- URL.dll ... SHELL32.dll ...
-
Folks:
Sometimes there is the need to customize the look of the icons on my
desktop. The default file is URL.DLL and is located in the "system32"
folder.
URL.dll contains a mere 4 different looking icons. SHELL32.dll goes a bit
further and provided a few dozen choices for how a desktop con looks.
* Is there any other files (DLL of other) that I can use to customize
(change the look of) the icons on my desktop ?
Thanks,
JoJo.

- Files coloured blue in Explorer
-
I've got a folder containing a bunch of ZIP files. When I view the list of
files in Windows Explorer, the name of the file (and attributes like "Size"
when viewed in Details view) are coloured blue in Explorer, some black.
Usually all files are coloured black when I view them in Explorer. This is
true in all the possible view styles (Thumbnail, List, etc).
I've tried working out why by looking at the properties of the files, but
they all look similar. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Alain

- Install WIN 98 after WIN XP
-
On my notebook i have installed WIN XPSP2 on partotion C(NTFS). Then I have
created partition E on the same hard disk(D is CD drive), and format it to
FAT32 situable for instalation of WIN 98.
The problem for me is how to install WIN 98 to E drive, without deleting WIN
XP, and with boot menu to choose which operating system want to use. I need
to install WIN 98 for diagnostic software of some old devices that won´t work
on WIN XP.
I was thinking to solve this problem in next steps:
- create an image of operating system(image of WIN XP) on NTFS file system
with some backup and image creating software
- format C partition to FAT 32 file system
- install first WIN 98 on C partition
- restore image of WIN XP (which is created in NTFS) to E drive which is on
FAT 32
Is it possible to do it, and will the image of WIN XP work on FAT 32 system?
The crucial thing is to maintain the WIN XP on it original state because of
many software installed on it.
Can you please help me to solve this problem with some suggestions?
I would be thankful

I installed MSN Live Messenger version 2009 build 14.0.8089.726 and once I
did I started receiving the error code c0000014 Parameters 75b6bf7c 4
75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c on some applications when I used them, one of which is MSN
Live Messenger.
Usually the message occurs multiple times while bringing up an application
and all that is needed is to click on continue each time until the
application finally finishes loading then it works. I can't find what's
causing the problem or how to fix it. I've tried uninstalling and
reinstalling to no avail. I suspect a DLL has been overlaid during the
install or needs to be registered only I don't know which DLL.
Does anyone know what's causing the problem or how to resolve it?

- pdf maker when connected to a domain
-
Hi,
I have a XP Pro computer that is connected to a domain with a server
(SB2003). I log onto the computer connected to the domain and want to add a
PDF printer to the computer. If I log onto the computer (when not connected
to the domain) I can install PrimoPDF which is an excellent free PDF maker.
this then goes into my Printers folder and works great. My problem arises
when I log on to the computer (when connected to the domain) and then I
can't load the PDF maker.
Is there a way around this or is there a good free PDF maker that can be
installed on the server to be used by all the computers?

- Is msnews.microsoft.com dead?
-
I come to this newsgroup periodically when I have an issue with Windows but
that doesn't happen very often.
I'm using Outlook Express on XP as my news reader and when I try to get a
complete list of newsgroups on msnews.microsoft.com, this
(microsoft.public.windowsxp.general) is the ONLY newsgroup listed on the
whole server.
What's going on? Has Microsoft gone over to a web-based approach and
abandoned usenet as I suspect? If they have, what is this one solitary
newsgroup still doing in existence? Surely it can't be worth the bother to
keep the new server alive for only one newsgroup, even if it is fairly
heavily used like this one.....
If this news server IS dead, where are we supposed to be going?

- Lost my "Backup & Restore" applet reference
-
HI All,
According to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-your-files,
which includes XP (which I'm running) I believe:
To back up your files
Open Backup and Restore by
- clicking the Start button- ,
- clicking Control Panel,
- clicking System and Maintenance,
- clicking Backup and Restore.
My control-panel doesn't present a "System and Maintenance" link (even
when I scroll down to view the overflow items.)
I poked around in %systemroot% ro no avail.
Amy ideas?
Thanks in Advance,

- Auto Cropping
-
Folks:
I am looking for any software or technique that can automate the cropping of
images in a Word file.
I have a Microsoft Word file that contains 100 slides or graphics or images.
To get rid of information (on each slide) that I don't need, I must cut 2
inches from all sides (top, bottom, left, right) of each graphic.
Now I can do this process manually. Microsoft calls it "cropping an image."
But the number of images is too great to continue manually.
There must be a way to automate this cropping process.
* How can I automate this cropping (image editing) task ?
Again the cropping process is identical in each image.
Thanks,
JoJo.

- Reinstall XP Home, keeping desktop layout?

I have one machine with XP Home SP3 that is acting strangely --
sometimes reads FAT(32) media, sometimes won't; sometimes takes for ever

think it's time to reinstall; I'll try a repair install first (I have an
SP2 CD), but if that doesn't work I'll start over.
All I have on C: is the OS itself and apps that refused to install to
D:, which is my Apps drive. All my downloaded stuff is on E:, backups on X:.
If I create an "archive" using Files and Settings Transfer, can I select
what gets copied back? I assume that transferring all the old registry
settings would not be smart. Can I save the Desktop layout?

- Force restart of repair install
-
I've done repair installs for a couple systems, and it generally goes
well...except once: Cursor lock, had to hit the reset button. Then on
restart, windows says it's resuming, prompts for the CD, etc. All this
would be fine, except it gets to a certain point and says it can't
complete the repair.
There's got to be a flag or file that is signalling windows to resume
the install. If I can delete that, maybe a restart on the repair will
do the trick.
Anyone know how to force that?

- A new way of looking at files (Future windows/file explorer ?) "Tag" based file browsing...
-
Hello,
Sometimes files/folder belong to different categories at the same, for
example: "graphics related", "music related", "programming related", "math
related".
Currently windows requires me to put the file in folders, this creates a
"static" view of the situation. In reality I like placing all the
files/folder in one big folder so I can "easily" find everything.
However when the number of files reaches thousands or ten thousands it
becomes a bit harder to "sift" through it... I have no real way of
"filtering out" unwanted files, or "filtering/zoom into the files I wanna
see".
So I recommend a new way of looking at files in the file system:
The user receives the ability to "tag" files. Which means the user can now
start adding "tags" to files.
So for example:
MyGameSource.cpp tags: "c++", "game development", "graphics", "game engine",
whatever.
Then the next time I want to "sift" through my files... for example I want
to see all "graphics" related files...
So then I type the "tag" search term into the windows explorer like so:
Graphics
The future windows/file explorer should filter out all other files which are
not graphics related.
Another example:
tag: "redcode" ;)
Search: "redcode"
All files related to redcode are shown...
This could be done for the current folder, there should also be an option
which says: "Search subfolders as well" and display those results as well !
;)
Let's call this new idea: "Tag" based file browsing ? ;)
Bye,
Skybuck :)

Hello,
Sorry for posting question not Windows related but I do not know

On startup it takes 59 seconds for my computer to display the first boot

Why there is such long delay and what should I do to change that?

Every time I click on a link to send a message to someone, a box pops up with

Then, a box pops up, telling me to enter my 25 digit Office 2007 Product

and reentered and reentered the code, only to have the system tell me it is
the wrong code. I can click on the Key box to cancel the process, and I can
still eventually send the message. However, the system punishes me by making
me verify that, yes, i want to cancel, yes I want to continue, yes . .
How do I stop this?

time, it's OK and I can continue working.
is this a sign of a malware or virus? is there any fix for that?
thank you
Maurice

- Bios
-
Hi,
I have an old Dell system running XP which I'm gradually finding new uses
for, one
limitation that someone mentioned to me though was that upgrading the hard
drive might be limited by the Bios. Is this likely to be an issue and if so
what is my limit likely to be - the Bio version is A6? Is there a way around
this?
Cheers

- Configuring Master Browser in peer to peer network
-
I have a five computer peer to peer network. I am constantly getting Master
Browser errors in the logs of all of the computers (MRxSmb Event ID: 8003,
BROWSER Event ID: 8021)
I realize these errors are not critical, but it bugs me that things are not
configured 100%. Also, the errors grab my attention in the log and distract
me form possibly seeing more serious errors.
I understand the concept of MB and how the election works in regard to OS
etc (all computers are XP SP3)
I have tried setting:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services \Browser\Parameters
'IsDomainMaster' to TRUE on one machine and FALSE on others
'MaintainServerList' to TRUE on one machine AUTO on others
What is the proper way to configure the MB in this network (there is no real
'server' or machine that is on all the time to maintain this list)?
Thanks guys
