- The Registry Cannot load the hive (file)
-
I have a friend and apparently the Lord doesn't like him very much.
He gets a blue screen of death with the following message.
The Registry Cannot load the hive (file)
\systemroot\system32\config\software
or its lot or alternate.
it is corrupt, absent ot not verifiable.
I googled this message and the only way I see to fix it requires the
Windows media. He is currently traveling the world and doesn't have his
CD with him.
Is there a way for him to recover the registry some other way?
This is why I use a Mac....

- Audio Problems - Help!
-
Hello..
Ever since I put a fresh install of Windows XP Professional on my computer,
32 bit btw, I have not been able to get sound to come out of my speakers..
Yes, I did install the drivers from my manufacturer's website, and even
installed a program called Driver checker to install all the missing drivers
I needed.. But still, no sound. Headphones don't even work so I know it's not
the speakers fault, it's obviously some kind of driver messing it up or
something.. Anyone have any ideas? I can supply screenshots of anything, if
needed.

I am running XP. Frequently, my outlet express fails to work. The only way
I can get it started is to reboot my computer. When I reboot, I get the

Is there a remedy for this?
Thanks

- Temporary Keyboard lockup
-
Hello,
As I'm typing I notice notice my keyboard will lock up. For example I may
type the word "computer" & look at the screen & only see the little "c". The
cursor will be locked up. After about 10 seconds the rest of the letters
appear. I cleaned my keyboard but the problem still occurs. However, as I
typed this message the problem didn't occur. It comes and goes. I can
speed up the 10 second delay by clicking on another web page & then coming
back to my message & the cursor will be blinking fine.

Cannot load SP3 on my SP2 XP:
I tried this run SP3 last night on my computer and it told me "not

the files and then it says "couldn't uninstall correctly, XP might not
work properly".
The system is running fine, but I wonder why but I wonder why I cannot
install it?!?!
Before this, I had a problem with IE not working and I thought it
might be fixed with SP3 (it wasn't the issue it seems) - but since
have fixed the IE issue, but now it leaves me wondering about SP3 and
why it isn't working.

- Window control elements (minimize, maximize, close, scroll bars, etc)
-
The issue I'm seeing is actually on an NT4 server with IE6-sp1, but I'm
asking here because there aren't enough people following NT4 newsgroups
any more, and I figure that NT is similar enough to XP in this
situation.
The problem is that these graphic symbols or control elements are
screwed up:
- window minimize, maximize, and close buttons (upper right-hand
corner of any window)
- scroll bar up and down arrows, arrows for drop-down lists (the
actual small black arrow)
- radio buttons and check boxes
are screwed up and seem to have been replaced with numbers or letters
(in the case of the first two items) and radio buttons and check boxes
are so mangled that it's hard to tell when a check-box or radio button
has been set or is empty.
The system in question has been like this for probably the last 7 years,
and I have no ides what might have triggered or caused it.
What part of an NT / XP system is responsible for rendering those window
and menu-interface objects?
I've re-applied the last service-pack for NT4 (SP6a) and re-installed
IE6-sp1. I've changed the video card in the system (from ATI to Nvidia)
and installed the correct video drivers.
What API, GDI, kernel, DLL, VXD, activex, directx, or font files (etc)
plays a role in rendering these particular window control elements or
objects?

- XP Won't boot
-
This obviously is not an XP problem, but hope someone here can point me in
the
right direction... Windows XP Home, MSI Motherboard, SiS chip set I
believe.
I picked this machine up today. It was booted and running at its previous
location.
I disconnected everything brought it home, plugged it in, never get anything
on
the monitor. After about 3 seconds, get about a 10 second beep, then about
a six
second pause, and keeps repeating this 10 second beep with that 6 second
pause.
I let it continue thru 7 or 8 beeps.
I've reseated the memory, tried different keyboard, mouse, power cord, HD.
About the only thing different from its original connections, I've connected
it
directly to an AC outlet, where it was connected thru an APC UPS device, and
it was connected to the internet thru a router. The only connections I have
now
are Power, Mouse, Keyboard, Monitor.

I have a big problem - two of my home machines seem to have been hit with
some kind of virus. When I type my password to login it immediately logs me

right off.
I found some articles on fixing this like these:

http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-11184-0.html?forumID=47&threadID=160649&messageID=2208716&tag=content;leftCol
however I got a big problem - I dont seem to have a copy of userinit.exe to
copy! it simply does not exist on that machine or the recovery console can't
see it!
To make this even worse I wanted to try using my KNOPPIX Linux boot cd to
try and see if I can get a userinit.exe file in there from another PC but
that PC wont boot the linux either!
What frustration... can anyone provide any ideas on how I an resolve this? I
dont have any floppy drives so that's out. I have USB flash drives but
without being able to boot windows or linux I can access them

- Separate paragraphs combine into one hugh paragraph on forum.
-
I have Windows XP-Pro SP3 but I have also posted this on both the
Firefox and NoScript support forums because I do not know if my
problem relates to Windows XP-Pro SP3, Firefox 3.6, NoScript 1.9.9.47,
or none of the above. The problem does not occur with Windows 7,
Firefox 3.6, NoScript 1.9.9.47
The problem is in posting messages on a particular forum:
windows7forums.com. Separate paragraphs combine into one hugh
paragraph when I post a message with my desktop XP computer. When the
paragraphs combine into a superparagraph, the linefeed (enter key)
does not function to divide it. It happens to the posted message, but
I do not have to post the message to make it happen. When I [preview]
the message the superparagraph is displayed. Also the input-text in
the editbox gets replaced by the equivalent of the previewed
superparagraph.
To learn more, I performed an experiment where I posted a message
containing paragraphs with my Windows 7 laptop. The
paragraphs/linefeeds displayed normally when posted from the W7
laptop. It looked like this:
==== BEGINNING
This test is with my other computer -- the Windows 7 one.
NEW PARAGRAPH: This starts a new paragraph with a blank linefeed above
it.
NEW PARAGRAPH: This starts a new paragraph with no blank line added
above it.
Stan Hilliard
==== END
This message above looks the same when viewed on the forum with either
PC. When I post that same message from the XP desktop PC I get a
message that looks like this on the forum.
==== BEGINNING
This test is with my other computer -- the Windows 7 one. NEW
PARAGRAPH: This starts a new paragraph with a blank linefeed above it.
NEW PARAGRAPH: This starts a new paragraph with no blank line added
above it. Stan Hilliard
==== END
This message above also looks the same when viewed on the forum with
either PC.
Then with my XP desktop PC I used the forum's [edit] button to edit
the good looking message that I had posted from the W7 laptop. Here is
what I saw in the message-edit textbox:
==== BEGINNING
This test is with my other computer -- the Windows 7 one.<br />
<br />
NEW PARAGRAPH: This starts a new paragraph with a blank linefeed above
it.<br />
NEW PARAGRAPH: This starts a new paragraph with no blank line added
above it.<br />
<br />
Stan Hilliard<br />
==== END
I hope the above information is a clue to what is wrong. Here are some
other facts that I learned from my experimenting:
The superparagraph does not happen when I post with my laptop.
(Windows 7, NoScript 1.9.9.47 and Firefox 3.6 or IE8 browsers.)
The superparagraph does not happen when I post with the IE8 browser on
my desktop PC. (Windows XP.)
The superparagraph only happens when I post with Firefox 3.6/NoScript
1.9.9.47 on my desktop PC. And it only happens on one of the many
forums that I have used: windows7forums.com. The administrators of
windows7forums.com closed my discussion because they could not
reproduce my results from their end. They claimed it my description
"is either is a ploy or is completely nonsensical."
Does anyone here understand what is going on that messes the
formatting? Information will be appreciated.

- Why does Outlook Express hide attachments from one Sender
-
My home Outlook Express email hides attachments from my work Outlook
email account/address. The email message shows up fine, but with no
appearance of an attachment (no paper clip, no x'd out box, nothing).
My home OE receives attachments from others at the office just fine.
To bypass this, at work I send emails with attachments to a co-worker,
and have the co-worker forward that message to my home OE; which
arrives just fine.
I say "hides attachments" because if from OE I view the Properties of
the message, and Message Source, I see reference to the attachment,
and the message size reflects the attachment. So I believe the
attachments make the trip - but is somehow hidden by my local OE.
I've tried sending plain text, HTML, and rich text. All show up fine
- but no attachment.
My work email address is not a blocked sender on my home OE.
My work email address is defined in my home OE address book.
My home OE is 6.00.2900.5512 running on Windows XP 5.1 Service Pack 3.
Obviously, I'd like to fix this problem and be able to receive
attachments from myself at home. Help!?

- Task Scheduler wakes computer on NO TASK days
-
We have Task Scheduler set to run a task M, T, W, T at 2AM.
The "Wake the computer to run the task" is checked as the computer is
usually in hibernate at this time.
On the days that no task is scheduled (F, S, S) the computer resumes from
hibernate at 2AM.
The task DOES NOT RUN (as it is not scheduled). There is no entry in the
Task Schedule log for these days (and there shouldn't be) and the return to
hibernate after the task completes does not kick in as it does on the days
that a task is scheduled.
Why is the computer waking on the no event days (and it is not even
returning to hibernate)?
We have other computers with the same task schedule that are working as
scheduled.
I have confirmed that it is the task that is waking the computer (and not a
BIOS setting, etc). If I disable the task the computer does not wake.
I have also tried deleting and recreating the task.
The computer is running Windows XP Service Pack3.

- Application Hang when Domain is not present
-
Hello,
I have 25 laptops part of my domain. Here is an issue that laptops
are experiencing:
As long as they are connected to the network in the office,
everything (anything in START menu) works marvelous and without any
issues.
When the laptop is off site and as long as they are not connected to
any LAN or WiFi network, everything (anything in START menu) works
without any problem.
However, as soon as a laptop is off site and connected to WiFi or
LAN, and if START menu is launched or any Office applications on the
desktop are launched everything freezes. It takes about a minute or
two for things to start working again.
I have looked in Event Viewer >> Application and the following three
errors are present:
Event ID 1000, Could not execute the following script \\Domain-
Name\sysvol\Domain-Name\scripts\hidedocs.vbs. The network location
cannot be reached.
Event ID 1000, Could not execute the following script \\Domain-
Name\sysvol\Domain-Name\scripts\logon.vbs. The network location
cannot be reached.
Event ID 1054, Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name
for your computer network. (The specific domain either does not
exist or could not be contacted) Group Policy processing aborted.
It is clear that the machine is trying to contact the domain and
execute scripts. I have looked up these Event IDs on Microsoft's
website and none of the solutions they have provided has helped so
far.
Is there anyway (possibly in GPO settings) that a setting can be
activated or deactivated to make the laptop realize that it is off
site, so the applications don't hang when connected to a network
other than domain in the office?
Is there any other solution for this issue that anyone may be able to
suggest?
Any help would be appreciated.

- Monitor Processing?

In XP SP3, is there a program or programs that I can install and run

Every so often my machine slows down suddenly and for long periods

anyway) the processes executing, but that's all.
Since I can shut down and re-boot to get things running at normal

- SP3 issues
-
A friend's son's machine is relatively new for XP (2005), but it is sorely
lacking in RAM, something that will be remedied as soon as Crucial delivers
on Monday. It was also wildly inundated with spyware, etc., but no viruses
according to Avast! Took a couple of days, but it seems relatively clean
now. Probably some permanent damage, but clean reinstall is something I'm
trying to avoid.
Meanwhile, being an impatient sort of person, I still tried to install SP3
before upping the RAM. The install failed at first due to permissions issues
which I thought I had remedied using SUBINACL as described here:
http://www.askvg.com/windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3-setup-error-access-is-denied
The install actually finished after several hours -- 256MB RAM for WinXP is
a
crime, Dell should be held responsible for even allowing such a
configuration. Anyway, when I rebooted, it showed itself updating things
before logging on (the way Windows Updates often do.) But after logging on,
two command windows popped up. One did whatever and went away quickly, but
the other one showed a dozen or two responses, all of them "Access denied"
(may not be the exact phrase.)
I plan to reinstall SP3 when the new RAM arrives (unless that is
contraindicated), but I suspect that won't solve this issue. My assumption
is that the errors mean that the install wasn't entirely successful, but I'm
not stuck on that. Maybe the responses are expected in certain
circumstances. Still, if there is anything more I can do to ensure a clean
installation, please tell me all about it (or them.)
Much thanks,

- Lost dual monitor capability in XP
-
I had XP Pro running with dual monitors for a couple of years,
switched out monitors from time to time and no problem. I've got an
Intel 2.8 MB with onboard video connected to one monitor, and an ATI
Rage Pro to the other monitor. Worked great till I had to replace the
hard drive and reinstall XP Pro. I'm running SP3 with all updates.
Now what happens is, whichever video adapter I make primary in the
BIOS, XP comes up on it, with the drivers okay, and the non-primary
one XP detects but Device Manager says the driver isn't installed.
And nothing I can do will make it accept the driver for the non-
primary one. But if I reboot and change the primary video adapter,
then it comes up with the other adapter & monitor just great and the
FIRST one is now failing to start.
When I go to Settings on Display Properties, I only see one monitor in
either case.
I've tried taking out the ATI and starting without it, then and
putting it back and restarting, no change. I don't know why this
install of XP will only accept the primary video adapter and not a
second one.

- Icons don't update when default program changed
-
Suppose I have a file type (such as .cpp or .vhd) that is opened by
program X by default. Then I change the default program to Y by
selecting "Open With...", choosing a new program, and checking "Always
use this program". Whenever I do this, I've noticed that the icon for
files of that type does not update to Y, but instead stays with X's
icon. Is there a way to "refresh" the system so that it associates
the correct icons with file types?

- Network Print Issue
-
Hello everyone, here's hoping someone can help. I have a user (running XP
SP3), who has this issue where when she tries to print to any network printer
(whether installed on server and shared, or installed locally by IP),
whatever application she's in hangs up. It happens in all apps, and all
network printers. No other users are having this issue when printing to
these same printers. She has a printer at her desk(USB) which this does not
happen with. so far i've tried: deleting drivers and ports,
reinstalling/remapping printers, removing network card from computer,
reinstalling. Here's where it's weird, if i log onto the computer as a
different user (for instance, the local admin account) the issue does not
happen. Coming across this obviously i thought deleting and recreating the
users profile on the computer would take care of it, nope, same thing. I'm
at my wits end, anyone have any ideas, i'd love to hear them (or see them)
Thank you.

- WinXP Driver Issue
-
I have downgraded a Gateway M2614u laptop from Vista to WinXP. Gateway
has Vista drivers for this system on it's site, but no drivers for
WinXP. Nevertheless
I was able to find WinXP drivers on the net for everything except a
"Conexant HD
audio soft data fax modem with SmartCP". I have tried a ton of
different drivers
for this device including the Vista driver from Gateway for this
model, and one
from Microsoft/Windows Update. None will install correctly - modem
doesn't
work, yellow exclamation point on device in Device Manager.
I conclude that there must be multiple versions of this device (chip),
and either
there is no WinXP driver for it or I just haven't been able to
identify the correct
device and driver. Three questions:
-I've used Belarc Advisor, Everst and even Linux lspci to try to get
specific
model and version information on the device, but apparently the
information
I pick up is not sufficiently specific. Is there a way to get a more
exact
device ID or something that would enable me to track down the correct
driver?
-In the past I've used various internet driver download sites in
attempts
to solve this type of problem, and my experience has been that
they're
generally useless and sometimes even harmful. Is there such a site or
software utility that's really useful?
-If I can't find the driver, is there a way to disable the device
"completely"
in WinXP? Right now every time I boot the system Windows says "new
device found" and prompts me to try to install the driver - a cycle
I've
repeated many times in many different ways, with no luck ever.

- 0x7c91b21a error
-
Hi,
I found a solution for an error message on start up that states that
memory could not be written at 0x7c91b21a 0x00000010. It appears the
latest update for Windows Media Player is causing this problem if the
Service, Windows Driver Foundation. is turned on. It needs to be
disabled. I found this at Bleeping Computers and this solution
worked for me. Cathy

- Windows update failing
-
Hello,
I actually have 2 problems.
Problem number 1: In outlook when I try to add an attachment and I click on
the 'search in' field the add attachment windows freezes and doesn't come to
live. If I dont click on that field and try the rest it works except for that
field.
It is Windows XP pro, SP3 running Office 2003 Pro SP3.
I tried some stuff out for this problem but eventually I wanted to update
the system since he hadn't done it for over a year now. So I went to site of
windows and microsoft update and both came up with the error message
0x8024D007.
The following things I allready tried:
1->http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
2->Make batch and copy the following commands, and then paste them into
Notepad:
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S
REGSVR32 MUCLTUI.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL /S
REGSVR32 MUWEB.DLL /S
REGSVR32 QMGR.DLL /S
REGSVR32 QMGRPRXY.DLL /S
In Notepad, on the File menu, click Save As. In the Save as type list, click
All Files (*.*). In the File name box, type register.bat. Save the
Register.bat file to your desktop. Double-click the Register.bat file to
register the Windows Update files.
Try to install updates again.
---> No Success
3->There may be an issue with BITS so you try to register the following
system files: In Windows XP go to the Run item on the Start menu, and type:
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
These files are associated with the Windows Update Service.
For 32-bit Windows enter the following lines:
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
--->It gave an error on qmgr.dll
4->wtsapi32.dll. I copied a fresh wtsapi32.dll to "c:\windows\system32".
The solution is to install WTSAPI32.DLL into c:\windows\system32! If you
can't find a copy of it, I believe you can use EXPAND.EXE (on your original
Windows disk) to replace it. The command would be, I think, EXPAND
WTSAPI32.DL_ c:\windows\system32
---> No success
5->Install BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=nl&FamilyID=b93356b1-ba43-480f-983d-eb19368f9047
---> Download worked but get an error again.
So right now I am kinda runnign out of ideas. Does anybody here know
something, otherwise we have to go to our last resort and well we don't want
to do that just yet.
Thanks in advance for taking your time for this post,
René Klomp

- Getting rid of Norton (To Twayne) LightningSand.cfd corruption
-
Twayne was the most helpfull for my problem, but no one could tell me
WHAT is that damned LightningSand.cfd file that kept to get corrupted
after reboot.
It was in the NORTON 360 directory, but only present after the error.
Norton (Symantec) was no help at all, so after changing my disk and
rebulding Win from scratch,Ii finally obeyed the general advice :
'Get rid of Norton'
Well, I did on Feb 2, and instead used Avira Antivir.
Since then, NOT ANY PROBLEMS !!!
More, now the system stops in less than 1 minute (instead of 3), with
no error messages, and Avira found more than 30 'dormant' virus or
trojans (but not any active).
