- USB Compliant Keypad
-
Hello everybody. I have bought numeric keypad to my notebook. This is numeric
keypad from Targus. My OS is XP Home Premium. Problem is that I can't use it
;o
When I'm connecting it to my notebook, it says that I have to find driver
for USB Compliant Keypad... I've tried many times, but still it didn't find
that driver... Stranger thing is that on my "main PC" it works correctly...
Every advice will be helpful.

- Regestry Question, WinXP - Location of Start Menu Default
-
From doing OEM PK2 installs of WinXP I noted that the default folder
for the [Start] menu can be changed (it's one of the options).
The normal default for the [Start] menu = \Start Menu\Programs
So where in the WinXP Registry is this *default* locate?
I also note the same applies to the program folder default =
C:\Program Files
Where is this default located in the Registry?

- Dell Inspiron 1521 constantly reverts to default power settings
-
I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 running WinXP SP3 (and the latest BIOS from Dell)
that is connected to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse (the screen
remains closed and the display output is set to external monitor only via FN
keys). For whatever reason, over the past several weeks, the power settings
on the machine keep getting reset and reverting back to the standard
portable/laptop configuration, including causing the machine to go into
standby every night (which is not what I want because I have Norton Ghost set
up to backup the machine every night to a network drive). This never used to
happen before, but I can't figure out what has changed. I had previously set
up a customized power scheme (named Customized #1) that told the machine to
never go into standby, and when I set it to this, it seems to hold for a few
days, and then even though it still displays as being on Customized #1 power
scheme, the actual settings revert (such as 20 mins for standby instead of
Never).
Anyone have any suggestions on what I can try to prevent this, as it is
becoming extremely annoying! Thanks!

- Offline Files Issues

Hi,
Multiple times per day, I have an issue where I seem to lose the
connection to my server, which is the primary domain controller, file
server, SQL server, etc to my company. I can still make domain
requests, SQL queries, and other connections to the server, including
RDP, ping, etc.
For reference, a screenshot of what I'm seeing is here:

Server is Windows Server 2003 R2, and the workstation is XP SP3.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

- File Sharing Timeout Setting?
-
It appears that remote file reads on successive machines
work okay if no files have been read recently, but start
failing (requiring waiting and retrying) if there's been
recent activity.
XP Home (so there's a 5 file open limit, or something like
that).
Everything behaves as if the connection stays up longer
the more recently you've accessed a particular machine,
thus worsening the problem.
Is there a "disconnect quickly" parameter somewhere that I can
set to a short time, rather than its being adaptive as it
appears to be?

- Control Panel Security Center and Ad Remove
-
3-7-10
True or untrue. MPC if possible, Please address each issue. Many thanks.
I visited a web site and Security messages started popping up XP Internet
Security - 2010 Unregistered Version. and alot of related messages. your
computer is infected etc and a scan started running listing all kinds of
infections.
If I went to Control Panel and clicked on Security Center I was getting
messages re Firewall Off etc. Dell told me whatever spyware or a virus was
on my computer it takes over my Security Center.
McAfee told me it removed a trojin I opened McAfee and ran a scan and the
scan was OK. These items below appeared in the log
3/7/2010 real time scan Fake Alert-WwCec Repaired (removed)
3/7/2010 real time scan Exploit-PDF.bslstr Repaired (reoved)
2/28 Real time scan Generic PUP.xlbc Cannot be repaired (this in log twice)
I have McAfee via MSN and MSN told me to download Spysweeper. I did and it
removed Rouge Security Products and many cookies but I was still getting
security messages.
I downloaded Lavasoft Ad Aware and scanned and it removed 2 cookies.
At this point stopped getting messages and the Control Panel Security
Center shows everything OK I think it may actually have been the removal of
the Rouge Security Products that fixed it rather than the Ad Aware, it may
not have cleared it before I restarted the computer.
Can you explain the Security Center Messages? Were they real or spyware
invasions?
Also several days before this happened, I tried to download a program from a
web site ,fast start and it did not download properly but I could not remove
it from add remove. tried a system restore but that did not remove it
either. (see McAfee log 2/28 Generic PUP.xlbc Cannot be repaired (I tried
several ways to delete this download. In Add Remove, it is listed as
924PLC32. Supposedly a program to speed up my computer. Do you think this
was also spyware and part of the same problem? Would downloading it again
then trying to remove it possibably remove it completely?

- Wireless config acting up
-
I recently had my Verizon FIOS system rebooted by verizon due to a crash in
the system. I had two XP laptops and a Mac laptop all working on my wireless
network, using 128 bit encription. Since the reboot, I've had problems.
Verizon thinks it's a router issue, but I'm not sure what's going on. The
Mac works fine, the XP machines don't hold the wireless encription settings
for the router.
I am showing confusing screens on both machines. I've tried going back to
64 bit default settings on the router but that doesn't fix the problem. Both
my machines see the router. The wireless icon in the tray says the wireless
is not connected. IIf I open the wireless connection, I see the router. I
click on Change advanced setting and put in the key, and then I can connect.
However, the tray icon says not connected, and if I look at available
wireless connections, in the Choose a wireless network box, this network says
in the upper right "Not connected", but the text below says 'You are
currently connected to this network. To disconnect fromo the network click
Disconnect", and that button is live. I can get on the internet and do
things inspite of this pscyhophrenic dialog box and the tray icon that says
I'm not connected, but if I close my email or IE, I can't get back on and I
have to go through this whole thing again. My Mac doesn't have this problem.
Since both XP laptops are doing the same thing, I have eliminated Zone Alarm
as the problem, since it's only on one of the laptops. Both give the same
messages.
Another quirk: Windows Zero Config does not start automatically on one
laptop, since it interferes with my business network in my office. I have
been opening it manually as needed for wireless. However, right now, (and
since the resetting of the verizon router) I see the wireless networks even
when Zero Config is not running, and I get on the internet when I key in the
access code. If I start the Zero Config, it throws me off the net. Not sure
if this is a clue to anything, however.
Both machines are set to automatically update XP. Was there an automatic
update that might have done something here? The problem did not exit
Thursday evening, and I though MS updates were Tuesday events, so any updates
would have been in place with things working.
So, I'm stumped as to how to stabilize the two systems and get things
working again so the wireless network connections stay in memory and function
as they did before.
Thanks,

- Deleted files not in recycle bin (recycle bin was presumably too small)

I deleted some large files from D drive to recycle bin. I needed the

of the files were there. Presumably the recycle bin was too small t

couldn't find.
Please, does any one know how I could to recover the lost files? The

- Un-Install string lost
-
Hello to all
We all know those little programs that mis-behave and you can't kick them
out because they even lack the un-install string.
But one need not worry (I think) when installing a program from a big
reputable company as Intel but this is my problem.
I installed an Intel Camera program called "Intel create and share" that
isn't working at all. I tried to remove it via the ADD/REmove page but no
joy there. The program name do exist on the Add/Remove page but clicking
delete will not remove it.
I checked the program folder on the HDD and it has a sub folder named
"uninstall" but it is empty.
How to create, or find somewhere, such an Un Install string?
Alternately, manually removing the program folder with all its content will
leave behind few hunderds leftover in the registry. Any one have a good idea
how to go about it?
Thanks

- Boot problem
-
I have a boot up problem with my xp pro. I shut my computer down at night
and in the morning I get a grey screen at boot up, before anything shows. I
can hear the computer going thru the startup process with nothing showing on

twenty-five minute process). Once it is running I am able to restart without
any problem. It only happens after several hours of being shut down. I have
run diagnostics on the hardware, monitor, graphics card and system. All
pass. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to solve or where
to go for a solution?

My question is, is it possible to set up a hardware profile such that

- NTVDM has encountered a system error in 16 bit Windows Subsystem

I keep getting this error message and my computer has been freezing up and
running a lot slower. I have scanned it withMcAfee and Norton. I have
scanned also with an IOBit security scan for spyware and malware. The only
video software that we had downloaded we uninstalled. But, this still

The error message(pop-up) that comes up is:

I need help. I was thinking of re-installing Windows XP media center to see

this error does not happen on Windows 7 only XP and NT.
Thank you very much

- Sick machine, don't know what to do
-
This is a Sony Vaio laptop, bought new with XP installed. All patches,
service packs and upgrades are installed. it's regularly checked for malware.
I have used a registry cleaner (PC Tools Registry Mechanic) recently. Chkdsk
says both internal disks are fine. (They are actually two sectors on one
internal disk.)
The machine has two problems. They seem serious. Otherwise, it works
normally. I stream Netflix on it, no problem. The web browser works fine.
Problem 1 -- The Rhapsody application won't launch. It's installed on the C:
disk. It "encounters a problem and has to quit." I've uninstalled and
re-installed, with no benefit. I have a vague recollection that it works if
installed on the D: drive. I had to remove it, and decided to put it on the
boot drive. I haven't tried that lately.
Problem 2 -- If I search for a file name, or part of a file name, on the C:
drive, "Windows Explorer encounters a problem and has to quit." Searching the
D: drive causes no problems.
I have a feeling the machine is hosed or near-hosed, but I'm not quite ready
to give up on it. It does everything I need it to do, and I sometimes need a
Windows machine. I don't want to buy a new one if I can avoid it, or make
this one last another year or two. Normally, I use my Macintosh.
Before I give up on this machine, are there some standard maintenance and
repair things I should try? Do my problems sound like a familiar syndrome?
Thanks in advance.

- File Sharing
-
I rarely move/copy files across networks, so I'm not that familiar with
file sharing 'rules'. Long ago, I used to use NetBEUI and a hub <g>.
Yesterday I needed to move about 10GB of files from one machine A (XP
Pro) to machine B (XP). I have a wireless router with SSID "codenine".
Machine A connects to codenine wirelessly, and macnine B is hardwired to
the router. Once I changed the workgroup setting on both machines to
"codenine", we could see each other. Then I set up sharing.
I thought that if on machine A, I set C:\ to share, I'd be able to see
all of the folders on machine A, from machine B. I mean ALL the folders
(and files on partition C, not just the folders/files one level down.
But that wasn't the case.
I could see certain folders, but not all. What I wanted to see was all
of the folders in Documents and Settings\My Documents, such as My Music,
My Pictures, etc, but I couldn't by just sharing C:\. I had to set
sharing on My Documents and Settings.
Microsoft tells me:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040
"Through the Simple File Sharing UI, you can configure both share and
NTFS file system permissions at the folder level. These permissions apply
to the folder, all the files in that folder, subfolders, and all the
files in the subfolders."
This seems to be inconsistent with what I experienced.
What am I doing wrong or misunderstanding?
Thanks.

- disk mgmt query
-
I have a desktop system with two different sized HDs with both having the
identical xp media edition installed.
The problem is that windows is not allowing me to manage the pecking order.
Drive "0" is being read in disk mgmt as drive D and Drive "1" is being read
as drive C.
In the bios upon boot up, Drive 0 is in fact being read as the primary
master and Drive 1 read as the primary slave.
I have tried to change the letters of these drives to drive 0 = C and drive
1 = D but a window pops up saying that I can't change the name of the boot
drive.
"Windows cannot modify the letter of your boot volume or system volume"
I've tried diskpart - select drive- select volume/partition to deactivate
each drive
but it hasn't helped.
I keep getting the same message.
How is it that windows has determined both drives are the boot drive
instead of just one??..and is there any way to force the letters to change?

- Boot Problem
-
I recently unpartitioned and reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition. When I
boot up I get a black screen with two choices for Windows XP listed. When I
click on either, I can boot to a normal boot. What can I change to avoid the
black screen and boot directly to Windows XP?

- Restore points
-
I have Windows XP Home SP3 on my 6 year old computer that has been working
quite well todate. I discovered today that my System Restore program does
not seem to work correctly. When I set my own restore point it works OK but
the restore points it automatically creates itself every day do not work.
What could be wrong with this and how can this be rectified.

- Persistent folders on desktop
-
Using Windows XP/SP3. I have some folders on my desktop which are empty that
I'd like to get rid of. I put them there myself but even when I delete them
they return when I restart the computer. How do I get rid of them? Renaming
& trashing doesn't help. Nor does emptying the Recycling Bin before
rebooting.
I don't even know where/how to search for this problem! I've tried as many
versions of the question as I can think of.
TIA

- Windows really really slow to start
-
I have XP sp3, fairly new, (notebook for Christmas) not allot of crap
loaded. It has worked fine up until about 2-3 weeks ago. When I turn
it on in the morning (cold start) it will load the desktop image, I
hear the stupid music, then it sits for over a minute before anything
pops up, then it's instant. I can look at the task manager while it's
loading and only about 23-25 of a normal 38-40 processes running but
no cpu activity so I can't tell whats hanging. I tried to do a system
restore but before I did that, I tried the "Diagnostic Startup" in
msconfig and that erased all my restore points (there should be a
warning for that by the way)
I have disabled all the items I think of that could cause it to hang,
like Diskeeper, update services, including Avast, google updater, and
I have checked the logs in everything I can (event viewer etc...)
I do have Process Explorer installed, how can I use that to see whats
going on while windows is starting up? any other ideas on how to track
down the culprit? oh yea, did check for viruses and maleware.

- For what are "desktop.ini" files? Can I delete them?
-
Occasionally I found in various directories hidden files called "desktop.ini".
What is the purpose of them ?
Can it be that they are created from other computers (because the folder is a shared folder) ?
Are they similar to "thumbs.db" files ?
Can I delete them without destroying my own Desktop icons?

- pswd question
-
On XP pro sp3, if I start->run and type control userpasswords2 then hit enter
I get a UserAccts window, I then click the Advanced Tab, I then go down to the
center of the window to the AdvancedUserManagement heading and then look to
the right and click the Advanced button, I get another window called LocalUsersAndGroups,
if I then click Users->MyAcctName I finally get a window that called MyAcctName
Properties, if I look down to the center I see a check box (that is checked) beside a heading
that says, "password never expires".
Ok.......now I go to ControlPanel(ClassicView)->AdminstrativeTools->LocalSecurityPolicy
Then in that window I go to AccountPolices->PasswordPolicy and I click on
Maximum Password Age and it says 42 days ......?? ugh well the control userpasswords2
had just told me that my password would never expire? But now in this windows it says
the maximum age is only 42 days. So searching in Bullshxt land I click on a tab that says
"Explain this Setting" and it says the below
------------
Maximum password age
This security setting determines the period of time (in days) that a password can be used before
the system requires the user to change it. You can set passwords to expire after a number of
days between 1 and 999, or you can specify that passwords never expire by setting the number
of days to 0. If the maximum password age is between 1 and 999 days, the Minimum password
age must be less than the maximum password age. If the maximum password age is set to 0,
the minimum password age can be any value between 0 and 998 days.
------------
It says here (if I understand this ambiguous wording ) that if I set the maxium password age to zero
then it will never expire ? Can anybody explain to me what is going on ? Or more specifically
why does this area seem to disagree with the results of control userpasswords2 ?
I really at this time have no idea what my setting really is ?

- How to Add GBs to Recovery disc D?
-
I'm getting a message on my toolbar which says
"You are running out of disk space on HP_Recovery(D):
To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click
here..."
When I do this, I get 3 choices, each freeing up zero space.
I've defragged and gotten no change.
I've even said delete all but my latest update.
The Pie chart shows almost all space used.
Capacity is 8.50 GB
Free space is 32 MB
On C drive I have 51.3 GB used and 173 GB free space
I've just now disabled Quota Management on C.
D does not give me this option.
I'd be willing to add a few GBs, as I have 250GBs,
but I cannot find a way to do this on my XP Pro.
Is there any way to add GBs to Recovery D?
I would guess that they would need to come from C?
Thanks for any suggestions to keep this pop-up from nagging several
times a day!

- IE 8 secondary window problem?
-
Hi,
Not sure this is the right place to post this question; if not I'd
appreciate a link as to where to do it.
Problem (if it is a problem, well, for me it is a problem!) is that
when I'm on a page in IE 8 and click on something that opens in a
second window (like a news article), the second window is about 1/3
the size of the full window. I have to enlarge it to see the whole
article, video, or whatever. This gets a bit repetitive, and I'd
rather have the second window open to full size but can't figure out
if there's a setting to control it, and if so, which one.
Any help appreciated!!

- Trouble adding user or group
-
Ok, on two of my Home Lan nodes (one is a desktop and other a laptop)
Both running WinXP pro sp3.
I have the following done on BOTH:
1. Created logon passwords for each (desktop & laptop) owner user account.
2. Set simple file sharing OFF, i.e open Explore->Tools->Folder->View
and scrolled down to Use Simple File Sharing and UNCHECKED this.
3. Made sure these two were installed
Client for MS Networks
File & Print Sharing for MS Networks
Did this by going to
NetworkPlaces->ViewNetworkConnections->MyNetworkConnection
and right clicked-> chose properties
4. Rebooted both machines
5. Now when I am booted and logged onto the desktop I can direct my filehandler
to the Network\\SharedFolder location on my Laptop and it does in fact the
pop up and ask me my Laptop password and I can then see the folder contents.
That much works.
HOWEVER, if I log in on my laptop and try to goto the Network\\SharedFolder
location on my desktop I get two scenarios,
1. if I click on the plus + sign of the SharedFolderName I get an
Access Denied msg.
2. if I click on the actual SharedFolderName I get this big long msg that say
"The credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials. Try to close all
network paths and disconnect all network drives connected to the specified server.
Then try to connect this network path again."
Which I do but it does not help. I can tell you one thing that is different on my laptop,
When I go to the user accts->myUserAcct->MangagePasswords (off to the left)
it will not let me add the desktop, in fact it won't let me add anything all the headings
are grayed out ????????????
Got any ideas .

- what did Microsft do with the "PC Relocator" program from Alohabob ???
-
MSFT bought the company but never re-released this great program for
copying programs
from an old PC to a new one.
i am buying a new windows 7 PC and would like a good way to copy
applications.
PC relocator would actually copy the registry keys from PC to new PC.
better than reinstalling program after program.

- multiple desktops
-
After I installed XP on my sons computer,I come to find out that he put 3
different desktop areas on the drive. One for him,one for me(guest) and an
administrator. This setup is now causing problems because besides having
basically 3 of everything, there are things I can't do from my area that have
to be done from the admin.area, like download and install programs and
hardware.
My question is this-short of re-formatting the drive is there any way to
combine all 3 areas into one?
Thanks

- Increase time allowed for services to start?
-
How does Windows XP decide all services have started and that it's okay to
allow someone to log in?
I would like to make it wait a longer time since some impatient users are
logging in too quickly and complaining when tray icons (for example safe
removal, volume control) never appear.

- Lan security questions
-
Does implementing logon password protection offer any protection against
an online virus or Trojan attack?
Or does it only prevent local physical (or Lan) users from unauthorized access ?
What does the term "common" user account mean ?
Is this the same thing as "limited" user account ?

- CISVC.EXE hogs CPU; is it the same as Windows Search?
-
I recently reformatted the HD and reinstalled windows XP professional SP 3.
It hasn't been right since! One thing is that CISVC.EXE hogs the CPU. I know
how to turn it off, but I don't want to interfere with Windows search, which
I rely on - are CISVC and search the same thing, or not?
If they are the same, then I can't turn CISVC off, so how do I control it?
why is it a problem now, and not before? Since reformatting I have loaded
Norton 360 antivirus, and also installed an external HD. Could these affect
things? There is a very old hotifx reported that CISVC can hog CPU when an
external HD is installed but not physically present. However this should have
been fixed well before SP3. Just to be sure I un-installed the external HD
and the problem is still the same.
Also, windows Search indexing seems to be stuck. In the last day day it has
been running continuously but indexed only about ten files, indeed the total
indexed sometimes goes DOWN, and it is not reporting "indexing completed".
Does this make sense, or is it buganostic?
All thoughts gratefully received!
