- Set a permanent volume for a computer
-
What I want to do is lock the volume of the computer. Set it at, say, 80%
volume permanently.
I am aware you can hide the volume control from the system tray in the
control panel, but someone can go to the control panel and enable it again.
I know you can use the group policy editor to remove the control panel or
some of it's components. But those changes can be undone as well. Where
there's a will there's a way they say.
Someone can use a NT password reset cd, make a new admin account, use that
to get into gpedit.msc, enable control panel, so on and so forth down the
line. Yes, then my next step is to disable booting from cd, but you get the
picture, it's an endless line.
You see, I'm trying to manage a few hundred computers that are being used by
thousands of people. And there is always a handful of people who want to
mess things up. Then a less tech savvy person comes along and complains that
the sound on the computer is broken, when it is just muted.
So in the end, to reiterate, what I want is to set a permanent volume for
the computers, then go through down the line to try to prevent someone from
reverting the changes.
Now I tried Google, plenty of "free" software that I wouldn't touch with a
ten foot pole, and ironically, one person who has a problem- their volume is
locked to a set amount.
This tells me that there is a way to do this, I just don't know how, and my
google-fu isn't strong enough to get it.
If anyone out there can help me out with this, that would be terrific.

- Stop Windows Installer every time I start any Office Program
-
Office 2007 and Windows XP Pro up to date
Two days ago, I re-installed Visio 2003 on my laptop.
Ever since then, Windows Installer attempts (every time I start any Office Program) to install
Visio 2003. I then hit Cancel twice and the install stops.
Visio 2003 was installed and works properly.
How do I stop Windows Installer from looping the Visio 2003 Install?
TIA, any thoughts appreciated!!

- IE hanging while shutting down the computer
-
I am using windows XP with IE 6.0. When shutting down Iexplorer.exe is
hanging up and not letting the computer shut down. The irony part of this is,
I do shut everything down on my desktop. There are nothing on the taskbar to
indicate anything is open. I even did a control, alt & delete to make sure
everything is shut down and it still does the same thing. I have not added
any new hardward, or software. I do have windows set for automatic updates.
Could it be a bad update? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

- Login problems
-
I'm having some login problems on my laptop (WinXP Pro SP2). The exact
phenomenon varies. E.g. when I try to Switch User, it declares some parsing
error in line 903, and after 10 clicks on "Ok" it returns to the original
user (i.e. doesn't switch). Logging out altogether (from the first account)
gets rid of this particular phenomenon. Alternatively, from the login screen,
some of the users are inaccessible. Clicking on them and typing the password
results in a return to the login screen.

- Disappearing icons
-
My laptop has WinXP Pro SP2. After working correctly for about a week, icons
and some more graphical features, like button frames, disappear. If the icon
is for a link, then the small arrow that signifies it remains. Clicking on
the empty place of the icon works as if the icon was visible. For an
interesting feature, when I try to log out, the computer might show the
window saying that some application's state is being saved, but the
application's name in the header is invisible. Logging out and in again
solves the problem for that user, but not for others. Rebooting altogether
gets rid of the phenomenon.

- Computer hangs during file copying
-
Can anyone help? My WinXP Home hangs every once in a while. Usually there is
some file copying done when it happens. This phenomenon started after I once
ran some 5 or 6 7zip processes concurrently, which was too much for my
machine. Sometimes the computer hangs during 7zipping.
By "hangs" I mean that: the mouse works, but the taskbar buttons are dead. I
can select windows only if they are visible when the problem happens. And
then, some windows work and some don't. Windows Explorer windows are dead.
Bash windows (ntvdm) work as long as I can get to them. Firefox is dead, as
far as I recall.

- Restore Backup Files
-
Hi there
I have posted this question to the Windows XP Professional x64 Edition board
and the microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support board as suggested by
other users.
Some time ago I set up the Backup feature on Windows XP Pro so that my
laptop data got backed up daily to an external hard drive.
The laptop was recently stolen but thankfully, the external hard drive was
left behind and I have a Mac desktop computer with Bootcamp.
When I restore the backup.bkf file, the directories are all there, but there
is no data - not a Word, Excel, PDF or any other type of file to be found
yet the backup.bkf file is 119901kb in size.
Any suggestions and/or help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Cheers

- most of the programs on my computer won't boot. Help please.
-
I rebooted my computer this afternoon, and it reboots enough to show my
online connection, but nothing else on my boot screen. When I click on any
program or shortcut I get
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You many not
have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
The only way I can access my browser is by going to the control panel and
clicking on windows update.
I noticed in one of my attempts to get everything to boot, that the date
was saying 4/4/2010, but I went in boot with c prompt (or whatever it's
called) and did manage to change the date to the 1/1/2010, but that didn't
fix the problem at all.
I cannot access system restore, I get the message above. I look at the
control panel, but cannot click on anything without the above error message.
I can access my files and documents, and look at the thumbnails, but I
cannot actually open any of the files.
Is there any way this can be corrected without having to call in a pro? Is
there something I can type into the DOS commands on the recovery panel or
something.
The computer is about 5 years old, and it's running windows XP with sevice
pack 2.

- no ethernet, audio and video controller in device manager

i successfully deleted a number of trojans and malware using malwarebytes
(and i run xp home ed, sp2). but upon reboot, i no longer have an internet

looking in my device mgr, i see that under 'other devices,' the ethernet,
audio and video controllers all are marked with a yellow "!." i pinged using
cmd and verified that i definitely have an active dsl connection. i did a
triple uninstall for the 3 controllers, and upon reboot, i got the wizard
that asked to install the drivers, but upon doing so, i got the unable to
find driver for each one and the yellow "!" returned. my virus protection
mcafee indicated that i have no viruses, etc, and upon re-running
malwarebytes, it indicated the same. so, WTF!!?? i am thinking something in
my registry needs to be modified, but not sure. any helpful suggestions will
be greatly rewarded by the most positive karma possible. thanks!

see anything out of ordinary (no files with corrupted names and so
on). I even tried using fixmbr but that did not make the error go

- XP/Windows 7 dual boot (separate drives, XP primary)

- Windows 7 Icon Issue
-
First, I can't find ANY Windows 7 newsgroups. Where should I be looking?
Anyway, I have some very old (1993) Windows 3.x programs that I
installed under Windows 7 [32-bit]. [In fact, they are the ancient
"Microsoft Arcade" games ... Battlezone, Missile Command, Pole Position,
etc.]
And they run ok.
BUT .... in the start menu, the icons for the games are blank, or
perhaps more correctly stated, generic. And if I right-click and choose
"change icon" it tells me that the .exe file has no icon.
Now I have these same games installed on this same computer under
Windows XP (the machine is dual boot) and they run just fine and the
icons are correct. And the games themselves work ok, and run from the
[generic] icons in the start menu.
So what is going on? I've selected "Windows 95" and "Windows XP"
compatibility mode, "run as administrator", etc. and nothing seems to
fix the icons (and, again, the programs work just fine). Can anyone
explain why these programs would have no icon, or how I could fix it?
[As a last resort, since the machine is dual boot, and these programs
are installed also under XP (where their icons appear normally), is
there a way to "export" the icons to some "icon repository file" and
then manually select the icons from that file? Also, I tried pointing
the "change Icon" feature for the start menu shortcuts to the copy of
the programs in the WinXP partition; that made no difference, same result.
Thanks.

- 32 bit in 64 bit OS
-
Hello Group
I am planning to buy a high end carbon fibernotebook that is
classified as 64 bit system.
Would my current crop of 32 bit softwares would still run in it if I
transfer it from the 32 bit unit to this 64 bit toy?
Does the current version of windows have sufficient driver support for
the 64 bit system compared to its predecesors?
TIA
Roy
