  • xp won't boot up and need to format new hard drive to start over
    • I had to install a new hard drive to my notebook. while attempting to install windows xp professional on to the new drive - it did not nstall properly (my fault as i attempted a second time and used the same partition which really screwed things up) so now when i try to boot up - it goes to the windows loading screen for a few seconds and then the screen goes black and nothing. No matter how i try to get it to recognize the xp install disk in the dvd drive - nada. so my question is this. how do reformat the hard drive - so i can start fresh and load in windows xp. I tried to change the boot order, put in safe mode, debugging - nothing works. if someone could tell me how to wipe out the new drive and start fresh, i would appreciate it very much

  • Windows XP keeps restarting
    • My Windows XP computer shutdown on its own and now it keeps restarting. I can start it in safe mode and have run a virus scan using AVG in safe mode and nothing was found although it was unable to scan some files in the Crypto subdirectory and other security files as it said they were in use. I was going to attempt a Windows XP repair. However my original product disk is SP2 and I have upgraded to SP3. Can I still do a repair from my product disk or do I need an SP3 disk? If I need an SP3 disk can I use any SP3 disk? Do I have to uninstall IE7 before I do this? Is there anything else I can attempt before a repaid Also if the repair does not work, basically I have the same question for a re-install. Do I re-install from the original disk and then download the upgrade to SP3?

If you mistpye the ctrl+alt+del on XP Pro, there is a small window with a video(animated gif??) that will pop up and show you how to type it. I would like to use that for training purposes, but cannot find it anywhere on my system. Any help would be appreciated.

  • What does the red triangle mean over drive maps in preferances server 2008?
    • Hello... I have a customer with SBS 2008 Standard. I have setup DRIVE MAPS in the Group Policy Mangement Editor under User Preferances. My question is, what does the red triangle mean over drive maps in preferances server 2008? There is a little red triangle over the Drive ICON to the left of the Drive Letter I setup. Anyone have any ideas what that means? I am concerned because it is RED like warning or an error...? • Font size question
    • sorry, this question is not Windows XP related, but about POS printer: when in specification noted, that POS printer has two fonts: Font A is 12x24 dots, Font B is 9x17 dots (Dot = 0.123 mm): does this mean font width x height, or this mean height of lowercase and uppercase symbols? (12 and 24) thanks.

  • CDFS on USB mass storage device
    • Hi experts, i want to make a USB mass storage device(pen drive) as a read only file system like CDFS to protect the data from end users. i create a iso image and using linux DD command, i wrote sector by sector of the iso image to USB mass storage device. if i insert this USB pen drive to linux pc, it is showing the entire disk as a read only and i am able to access the files and exe as read only. but if i insert the same USB pen drive in windows XP, it is asking for formating the device. it is not detecting the CDFS file system resides inside the USB mass storage device (Pen drive) Is there any way to mount the USB pendrive as CDFS file system in windows XP. -- vinoth.R http://vinoth-vinothblog.blogspot.com http://www.e-consystems.com

  • Virus corrupted Iexplorer??
    • I had a problem with a virus last week, but the virus checker appears to have resolved it. The virus managed to do some damage - namely knocking out the internet connection and various programs. I've managed to resolve most of the issues and have broadband connection again - my outlook works and so does my instant messenger. However, iexplorer doesn't connect and nor does the anti-virus or anti-spyware. I tried loading another web browser, but with no luck. Any sugggestions as to what's happened and how I can get back connectivity for iexploer and the virus checker? Peter

  • Installing retail version over oem okay?
    • Can I install retail version of xp over top of an existing oem version of XP without losing my data, documents and programs okay? If so will I encounter any problems at all? I assume that I don't select the initial 'r' for repair option but chose to install and then select the repair option when it's found the existing install? I'm doing the over-install because I cannot resolve the boot-up loop its got into (I get the safe mode and last good..options but selecting any of them just leads to a reboot to the same screen) by using various commands under the recovery console. • While using Diskeeper, I got the error message: "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in. It is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC." The files should be sorted in descending date created order with the oldest files on top. This works when one file type is involved. However, when the "Date Created" column is clicked, with multiple files in the search results; it does not sort correctly in descending or ascending order. • New install - no connection
    • Someone in my area has called me and asked for help. He had a hard drive crash so he put in a new drive and reinstalled Media Center Edition. He accesses the internet through DSL and a router. Another computer is also plugged into the router and is working fine. On this computer, he has no internet access. Under the "status" tab it says "connected" but under the support tab the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway lines are all empty. If he unplugs the ethernet cable, nothing changes. It still says it is connected. Also, the icon in the tray that should appear with the red X and the "network cable unplugged" message does not appear. He was having no problems before the crash. This is something that I've never experienced before. If it sounds familiar to anyone, plese clue me in as to what might be going on! The LAN is built in. -- --- Long live Fat32! ---

  • Formating Large (200+GB) FAT32 Volumes Appears to Generate Errors
    • There are several Knowledge Base articles concerning FAT32 on Windows XP, particularly 314463 and 310525. The Disk Manager will not format a partition as FAT32. Using the HELP text, the appropriate FORMAT command would appear to be: FORMAT <deviceletter>:/FS:FAT32/V:XXX/A=64K/Q This gives the following error message: "This volume is too big for FAT32." Changing the cluster size to 128K (/A:128K), gives the following error message: " The specified cluster size is too big for FAT." Is this a known problem? The KB articles imply that the FAT32 maximum volume size is in the TB range. - Bob Gezelter, http://www.rlgsc.com

Is there a way to stop this behaviour? Thanks you.

  • Noob error: IE and JavaScript?
    • I'm a complete noob at web pages, HTML, and JavaScript. I put JavaScript code in the web page I'm trying to build, saved it, and opened in IE to see it run. I also put in a <NOSCRIPT> message. The <NOSCRIPT> messge went away, but the JS still wouldn't run. I went through my IE settings (XP Pro, IE 7): everything with Java is enabled. What am I missing? Ed

  • How should I install IE 8 instead of IE 6?
    • To recover my OS I had to reinstall Windows XP in the Repair mode. After that, the OS and all programs are working properly, but instead of IE 8 I have IE 6 - this version of IE is available from my installation CD. Now I want to install IE 8, but I cannot do that. I tried to install the IE 8, but received a message that installation fails. And after this I received two messages: "Microsoft Feeds Synchronization has encountered a problem and needs to close" and "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". How should I install IE 8 instead of IE 6?

  • Google Earth, Haiti, and my computer
    • I hope you can help me. I installed Google Earth, bought a "new" (to me) video card to make it work, and I still can't go closer than 3200 feet or more and still have the picture in focus. I can get much closer than that with maps.google.com . At least I think so. I checked again and I'm not sure. Has anyone else had this? I have winXP SP3, with 1 gig memory, 800 MHz, and an ATI Radeon 7000 series video card with 64 megs of memory. A) Don't they use the same photographs? B) I'm not trying to do anything fancy, just zoom closer. C) Someone on the tv said the damage was so great in Haiti, one could see it with Google Earth. Weren't the pictures taken months or years ago? D) I don't think so but maybe she said you could see evidence of the fault line, but like I say, I can't focus well. With maps.google.com everything is clear even at the closest zoom, when the runway at the Port-au-Prince airport is 1 inch wide on a 17" monitor Is there something wrong with my computer set-up? Thanks.

  • Thumbnails on Network Drives
    • I'm using XP Pro, SP3. I used to keep my photos on a USB external drive. Everytime I opened folders on that drive the thumbnails appeared instantaneously. I moved my photos to a network drive mass storage device, using RAID1. Now, when I open a folder, the thumbnails have not been retained and need to be rebuilt - which in my case (hundreds of photos, in TIFF format) literally takes hours for some folders. The file 'thumbs.db' is present, however I believe that they were copied over from the USB Drive. When I create a new folder and place a photo into it, a new 'thumbs.db' is not created. Is there anyway to force the retention of the thumbnail information on a network drive, similar to a USB External Drive, or Local Drive? -- Thank you, B. Parker

  • Missing Cookie Folders
    • I'm trying to help my father resolve an issue with his computer. He is running XP SP3 Home Edition. His browser is IE8. His computer will no longer remember passwords for a number of forums and other sites where he logs in. Previously, he was able to do this, but it stopped a month or so ago. We logged into one of the forums from my computer, and it retained the log-in info, so I don't think the problem is related to the forum's servers. His privacy settings allow cookies, but I am unable to find any Cookies folders in the Documents and Settings folders. I verified that Folder Options are set to "show hidden files and folders." I took a shot at creating a Cookies folder under Documents and Settings, but I get an error msg that the folder already exists. It's not there! I'd appreciate any suggestions where to go from here. • USB keyboard broke
    • I have a USB keyboard. It started once a week maybe. I could hear the sound it makes when you plug in a USB device. Sometimes it would only be the sound and other times the keyboard would stop working. I could unplug the keyboard and plug it back in and it would work again. It has started failing once or twice a day. I have tried using other USB ports but it still fails. Any suggestions on what it could be? I haven't tried the keyboard on another machine, but I suspect the keyboard is fine.

  • Volume control button on task bar
    • I am using Windows XP if it matters. On the right-hand bottom corner in the task bar, there is a volume control button. Click once and the volume control button appears. The volume increases as the slider bar is raised. When the bar is left-clicked a sound is heard to indicate the volume. The higher the bar is raised the louder the noise when the bar is clicked. Something happened to my bar so that now the only sound I hear when I click is the "mute" sound. It doesn't matter it I have "mute" checked or not. How do I fix that? FYI This change happened after I installed "Audacity", a software that comes with a USB turntable. The turntable worked to record two songs, but quit working after that. The volume control button is the only change I can find. The turntable has been replaced and the new turntable doesn't work either. I can play all .wmv, .wav, mp3, and other files and hear sound, and the volume control bar works to control the volume when playing these type files. But I can get no sound from my turntable. Thanks, John

  • CD locked in Memory??
    • Dell Vostro 1510 winXPpro.. I have two MSDos boot CD's.. No.1 = Ghost program.. No.2 = Gdisk + small dos programs.. Both CD,s boot and work just fine.. When I restart Windows and insert No.1, it shows drive D:\ with only the Ghost program folder.. Then I insert No.2 and it still shows only the Ghost folder with the Ghost.exe program????? After POST the the Ghost folder still shows on D:\ when No.2 Gdisk is inserted in the drive?? When I insert No.1 it now shows D:\ completely blank??? This problem exists exactly the same on an old Micron GX3 with winXPpro?? Other CD's with pictures etc. work o.k...

  • XP recycle bin
    • My recycle bin looks full every time I start the computer, even though there's nothing in it. I can still "empty it" and then it looks empty, but always returns to looking full when I reboot. Any fixes for this?

  • How to delete all 'users' and recreate administrator profile in XP ?
    • Having a problem with XP Media Center preparation to upgrade to Win 7 Pro. Trying to run Windows Easy Transfer for XP to 7 but getting the following error after WET install and launch: "You are currently logged on using a temporary profile. Try starting your computer again" Restarting and/or creating a new Administrator and restarting does not solve problem. There are only 2 settings in control Panel/Users...main Administrator Login and Guests...there are no Guests created. In Computer Management there are a number of Users/Administrators listed...but nothing marked or indicated as "temporary". This is a stand alone home system/installation. I do have a home network...more or less...but only a few files/folders are set up as 'shared' Is there a way to delete all Administrators/Users in XP and then restart while setting up new/replacement "Administrator" user ? Or, can anyone suggest how to get rid of the "You are currently logged on using a temporary profile. Try starting your computer again" message so WET will run ? Thanks, Tim

  • XP & Internet Browser very unstable
    • Hi all, I am having loads of problems with my XP installation an also internet explorer and firefox programs. The system is very unstable and very slow and I have already run antivirus and spam/spyware programs and they fin nothing. both my internetnet explorer and fiefox are running very slowly and I think this may have something to do with the add-on and I was wondering if i should remove these and if so how do i do this? Also , would it be possible for me to strip everything away and leave my system only with the xp files needed to run XP. I bought this computer with XP already installed and therefore do not have the setup disk. I just want to remove all the junk and add-ons and see if that heals me. Also , can I remove the files which windows updates use and if so where do I find these. Thanks a lot in advance. JC

  • Outlook Express 6
    • Hi, All, How do I enlarge the OE6 Express Toolbar icons so that the full text labels are shown? There is plenty of vacant space on the toolbar and I have selected "Large Icons" in Icon Options. My Default Font is: Ariel 12pt.

  • order of context menu options
    • Is there a way to change the order of options in the right click context menu? I'm talking about the one that pops up when you right click an folder or a file in windows explorer. Here are the options I have: Explore Open Add to VCL media player's Playlist Search... Play with VCL Media player Add to Winamp's Bookmark list Enqueue in Winamp Play in Winamp Select Left Folder for Compare (this is for a terrific program called BeyondCompare) I want to organize these in an order that's more practical for me Explore Open Search... Select Left Folder for Compare (this is for a terrific program called BeyondCompare) Play in Winamp Enqueue in Winamp Add to Winamp's Bookmark list Play with VCL Media player Add to VCL media player's Playlist They're clearly not in alpha order even though they apper that way in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell (not sure if that's the place to alter this or not - probably not since I don't see anything in there that defines an order) Wondering if this is possible? I hunted around online but didn't find anything that specifically addresses this issue. Not in TweakUI either that I could see. Keith
