  • Having 2 troubles - CDRom drive for DELL and HP psc 2210xi all-in-
    • Hello, I currently am running XP on a DELL pc and accidentally hit the eject button for the cd drive. now it wants to 'safely remove hardware' and I am not able to use the cd rom and can't seem to find where to 'add new hardware'. It is an 'HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N-(D:). The device does show up in Device Manager but won't run a DVD or CD. With the printer, since my cd rom won't work, I was trying to update and reinstall my printer (HP Director was not working properly) and now I can't get the file 'setupsw.msi' located on my pc and I can't seem to get the 'windows install' window to go away. I actually need to fix the cd rom so I can use my cd that came with my printer. I did verify that the file is on the disk through a different pc. Please help! Thank you, Cecelala

  • IconCache.db does not refresh
    • I have XP Pro (SP3)on an AcerPower FH computer. I recently removed a proprietary security from Acer because it blocked use of the DVD and slowed down the machine. After that, All the desktop, start menu and task bar icons disappeared. The tray icons are still there. I read that refreshing the IconCache.db would work, but when I looked in C:\D & C\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data, the file wasn't there. I have tried all the techniques for refreshing the IconCache.db (change the resolution, Show Desktop Icons, run explorer from the run menu, etc.) I am convinved the IconCache.db is the problem. How do I make windows rebuild the file?

  • Why is Windows Search so slow???
    • Before I installed Windows Search on my Win XP Pro SP3 laptop (2GHz, 2G RAM, completely virus & malware free)., I used the original Windows search (search companion). When I clicked on Search companion, the search dialog immediately came up, and when I searched for a file on my HD the search was fast. Now, when I click on the link for Windows Search, there is a 4-second delay before the dialog comes up. Next, after I enter my search term and start the search, there is a noticeable delay before it even starts. But if I click on the link for Windows Search Companion, the dialog comes up immediately and the search seems a lot faster. What gives? Why is Windows Search slower? I thought it was supposed to be faster? Can I put in a button on the file explorer toolbar for the original Windows Search Companion?

  • monitor pixels
    • Folks: Recently I bought a new Acer B203W flat screen monitor. It came with the usual CD containing drivers, etc. With my Windows 2000 platform, I can set the screen pixel level to (1280 x 1024). No need to install any drivers for the monitor. However, with Windows XP, if I try to use the (1280 x 1024) pixel level, the screen goes blank for a while then it switches back to the (1024 x 768) setting.. * Why is this the case ? * Should I install drivers that came with the monitor on the XP platform ? * How to do this installation ? Thanks, JoJo.

  • Search Companion - Is there a setting for remembering which hard
    • I have two hard drives - 'C' is internal and 'I' is an external USB drive. I do not want to ever search the external 'I' drive. In Search Companion I select just the 'C' drive (instead of 'C;I') and the search functions properly. I then close and reopen the Search Companion and the default search has switched back to 'C' and 'I'. Is there anyway to retain my defaults that I want to search? Thank you in advance.

  • Disappearing icons
    • I have AcerPower FH computers with XP Pro (SP3) with all sorts of Acer proprietary security software on it. Since the software was blocking out the DVD player and slowing down the machine, I uninstalled them. NOW all the icons are gone off of the desktop and start menu for just one profile (the one that uses the machine the most). All other users I log on as have icons all over the place. What can I do to get the icons back? I have used the "Show Desktop Icons" method, I have put another copy of explorer.exe (called explorer1.exe) and told the registry to use that one, nothin. I have scanned for viruses and malware, nothin. I have done everything but put the Acer software back. Please help.

  • MS wireless laser 6000 v2 keyboard does not control audio
    • I have an MS wireless laser 6000 v2 keyboard. The audio volume control does not work. When I press it the screen control image does not show nor does the volume change. I do not believe it is hardware because it use to work. I formatted my system disk and re-installed XP a few months ago and then it stopped working. I believe it worked early in the process and stopped as I added updates but am not sure about that. Got any idea what might fix it? Thanks

  • Files coloured blue in Explorer
    • I've got a folder containing a bunch of ZIP files. When I view the list of files in Windows Explorer, the name of the file (and attributes like "Size" when viewed in Details view) are coloured blue in Explorer, some black. Usually all files are coloured black when I view them in Explorer. This is true in all the possible view styles (Thumbnail, List, etc). I've tried working out why by looking at the properties of the files, but they all look similar. Any ideas? Thanks, Alain

  • Install WIN 98 after WIN XP
    • On my notebook i have installed WIN XPSP2 on partotion C(NTFS). Then I have created partition E on the same hard disk(D is CD drive), and format it to FAT32 situable for instalation of WIN 98. The problem for me is how to install WIN 98 to E drive, without deleting WIN XP, and with boot menu to choose which operating system want to use. I need to install WIN 98 for diagnostic software of some old devices that won´t work on WIN XP. I was thinking to solve this problem in next steps: - create an image of operating system(image of WIN XP) on NTFS file system with some backup and image creating software - format C partition to FAT 32 file system - install first WIN 98 on C partition - restore image of WIN XP (which is created in NTFS) to E drive which is on FAT 32 Is it possible to do it, and will the image of WIN XP work on FAT 32 system? The crucial thing is to maintain the WIN XP on it original state because of many software installed on it. Can you please help me to solve this problem with some suggestions? I would be thankful Drazen

  • c0000014
    • I installed MSN Live Messenger version 2009 build 14.0.8089.726 and once I did I started receiving the error code c0000014 Parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c on some applications when I used them, one of which is MSN Live Messenger. Usually the message occurs multiple times while bringing up an application and all that is needed is to click on continue each time until the application finally finishes loading then it works. I can't find what's causing the problem or how to fix it. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. I suspect a DLL has been overlaid during the install or needs to be registered only I don't know which DLL. Does anyone know what's causing the problem or how to resolve it?

  • pdf maker when connected to a domain
    • Hi, I have a XP Pro computer that is connected to a domain with a server (SB2003). I log onto the computer connected to the domain and want to add a PDF printer to the computer. If I log onto the computer (when not connected to the domain) I can install PrimoPDF which is an excellent free PDF maker. this then goes into my Printers folder and works great. My problem arises when I log on to the computer (when connected to the domain) and then I can't load the PDF maker. Is there a way around this or is there a good free PDF maker that can be installed on the server to be used by all the computers?

  • Is msnews.microsoft.com dead?
    • I come to this newsgroup periodically when I have an issue with Windows but that doesn't happen very often. I'm using Outlook Express on XP as my news reader and when I try to get a complete list of newsgroups on msnews.microsoft.com, this (microsoft.public.windowsxp.general) is the ONLY newsgroup listed on the whole server. What's going on? Has Microsoft gone over to a web-based approach and abandoned usenet as I suspect? If they have, what is this one solitary newsgroup still doing in existence? Surely it can't be worth the bother to keep the new server alive for only one newsgroup, even if it is fairly heavily used like this one..... If this news server IS dead, where are we supposed to be going? -- Rhino

  • Auto Cropping
    • Folks: I am looking for any software or technique that can automate the cropping of images in a Word file. I have a Microsoft Word file that contains 100 slides or graphics or images. To get rid of information (on each slide) that I don't need, I must cut 2 inches from all sides (top, bottom, left, right) of each graphic. Now I can do this process manually. Microsoft calls it "cropping an image." But the number of images is too great to continue manually. There must be a way to automate this cropping process. * How can I automate this cropping (image editing) task ? Again the cropping process is identical in each image. Thanks, JoJo.

    • I have one machine with XP Home SP3 that is acting strangely -- sometimes reads FAT(32) media, sometimes won't; sometimes takes for ever to boot; sometimes takes many attempts before it will shut down; etc. I think it's time to reinstall; I'll try a repair install first (I have an SP2 CD), but if that doesn't work I'll start over. All I have on C: is the OS itself and apps that refused to install to D:, which is my Apps drive. All my downloaded stuff is on E:, backups on X:. If I create an "archive" using Files and Settings Transfer, can I select what gets copied back? I assume that transferring all the old registry settings would not be smart. Can I save the Desktop layout? Perce
