware developed by someone in Japan which not only allows for fixing the
size and position of folders as well as *program* windows, but it also has
many other features which I hadn't even heard before. Furthermore, it's only
60 kb, doesn't require
installation (just run the file), and it allows for selective fixing of the
size and position of the program Windows, and it also works on XP, Vista
and Windows 7!
Why such a long post on my little discovery? because through my many days of
searching, I came across many people with the same problem, and thought that
the least I could do is to share this wonderful solution with as many people
as
I can and save them the time and trouble of trying things that won't work.
Program's name is "Pitaschio" (no, not pistachio!)
Link: http://pitaschio.ara3.net
Enjoy,
Brian

- Task Schedular Problem.
-
Hello, I have several tasks and apps that have been scheduled to run and
have been working for some time. Now the tasks seem to run, but do not work
interactively (by this I mean there is no window or app displayed on the
desktop).
If I look at Task Manage, I can see it in the list, but nothing on screen.
I created a new taks several times today for "cmd.exe". Again, it shows up
in Task manager, but nada.
I reset my password, the administrator password and even created a new
account belonging to the Admin Group. Same thing?
Windows XP, SP3 with all the hotfixes, patches and updates.
This just started yesterday after 12:00 noon (that was the end time of my
last scheduled task).
Help would be appreciated.
Thanks

- Changing default icons associated with .exe program files
-
Am using Windows XP SP3 and have the following two media players installed
in the Program Files folder:
1) Media Player Classic (mplayerc.exe)
2) Media Player Classic Home Cinema (mpc-hc.exe)
Both of these .exe program files are being assigned the same default icon by
WinXP.
I would like to assign a different icon to say, mpc-hc.exe, such that it is
clearly identifiable in the right click context file menu such as Open
with... At this time, both of these media players are being identified by
the same name i.e. "Media Player Classic" and the same default Win XP icon.
Is there a way within Win XP, without installing a 3rd party
free/share/adware utility, to reassign a different icon to it?
I have already been able to change the icons assigned to all shortcuts on
Desktop and Start Menu that point to these two media players and those are
looking and working rather cool.
With thanks,

- Arrange Icons By - Not the usual questions
-
Hi Guys, I'd appreciate a bit of advice.
In any folder, when you right-click and choose Arrange Icons By, you get a
list of ways they can be arranged.
I know that you can add to this list from the menu bar by choosing
View/Choose details.
What I want to be able to do is to select ALL the available details, and to
apply this to ALL folders, so that in future I can select the arrange option
I want from the right-click menu.
Is this possible?
Many thanks,

But sometimes I get log reports such as the following:

What does this mean? Is the Adobe software working in the

- how to remove deleted fine names?
-
When a file is deleted it can often be easily recovered with UNDELETE
software. I'm wanting to completely remove any trace of certain deleted
files, including the file name from FAT's.
I've googled and found the following; there are shredder or WIPE tools which
will overwrite the space a deleted file resided in, but I've found none
which can remove the deleted files name. In fact one comment stated, "in NT
it's not possible to remove (delete) a deleted files name"! Thought that
sounded strange, could do it in W98 with Nut's and Bolts software.
Is it true that XP (NT) does not allow a deleted files name to be removed
from the file allocation tables (i.e. it can be easily seen with undelete
software even though the freespace has been wiped)? It seems EVERY trace of
any file should be able to be deleted ... but how?

- Effect on Daylight Savings on attributes of backup files
-
I use a portable drive to keep files synchronized between my
home and office computers.
The problem is that when Daylight Savings Time arrives the
files on the portable drive get out of sync with the desktop
computers by one hour. This doesn't necessarily cause a
problem with my synchronization program, because the time
difference apparently doesn't change the files' CRC numbers
(if that's what they're called). I wouldn't have expected
that, but it apparently seems to be so.
Still, once Daylight Savings Time strikes, in the file
attributes the creation and modification dates of *all* of
the files on the portable drive become one hour "older" than
the ones on the desktops. In the fall, when Standard Time
comes back, the converse happens.
Because there are so many files (well over 100,000), were I
to synchronize them by time of modification rather than by
CRC, it would take forever to get them back in sync. Also,
I'm concerned that some day this "de-synchronizing" of the
file times could cause confusion leading to a mistake on my
part if the time of creation or modification of a file ever
became important for some reason.
I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to keep the times
coordinated on these files. Leaving the portable drive
connected to a desktop overnight doesn't do it.
Thanks.

- TrueCrypt 6.3a - Compilation Errors
-
Hi
I'm having difficulties compiling TrueCrypt 6.3a,
possibly because I'm not quite sure as to how to
set up all extra libraries/tools.
1. The PC's specs I was using to compile were:
- Pentium 4 w/2gb RAM
- WinXP Pro w/s.p.2
- MS Visual C++ 2008 Pro
- RSA Security Inc. PKCS #11 Cryptographic Token Interface 2.20
- NASM 2.07 (Win32) installed
2. The things I wasn't sure about were:
- For MS Visual C++ 2008 Pro:
+ was s.p.1 really necessary, or could I've
done without? It's just that, as I recall,
when I tried to run an update with that s.p.1
thing, it took well over an hour to complete,
and as far as I knew all it did was to add in
some Silverlight functions. Obvioulsy I'd
rather skip this 1 hour wait, if that s.p.1
is not absolutely necessary.
- For NASM 2.07:
+ I added NASM to the External Tools menu command
of the MS Visual C++ 2008 Pro IDE, and it did
appear, after that as yet another menu command,
however upon compilation there were several error
messages claiming that NASM was not available,
even though its path seemed to be correct.
- For MS Visual C++ 1.52:
+ wasn't this an Win 3.1 compiler?
+ what is it good for anyways, if TrueCrypt is
to be compiled with a .NET compiler in the
first place?
- For Gzip compressor:
+ is there a utility or DLL to install/register?
+ how would any of the compilers (if any) recognize
or make use of that Gzip thing?
- For PKCS #11 2.20:
+ what folder was I supposed to put it in?
+ I did declare an environment variable of type 'System'
for 'PKCS11_INC' with the path pointing to the contents
of one of the ZIP file: there were a bunch of '.h' files.
- For Windows SDK for Windows 7:
+ what if I was to use TrueCrypt only on WinXP?
neither Vista, nor Win7, at all?
- For Windows Driver Kit 7.0.0:
+ would this have been the replacement / only driver SDK available
for all Win versions from now on? In other words, what if I want
to use TrueCrypt on a Win98 machine - do I still have to compile
it on an NT based system?
Any ideas on how to get TC to compile?
Thanks in advance
LL

- Quicklaunch Toolbar
-
I use this toolbar a lot since I don't want a lot of
icons on the desktop. I have the toolbar sized so that about
10 icons show in the QL area and about 10 more less frequently
used hidden behind the >> next to the systray. However, at boot
up, they seem to be ordered in no particular sequence.
1. Tried the registry fix at Kelly's Corner (#54 right side). No joy.
2. Tried unlocking toolbar, ordering as desired then locking toolbar. No
joy.
3. Tried TweakUI. Couldn't find anything relevant.
4. Tried opening the toolbar folder, renaming the icon files with prepended
000,001,002, etc. This works only slightly, since every day at boot up
I have to right click the hidden icons, accessed by >>, and select
order by name.
I suppose one solution is to only have the 10 most used and delete the
others
but there must be a way around this.

- running a program prior to user logging in ?
-
is it possible in 2K or XP to run a program (in this instance, sol.exe
or windows solitaire for example) prior to the user logging in ? not
necessarily a script but an exe ?
i know under windows 9x/ME this was accomplished by running the
program as a service, how is it done under 2000 / XP ? if the same way
then how do i get the program installed as a service ? is it the only
way ?

- Can't Stop External Hard Drive
-
I have a Western Digital 250 gb external hard drive connected via USB port.
I am also running Outlook 2007, which I believe has a function
searchindexer.exe that searches all my drives to index the files on them.
I want to be able to unplug the drive without first turning off my computer.
But I get messages saying that the drive can't be stopped. It used to be
that if I stopped searchindexer.exe, I could stop the drive. But that's
stopped working.
Here are two questions:
1. What is preventing me from stopping the drive?;
2. What is the worst that can happen if I remove it without stopping it
first?
Thanks.
