- XPM (Windows 7 - Windows Virtual PC) vs VmWare & other Platform
-
Hi,
I am exploring Windows Virtual PC
along with XPM(Windows XP mode)
in Windows 7.
The XPM is a virtual machine package
for Windows Virtual PC. It allows
Windows XP apps to run in a virtual
environment alongside the Windows 7
apps in same desktop. The concept
of using the same desktop sounds
very interesting & good !!
XP Mode enables the ability to run many
older Windows XP business and
other applications . But what about the
earlier versions support ? I wonder the
need for XPM in Windows 7 that too
specifically w.r.t XP ?
XP Mode applications run in a
Terminal Services session in the
virtualized Windows XP, and are
accessed via Remote Desktop Protocol
by a client running on the Windows 7 host.
Is XPM just to demonstrate the usage
of same desktop for virtualization ?
Will XPM good for high end games in XP ?
How is it be rated against Vmware and
other virtualization technologies ?
How is it rated against VirtualBox ?
Will it support linux in the future upgrades ?
Any ideas ?
Thx in advans,

- Performance Problem and the Logical Disk Manager service
-
I am experiencing a number of related (I believe) issues with one of my old
PCs. I have just reinstalled Windows XP. The machine has two S-ATA drives,
one old, the other brand new - and now hosting seven partitions including the
C Drive. The rebuild was going well (the machine is currently at XP SP2 )
until I deleted a partition on the older drive â?? I did this from the Disk
Management console. Immediately thereafter I encountered problems: all of the
NTFS partitions on that disk appeared to have been deleted, and when I
re-booted the machine the disk was no longer visible in the console. Not only
that but the performance of the machine is truly abysmal for all disk related
tasks â?? I suspect when the Logical Disk Manager service is involved, but I
donâ??t have the necessary skills to make that determination properly.
Can someone offer guidance?
Many thanks in advance,
Neil

How do I disable or remove the program? I do not have the password. The

I have tried "Remove/Add Programs" with no success.

- C: drive copy / backup to D:
-
I have installed a second hard drive (D:) which I intend to be a
backup for the C: drive. All I would like to do is copy the entire C:
drive to the D: drive on a weekly schedule.
I've looked into the Backup utility in XP and it's close to what I
want, but it makes a bkf file rather than a copy. This is not as
convenient for me (I'd like to be able to manually examine the files
on D:) also I read the bkf file is corrupted even with a single bit
error. I've looked at some other freeware programs but its the same
deal, although the compressed format differs from product to product.
Can anyone point me to a program that makes a simple copy of the drive
and runs on a regular schedule? Many thanks.

- XP mode in windows 7
-
This is really a windows 7 question, but I could not find a windows 7
newsgroup...If there is one please tell me where to find it.
If windows 7 comes with XP mode, is there any reason to buy a computer with
"windows 7 downgrade XP" option (this means the PC comes with windows XP,
and an install disk for windows 7).
I may have some medical software that runs only in XP, or maybe not. Won't
know until I try.

- Several Ntoskrnl BSOD crashes over the last week, but different stop
-
I've experienced 3 different BSOD's in the last week. I've started using
the Microsoft Windbg debugger to trace through them. I'm also using a
3rd party utility called BlueScreenView in addition to Windbg for
analysis. Each crash has a different Stop code number, but so far they
all seem to have a common origin in the NTOSKRNL.EXE installed with
Windows XP SP3. Meanwhile, HAL.DLL is involved with 2 of the 3 crashes
so far.
The first BSOD occurred on Dec 29th, 2009 and the most recent occurred
last night, Jan 6th, 2010. There were some previous BSOD's even before
that, but I didn't have the save kernel dump feature turned on, so I
missed those early ones.
Question is should I roll back to an earlier version of NTOSKRNL, and if
so which patch was it installed with?

This topic might be like whats listed on page #2 "slow computer".

slow to start up-slow to download websites-slow to shut down. Last time i ran

again.
I've run dban and used the factory restore disc (with all their extra
worthless software) everytime i format.

- Replacement hard drive problem/ account access
-
Hi there,
This is my first post so please be gentle!
My family computer is an old Dell Inspiron and for a while its been
very slow, then it stopped booting alltogether. The problem turned out
to be the hard drive was degenerating so we bought a new one, installed
it and kept the old one as the F drive so that we could access all the
old files. My brother then reinstalled windows onto the machine.
So far so good. Until I tried to access my old files.
My old user account was password protected and Im assuming that this is
the problem as when I try to get into it I get
F:\Documents and Settings\Jonathan is not accessible
Access is denied
Any idea how I can get into this folder as there are lots of family
photos, important documents, etc, etc that I need!!!
Thanks a lot guys!!

My laptop (IBM T40), will not recognize the Iphone/Ipod cable.
It does recognize my usb flash drive, but not the cable, so it cant b
a loose connection. I only have 2 ports, neither work with the cable.
Used to work, stop working all of a sudden.
It says "One of the USB devices attached to this computer ha
malfunctioned".
Have reinstalled USB drivers, didn't work.
Have already uninstalled all the USB Root Hubs in Device Manager
restarted, didn't work. It did recognize the cable as my Iphone made th
sound that it is charging, but once it went into Windows, it didn'
recognize it anymore.
Installed new updates on windows, didn't work.

- 2 Hard Drives One OS same system.
-
Hi again, I had a question before I started hoping someone has tried and
done this so I can shorten my install time.
I have a new build with 2 HDs one SATA, one old IDE. I want to install WinXP
Pro on both and will boot primarilly to SATA drive. I want to be able to
select upon start-up to boot to the IDE (without going into the bios) if I
choose. I really dont care about the drive letters on the second drive, but
I assume the will be C, D, etc. as long as the primary drive is C, D, E etc.
which I am sure it will be. I dont really car about accessing one drive from
the other, I am simply looking at two independent drives which I can select
to boot to upon startup.
Can this be done like I described. I thought the SATA drive needs to have
the OS installed first, but need to confirm.
Reason: the SATA drive will be used entirely for work. In the past I had
one drive and somehow inadvertantly I would end up with some virus where I
would have to format and re-install. I cannot endure the downtime. So the
second drive will be use to mess around so to speak, test software, surf the
net, etc. and if I pick up a virus it is seperated. Or if a family member
needs to use the computer they stay far away from my work.
Thanks again in advance, and BTW Happy New Year to all.

- Explorer tries to write DLLs when searching Windows
-
When using 'My Computer' to Search for any file name in the C:\WINDOWS
directory, Explorer (not IE) tries to write a number of files. (Details at
end)
It does this _only_ when searching C:\WINDOWS. I tried searching other
directories and it keeps quiet.
So a number of questions arise:
* Is this expected behaviour? I certainly would not expect search -
essentially a read only application - to be writing files.
* Is this indicative of some virus? Antivir does not think so, but a
sophisticated virus can defeat any virus checker.
* Is there a cure?
I am running XP Pro. v 5.1, Build 2600 xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435 : Service
pack 3.
The files being written by explorer.exe are:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LEGITCHECKCONTROL.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\OPUC.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MUWEB.DLL
C:\PROGRAM FILES\JAVA\J2RE1.4.1_01\BIN\NPJPI141_01.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\INTRALAUNCH.OCX
C:\PROGRAM FILES\JAVA\J2RE1.4.1_01\BIN\NPJPI141_01.DLL
C:\PROGRAM FILES\JAVA\J2RE1.4.2\BIN\NPJPI142.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MACROMED\FLASH\FLASH10C.OCX
There may be other, non-executable, files being written too, but my software
does not intercept or report those.
Thanks

- WinXP password
-
I recently decided I needed a password
to protect XP. As administrator, I went to
Ctrl Panel/User Accounts and entered
a password and confirmed it.
Since then, nothing has changed when
I start my WinXP Home/SP3. It's as
though I had never made the change.
Have I missed something?
Thanks,
Jim.

- PCI device not working?
-
I've got a problem with a PCI device. The Device Manager has the BI
yellow question mark on the PCI device and says that it's not working.
Every time I start my computer, it says that new hardware is found bu
that it can't be installed without the driver. The problem is that
don't even know what the PCI device is. Here's what it says is th
Device Instance Id is:
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_AA08&SUBSYS_AA081545&REV_00\4&36560896&0&0108
Can someone tell me what this device is and how I can download a drive
for it? I'm also attaching a pic of what it looks like in the Devic
Manager.
Thank you in advance,

- Restore Backup Files
-
Hi there
I have posted this question to the XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows
XP General Discussion board as suggested by other users.
Some time ago I set up the Backup feature on Windows XP Pro so that my
laptop data got backed up daily to an external hard drive.
The laptop was recently stolen but thankfully, the external hard drive was
left behind and I have a Mac desktop computer with Bootcamp.
When I restore the backup.bkf file, the directories are all there, but there
is no data - not a Word, Excel, PDF or any other type of file to be found
yet the backup.bkf file is 119901kb in size.
Any suggestions and/or help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Cheers

- WINXP IE8 Crashing

Winxpie8

75Gbs) VID ATI Radeon 9600/9550/X1050 series
Hi are any of you getting this sort of problem?
Since upgrading from ie7 to ie8 roughly 6mths ago I find slowly at
first but gradually becoming more and more frequently while I am using
IE8 it crashes. Most times it will recover but occasionally it wil BSD
and reboot. I send the reports as requested by the MS system but do not
restore from any earlier points as I believe the IE8 is itself the
problem. I had hoped over time MS would eventually come out with a
hotfix or some other repair but that is looking dim and distant.
I did not have this or any other problems before and now regret
installing IE8.
I use OE8 and dont want to risk losing my em system as I have an
enormous amount os stuff there -- so although I would like to revert to
IE7 but I am wary of the change.
I am a regular player of CS with no problems experienced there and I
have no other probs with my kit including OE8 (other than when I look at
my restore points I see a lot of Software Distribution Service 30
entries(problem?? dont know).
Would be interested in any viewpoints you may have.

Hi,
I have just noticed that for some reason I cannot turn on my firewall.
It tells me it is controlled by Group Policy.
I am the only one on this box and Admin and am now not sure what I did
to allow this.
Can I get some help please to turn the Firewall on.
I have Anti Virus programs so maybe they are doing this?
Thanks

- Linux along with Windows booted from USB Stick (Co-existence of Linux
-
Hi,
I need Windows for certain applications
and Linux for certain other applications.
But, the computer currently has only
Linux(Ubuntu Destop version - 9.10) on it.
I do not wish to disturb the Linux installed
on it. So, i am trying to have Windows via
USB stick !! :-)
I am following the below steps for
Windows XP from USB stick -
http://www.winusb.de/index_en.html
(Windows XP is booted from USB Stick)
But,
I understand that by the above method
we can have the Windows XP booted
up from the USB Stick and Windows
XP will be using entire RAM :-(
But, i would like to have Linux also !
Is it possible to have Linux and Windows
simulataneously so that i can switch
between Linux & Windows ?
Any ideas ?
Thx in advans,
Karthik Balaguru

- Slow Computer
-
Please help me with this issue.
I apologize if I have posted this in an inappropriate group.
I bought an Acer Aspire 6 cell Netbook (Windows XP I believe) a few
months ago . It ran great for a few months. Now it is vey slow.
I did the following:
1. Did a run
misconfig
and deselected the programs I did not want.
( I get an error window that says:
An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a
service...
but yet it seems to deselect the software)
2. Opened Chrome and Mozilla / Firefox and cleared history, cache
etc.
But it is still very slow.
I have not added /downloaded any software to the netbook nor changed
anything.
Can anyone please suggest what I should next ?
Thanks in advance for your input,
Irfan Williams

I used some other program yesterday to get rid of over 1000 messages from 2009.
Now when I hit the delete key nothing happens. I have XP, IE 8.0, and OE 6.0. I
tried reinstalling IE 8.- but nothing changed. Also my spell checker (Tiny

- windows xp stuck in 640x480 mode
-
Heres the story. I have a refurnished gateway(xp pro) that was running good.
- I went to the windows update site and downloaded alot of the updates.
Afterwords. i downloaded a few optional software and hardware updates. This
somehow caused the display setting to stay on 640x480 pixels-4 bit (color
quality). The optional updates were for the monitor and video card.
-Next, i ran dban to wipe the harddrive clean and reinstall with a dell
reinstall disc. The display setting is still stuck on 640x480 pixels-4 bit.
After the reinstall, its not connecting to the net; through my broadband
How do i reload the video setting? Nothing i've done has worked.
When reformatting, do i need to disconnect the ethernet cable?
