- XP install drive missing following partition sizing
-
I used Partition Master (free Home Edition) to reduce the XP partition size
in a dual boot Windows 7 system.
Partition master could not complete the operation because it found "some
error" on the system following reboot.
XP still boots and Windows 7 still boots.
The only problem is that the XP drive is now missing when I boot in to
Windows 7 - I can no longer access the XP files from Windows 7. XP was
previously accessible as the "c:" drive from Windows 7 but now there is no
drive letter allocated to it and no sign of it in "My Computer".
Partition Master shows the XP install as "*" with no name but with all the
other attributes installed. The Partition Master file explorer shows that
all the files are still there.
How do I allocate a drive to XP from within Windows 7 so that Windows 7 can
see the XP files again?

- Windows XP Compatability with Older ATI (Legacy) Software from ATI
-
I am currently using an older machine a: ASUS P2B-VM slot 1 550Mhz with a
built in ATI 3D RAGE PRO AGP 2X (GT-C2U2) 8MB Ram Video Card running 384mb
RAM. I am running Windows XP Home Edition and have been for quite a while. I
have done very little upgrades, even though I know it definately needs alot.
I haven't had any problems with anything until recently. 2 or 3 years ago I
downloaded from the ATI website a new driver with a display console adapter
for adjustments. It worked fine in Win 2000 and in XP up until three weeks
ago. Now XP is trying to protect my CPU and dumping the memory saying the
Video Driver isn't correct, and windows is stating that the ATI software is
not upto Windows Standards, or something like that. It is good software from
the valid site of the creation company of the hardware. I have enclosed the
Addressess of the site I downloaded from, and the instructions enclosed to
install them.

Instructions sit
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/wxp-j5-30-1-b02.html
Is there a way to fix this? Can I tell Windows to leave it alone? Anyone Help?

- Phantom LightningSand.CFD file
-
My system keeps getting disk errors on a file :
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\Norton\SRTSP\LightningSand.CFD
(always the same index # 30)
I have no idea about where that file comes from. In fact, the file is
NOT there just before system shut down.... But it is still in error
before booting. It happens once or twice a week...
I now don't think the file has anything to do with Norton, but I do
not find any viruses with 5 different tools !!
Many messages on the web refer to that file as 'locked', which is kind
of normal as the directory where is goes is system locked.
Help !!

windows is crashing way too much. Too many errors in the Event Viewer.
Application errors events are 1000 and 1001. I have a new ASUS
motherboard, CPU and memory in this computer. The were hardly any with
the other mother board setup. I am running Windows XP 64.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290647#appliesto does not give me any
insight as to the problem.
Anyone know about these 1001 and 1001 events?
How can computer companies expect to sell computers with them crashing
all the time ?

- Scanner Driver Problems
-
Before posting here, I tried to make sure that I was not violating any rules,
having made a similar, unanswered post last Monday in the Widows XP Hardware
Forum. I want to know if there is a way to locate file corruption since the
Epson Technician to whom I spoke thought that the problem was in Windows. I
own a Perfection 1570 Photo Scanner whose Copy function does not work. An
error message appears, "A component of the Twain driver is missing." The
scanner printed to an Epson Stylus NX300 All-in-one. The two units worked
well together until I had to do a clean install of Windows and a System
Restore. If the problem is in Windows, where would it be? Is there a
default driver I could use in place of the manufacturer?

- Mailservers
-
Hi,
I've a home network using a couple of Vista machines but have an old XP
system that I want to put to good use. The wife is getting fed up of having
her email split between the two Vista machines so I was considering using
the XP system as a mail server, any suggestions about what would be a
decent, basic (doesn't need any fancy features) way to go? Would prefer
freeware but am happy to take a reasonable hit for the sake of peace.
Equally, is there another more elegant solution?
(BTW, I've both systems set up to download her mail but it seems a bit daft
keeping copies on both machines).
Cheers

- slipstreamed WinXP SP3 disk fails to install
-
Have made slipstreamed versions of a WinXP pro SP3 boot CD. 3 attepts from
instructions on this forum and on other on the web.
When trying to use them to repair my current XP SP3 installation the
installation allways get stuck. It says 34 min left and then restarts. It
continues with 39 min left down to 34 min and then a new restart, 39 min left
, and so on. No progress from 34 min. It also occasionaly warns for non
Microsoft approved software for installation?? the disk only contains
MS-code!! Have answered both yes or no but the result is the same.
Finally I have to breake the installation and recover the OS from a
previously saved image with Acronis True Image.
Have anyone a hint of how to get a functional WinXP pro SP3 boot CD from my
SP 2 CD ( OEM version). Microsoft does not provide SP3 disks.
Thanks in advance for any help.

- invalid/unauth product key
-
I recently purchased a tablet PC on ebay. In the item description, it stated
that "I just installed Windows TabletXP, but it needs to be activated." Fine
and dandy, valid COA on the back per auction images. Well. Upon attempting
activation, I was informed that I had an "invalid product key". I downloaded
and ran Magical Jellybean to get the PK from within the system itself, and it
gave me a completely *DIFFERENT* PK than the COA (and said it was running
Windows XP Pro). When I tried to activate with that, I was told that I had an
"unauthorized" PK. Tried the "activate via phone" option, and after reading
the eight-zillion-number string off to Friendly Computer Lady, I was told it
was invalid, and given the steps to change the PK, which, of course,
basically just takes you back the the beginning again. I have read that
somewhere in the depths of that call, I can get to a real person, and they
should be able to activate for me. Is this true, or is there some other
option, or do I need to sic Paypal on this guy's keister?

- Windows installer keeps popping up.
-
(moved from office.misc newsgroup) (also moved updates I found)
WinXP, Office 2k(pro). all updates
Tried to open Word this morning and get this error msg. This lead me to try
and open other Office products with no luck except Publisher.
(Windows Installer)
"The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the
source exists and you can access it."
This is a system that has worked fine for 4+ years.
Can't open Excel, Access, Outlook, Powerpoint using Program- Word, etc.or
Frontpage but I can open Publisher!!
When I inserted O2k disk it doesn't auto open so I go to setup.exe and get
the same error msg. as above.
I've also tried to "Detect and repair" but get error msg "The installation
for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that
you can acces it." See update #2 below..
Thanks
update 1: When I open OLE I get a screen that states Window Installer-
"preparing to install". The only option I have is to "cancel" but it does
finally go away on it's own.
update 2: If I go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office I can open
Word,
Excel, etc. and create another shortcut on desktop to open program but I
still can't use "Detect and Repair".
Hope this isn't too confussing.

the system boots on d:, does this matter?)

- OEM and the boot-disk only on one computer?
-
First: The Windows XP I have is from an OEM, it came with a boot dvd since it
was bought from Future Shop/Best Buy, no windows XP dvd and a key.
I was reading on a web-site article that if I install too much hardware at
once my system has to re-connect to microsofts web-site or call them and
confirm that this is still the same computer.
I also read if I flashed the BIOS and it is not from the manufacturer, my
version of XP won't work, since it is "not credible" or something in
microsofts eyes. If it's true I have to re-connect to the microsoft web-site
or call them: apparently my XP won't work at all.
Does anyone know anything about this? Or where I can get more information?

- How to deal with task bar
-
I am using XP SP3, I am trying to look at a series of .mov files in a
folder, one file at a time.
When I double click on one of the .mov files, it quite naturally
executes Quicktime V7.0 to 'play' the .mov, since that is the default
for .mov files.
What I don't like is that Quicktime always opens to play the .mov with
its 'play' button (and its other controls too) hidden behind the task
bar at the bottom of the screen.
I can manually shrink Quicktime's window so as to expose the play
button, but how can I make Quicktime come up automatically on top of
the task bar, so's I can see the quicktime controls?
This may be a dumb question, and if so, I am sorry. But I really
would like to know.
Anyone?

- BSOD After WinXP Install
-
I have a new HP 311-1000NR netbook, which came with WinXP Home
in english installed. I have been trying to re-install WinXP in
spanish from
known working CD. The install fprmats the disk and proceeds through
two
install phases/reboots, apparently correctly. But when rebooting the
third time into what would notmally be the configuration phase, the
boot stalls at the WinXP slider screen, then does BSOD, reboots,
repeats indefinitely.
Attempt to boot into safe mode - same result - partial boot, BSOD,
reboot. In each case after BSOD the reboot starts so fast I can't get
any error codes off the BSOD.
This system uses nVidia nForce/ION, and I have slipstreamed
what I believe to be correct drivers into the install CD using
nLite, and it does recognize the nVidia SATA controller/disk
on which to install. Nevertheless, my guess would be I have
some kind of driver issue.
So my first question is how do I *diagnose* what's the problem?
For example, is there a log I could access to look at what's been
happening? Recommendations and/or pointers to diagnostic
methods much appreciated.

- Framework 3.5 Upgrade Problem
-
I have Windows XP Home SP2.
I did a Windows Update and it wanted me to install Framework 3.5 SP1
before doing any other updates.
On the first Restart after installation, it said there was a problem
with my logon profile (possibly corrupt), and it logged me on with a
temporary profile. The desktop was completely different from my
usual desktop. I restarted again and didn't have a problem with my
profile. I saw my usual desktop.
However, every time right after logging in, I also saw a Windows
Installer dialog saying that the feature I was trying to install was
not available and to insert the "Update Manager" disk and click OK. I
clicked Cancel several times before the dialog would go away.
I tried various things to eliminate the dialog, but nothing worked.
Sometimes if I stayed in the Windows session for more than a few
minutes, it would come back, and again I'd have to click Cancel
multiple times to eliminate it.
I then tried "repairing" 3.5 SP1, which supposedly put it back to its
"original state," whatever that was. That didn't help.
I then removed 3.5 entirely. I didn't realize, though, that MS had
also installed 3.0 as part of going to 3.5 (apparently I had been at
2.0). So, I hadn't removed 3.0, just 3.5. In any event, the Windows
Installer dialog wouldn't go away.
Finally, I did a Restore back to just before I installed 3.5. That
got rid of 3.0 and got rid of the Windows Installer dialog. I believe
I am back to 2.0 now.
I have looked all over for a problem similar to mine. I found two
instances. In one, the recommendation was to do some very
time-consuming complicated things, including removing Framework
completely. Far too much work. I'd rather just stay with 2.0. I
should have never upgraded in the first place.
The second was easier. They just said to remove ISUSPM from the
System Configuration Utility. The person reporting the problem said
that worked.
Even assuming I could just uncheck ISUSPM and the problem would have
gone away, what was causing InstallShield to think something was
amiss? (I don't particularly feel like reinstalling 3.5. It took a
VERY long time to do.)
Thanks for any help.

- Can't install Etherent driver
-
A virus infection has required me to re-install Windows XP onto my ACER 5630
laptop.
I have re-installed all the drivers with the exception of the Ethernet LAN
driver.
It is a Broadcom 5787 Ethernet port, and when I download the drivers form
either the Acer website, or the Broadcom website all I get is a zip file with
the following three files:
b57win32.cat
b57win32.inf
b57win32.sys
as there is no setup.exe type file I tried to install using Device manager,
but it fails to install the driver, even if I point the location for the
driver to the folder where I have extracted the files.
Subsequent checking on the Broadcom website reveals that it's not possible
to install the driver in this way, but doesn't give any clue as to how it
should be done!
If anyone out there has had this problem and solved it you're gonna make a
very frustrated man very happy!

- Firefox works but I.E. and Chrome do not
-
I have windows XP on my laptop and I have 3 browsers installed. They are
Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. Firefox is my browser of
choice, the one I use the most frequent. Recently I tried to get on Chrome
and I was not able to. Then I tried IE and had the same problem. Both
browsers give me the same message, "webpage not available". The problem is
obviously not my connection, as Firefox is still working. I mentioned this
problem on Facebook & was told by someone that I should not have more than
two browsers? Other research I have come across says that it does not matter,
I can have as many browsers as I choose. Does it really matter if I have
more than two? I used to use only IE but it kept crashing on me, so I added
the other two "just in case". I recently had a Mal ware problem that I was
able to get rid of. Am wondering if this browser problem may have been
caused by that? Not sure when problem started as I haven't tried to get on
Chrome or IE in quite awhile. Anybody have any suggestions on what the
problem may be and how to correct it? Plain English please. Heavy tech talk
sometimes confuses me. lol

- Help - Vanishing Toolbar - how to revive?
-
Have been using XP Pro op system on a desktop for several years and updating as usual, but recently
having this unusual problem of loosing the screen 'Toolbar', which of course have the 'Start' button
and all other screen icons. As I loose the Toolbar, I can still use the mouse and 'refresh' the
screen, but the Toolbar does not reappear anymore. Any idea what causes this and how to fix it?
Usually this happens only when the PC is left 'on' for some time without touching the mouse. To
re-boot the PC, I have to turn off the power switch. 'Control-Alt-Delete' or the Task Manager does
not work anymore. Appreciate any suggestions.

- Can hear line-in but can't record it
-
I am having trouble recording a cassette player onto XP.
(1) I play a cassette recorder into my PC's line-in and I can hear it
clearly in the speakers.
(2) I select line-in on XP's recording control (SNDVOL32.EXE).
(3) However when I press the record button on Audacity, there is no audio
signal displayed on the graph.
I also tried XP's Sound recorder (SNDREC32.EXE) and Windows Media Player.
Can you advise?

- Access denied error with changing startup services in msconfig
-
I have experienced a new problem in all 9 computers I manage at work and at
home. In the last several weeks, every time I run MSCONFIG and try to change
a startup service (Startup tab, check or uncheck a service), I get the error
dialog "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a
service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the
specified changes." The service check box does change however after closing
the error message. When I hit "Apply" to close out MSCONFIG, the same error
message appears, but the changes go through anyway. This occurs despite being
logged on as an administrator. I have tried logging on as Administrator in
Safe Mode, the same thing happens. This wouldn't be so bad, except I also get
the same error when downloading and running files with active content on the
internet, e.g. Adobe Update Manager. It won't let me run the update (e.g.
Adobe Reader) after download and displays an error that I have to be logged
in using an administrator account to run the script.
I have noticed this on nine different computers. The symptom started about
two weeks ago. Was this created by a faulty Windows Update fix? Is anyone
else experiencing this? How do I fix it?
Running Windows XP Pro sp3 with all the latest updates. I am using Windows
XP security (NOT simple file sharing). As a user, I am an administrator, and
I have checked, I am in the Administrator Group. My user and Administrators
have Permission and Security for all files and folders on all drives, and are
the owners of all objects.
Any suggestions?

- Four minute WinXP boot up
-
It takes about 4 minutes for my Compaq V2000 laptop to boot-up using WinXP
Home with SP3. NORMAL boot-up invokes 58 processes, 107 services, 489
modules, 215 drivers , 25 startup and 29 IP connections. SAFE MODE boot-up
invokes 12 processes, 107 services, 158 modules, 215 drivers, 25 startup and
0 IP connections. I am certain that many of the normal boot-up items are
loaded for programs that I scarcely use. How do I figure out which of the
normal boot up items is really needed and which are not needed? If I turn
off a truely needed program in the Start Up folder can I do damage to my PC?

- Making the default printer, the true default
-
I have an HP that is set in XP as the default printer; I also often
save a doc as a PDF, which means using the print function and
selecting CutePDF as my "printer."
Is there any way of getting XP to recognize the HP as my default
printer every time? I find that after selecting CutePDF to "print" a
page (in reality, it doesn't print, but just gets saved as a PDF),
that the next time I do a quick print in MS Word, that Windows thinks
I want to save as PDF again, and I have to click out of that dialog
and find the HP printer. How can I get Windows to always think that I
want to print to my HP, unless I explicitly tell it otherwise for each
job?

- Windows Pagefile Questions.
-
Hello all. I have a few questions regarding Swapfiles. First, however here
is my configuration:
1) Windows XP Pro (SP3), 3.0 GHZ AMD CPU,
2) 1GB Ram,
3) 3 Hard Drives:
Drive C (100GB Programs only - no data),
Drive d (250GB IDE 7200 RPM) data and app installation points, Web
and SQL Data,
Drive E (500 GB Sata 7200 RPM) Data, SQL Log files and edited
Video Files,
4) Swapfiles:
Drive C: 64mb, dump file only,
Drive D: 1.5 GB
Drive E: 1.5 GB
So here are my queries:
1) Does Windows use the swapfile on a particular drive based on editing
(data storage, copy etc). For example, if I am editing say a video file on
drive D, will Windows use the Swapfile on that drive to store page fault
data? This would seem to be rather foolish as the data is being edited on
the same drive as that swapfile.
2) How can I tell Windows to use the Swapfile on a particular drive (say
Drive E:) first or can one?
3) Is there a better way to configure the pagefiles?
I ask these questions, because I've noticed at several points during the day
that the disk drive light flashes like a banshee on cocaine. Eventually
(typically after about a minute or so) it settles down. This happens
primarily when I edit video files. I understand an realize that editing
video files uses a lot of ram and swapfile, so I don't think we need to beat
that to death. I've even upped ram to 2BG - but the same thing happens. The
same occurs on a different system (similar in config, except it has dual
Pentiums with 4 2 gb ram). So it seems that Windows is going to use the
swapfile anyway (which of course we all know).
I realize that I can configure Perfom to trap and record all this activity,
but what is the reality of that data being accurate? I mean, Perfmon will of
course require ram (and swapfile) so would those pieces of data (in
particular evaluating the Deltas) be that accurate.
So I rambled on, just want to be as complete as I can.
Thanks.
