- trouble booting windows XP from hiberation
-
I am having problems booting XP only from hybernation. Sometimes it
starts up as normal, but obviously there is a problem that needs fixing.
The computer runs as normal but only the first lettering appears with a
cursor on the screen. If I turn the computer off and on again it'll
start as normal from hybernation. I want to avoid switching the unit
completely off and on if I can.
Can somebody please help me with this?

- IE8
-
I use XP and recently upgraded direct from IE6 to IE8. With IE6 I was able
to select a web address either from any piece of text or a highlighted
link,
then edit, copy and paste it directly into the browser address window.
However with IE8 I get as far as copying the text or link, but the paste
option is
not available (i.e. not shown in bold type) for me to enter in the browser
address window.
Is this a feature of IE8 or do I need to adjust my settings?

- Equipment Questions - Modem/Router
-
I posted earlier about Internet security problems. Thank you, "Daave", for
all your assistance. My computer is "well" now. However, I have a different
concern now. I contacted my ISP about my DSL modem/router (which I rent) and
about open ports I found in the grc.com scan. They refuse to close these
ports for me. I can't access the software because my ISP has the password.
Last night my husband's laptop (with a wireless connection) was repeatedly
attacked by a Trojan Horse. (The Internet was turned on but he was not using
the Web - he was using a program that is not an online one.) His antivirus
stopped and deleted all of them. But I'm concerned that these open ports are
a major part of the problem.
We are considering buying our own equipment. Can you purchase a combination
modem/router or would we need to get the modem from the ISP and get our own
router? I know the routers have their own firewall software that we could
access and set up. Or are we opening up a big "can of worms"?
I'd appreciate any information you could provide. I promise I won't make
this a long-drawn out thread, like before. I did get a lot of very valuable
information from that post, which I greatly appreciate.
Thank you.

- ntuser.dat corrupted, can it be repaired?
-
I logged in Monday and after typing my password, the computer reboots. I have
since logged in as local administrator and made new accounts, following the
MS procedures for copying information from the damaged account to the new
ones. I have been able to determine that the damaged account will work if it
has a default ntuser.dat file. The new accounts, conversely, crash if I put
the corrupted ntuser.dat file in them.
Since I have several programs that will take me days to reinstall (high end
engineering programs) and all the configuring to get my account setup the way
it was, is there anyway to repair the ntuser.dat file?

- Windows Picture and Fax Viewer - append/delete TIFF pages?
-
I've been getting used to Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and find that the
quality of the printouts is very good (actually on par with the originals
themselves!). I've been appending and deleting pages with something other
than this app and then using WPFV it to print. But I really need to do
everything all in WPFV but I just can't see where it allows me to add or
remove pages.
I'm required now to print out things double-sided but need the control that
printing first to TIF and then deleting/appending pages gives me since I can
put components of a project together that came to us separately. This way I
_quickly_ can comply with environmental guidelines in place yet get what I
need without printing header or other unwanted pages, etc., etc.
The only way I can see possible is when we go to print and to choose the
pages to print via the wizard but what a hassle. The writing is so small to
easily and quickly figure out what each page is and when there are a lot of
pages, yech. And if I choose the wrong pages, I'm stuck with the output.
Anyone know how to add/delete TIFFs with this? Nothing comes up in the help
pages and googling didn't bring up results, either.
Thanks. :oD

Windows XP SP3, Outlook 2003
I can shut down Outlook 2003. When I shut down Windows with Outlook running
it will not shut until I End Program as requlested by new box appearing.
Not related to this, I also have to end program SSMMgr.exe in the same way.
If I rename to SSMMgr.abc this notice does not appear but Outlook still has
to be End Program. I understand SSMMgr is Samsung printer control software.

- Chkdsk hung after finishing
-
I have a work issued laptop that has a "super user account" for support and
my account called admin (with reduced rights). My PC was acting a bit flaky
so I scheduled a chkdsk and rebooted. All went well and no issues were found.
The disk was pronounced clean and some other verbiage followed by .... (four
dots). That is as far as it went. hmmmm.... ok, so I tried it again....same
result. Knowing the support user ID and password I tried to boot into
safemode but the PC hung and "sounded" like it was performing the same chkdsk
in the background but no info was displayed. After about 4 hours the system
rebooted and tried to boot into safemode(?) but hung again at the four dots
after proclaiming my system drive as clean.
I then tried to boot off of a windows XP Pro CD but it would blue screen
after loading several drivers.
I have a Linux live CD with very limited tools on it and I know there is
data still on the drive and I cannot afford to loose it.
Suggestions?

- Removing old version of Office after installing new one
-
Up until about 6 months ago I was using Office XP. As my wife is a
teacher I took advantage of a special deal to buy Office 2007 and
installed that, but I didn't remove the old one as I wanted to make
sure everything worked ok.
I'd now like to get rid of the Office XP. Both are listed in the "Add
or Remove Programs" utility. Is it safe to use this to remove Office
XP or might it mess up Office 2007 in the process?
Thanks, David.

-
Microsoft is a bunch of crooks and imbeciles, burned my copy of xp.
After spending a whole Saturday afternoon re-installing Xp, because it no
longer worked, losing all previously installed programs and drivers in the process,
because it would hang in install in some unknown place, had to start on a clean disk,
and finally got it working with internet access,
when I started it again today, a week or so later, it decided that my Logitech mouse
was a 'MS mouse', and the cursor jumped all over the screen.
Had enough.
I would like to hit Bill Gates and Balmer in the face for making such a crap product,.
I have burned my MS xp disk in front of the camera.
And replaced the partition by reiserfs, will be used for data storage in Linux.
Thank God for Linux and may penguins walk all over Redmond.

- Mono Headset Microphone Very Low Volume
-
When I try to make a recording using Windows Sound Recorder, the result is
extremely low volume and considerable background interference. The green
recording line is all broken up.
The headset speaker on the other hand reproduces sounds and music
satisfactorily. The actions Iâ??ve taken and status of conditions is as follows:
My original headset was a Labtec. As these headsets are inexpensive I
purchased a replacement Logitech but the problem remains - eliminating the
headset functionality.
Iâ??ve marginally repositioned a number of times the microphone plug in its
jack to ensure good/proper contact but no change.
Iâ??ve uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Sound Recorder - no improvement
There are no conflicts in my Device Manager.
None of the playback volume controls are muted; theyâ??re all at their maximum
level
The recording volume controls are all at their maximum level and microphone
is selected
Iâ??ve tested audio in Windows Live Messenger. The headset speaker is clear.
When I try the mic, the volume line progresses with green and gets into
yellow, but I assume it should reach red and it doesnâ??t. At the same time as
speaking I get intermittent crackling through the headset speaker.
Iâ??ve upgraded the original onboard Matrox Wave Device driver with a later
C-Media driver (C-Media and Matrox appear to be linked in some way) - no
difference.
Iâ??ve raised the issue with my motherboard manufacturer (which is now some 6+
years old), MSI, who have recommended another C-Media driver. However, when I
tried to extract the file folder, a warning appears that neither CMNPROP>DLL
nor cmaudio.sys can be opened. Iâ??ve advised them of this and am awaiting a
reply.
In the meantime I've installed yet another C-Media driver - CM18768 version
5.12.8.1733 - and still the problem persists
This now really has me stumped and I would very much appreciate any advice I
can get. Is it possible that my codec motherboard component could have
developed a fault?

- Need Driver Help after re-installing XP Pro!!
-
I was having some problems with my (somewhat old) Dell Dimension D600 laptop
so I decided to do a clean install.
Everything went well except now my Device Manager shows no drivers (question
marks) for:
Ethernet Controller
Network Controller
PCI Modem
Video Controller
I have no chipset install disk for this computer so using my other computer,
I went to the Dell web site and downloaded what I thought were a series of
drivers. The file is named DellDriverDownloadManager.application. I then
copied this file to my Dell laptop but it will not open except as a text
file in notepad.
My question - how can I install these drivers? If I double click this same
file on my other PC, it will ask me if I want to do an install (which I
don't want to do on that PC).
Suggestions greatly appreciated.

- Question on XP certification
-
I need to have at least one Microsoft certification and thought
easiest for me would be based on Windows XP. In the old days there
were MCP's. I assume I need the equivalent of an MCP for Windows XP?
Can anyone offer any guidance on what books to buy?
The requirement says:
Pass an online assessment once every two years.
On MS website it shows:
Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Windows XP Operating System
Exam 70-271
Supporting Users and Troubleshooting Desktop Applications on a Windows
XP Operating System
Exam 70-272
Can I just do one of these?
What books?
I would really appreciate any help. I know that getting good guidance
before I start will pay dividends :)

knowledge I might add). Was wondering if there is something specific I need
to do to Eliminate the Router and just use the modem for my connection, any
help or advice would be great :)

- Cannot boot to Safe Mode or otherwise.
-
I have a Gateway laptop I'm working on for a friend so I don't have complete
history. The computer will not boot even when I try to boot to Safe Mode. It
gets past the place where is lists all the drivers that were loaded, then
goes to a blank screen.
I tried a Repair install, with no change in behavior.
I tried the process from MS in article Q307545 to recover from a corrupted
registry, still no change.
I added the /bootlog option to the boot.ini file so I could see the full log
of the attempt to boot to Safe Mode.
I have backed up the disk in my desktop and then did a full install from my
copy of WinXP Home SP2. That did work and I could boot. This tells me I have
a good system hardware wise.(unless I'm overlooking something)
Problem with this solution is:
1. I don't have the original install disks so I'd loose all apps on the
laptop.
2.I can't use the product key on the labtop because I believe the key is
only valid for an OEM version of Windows.
3. My key is already in use on my desktop system.
4. Is there a way to rebuild the MBR when the disk has the D:\Recovery
partition on it?
The ntbtlog.txt file is not helpful any further.
Questions:
1. Are there procedures to troubleshoot further into the boot process?
2. Is there more detailed logging that I can access from the disk? I have a
way to remove the disk and mount it on my desktop.
3. Is there a registry key or keys that I can gleen all the files required
for booting the system? I have a backup of the good boot partition so I could
peruse that if possible.
My last desperate attempt was to move all the \Windows\system32\drivers to
another location and then put only those that list as loaded in the
ntbtlog.txt file back into the drivers dir. Well, I'm sure there are required
files that aren't there. So now it just reboots at about the point it would
hang. I can put all the files back.
Any suggestions for troubleshooting this?
Thanks,
John S.

- Recovering Registry Data?
-
Hi,
For no apparent reason, the laptop crashed & rebooted itself. During
the reboot process, received message that missing registry is missing
and to ?CHKDSK?. I didn?t get the full message because it wasn?t up
viewable long enough.
I did conduct a ?CHKDSK? without Adminstrator rights & now get the
following message:
?One of the files containing the system?s Registry data had to be
recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was
successful?.
I've been told that I need to run a "CHKDSK" through Adminstrator
rights status first.
How or what are the commands to I get Adminstrator rights through DOS
window, so I can run the CHKDSK.
Running Windows XP
Or, is this not the issue or could this be other propspective
issues?
Thanks

- Alternative Logon Screen Not Working
-
I'm trying to log into the Admin account on a Windows XP machine.
Normally I would use the CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the alternative logon
screen. But for some reason on this particular device it is not
working.
I can hit CTRL+ALT+DEL over and over and over... The need logon screen
never appears. So I am unable to log into the machine as Admin.
I'm aware I can 'unhide' the Administrator account from the Welcome
screen, but I don't want to do this...
What would cause the CTRL+ALT+DEL not to bring up the Logon Screen??

- Canon PIXMA iP4600 & XP problem
-
Printer works fine from the computer it's attached to. Other computers can
print to this printer over the network. No problems.
However... just /one/ XP Home computer can't use this printer. On that
/one/ machine, you can see the printer if you specifically search for the
host computer in My Network Places, but you can't connect to the printer.
When you try, you get the error dialog: "The operation could not be
completed. Either the printer name...".
If you try to use Start>Settings>Printers and Faxes>Add Printer, the
printer never shows up at all.
Trying to install the printer using the Canon software doesn't work either,
also on account of the printer refusing to show itself.
New XP installation. All Windows Updates applied. Firewall off. Network
access otherwise just fine.
So why doesn't this machine see the printer when nobody else has any
trouble?

- Strange behavior of the Task Bar in XP Pro
-
Hi. Have XP Pro SP3, AMD 3200 proc, large disk, 1 gig RAM. Plenty of
horsepower. Applications running and called from the taskbar or systray are
exhibiting some very odd behavior. I'm looking for a reg tweak perhaps....?
Let's say I pull up some pictures in Windows Explorer. I double click on
one, and the Windows Office Picture Manager launches. At the top there's a
button used for calling for a print. This launches the Photo Printing Wizard
(PPW). The cursor is laying on "Next". Fine. If I mouse away and out of
the PPW frame, the frame looses focus and dismisses to the Task Bar. And
that's where things get interesting. If I mouse to PPW up from the Task Bar,
it appears -but - the moment I move off of the Task Bar, the PPW frame
returns to the Task Bar thwarting my effort to continue printing. Through
experimenting, I can right
click on the PPW on the task bar which calls up a small menu (Move / Close),
then, without clicking I'm able to mouse up to the frame and continue the
wizard. Now, if I "Open With" Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, and call PPW
from its Print button at the bottom, PPW works fine.
It's moving the mouse off the running app frame and then the dismissing to
the Task Bar, that's the killer here. Also, I can use Alt-Tab to task switch
to the PPW. But then if I move off the frame, we're back to goofy.
Interestingly, while in Windows Explorer, if I right click on a picture and
invoke Print, the PPW appears but does NOT dismiss to the task bar when I
mouse outside the frame.
Now I was thinking the problem was with the PPW app. But no! I have
another app running over in the systray, that exhibits the same behavior. If
I quickly move the mouse REAL fast from the icon to the open app frame, it
does work. But any slower movement off the notification area, kills the open
window and I have to go back and left click again. Right click on the
systray app, reveals its second "right click" "menu selections. Selecting
something there allows me to go to the open focused app frame and use it.
So although one might think there's something with the default behavior of
PPW that needs to be adjusted, it appears that the behavior is exhibited in
other applications off the taskbar/systray. Anyone here can show me a setting
or reg tweak to eliminate this silliness?
Thanks folks. Happy Thanksgiving, too.
Note: This is NOT cross posted. I've gone to the Windows Printing and Fax
group and left a message there. TU.

- Taking ownership of HD with different OS
-
My boyfriend just bought a new pc running Vista and needs to get files off of
the old HD with XP Pro. He's installed the old HD (drive J) into the new pc -
when he attempts to explore drive J he gets the access is denied message. I
told him about taking ownership and disabling simple file sharing, but he's
having a problem because the Vista interface is completely different...is the
procedure a different one if the hard drives have different OS's?

- robocopy - XP kit
-
I'm using the robocopy from XP. http://ss64.com/nt/robocopy.html
I want to the sync files/directories between source and destination.
I want it to skip if the destination files/directories already exist.
To speed up the sync, I use /XO option but it's not doing what I want.
I observe is that I have 300MB files, it will take a long time to sync
even thought both source and destination are match exactly.
I try the command again and again. It's not skipping, same result of
length in syncing.
What am I doing? Thx.
robocopy.exe C:\source D:\destination /MIR /R:3 /NP /NS /NC /NFL /NDL /
XO
/XO : eXclude Older - if destination file exists and is the same date
or newer than the source - don't bother to
overwrite it.

- Cant Restart XP Home Edt / Desktop doesnt reload / Blank Screen
-
Thank you All in advance for your responds.
My laptop froze and I had to restart it using the on/off button. During the
reboot, I saw the windows logo showing on my screen while loading just like
normal, however, my desktop never reloaded. Now, It appears a blank black
screen after the reloading process. No error messages either. I push the F8
button to access the "advanced options menu" during the restart. I tried safe
mode, Last Known Good Configuration, Start Windows Normalls but none of those
options worked. I didnt want to get into more technical stuff without an
expert's offers for alternative solutions. I want to find a solution without
loosing any documents in my computer. I would appreciate if you could please
send me your recommendations. Thank you
Now, on my Advanced Options Menu, i see the following:
"
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration
Directory Restore Mode (Windows Domain Controllers only)
Debugging Mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu
"
PS: My computer has the Windows XP Restore CD installed. It came like that
from the factory without a CD. I can still access to it somehow though if i
need to do system restore. (would i loose word, excel, and picture files? I
dont care about loosing some programs)

- Hard Drive Failure - Happy Ending
-
In general I seem to be able to avoid the problems that people post
about here...but I'm not immune to PC trouble.
Last night my computer did not boot. I discovered that the BIOS was not
detecting either of my (ancient IDE) hard drives.
The BIOS was fine: It was detecting my other hardware and the clock
showed the right time. I could feel gentle vibrations from both hard
drives and the cooling fans were working, so my power supply was okay.
I swapped my IDE cable for a new one...no help. Motherboard damaged?
Perhaps, but not likely, unless my UPS failed.
That left the hard drives themselves. I removed my boot drive and
started the computer with only my storage drive and - voila - it was
detected. That meant the electronics in my boot drive had died, and
since it was first on the ribbon cable, neither drive was detected.
The rest was easy: Buy a new drive and restore the old drive from a disk
image made only 12 hours previously.
So what is the point of this post, besides boasting? The point is that
even a non-geek like me can solve most any computer problem with
methodical troubleshooting and a current backup.

- sfc won't run, browers crahes
-
at first it start out with a virus effecting win xp. it stop mcafee fro
scanning and then i download superantispyware from another computer an
loaded over to this one since i can't download, if i do the browe
crashes. then somehow superanitspyware won't work so i did a lot o
restarting to make it work and it remove the virus but after that i
won't open again. i also try to reinstall mcafee but it won't let me, i
crashes all the time.
then suddenly all my free space was taken, if i remember right i
should be around 17gb or less. i end up with only 4gb. so i went throug
a lot of removing to get it to 12gb.
i then try to go into safe mode and can't. i got a blue scree
directing that an error happen, 0x0000007B. then i got into another saf
mode, forgot what it's called. through that safe mode i can run SAS
mcafee but they found no virus.
then i try to run SFC /scannow and i got an error, 0x000007ba.
ever since then my brower have been extremely slow, although it's a bi
better now after removing the virus, but i still can't watch video i
will crashes most likely.
while the virus still ineffect, when restarting i would get thes
messages errors about not being able to read memory.
anyone got any ideas

- Strange problem with System Volume Information folder
-
So NAV, all of a sudden, keeps detecting (and fixing) a trojan in
there. And everytime I try to access that folder to look in it I get
the old: "access denied" message.
Even though I have said SHOW hidden files, DO NOT Hide protected
operating system files (Recommended) ... still the system won't let me
in.
Anyone have any clues what's up?
THanks
