- Taking ownership of HD with different OS
-
My boyfriend just bought a new pc running Vista and needs to get files off of
the old HD with XP Pro. He's installed the old HD (drive J) into the new pc -
when he attempts to explore drive J he gets the access is denied message. I
told him about taking ownership and disabling simple file sharing, but he's
having a problem because the Vista interface is completely different...is the
procedure a different one if the hard drives have different OS's?

- robocopy - XP kit
-
I'm using the robocopy from XP. http://ss64.com/nt/robocopy.html
I want to the sync files/directories between source and destination.
I want it to skip if the destination files/directories already exist.
To speed up the sync, I use /XO option but it's not doing what I want.
I observe is that I have 300MB files, it will take a long time to sync
even thought both source and destination are match exactly.
I try the command again and again. It's not skipping, same result of
length in syncing.
What am I doing? Thx.
robocopy.exe C:\source D:\destination /MIR /R:3 /NP /NS /NC /NFL /NDL /
XO
/XO : eXclude Older - if destination file exists and is the same date
or newer than the source - don't bother to
overwrite it.

- Cant Restart XP Home Edt / Desktop doesnt reload / Blank Screen
-
Thank you All in advance for your responds.
My laptop froze and I had to restart it using the on/off button. During the
reboot, I saw the windows logo showing on my screen while loading just like
normal, however, my desktop never reloaded. Now, It appears a blank black
screen after the reloading process. No error messages either. I push the F8
button to access the "advanced options menu" during the restart. I tried safe
mode, Last Known Good Configuration, Start Windows Normalls but none of those
options worked. I didnt want to get into more technical stuff without an
expert's offers for alternative solutions. I want to find a solution without
loosing any documents in my computer. I would appreciate if you could please
send me your recommendations. Thank you
Now, on my Advanced Options Menu, i see the following:
"
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration
Directory Restore Mode (Windows Domain Controllers only)
Debugging Mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu
"
PS: My computer has the Windows XP Restore CD installed. It came like that
from the factory without a CD. I can still access to it somehow though if i
need to do system restore. (would i loose word, excel, and picture files? I
dont care about loosing some programs)

- Hard Drive Failure - Happy Ending
-
In general I seem to be able to avoid the problems that people post
about here...but I'm not immune to PC trouble.
Last night my computer did not boot. I discovered that the BIOS was not
detecting either of my (ancient IDE) hard drives.
The BIOS was fine: It was detecting my other hardware and the clock
showed the right time. I could feel gentle vibrations from both hard
drives and the cooling fans were working, so my power supply was okay.
I swapped my IDE cable for a new one...no help. Motherboard damaged?
Perhaps, but not likely, unless my UPS failed.
That left the hard drives themselves. I removed my boot drive and
started the computer with only my storage drive and - voila - it was
detected. That meant the electronics in my boot drive had died, and
since it was first on the ribbon cable, neither drive was detected.
The rest was easy: Buy a new drive and restore the old drive from a disk
image made only 12 hours previously.
So what is the point of this post, besides boasting? The point is that
even a non-geek like me can solve most any computer problem with
methodical troubleshooting and a current backup.

- sfc won't run, browers crahes
-
at first it start out with a virus effecting win xp. it stop mcafee fro
scanning and then i download superantispyware from another computer an
loaded over to this one since i can't download, if i do the browe
crashes. then somehow superanitspyware won't work so i did a lot o
restarting to make it work and it remove the virus but after that i
won't open again. i also try to reinstall mcafee but it won't let me, i
crashes all the time.
then suddenly all my free space was taken, if i remember right i
should be around 17gb or less. i end up with only 4gb. so i went throug
a lot of removing to get it to 12gb.
i then try to go into safe mode and can't. i got a blue scree
directing that an error happen, 0x0000007B. then i got into another saf
mode, forgot what it's called. through that safe mode i can run SAS
mcafee but they found no virus.
then i try to run SFC /scannow and i got an error, 0x000007ba.
ever since then my brower have been extremely slow, although it's a bi
better now after removing the virus, but i still can't watch video i
will crashes most likely.
while the virus still ineffect, when restarting i would get thes
messages errors about not being able to read memory.

- Persistent Problem with USPS Shipping Assistant .Net Framework
-
When I try to launch the United States Postal Shipping Assistant I
get:
"the type initializer for
microsoft.practices.enterpriselibrary.exceptionhandling.exceptionpolicy
threw an exception."
and it does not launch.
I have uninstalled .Net Framework and reinstalled it, and this is the
error I get. I've also tried reinstalling Shipping Assistant.
When I google the error, it's mostly from programmers who are
discussing code, not for end users of others applications. No other
applications give me this error. I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 2.
I did try contacting the USPS but they couldn't help.
Anyone have any advice on this one?

- Clicking on File Type links is slow
-
When I'm clicking on links from webpages that startup other
applications, it seems like there is a long 5 or 10 second delay before
the application starts up. Before it used to start within 1 or 2
seconds. I notice that the hard drive is flickering wildly during this
time now.
I assume this has something to do with Windows' DDE service. I read
about a tool called DDESpy available with certain programming tool which
might let me track this down, but I don't know where to find it.

- Unable to install security program/referenced memory issue
-
Bear with me, this is the first time I have had to post. I am having an
issue installing McAfee antivirus on my mom's system. She is using Windows
XP (with no original program info or discs) and I recently uninstalled
Symantec due to an issue of letting a virus in. When I uninstalled, it asked
if I wanted to permanently the program and it's files. I inadvertently
clicked yes and voila, I messed up. I now can't get McAfee from Comcast to
install due to multiple, different "referenced memory" errors. Will Chkdsk
correct this? How can I correct this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

- PC seems to shutdown unexpectedly but looks on, i.e still has powe
-
Hi,
I have a desktop pc approx 5 years old. It has Windows XP Home edition with
service pack 2. It has a Intel (R) Celeron (R) CPU 3.06GHz and 992mb RAM. It
also has a Foxconn 661 7MI motherboard.
It has been working fine and yet the other day it suddenly seemed to go off.
This had happened before when it had overheated and after I hoovered/cleaned
it all out inside the tower it then contuinued to work fine once again.
This time however when I looked down at the power button it was still lit
and I could still hear it running. The monitor screen went black and said 'no
imput'. I tried to reboot it but I couldn't turn it off from the power button
as this didn't work. I had to turn it off from the switch at the back of the
pc.
After turning it back on again behind the pc and rebooting the computer it
worked fine again. The second time it did it later that day it would not
reboot. The power was on but you couldn't hear the beep as it booted. The
monitor echoed this fact as it was not picking up a signal.
After a third attempt after the cycle of power switches it booted normally
and did not do it again for 24 hours approx.
I cleaned the inside of the pc and removed the fan to ensure it was dust
free. It does not seem to do it at any set times and can go for a day or so
before the next episode.
I am at a loss as to what it could be. I have updated and ran all of my
virus/adaware/malware scans and all is well on that point.
Could it be my motherboard on the way out or could it be my hard drive?
Any help would be grately appreciated. I hope I have given enough details.
Regards,
Maria

Linksys Range Expander WRE54G and now none of my computers 2 desk and 1

I turned it off and received the same error msg.
The msg stated it did a physical dump and gave me the info:
STOP : 0X00000019 (0.00000020, 0X859f9A00, 0X 859A18, 0X1A030001)
One desktop gives the BSOD msg, another desktop doe not see the disc,
and one laptop gives the same BSOD BAD_POOL_HEADER msg. All are on a

Linksys says it is not the router. or range expander.....
Anybody have a clue?

- Infection messages?
-
XP Pro SP3
During the past few weeks, immediately after the initial Windows
screen with the blue bar running left right, and before the logon
screen, I get a blue screen with white messages. There are dozens of
them, all identical, which say something like:
Infection: docs and settings my name cookies/index.dat does not exist
and cannot be removed. (Pause is inoperative and the normal logon
screen appears immediately after.)
If I reboot at the logon screen instead of logging on, they have all
disappeared. CHKDSK on system disk shows a healthy disk.
I have Kaspersky 9 and have run MBAM SAS Asquared etc., nothing found.
What is causing these? (There's no anti-virus in my BIOS, BTW.)

- XP start up

I have a computer (Compaq) that is 1 year old and I have reformated

The only thing is when the computer starts I get the opening page

goes blank for around 2 seconds and the XP logo appears and XP loads.
I know that there should be information on that bit that is blank,
like a rolling screen of available hardware, yet it isn't there.
Is this the master boot record (MBR) or something else and how do I
get it to show on screen or should I not worry about that as
everything else seems fine.

Please be patient with me, as I really don't know that much abou
computers.
My computer seems to have major problems. It started when it woul
occasionally get a blue screen and tell me to restart. I didn't reall
know what to do, so I ran adaware and malwarebites and thought it wa
taken care of. Then it did it more frequently, and then one day i
wouldn't restart. Now it only starts in safe mode. I don't recall wha
it was, but something made me think that perhaps the problem was th
software for the new wireless adapter I installed. It made sense sinc
the problem started right after I moved, and my new house has wireless
so I needed the new adapter. Also, my roommate let me use her ol
desktop, and I installed the software on there and it has since done th
blue screen once. I just downloaded and installed a software update fo
it on her computer, so hopefully that's the answer.
Back to my computer. It tells me to run CHKDSK /F, but when I tr
that, it won't let me. It says it cannot lock the drive. I also trie
to uninstall the software for the wireless adapter, but I get error 171
saying something about the windows installer not working. I trie
re-registering it, but that didn't do anything. Any ideas would be muc
appreciated. Thank

How does one change the names of external drives in windows 7?
I renamed the drives in computer management, and they appear with the new

I made the changes (in computer management) logged in as administrator (I
think).

- Can`t access web after Windows update
-
This morning my wife`s computer installed automatic updates immediately upon
opening. After the update she tried to open her browser and got the message
of little or no connectivity to the internet. The message says unable to
connect to ip.I`ve spent several hours trying various fixes non of which have
worked. I`ve put on a static ip address and got the info that I am fully
connected but still cannot open any browser (IE or Firefox). I turned off the
firewall and still no help. Her computer is running XP Pro and is connected
to the internet through a Netgear router. Would appreciate if someone could
tell me what to do next. My computer running XP Home is connected with the
same router and running OK. Thank you, Malcolm Stockman

- Advice regarding an unusual "event" report
-
Event Type: Information
Event Source: HHCTRL
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1904
Date: 11/19/2009
Time: 9:31:11 PM
User: N/A
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 1904 ) in Source ( HHCTRL ) cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or
message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be
able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and
Support for details. The following information is part of the event:
about:blank, http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=45840.
I read the info on the linked page, but it meant nothing to me.
I am not on a network nor connected to a "remote computer" (as far as I
know).
I wonder if it could be related to doing online crossword puzzles at the
Washington Post, LA Times, and SF Chronicle. These events occur now and
then. In this case repeated three times at about 9:30. I think that's around
the time that I was doing the crosswords.
The events are labeled "information" only, not a warning, so they're
apparently not serious. Should I just ignore them?

- Blue screen after system restore
-
Hi,
Recently caught a google redirect virus on my Lenovo netbook. Couldn
get rid of it with any of the anti virus software I have so decided t
run a system restore.
Now it won't reboot, going through a continual loop of restartin
itself. Managed to get the blue screen up and it tells me the followin
in the tech info bit:
STOP: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0x86319c21, 0xF7A5FC44, 0xF7A5F940)
Anyone tell me what I can do next??
Thank

- High CPU usage...
-
I have a 8 year-old PC that has developed a strange problem. When it
first starts up it runs just fine, then after 5-10 minutes a process
called SYSTEM starts up and uses anywhere from 75%-95% of the CPU and
makes using the PC unbearably slow. Right now it's in the process of
applying 2 updates that are less than 5 Mb, and it's been working on
them for the last hour.
This isn't my usual PC for daily use, it's the one my children use. So
exactly what all they have done with is is something I really don't
know. Here are the specifics about the system
HP Pavilion 761c
1.9 Ghz Pentium CPU
2 Gb ram
Windows XP Pro SP3
SO any suggestions as to where to start looking?

- Pages loading without being prompted
-
Using WinXP Home and Firefox 3.5.5. I have a screen saver that comes on when
the computer is idle. I do not turn the computer off at any time. When I
roll the mouse to cancel the screen saver often I find the that the start
page or some other page has already loaded with no prompt. I delete them
and go on to use the computer but find the same thing happening too often.
How can I stop this from occurring? Thanks

- Window control icons not entirely visible upon maximize
-
Brand-new XP Pro machine. When I maximize any window, the title bar seems to
overrun the window, making the "X" icon in the upper-right corner invisible
(or, more correctly, I just can't see it, as if it's gone over the edge of
the desktop). I have no idea why this happens, as it didn't on my previous
XP machine, nor on my office XP Pro machine.
