- Win.XP -Win.7 dual boot
-
I installed 7, now trying to install xp as a dual boot. I need to install
SATA drivers via F6 during the XP install through Floopy Drive A. The
problem is - I have no floppy drive. Do I have to go buy and install one? Is
there a way around this?
Now here is a weird side note....My Win 7 device manager says I DO have
a floppy drive and its working properly, also "my Computer" shows I have one
also. Whats up with that??
Thanks, Pat

- Device Location
-
I'm running XPHome, SP3, on an IDE machine, cable select.
I've got (I opened the case to be sure, and Windows Explorer reports all
four drive letters/size/type correctly as):
Primary IDE
1) hard drive C, master (end of cable)
2) hard drive D, slave
Secondary IDE
3) DVD-ROM E, master (end of cable)
4) DVD-RW F, slave
In Device Manager, the Primary IDE Channel, Advanced Settings tab shows:
Device 0 (running UDMA 5)
Device 1 (running UDMA 5)
and the Secondary IDE Channel shows:
Device 0 (running UDMA 2)
Device 1 (running UDMA 4)
Here's what I don't understand. Also in Device Manager, if I look at the
properties of each Disk Drive and each DVD/CD-ROM Drive, I see:
1) C is listed as location 0 (0)
2) D is listed as location 1 (1)
3) E is listed as location 0 (0)
4) F is listed as location 1 (1)
What does 0 (0), or 1 (1) designate? Is it simply where the device is
located on the bus (master/slave), without regard to primary or secondary
IDE Channel? If so, why repeat the location, i.e. 1 (1)?
Thanks.

- How can I speed up loading user settings on login?
-
My Win XP SP3 PC is showing signs of its age and is slowing down. I have
improved things to some extent using msconfig to sort out start-up
programmes and processes etc, and have tweaked things further with Process
Explorer.
However things are still extremely slow once the user has logged on, it's a
family PC with 4 accounts. How can I tell what is going on after I have
logged into my account? There's lots of chatter from the drive, but it
takes and age before I see my desktop in full and am able to do anything.
TIA.

- Sharing between XP & Win7: workgroups vs. homegroups?
-
Okay basic question here, are what were known as "workgroups" in XP and
earlier, now known as "homegroups" in Vista and later?
Why do you need to set passwords when creating a homegroup, when there
was none needed with workgroups? If you want to connect to an XP machine
with workgroups, do you need to disable or enable homegroups? Will a
password-enabled homegroup work with a non-passworded workgroup?

- Error launching programs in Program Files or shortcuts
-
So my computer didn't shut down properly one night and I got an error
message. When I rebooted my computer all seemed fine except when I tried to
launch a program via a shortcut or use the shortcut icons under the "Start"
button, I'd get a weird result. Instead of launching the program I would get
a new folder saying "Open with....." with a bunch of other programs to
launch it like Photoshop, Word, etc. instead of recognizing the programs own
launcher. I can browse the folders and finally find the right .exe file but
some programs are still not running properly even when I select it through
this "Open with....." method. Something is obviously corrupted but the
computer still works. I'd rather not reinstall everything unless I have to.
Any ideas on what to fix?

I cannot attach a folder to an e-mail using either MSN or AOL mail. I can
only attach individual files.I know that in the past I was able to attach
folders. I may have been using an earlier version of IE.
I get a message above the e-mail (in yellow yellow bar)- Viruses or unsafe
files were detected in one or more attached files. The following
attachments were removed or cleared then it gives the name of the document
and says lnk (removed) and
I get messages on my desktop from MSN - Access to the following potentially

I'm not sure what is going on here. Do I have to turn of the McAfee e-mail

I am running XPHome, SP3, with all important security updates. I'm also
running IE6 and FFox 3.5.7.
The following has just appeared in my Automatic Updates window:
"Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family
Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86"
If I go to Add/Remove programs, I see I have Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.
When I go to the Microsoft KB to see what this update fixes, I really don't
understand it. It also shows that this update has two known issues, both
of which have fixes.
I use my pc for general use, i.e. email, Word, Excel, browsing, OExpress 6,
and some photo/video applications. Do I really need to install this
update?

- System Restore and registry saving
-
Hello
After some bad computer troubles lately I was advised to daily use the tool
called "System restore"
So I made sure to set a new point of System restore each evening before I
shut the machine for the day, and I could see those points highlighted on
the system restore page.
BUT, when I tried today to restore the machine to a selected point, after
much screen flashes and other acrobatics it comes back and tell me that the
system can NOT restore the machine to the selected point. So much for this
lovely tool.
Then I was told that "Registry save" and restore later is a better choice
but I need some info about doing it.
I know how to get to the registry page.
Without touching anything I browsed the registry for some two hours and saw
how immense is this marvel, and I also noticed that a given program can be
found in almost all the keys and in dozens of folders, sometimes under
cover-up of a different name. (Probably the maker of this program doesn't
want you to delete it).
However, on the registry main page,
1) If I highlight the tag "My computer" at the top and order it to save,
does it mean it will save the registry of the entire computer?
And:
2) Later if I want to restore it to that date, is it enough to click the
relevant icon and the entire registry goes back to that date?
Is there any thing you can add to help or warn me about my actions?
Thank you

- PC Dead, XP HD to new box - BUT USB Keyboard??
-
My XP PC died. I bought a new PC, Exchanged HD's, but XP will not
complete boot up, It gets to recognizing there is new hardware and asks:
"New hardware found, do you want to Install??" And " Do you want broadband
or Dial-up?"
The Old XP PC had PS/2 Keyboard & PS/2 mouse. New has USB Keyboard & mouse.
I would suspect that is at least the 'new hardware' found. I can't answer
the question as the new PC does not pass the input from USB input to the old
XP system.
IS THERE, a way to use the new PC's Windows 7 64bit home system to "Fix"
the XP system?? I.E. I have all the recovery files, but if I run the
recovery DISCs, It will kill my exitin Registry.
>>> Is there a way to place the USB drivers AND have the XP system 'find' them as it is coming up (rather than ask me)? & if you know which drivers?
I have access to all the XP files, but - Windows 7 doesl not run many of my
older softweare products, or allow me to install drivers for my hardware!!
- I will need to dual boot to XP when I want those items. All I need is
to have XP accept the USB Keyboard & mouse to have it work.
Thanks

- Newly installed SDRAM is only partially showing up.
-
Hi,
Sorry if this isn't precisely Windows related,
I just added two 1-GB sticks of SDRAM into my Dell computer to bring it up
to 4 GB, but it's only showing up under System as 3.25. Which is interesting.
My tower has four RAM slots. When I bought the computer it had four 256 MB
sticks (1 GB), two of which I replaced with two 1 GB sticks a while back
(2.5) and today I replaced the remaining two 256 MB sticks with two 1 GB
sticks to bring it up to 4 GB.
When I turned my computer back on, I was notified that my computer's memory
had changed, giving me the choice to continue or run setup. I chose to
continue.
I am aware that RAM has to be installed in a certain order and as far as I
know I did so, but 3.25 is a strange number. My specs are: Dell Dimension
E510, Pentium 4 3.0 ghz, Windows XP Pro. I bought the RAM off of the Dell
website.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

- Newly installed SDRAM is only partially showing up.
-
Hi,
I just added two 1-GB sticks of SDRAM into my Dell computer to bring 2.5 GB
up to 4 GB, but it's only showing up under System as 3.25. Which is
interesting.
My tower has four RAM slots. When I bought the computer it had four 256 MB
sticks, two of which I replaced with two 1 GB sticks a while back (2.5) and
today I replaced the remaining two 256 MB sticks with two 1 GB sticks to
bring it up to 4 GB.
When I turned my computer back on, I was notified that my computer's memory
had changed, giving me the choice to continue or enter setup. I chose
"continue".
Everything seems to be running smoothly but it only shows up as 3.25 GB in
System. Is this because I accidentally skipped setup when prompted? Did I
perhaps install wrong? I am aware that RAM but be installed in a certain way
and as far as I can tell I made no mistakes. 3.25 is a strange number.
Any advice?
My specs:
Dell Dimension E510, Pentium 4 3.0 ghz, Windows XP Professional, and I
bought the new RAM off of the Dell website as per my system specs, don't know
the precise name. Any help would be appreciated.

- Search Companion missing file
-
I'm helping a friend whose laptop was infected with a virus/trojan. We
disinfected using MalwareBytes anti-malware app. She now has a functioning pc
again...but...
When I try to use the search feature in Windows XP, I get an error message
that reads "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found.
You may need to run Setup."
I tried to reinstall via the srchasst.inf file in the Windows\inf folder
(right-click - install) but it said 'The file "msgr3en.dll" on the Windows XP
Home Edition Service Pack 3 CD is needed.
The problem is that I can't reinstall it because Windows XP came
preinstalled on her laptop, and she was not given a CD. I tried to download
a version off the internet, but when I point to that file when installing via
the srchasst.inf file, I get a an error window that says Installation failed.
The system is running XP home edition with sp3.
Can anyone suggest another avenue to get the search companion running again?

Mitch

- System keep rebooting and safe mode is not working

hello. i run xp and in trying to boot up, the system shuts down and restarts
again and again. I have tried "last good config," but it makes no difference.
I try to access safe mode, but it won't let me get further than trying - it
too returns me to constant rebooting. i chose 'no reboot on failure,' and
got the following stop error: 0x0000007B (0x79BB528, 0xc0000000034,
0x00000000, 0x00000000)
i ran a scan disk and it revealed no disc problems and i installed the drive
as a slave and ran malware bytes and super antispy - they found nothing. i am
afraid my hd might have contracted a boot-sector virus. i do not know.
any ideas hoe to continue?
thanks.

Hi! 18 Feb
On one machine (WinXP SP2), sometimes, for some reason all running services
get shown as windows (consoles?). This appears to happen when the 'Show

We then have to restart the machine to clear this.
I do not know what caused this, or when.
I have never seen this problem anywhere, nor could I get any information on

Any advice?

- Utility needed to Verify ISO image with burned disc
-
Dear Gurus,
I understand that there are some CD-burning softwares which have built-
in verifying routines to verify the burned disc with the ISO image
file.
However, I am looking for a stand-alone utility that can do the same
thing.
Which is, taking an ISO-image file on the hard disk, and verify it
with a CD (or DVD) that is inside a CD/DVD drive.
Is there such a utility available?
All suggestions are most welcome !
Thank you for reading.

I'm running XP and I had SP3 before I attempted to do a repair of Windows.

cannot perform any other function but install.
question 1: Since I had SP3 on the system already. Shouldn't the operating
system have the SP3 files stored in the C:\ drive? Why can't I just type the
path to where the SP3 files are located?
question 2: Is there a place where I can download in Microsoft whatever I

- Windows Patch Leaves XP Users With Blue Screen of Death
-
Windows Patch Leaves XP Users With Blue Screen of Death
Gregg Keizer, Computerworld
Feb 11, 2010 9:01 am
http://www.pcworld.com/article/189110/windows_patch_leaves_xp_users_with_blue_screen_of_death.html?tk=nl_dnx_h_crawl
Tuesday's security updates from Microsoft have crippled Windows XP PCs
with the notorious Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), users have reported on
the company's support forum.
Complaints began early yesterday, and gained momentum throughout the
day.
"I updated 11 Windows XP updates today and restarted my PC like it
asked me to," said a user identified as "tansenroy" who kicked off a
growing support thread . "From then on, Windows cannot restart again!
It is stopping at the blue screen with the following message: 'A
problem has been detected and Windows has been shutdown to prevent
damage to your computer.'"
Others joined in with similar reports. "There is something seriously
wrong with the update. I can't even open in safe mode," said
"Ghellow," referring to Windows diagnostic mode that's often a last-
chance way to boot a PC.
"I am not very happy with Microsoft as I got to work this morning to
find my helpdesk flooded with messages that the PC has the famous Blue
Screen," said "brawfab."
"I had to go to work and use my Mac to get online to find out what is
going on with the XP updates last night," complained "moosewalk" on
the same thread. "I am this much closer to switching over to a Mac for
good."
The support thread, which was first noticed by security blogger Brian
Krebs , contained more than 120 messages as of early Thursday, making
it the third-longest on the Windows Update support forum. The thread
had been viewed more than 2,800 times since its inception.
Several users posted solutions, but the one laid out by "maxyimus" was
marked by a Microsoft support engineer as the way out of the perpetual
blue screens. To regain control of their PCs, users were told to boot
from their Windows XP installation disc, launch the Recovery Console
and enter a series of commands.
Unfortunately, that left netbook users out of luck, since most of the
lightweight, inexpensive laptops lack an optical drive, and so can't
boot from an XP installation disc. "Are there any fixes for netbooks,
or am I essentially screwed for the time being?" asked "HimDen."
Several users tentatively identified the MS10-015 update as the one
which triggered the BSOD, and claimed that uninstalling that security
fix -- which was labeled as KB977165 -- returned their PC to working
condition.
MS10-015 , one of 13 security updates Microsoft issued Tuesday,
patched a 17-year-old kernel bug in all 32-bit versions of Windows.
The vulnerability went public three weeks ago when a Google engineer
disclosed the bug and posted proof-of-concept attack code.
This was not the first time that a Microsoft update has incapacitated
Windows PCs. Two years ago, a set of updates for Vista sent an unknown
number of machines into an endless series of reboots . Similar
problems stymied users who tried to upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack
3 (SP3) in May 2008, and others attempting to upgrade from Vista to
Windows 7 last October.
Microsoft was not immediately available for comment early Thursday.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS09-072.mspx
B. MS10-002
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS10-002.mspx
Both deal with IE 6, 7 and 8.
Question:
1. Do I apply *BOTH* patches or just one of them?
2. If only need apply only one patch, do I apply A (MS09-072) or B
(MS10-002)?
Please help !
Much oblige !!

- Windows XP 64 - Blue Screen of Death - no event logging?
-
Hi all,
So I have set Event logging with small memory dump in XP 64 bit, in the
System Properties/Startup & Recovery, in order to diagnose a BSOD in
win32k.sys, page_fault_in_nonpaged_area.
Unfortunately, when my PC blue screens, no event is written, and no minidump
appears in the minidump folder.
I have tried this both with letting the PC reboot automatically, and without.
How do I ensure a minidump appears, and a system log entry is written?
Cheers
Vandervecken
PS Crossposted purposely in XP 64 bit discussion, and accidentally in XP
Media Center.

- Windows Updates of Late - KB977165 and More
-
I am posting this thread because of the problems reported in this
Newsgroup about KB977165 and possibly others, released appx 2/10/2010.
Most reported by professionals about "clients" getting the BSoD.
Note the thread...
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support/browse_thread/thread/cc25c907ca9538cc/6b76aef1e5eb087c?hl=en&lnk=gst&q=help+network#6b76aef1e5eb087c
...about NOT being able to "Disable Network Connection," which
occurred after the 2/10/2010 updates.
A quote from one post on KB977165:
"I had a problem with the downloads, also. I checked the ISC.SANS.ORG
website and found the suggestion to remove the atapi.sys and replace
it with the one in the SP3 download. I did that and things are back to
normal, including the KB977165 file and the rest of the updates. Hope
it helps you."
One has to wonder, as another post stated, "what's going on at
Microsoft." Especially after reading the above quote.
Just how well DOES Microsoft test updates? As evidenced by what has
happened, NOT will.
All software engineers/departments need to take into account that
WORLD-WIDE legacy hardware is the rule.
Not everyone in the world has updated hardware. I would bet the
majority do not. Therefore any software like Microsoft updates NEED to
be test against legacy hardware.
For example, the "Disable Network Connection" problem I suspect is due
to the VIA Rhine II Network Adapter (on-board) on my home system. That
is, did Microsoft test updates on systems using old VIA Chipsets?
Especially considering that VIA is prevalent in Europe.

- Autoplay for Pictures Not Populated
-
I inserted my XD card in to my card reader today and the autoplay pop up
window asking what I wanted Windows to do was blank. For Video, Music and
Mixed content the options are there but not for Pictures - it is just blank.
I have tried running autofix.exe but this has not fixed it. Any ideas? Is
this a Microsoft problem or has something else caused this? It worked fine
until today. Thanks.

- extracting data from an old to new hard drive - no data appearing.
-
there are several (and better) ways to do this, but here is the reality: i
recently installed a new hard drive after my previous one got locked into an
endless reboot cycle. i found no solution to help with this, so i decided to
start from scratch. i installed a REAL version of xp onto my new hd to get a
way from the oem version that was installed on my old hd. so now my new hd
is doing fine, BUT i wish to take data off of my old hd and transfer it to
the new one.
i installed my old drive as a slave on my pc and tried to open it, but to
know avail. i will mention that this drive still has my oem xp o/s on it -
which is probably why it no data is visible - it is encrypted from a
different copy of xp (the oem one). and i think that this results in all my
data files mostly showing as empty. however one doc folder pops up a 'access
denied' window.
going back to the issue of my old hd locking up in a rebooting cycle, i am
aware that viruses or malware can cause this to happen. my hope was to
transfer over my data and then scan the old hd for anything that might be
causing the rebooting to happen. but this is a separate issue from the data
extraction effort i need to focus on.
any ideas how to 'de-cloak' my data from the previous hd, so i can transfer
my data to the new one?
thanks in advance for your suggestions.

- Access Denied
-
My WinXP computer is stuck in a reboot loop from the Advanced Start-up
options menu (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Last Known Good Config,
etc). I removed my hard drive and connected it to another WinXP machine
with a USB/IDE adapter kit.
When I try to access my User Account, which is password protected, I get an
Access Denied pop-up. I want to save my data before reformatting the hard
drive. Is there any around this Access Denied problem?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

- HP Pavillion a1632x
-
I had a HP Pavillion a1632x running WinXP64 media ed which was hit by a
virus. I could not recover via the recovery mode.
I made the mistake of installing Vsta (updating was unavailable).
Is there a way to access the old registy using the remote registy call call
it WinXP1.reg ?
If I were to install XP from scratch, export my registry into a file
WinXP2.reg, import WinXP1.reg, and then overwrite the latest from
WinXP2.reg, would I get a useable system

I am running Windows XP w/AVG antivirus. I somehow got a virus that shows up

navigate to any programs such as spybot or malwarebytes' anti-malware w/o a
pop up box telling me "the application cannot be executed. the file mbam.exe
is infected. do you want to activate your antivirus software now?". I also
can not run my task manager or registry to try to remove this virus. the
threat is called WIN32/NUQEL.E -- any help would be very much appreciated.

- FAT(32) media sometimes accessible, sometimes not -- strange solution
-
I wrote earlier of a problem on one machine with XP Home SP3. It would
not read floppies of FAT32-formatted thumb drives that were readable on
other machines. I could format a floppy on this machine, but DIR claimed
that it did not have a recognizable file system. RMB -> Properties
showed the file system as RAW.
Now I find that this happens only if the machine is booted with no
FAT32-formatted media attached. If I boot up with a FAT32-formatted
external drive or thumb drive in place, it can read them and will
continue to be able to read FAT(32) media even when the one(s) present
at boot time has/have been detached.
Is this behavior normal? If not, how do I remedy it?

- I've gained an operating system !
-
I ran my XP CD to repair an Explorer problem and now I've gained an operating
system.
When I switch on it now gives me the choice of selecting (1) 'Microsoft
Windows XP Professional' or (2) 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup'
Unfortunatly it defaults to the (2) unless I select (1). How can I remove (2)
so I go back to going straight into XP please?
Thanks

- Cleaning after a crash
-
Hello to all
Few days ago I lost the content of my second hard drive, an external one I
named "D". It was wiped so clean that even the disk partition gone and it
can't even be opened. However,
Since my "C" drive is smaller then the huge D, I used to install many
programs on D instead of C as usual.
Obviously Windows registered all the programs, regardless of their location,
on the ADD/REMOVE page.
I want to clean the ADD/REMOVE of all the lost programs but windows will not
do it as the programs are not there to be removed.
I remember long ago, a nice MVP produced a tiny program that do just that,
removing dead lines from the ADD/REMOVE but since I lost all my data, I
can't remember who it was.
Does any one know any thing on this topic?
The same goes for the registry that no doubts is full of obsolete entries
that need cleaning. I know, it is not hard to get a registry cleaning
programs now a days but I have bitter experience with these full programs
and I need something partial or a bit of know how to get into the registry
and do some safe cleaning.
Many thanks to whoever can help me

- Can't log into Windows XP.
-
I had a virus on my computer called 'Internet Security 2010' which i tried to
remove with 'AVG Free 9.0'. My anti-virus software required a restart in
order to remove all of the virus's. I restarted and now when i try to log
into my profile it logs in for 3 seconds and logs out before I can do
anything. I tried logging into every advanced login option, IE safemode /w
command prompt and all of the other options. I can not log in with
administrator either. I read some things online that said to boot from the
Windows xp CD. I tried this and got a message on the blue screen saying my
computer is infected and it must shut down to prevent further damage. Is
there anyway to bypass the login screen or get to a command prompt to
reformat? PLEASE HELP!@@!!@

- WinXP Pro to Student version Win 7 Ultimate
-
My son's computer currently runs Windows XP Pro SP3 and he's looking to go
to the student version of Windows 7 Ultimate. We've run the advisor and the
machine is more than capable of handling the change but we're a bit baffled
by some conflicting information on the http://www.software4students.co.uk/
website.
The Microsoft Upgrade Path Chart shows that a move from Windows XP to
Windows 7 Ultimate can be done, NOT as an in-place upgrade, but ONLY as a
"custom install". A custom install is also known as a clean install and can
be used to completely replace your existing operating system or you can
perform a custom (clean) install if your computer does not have an existing
OS or you want to multi-boot.
The software4students website says this:
*For the academic license version to install correctly, customers are
advised to have a previous Windows OS currently installed on their computer
or laptop.*
*S4S & Microsoft advise customers to choose the upgrade DVD's "Custom
Installation" option when available rather than "In-Place Upgrade" and to
back up all important files before beginning.*
The two paragraphs above seem (to me at least) to conflict with each other.
When installing an OS, I've always booted from the CD, formatted the hard
drive and then done the installation - that's what I consider a clean
install, or in Win7-speak, presumably a custom install.
Can anyone confirm - do you have to have an existing OS (which I would
consider as an in-place upgrade) or can you do a clean install (freshly
formatted hard drive) to install the student/academic version?
TIA,
Dave

- ms virtual PC
-
I've been interested in dabbling with it for a very long time. I've read
what info I have and it is not clear if it can be installed on NTFS. I'm
running XP pro sp3+ on that.
Oddly, I can see the files on FAT32 partition.
\I did see in the notes that virtual pc can access multiple drives or OS
installed on another drive. Can a FAT 32 OS be installed within virtual PC?

- xp does not boot after virus cleanup and repair
-
My xp pro Dell 4550 with a 60 GB IDE hard disk got infected by a virus and
would not boot - always got a blue screen during boot.
So took out thr hard disk and hooked it up to a laptop using an ide to usb
adapter and ran Mcafee virus checker which quarantined quite a few files. I
then put thedisk inthre original Dell and tried to repair the installation
using a Win XP installation CD.
The machine does not boot at all. After POST I get a black screen that
remains so for hours. I did a chkdsk /r but that made nodifference.
I tried hooking the disk to the laptop again but now it shows up as an
uninitialized disk in disk management and I cannot see the contents at all.
What are my choices otherr than to reinstall XP. What can I do to save my
data? If I use fixmbr in the recovery console will I lose my file system on
the disk?
Thanks
