- add password protection to windows xp
-
When I first set up my computer I made it so I don't need a password to
login. however, I need to change this now so i can add the screensaver
password protection that is required elsewhere. How do I add the login
password protection for a user of my PC? Once I do this, the screensaver
password protection checkbox or whatever should appear, according to what I
have read elsewhere on this site. I do not have a professional edition of
software. Hope you can help!

There must be a right way to do this ...

- Icons don't update when default program changed
-
Suppose I have a file type (such as .cpp or .vhd) that is opened by
program X by default. Then I change the default program to Y by
selecting "Open With...", choosing a new program, and checking "Always
use this program". Whenever I do this, I've noticed that the icon for
files of that type does not update to Y, but instead stays with X's
icon. Is there a way to "refresh" the system so that it associates
the correct icons with file types?

- Network Print Issue
-
Hello everyone, here's hoping someone can help. I have a user (running XP
SP3), who has this issue where when she tries to print to any network printer
(whether installed on server and shared, or installed locally by IP),
whatever application she's in hangs up. It happens in all apps, and all
network printers. No other users are having this issue when printing to
these same printers. She has a printer at her desk(USB) which this does not
happen with. so far i've tried: deleting drivers and ports,
reinstalling/remapping printers, removing network card from computer,
reinstalling. Here's where it's weird, if i log onto the computer as a
different user (for instance, the local admin account) the issue does not
happen. Coming across this obviously i thought deleting and recreating the
users profile on the computer would take care of it, nope, same thing. I'm
at my wits end, anyone have any ideas, i'd love to hear them (or see them)
Thank you.

- WinXP Driver Issue
-
I have downgraded a Gateway M2614u laptop from Vista to WinXP. Gateway
has Vista drivers for this system on it's site, but no drivers for
WinXP. Nevertheless
I was able to find WinXP drivers on the net for everything except a
"Conexant HD
audio soft data fax modem with SmartCP". I have tried a ton of
different drivers
for this device including the Vista driver from Gateway for this
model, and one
from Microsoft/Windows Update. None will install correctly - modem
doesn't
work, yellow exclamation point on device in Device Manager.
I conclude that there must be multiple versions of this device (chip),
and either
there is no WinXP driver for it or I just haven't been able to
identify the correct
device and driver. Three questions:
-I've used Belarc Advisor, Everst and even Linux lspci to try to get
specific
model and version information on the device, but apparently the
information
I pick up is not sufficiently specific. Is there a way to get a more
exact
device ID or something that would enable me to track down the correct
driver?
-In the past I've used various internet driver download sites in
attempts
to solve this type of problem, and my experience has been that
they're
generally useless and sometimes even harmful. Is there such a site or
software utility that's really useful?
-If I can't find the driver, is there a way to disable the device
"completely"
in WinXP? Right now every time I boot the system Windows says "new
device found" and prompts me to try to install the driver - a cycle
I've
repeated many times in many different ways, with no luck ever.

- 0x7c91b21a error
-
Hi,
I found a solution for an error message on start up that states that
memory could not be written at 0x7c91b21a 0x00000010. It appears the
latest update for Windows Media Player is causing this problem if the
Service, Windows Driver Foundation. is turned on. It needs to be
disabled. I found this at Bleeping Computers and this solution
worked for me. Cathy

- Windows update failing
-
Hello,
I actually have 2 problems.
Problem number 1: In outlook when I try to add an attachment and I click on
the 'search in' field the add attachment windows freezes and doesn't come to
live. If I dont click on that field and try the rest it works except for that
field.
It is Windows XP pro, SP3 running Office 2003 Pro SP3.
I tried some stuff out for this problem but eventually I wanted to update
the system since he hadn't done it for over a year now. So I went to site of
windows and microsoft update and both came up with the error message
0x8024D007.
The following things I allready tried:
1->http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
2->Make batch and copy the following commands, and then paste them into
Notepad:
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S
REGSVR32 MUCLTUI.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL /S
REGSVR32 MUWEB.DLL /S
REGSVR32 QMGR.DLL /S
REGSVR32 QMGRPRXY.DLL /S
In Notepad, on the File menu, click Save As. In the Save as type list, click
All Files (*.*). In the File name box, type register.bat. Save the
Register.bat file to your desktop. Double-click the Register.bat file to
register the Windows Update files.
Try to install updates again.
---> No Success
3->There may be an issue with BITS so you try to register the following
system files: In Windows XP go to the Run item on the Start menu, and type:
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
These files are associated with the Windows Update Service.
For 32-bit Windows enter the following lines:
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
--->It gave an error on qmgr.dll
4->wtsapi32.dll. I copied a fresh wtsapi32.dll to "c:\windows\system32".
The solution is to install WTSAPI32.DLL into c:\windows\system32! If you
can't find a copy of it, I believe you can use EXPAND.EXE (on your original
Windows disk) to replace it. The command would be, I think, EXPAND
WTSAPI32.DL_ c:\windows\system32
---> No success
5->Install BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=nl&FamilyID=b93356b1-ba43-480f-983d-eb19368f9047
---> Download worked but get an error again.
So right now I am kinda runnign out of ideas. Does anybody here know
something, otherwise we have to go to our last resort and well we don't want
to do that just yet.
Thanks in advance for taking your time for this post,
René Klomp

- Getting rid of Norton (To Twayne) LightningSand.cfd corruption
-
Twayne was the most helpfull for my problem, but no one could tell me
WHAT is that damned LightningSand.cfd file that kept to get corrupted
after reboot.
It was in the NORTON 360 directory, but only present after the error.
Norton (Symantec) was no help at all, so after changing my disk and
rebulding Win from scratch,Ii finally obeyed the general advice :
'Get rid of Norton'
Well, I did on Feb 2, and instead used Avira Antivir.
Since then, NOT ANY PROBLEMS !!!
More, now the system stops in less than 1 minute (instead of 3), with
no error messages, and Avira found more than 30 'dormant' virus or
trojans (but not any active).

-
I recently tried, for the first time, to use the Moviemaker program that came

attempted to do the most basic acts. My problem is this: Ordinarily I would
uninstall it and download a new one, but from my brief exploration it appears
that Moviemaker has an unusual status and is not available for separate
download. Am I mistaken in this surmise? But if correct, what do I do?

in verifying routines to verify the burned disc with the ISO image
file.
However, I am looking for a stand-alone utility that can do the same
thing.
Which is, taking an ISO-image file on the hard disk, and verify it
with a CD (or DVD) that is inside a CD/DVD drive.
Is there such a utility available?
All suggestions are most welcome !
Thank you for reading.

- Question about a computer crash.
-
My sister-in-law told me that her computer crashed yesterday. We were
wondering, can we put in the recovery disk in it and see if we can format
the hard drive and reinstall it?? This is just a question..
She has a Window XP home edition. I think her computer is about 9 years
old.
Thanks,

- problem playing movies
-
I've just started playing movies on my two-year-old Dell laptop, which runs
WinXP. The computer came with Cyberlink's PowerDVD, which I updated right
away. The first movie I started to play is showing close-captioning, even
though I have it turned off. Is this likely an issue with the movie itself
or with the software? If the latter, is there better software I can install?
Thank you!

- Cannot uninstall generic drive from device manager
-
In trying to download photos from my FUJI camera via USB2, I did not get
the small window that usually presents options upon turning the camera on,
on what to do, eg. use Explorer, use Windows Media Player, etc. Upon
investigation I found that in Device manager under STORAGE VOLUMES, there
was a yellow exclamation point on the Generic Volume for FUJIFILM USB
DRIVEUNIT USB.
I then used the trouble shooting instructions and got to the point it says
to uninstall the driver. When I do that the Confirm Device Removal small
window comes up, I click OK a small hour glass appears and then nothing
happens. After a good 5 minutes the top of the small window heading says
"CONFIRM DEVICE REMOVAL (NOT RESPONDING).
I'd appreciate help on what to do next.
I am running on Windows XP pro.
TIA

- MS patches changing registry entries
-
Is there a way to prevent MS updates from changing a specified registry
setting? For one of the text converters, we point to a specific one we
install, but for some reason, MS recently has started to set that entry
back to the default setting. I don't want to see that setting changed
from our custom setting.
FYI, we are a vendor at the site and the site is responsible for admin
of their AD. We have little/no say over what can happened in their AD.
So any AD solution will have to run to the Admin group get approved
then go through an executive committee and the security group before it
can be deployed. Individual users do not get admin rights.

- character map
-
I am trying to use character map to enter a certain symbol into a document.
I have the character code and font installed but am having difficulty
actually typing in the code. It is the code for a check mark in the Symbols
font. It says the code is 0xD6. I believe I am suppose to hold down the ALT
key and use the numberic keyboard, but there are no letters on the numberic
keyboard. Also I don't know what the "x" means. Does that mean push the "x".
I have tryed many different ways to enter this but it does not produce the
check mark. Please advise. Also, don't know if that code leads with a
number or letter

- How To "pin" Apps To Open On A Specific Display of a Dual-Display
-
Hello to all - Question is what Windows registry entries or Windows INI files
does Windows XP Professional use to record both the <Display Used> and the
<Window Mode> when an app is closed?
Whenever I close an app on a dual-display pc, the app when re-opened will
open on the same display and in the same mode (full screen or window) as it
was in when it was closed. Obviously Windows is "remembering" this state
information and storing it somewhere.
I want to hard-code Display and Mode data for my apps so they are in effect
â??pinnedâ?? to a specific display within a dual-display desktop environment.
Else, Iâ??ll need to evaluate a third party app like UltraMon that will do this.
Thanks for all replies.

- HP 3970 Scanner
-
I am using Win XP Pro.
Maybe someone has used this scanner and knows the answer to my inquiries:
The scanner works well when started from the 'photo and imaging' desktop
icon and the scanner scand documents and photos well but I would like two
clarifications.
The front panel buttons are 'shortcuts' (scan, copy, instant share, memories
disc creator) that can be used instead of opening the 'Photo and imaging'
link but when I put a document or photo in and push the 'scan' button, it
says 'scan button press' and gives two options for 'hp scanning software' and
'Microsoft scanner and camara wizard.' When I choose 'hp scanning software,'
the HP scanning page begins to open and then an error messages states 'an
error occured communicationg with scanning device-Please ensure scanning
device is connected properly.' What am I doing wrong? Should the software be
re-installed?
Second, the 'HP Director' icon is on the desktop but when I click on it,
nothing happens. The 'photo and imaging' icon is below it and 'works' when I
click on it. Why is the 'HP Director' icon there if it does not serve a
purpose? There are four desktop icons: HP Director, HP Photo and Imaging,
Share to Web Upload folder, and HP memories disc.
Enlighten me :)

- Accessing a share
-
Small company peer-to-peer network. WinXP Pro clients. Office Manager
created a share to data folders of bookkeeping app for me. Has worked fine
until this week. She's gone on vacation so I can't log into her PC. Both
Friday and today I can see the share, but can't get into it. I get a
message that it's inaccessible, probably due to insufficient permissions.
I've rebooted both machines today and last Friday - no luck. Yesterday,
however, I got in with no problems.
What can I dig into when she gets back to see what the problem was? (I
already checked the Event logs on my end - nothing. Also created an
exception to Firewall to allow traffic for this application.)

- Installing East Asian language files
-
Hi,
I'm having difficulties installing files for East Asian languages. Every
time I select the checkbox for 'Install files for East Asian languages' under
the Languages tab of Regional and Language Options, it prompts me that it
will require 230mb of space etc, and tells me I need to restart my computer
for the changes to take effect. I click okay, and my computer
restarts...there is no prompting for an install disk or for me to point the
OS to the correct language pack files to install.
Essentially, my computer reboots and nothing changes. When I open Regional
and Language Options, the box for East Asian languages is still unchecked.
This happens every time.
I am trying to get Chinese characters to display, but right now, they just
show up as little squares. I am running Windows XP home SP3.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

- Questions regarding the IE Critical Patch
-
Dear Gurus,
I learned of the need to patch IE (version 6, 7 and 8) and need help.
There are two versions of patches --
A. MS09-072
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS09-072.mspx
B. MS10-002
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS10-002.mspx
Both deal with IE 6, 7 and 8.
Question:
1. Do I apply *BOTH* patches or just one of them?
2. If only need apply only one patch, do I apply A (MS09-072) or B
(MS10-002)?
Please help !
Much oblige !!

- highmat
-
My friend and mortuary owner was downloading some mp3 funeral services from a
usb recorder. A message popped up that asked if he wanted to compress it
into Highmat Data format. Accidentally he clicked on yes. The files are
there, they have an mp3 extension, but they won't play. Does anyone know how
to fix these files. I have tried playing them in a highmat player - the menu
comes up with the list of funerals, but it just says the files are damaged
and cannot play. Help!

- What causes one loud continuous BEEP and system lock up?
-
Got a Dell Latitude D820, WXP, all service packs and drivers up to date.
Lately, no matter what I might be doing (even walking away and doing nothing
at all), the laptop will spontaneously freeze and there is a non-stop LOUD,
continuous beep. You can't even push the power button and shut down. Must
remove battery and/or unplug the stop the horrible noise. Sometimes it
happens after being on the laptop 5 minutes, other times it won't happen
until several hours have gone by.
I have done some Google searches and even basic hardware diagnostics to no
avail. Anybody ever hear of this? Any ideas?

- Help to revocer lost files.....
-
Desperately need some help please. I have Windows XP Home Edition. The system
was running very slowly and kept losing internet connection. I thought it may
have some bugs. I purchased Norton which found and fixed several issues.
Still kept losing connection and would not let me do a system restore.
Then the mouse stopped working altogether. I assumed the system had crashed.
On boot up I pressed F10 and followed the instructions to recover the system.
However it has now reverted back to the day I got it and has lost all
Photos, Music, Homework and other files.
Is there any way I can restore these files????
