- Wireless network
-
I don't know if this is the appropriate place to ask this question, but here
goes.
I have had a wireless network in my home for several years. Now a second
security enabled wireless network has appeared. It shows a signal strength
of 2 out of 5 bars. I live in a rural location with only two neighbors
within a quarter of a mile. Neither of them have computers, much less
wireless networks. Is there any way I can find information about the new
network?

- Double My Documents
-
Windows XP SP3
My drive D has a folder Ersoy Documents and Asaf Documents
When I go to Start > My Document I get "Ersoy Document". This is how I set
it up.
If I go to My Computer in addition to all the drives and Shared Documents
folder I also have a folder "Ersoy's Documents". It's contents are identical
to My Documents/Ersoy Documents. I can not delete the folder. If I delete
any file from it, the file is also deteted from My Documents.
If I hover the mouse over it I see the following: "Contains files and
folders shared between the users of this computer". I do not have any
folders and drives which are shared.
Obviously, it is an image of My Documents folder but how can I get rid of
it, and what is its use?

- Can you please help me?
-
I was just wondering if you might be able to help me with something.
Hopefully so. I am needing some recovery CD's for my computer that somehow
got lost and I called the manufacturer of the computer and they said they no
longer make them for this computer to buy or sell to me, and they said that
Microsoft might be able to sell me some for it or at least tell me how to get
some for it, so based on that, can you please tell me where I might be able
to get some online perhaps, because I donâ??t know of anybody else out there
that would have the discs that I need to recover it. All help would be gladly
accepted and appreciated very very much in this case as I need them very very
badly. Thank you!!!

- IE and Firefox Won't Open
-
My friend's WinXp computer, SP3, 2 GB RAM, Norton AV is in a state where
neither Firefox nor IE7 will open. However, Google Chrome works fine to get
to the internet. This all started while updating Firefox from Ver 3.5.8 to
Ver 3.6. At the restart now or later prompt-I chose later. That was it!
After that I couldn't open either Firefox or IE not matter what I tried.
So far I've uninstalled Firefox using Add/Remove then did a System Restore
in Safe mode (which restored correctly) as well as in Normal mode (which
would not do the restore). After the Safe Mode Restore I was (momentarily)
able to open IE and download Firefox Ver 3.6. I seemed to install just fine
but clicking the desktop icon did nothing. I tried disabling all of Norton's
apps (AV, antispyware, etc..,) and then re-installing Firefox to no avail.
I tried going the the actual Firefox Ver 3.6 application file in My Programs
and creating a new shortcut from the App file. None of that worked. Overall
system response time seems just fine so I don't suspect Malware or Spyware
but I'm not sure. Haven't had a chance to install and run MBAM or SAS yet
but I will.
I'm out of ideas. I tried something I've done before many times and all it
did was disable IE and Firefox.
Every time I do a restart I get a message that Firefox is trying to shut
down, leading me to believe it's running in the background or was in the
process of trying to open up. It appears to be trying to shut it down but
ends up failing so I have to force it off with an `End Task'. Task Manager
shows nothing running.
I can try uninstalling Firefox 3.6 using REVO uninstaller and then try to
re-install a fresh copy of Firefox Ver 3.6. I could also install CCleaner (I
have it on a flash drive) and seeing if cleaning up Temp Internet files
works. Does anyone think Norton could be hosing something up? I hate that
*&^%((((##@@ program but I'm loath to uninstall Norton since the machine
owner bought his copy online and downloaded it so we may never be able to
get it re-installed.
Another possible factor: This machine has 2 user profiles, with Firefox
installed in both. Maybe the issues with Firefox in one profile is screwing
up the firefox application in the other profile. But I'd be the first one to
admit that I know exactly squat about User profiles and how they work.
Anyone have any ideas how to get these 2 browsers working again? If I don't
come up with any solutions I may have to call Mozilla and get some phone
support. Thanks in advance......Paul C.

- Backup program question
-
My critical files are on my XP computer. For many years I have used 3rd
party backup programs to backup files to an external drive. I also keep a
portable drive in our safe deposit box. With all of the 3rd party backup
utilities available on the market today, I'm concerned that if I ever had to
perform a disaster recovery I might have trouble obtaining a copy of the
software I use.
My question is - what is wrong with using the universal XP backup program?
I guess I really don't know why I opted against it in the first place. It's
readily available and appears to do a good job. My only concern would be
reconciling the latest version of a file from the full and differential
backups in the event of a file restore. I think I'd really like to use the
XP backup. Any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated.

One additional point. If you disable Windows Search there is a very
good replacement application for search, Called "Everything". You
can get a copy at this location:

- How to use Paint?
-
I have Win XP SP3 and the version of the Paint that comes with it (Programs
> Accessories).
Is this the correct NG to ask questions about Paint? If not, what then?
My question....
I use ctrl-PrintScreen to capture the display. Then I run Paint and paste
the image. To copy a subset of the image, I use the box Select tool to
outline the area, then press ctrl-C and ctrl-V.
At that point, I have trouble "selecting" the two different objects: the
original PrintScreen image and the subset I just pasted. By "select", I do
not mean the box Select tool. I mean outlining the object so that I can
move, resize and delete it.
How do I get into that kind of selection mode again? How do I "select" each
object individually?
Paint Help says: "To turn off the selection box, click outside the box". I
have tried clicking all over, to no avail.

when it used to display:

Anyone advise where the taskbar clock format can be configured?

- How to lock Quick Launch? (Prevent changes)
-
This question relates to Win XP SP3.
Is there any way to lock the Quick Launch area of the taskbar so that it
cannot be changed except by very purposeful means?
When my mother should click on a Quick Launch icon, she has the bad habit of
continuing to hold down the mouse button, resulting in dragging the icon off
the Quick Launch area and creating a shortcut on the Desktop.
There is no way to train her. She is elderly. She is mostly computer
illiterate. The difference between click-and-release v. click-and-hold
continues to elude her.
I had always mistakenly thought that Lock Taskbar guarded against this. I
finally RTFM.

- Creating font groups

Some of my font families appear as single entries in the drop down font list

How do I group font families so that they appear as only one entry in the

- Need help removing "Virus Protector"
-
My laptop has been taken over by some infection/virus/malware called "Virus
Protector". Upon booting a pop up appears counting and listing infections.
Have visited other forums, read directions on how to remove "Virus
Protector" scumware using Malwarebytes. Believe me, I want to follow the
directions fully but I am not able to get beyond the initial pop up screen of
Virus Protector that happens on each reboot. There is no control of my
computer available, all I can do is watch the infections pile up like mad!
I am using a Toshiba Qosmio running Windows XP
Booting into normal mode is no good.
Booting into safe mode is no good.
Booting into safe with networking mode is no good.
I did manage to boot into Safe with DOS prompt....cmd.exe screen that has
C:\Documents and Settings\DavidF>
This is hopeful, yes? What do I have to type in to get to a "restore point"?
I read somewhere that going to an earlier point in time when things where
operational would cure this trouble...or at least allow me access to my
computer to run some malware programs.
This program/virus or whatever it is seems to have taken over my computer
and sits there telling me how many infections I have while they, the
infections, compound exponentially.
Thanks in advance,
David

- command line - add new local printer port
-
How do I do this?
I need to set up some command line scripts to install printers for
Ghostscript. I'm tired of doing it manually on every machine. For my needs I
need a local port called "C:\Program Files\gs\output\tfile.ps" Please don't
bother me with a bunch of "why"s. It's what I need for this.
The following runs great if the port already exists.
rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /if /f "C:\Program
Files\gs\gs8.64\lib\ghostpdf.inf" /r "c:\Program Files\gs\output\tfile.ps"
/m "Ghostscript PDF" /b "Ghostscript PS"
But if not, then it generates an error. I need to know how to add a new
local port. Can anyone help?
I also need to know how to set the new printer so it prints directly to the
printer. There's a radio button for this in the new printer wizard but no
switch for it that I can see in rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry
Thanks,

- CD KEY.
-
We have a machine that experienced a sever hard disk crash, which we
replaced.
Our CD is damaged, so we have rebuilt it using a friends CD.
Got everything installed (drivers, applications etc) and the system is now
ready for activation.
We used our key to try to active it. It doesn't work. We don't want to use
his key as that would limit his re-activation.
Besides we are of the type that don't believe in piracy, hacking or other
related garbage. We are intent on using a valid activation key.
We only have two days left before it becomes inaccessible - which would be
another rebuild, but that's the way it is.
We have verified the key (that is on the box with our cd) and it is correct.
The same key is also on our invoice, so we know it is correct.
We have gone to several vendors for assistance, but of course they
suggest4ed that we move up to Vista or Windows 7 as this is our only option!
We can't afford to upgrade to a new system that supports Windows 7 (or
Vista), so we have to keep this for awhile. And actually, we like the way
our system was before the hard disk crash.
Why won't our key work with his CD (it's a Generic copy, not OEM).
Thanks.

- Canon IR 7105 Print Preferences on XP Pro
-
Hello All,
We have three Canon IR 7105 Copiers on a network (copier1, copier2, and
copier3), no server. SBS 2003 Premium which the computers sync to is at a
remote location but the computers here print directly to the copiers onsite.
While users can see all three copiers, the issue is that users do not see
all print preferences on all three. Some users see all print preferences for
copier1 only, some see all print preferences for copier2 only, while some
users only see all print preferences for copier3 only. The print options some
users do not see is the staple option. Users are able to use the staple
feature on at least one of the copiers but not all. The copier vendor has
confirmed that the copiers are well configured and not the problem. Logically
they are not eh problem because then users should not selectively see any of
the copiers at all if they are the problem.
Does anyone have an idea what the issue could be here or what can be
adjusted for users to see all option for all copiers.
Thanx.

- Problem joining domain
-
Hello,
I am trying to set up a new laptop and can't join the network domain. This
is Win7 downgraded to WinXP Pro. I don't know if that is significant, but
thought I'd mention it.
Going through the Network Identification wizard, I am asked for the
Username, Password, and Domain Name. It defaults to Administrator, do I
plug in the Network Administrator Password and Network Domain. The next
message box says that Windows can't find a user account for the domain. On
the same message box it asks for a computer name and domain. The new
computer name is there so I type the domain name and next. Then a
Authentication box comes up, so I enter my username, password, and the
domain. Then I get a message that I could not join the domain because of
multiple connections to a server or shared resource by same user. I logged
off on my machine and tried again but failed.
I called our network guy who said I was doing it the way he would and
couldn't understand the problem. If he were here, I'm sure he'd figure it
out, but it is unusual and I need to get this machine up.
Thanks for you help and God Bless,

messenger/windows live/message and quickly pressed enter... (I was also very
busy that day, with chatting and helping people out... it was kinda
hectic...)
So in all that hectic I made a mistake... but mostly because of the pop-up
which "stole the focus from what I was trying to do/accomplish (which was
trying to login securely)".
The moral of the story and the tip for the future how this could have been
prevented by the operating system/software:
"Password fields should not be allowed to be "interrupted"".
Anyway... as soon as I realized what happened... I immediatly logged in to
my account, and changed my password before anybody could figure out what the
hell I was babling about ;) :)
It kinda sux... because now I am stuck with a password that I didn't really
want :)
So that's why I am kinda telling this story... and it could also some day
have some nasty consequences for other people... (<-if it isn't fixed...)
for example: people who can't change the password (so fast or not at all)
once it gets revealed...
Bye,
Skybuck.

- TWAIN error (TWCC_BUMMER)
-
Hello,
I'm having a strange problem that has come up on a Windows XP Home
with SP2. It has a TWAIN scanner connected to USB. It comes up with
a TWAIN error (General failure. Source immediately unloaded.) This
error happens when the twain scanning applet is called from another
program. If I run the program at the command line it functions
perfectly. Nothing that I know of has been changed on the computer. I
tried System Restore to go back a few days, but that didn't fix the
problem. It seems to be a Windows issue with the way external
programs are run and the resources available to them.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall the scanner driver, but that didn't
seem to help.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Mike

- SOLUTION: copy/move selected shortcut targets to a destination you
-
Hi All,
I was searching all over in relation to this question. I would have
added some links to older relevant threads that I found, but there is
a 60 day limit.
Although the below tags link to a member-site (popular), this is
really not meant to come across as advertising.. I had been looking
for some time into this similar issue, and information on the net
seems not only spotty and incomplete, but the solution is very
elusive... and it shouldn't be.
What's really tough to find is way to select objects at random, say by
control-clicking any files and shortcuts in a folder, and then
selectively copy or move the files and shortcut targets (not the
shortcuts themselves) ...whenever and wherever you wish to do this,
say, via a context-menu you set up.
Most scripts require coding the paths and such ahead of time and
launching the script, or gathering a selection of paths into a batch,
etc...
...but I wanted more freedom, and I wanted it in the context menu.
***This is doable.
The following links demonstrate some alternatives using simple windows
scripting methods.
The first link discusses the technical issues (the challenges and what
you really can and cannot do) in detail, as well as providing a very
simple approach to how this can be handled. I am not posting that all
here because due to its detail its a bit lengthy (yes, I wrote it).
I post all this here in the spirit of seeding the best answers I could
find in places where seekers -like myself- may find them ...places I
arrived at before in search of answers ;^)

- Cannot organize Favorites; error message
-
When I click on 'organize favorites' below 'add to favorites', I get this
error message:
Windows Internet Explorer
Script Error
Error:Automation Server can't create object
Page:favorites.htm?folder=
Call Stack:
- box with OK -
While this is displayed, the term 'loading' is on the otherwise blank page
(under the headers), just scrolling... it never goes anywhere. Can't navigate
away from the page; must completely close the browser page.
My hard drive is almost full & I'd really like to be able to clean out a lot
of dead links on my list. This has been an issue for several months.
Thank you for any anticipated help.

- Folder & File Name Fonts
-
I don't know if this is anything important, but I thought I would ask.
About two weeks ago the font color of the file and folder names changed from
black to blue. This did not happen on all files and folders, it seems to be
random, but it happened to more than a few. Is this something I need to
worry about? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Virus
-
We've encountered a virus on one of our windows xp professional machines. It
locks the computer up at random intervals. We've cleaned the computer using
multiple different anti-viruses which fixes the problem for a time, however
the virus always comes back within a day. We've used anti-rootkits and found
nothing as well.
It also seems to only lock the computer up if it is connected with the
ethernet cable.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

- Order of partitions in XP setup menu
-
The last time I reinstalled XP, Windows gave me the choice of
partitions to install into. Because I had previously divided my two
partitions (one for Windows and programs, the other for documents)
equally, I wasn't entirely sure which to install to, and cancelled out
of the installation. No big problem, since I double-checked, then
started the reintall again.
Next time this happens, I'm wondering--is there an order in which the
two partitions will appear? Does the one on the top refer to the
partition with the earliest letter (as in, partition C will always
appear right before partition D)? Or is it based on size? Or is it
based on...

- repair windows xp from a secondary instance of windows?
-
Ok I hope that I am explaining this correctly:
I had an issue with windows xp, and I wanted to repair it, but for
some reason my disc (dont ask why) didnt give me a choice of repairing
the windows installation..so I just installed another copy (now c:
\windows.1 lets say) I dont want to go through the hassle of fixing
everything, reinstalling my shortcuts, etc....I just want to be able
to repair my ORIGINAL windows installation c:\windows. Is there a
way, from the windows.1 installation, to repair the c:\windows
installation? like doing the sfc /scanow but to scan the original
windows installation?

- Lost all my contacts by virus....
-
I found out this morning that my PC sent out about 50 e-mails from my
contacts list with a spam message. My virus checker hasn't found
anything (AVG). I did a system restore and went back a few days.
Problem now is that my wireless connection doesn't work now and I'm
doing this mail using a cable connection to the router. I can find
most of my contacts again but should I be worried that my PC has been
'taken over'? Could this virus? have taken all my IP address info? I
have tried all the usual things to restore my wireless connection -
like 'repair' but to no avail. Any ideas how I can get it back please?

The other PC can browse the path \\ip-address but no folder or printer

That WinXP has been infected before but now fixed.
However, the file sharing still not work.
Any advise about the issue?

- Can't add or open additional desktop backgrounds
-
If I browse to an I would like to use for a desktop image it will not
display in the Display Properties dialog box nor will it display on the
desktop.
I have even tried by coping pictures into the C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper,
which I have done before, for use as a desktop background.
Prior to reloading this particular machine I was able to use any image I
wanted to.
Can anyone give tips on what might be wrong.
The reload was with an original XP SP3 disk.
Perplexed!!
