- Keep getting message to update graphics driver
-
A message keeps popping up in one of my machines in an account running
in the background. It keeps saying, "warning: please update the display
driver and program". It looks like it's coming from Nvidia about the
graphics driver. So I updated to the latest 195.62 WHQL drivers from
Nvidia, the installation went fine, and the drivers are running fine,
but I still get the message! There's nothing newer out there, other than
maybe some beta drivers.
I'm running with an 8600GT video card from Palit.
I found one similar problem, posted on Nvidia's own forums:
Problems with 8800 GS drivers +IE scrolling - NVIDIA Forums
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=73822
It's about an 8800GS rather than an 8600GT, but it seems rather similar.
But there didn't seem to be any answer to that one.

This morning all the links and icons on my desktop have disappeared. After I
started Windows this morning they are just not there, althouth the picture I
have long used for a background remains. And the links, shortcuts and files
are still in documents and settings/......./desktop.
What could have happened?
I have tried to drag from the folder to the desktop, but, of course, I get
the error"source and destination are same."
I created a folder and dragged it to the desktop and it vanished. A search

- user acct problem
-
I have the built in admin acct (which I never use) and the
built in guest acct (which I also never use) and the All Users
acct and my original acct Owner.RB. All 4 of these accts
have been on my laptop since install. I tried creating a new
acct awhile back with limited privileges and it froze which
later I read that this was probably due to my broadcom wireless
driver which was said to not function in an acct that was not admin
privileges. So I gave up on that and deleted the new acct.
Now some time later I decide to create another new acct but
this time make it a admin privilege. However my machine does
pretty much the same thing as when I tried to create the limited
acct. It never does actually start the new acct, but rather just an
hour glass forever. Other than this my system works great. Does
XP have an problem with user accts ?

- Win XP error

I ran a virus scan with Kaspersky anti virus and after the full computer run
and a reboot i started to get some windows pop ups that were never there
befor.
LIST:
Isass.exe- Bad image
services.exe- bad image
explorer.exe bad image
rstrui.exe- bad image
winpatrol.exe- bad image
realsched.exe- bad image
runndll32.exe- bad image
application launcher.exe- bad image
googletoolbarnotifier.exe- bad image
All of these windows pop ups have this description in the window after the
words bad image. : the application or DLL C:\windows\system32\00232.DLL is
not a valid windows image please check this against your installation disk.
the google toolbar notifier was the first pop up so i reinstalled the
google updater and ran the anti virus scan. I know that some of the windows
like winpatrol and realsched are software executable s but the rest i'm not
sure about. I have tried to reinstall the real player, google updater and
win patrol but still get the same pop up windows at boot up. The pop up
windows don't effect the software's ability to run eg... i can still run IE ,
win patrol and the other programs it's just have to click the OK tab to
close the window.
I have tried to run a system restore but for some reason the system restore
shuts down and reboots than comes up with : System restore unable to restore
to a previous point. And this is the first time for that happening. Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated.

- How to simplicy Windows XP Search Interface?
-
I'm new to Windows XP Home.
When I click Start>Search, I have to then choose from a submenu:
For Files or Folders...
On the Internet...
------------------
For People...
When I click on "For Files or Folders" I end up in yet another sub-menu
headed:
"What do you want to search for?"
And so I have to then click on "All files and folders" before I actually
get to the Search utility.
How can I configure Windows XP so that when I click on Start>Search, it
takes me directly to the little box labled: "All or part of the file name:"?
Also, is there a way to just keep the left panel unchanged during the search
and when the search is completed, rather than having to click on the multiple
choice menu that pops up after the search is complete?

Hello--
Never have tried using one of these before, but here goes...A few days
ago I installed new virus software (2010 version of BitDefender)-I don;t
think that is causing the problem, though. I then installed the XP
patch(?) 3 from microsoft since Bitdefender had it rated as a critical
update. My system bogged down terribly. I tried to use system
restore..tried 6 different points fianlly going back several weeks and
the restore will NOT work. I appears that it is working, shuts down the
computer, then I get message that it did not work. Any ideas?? I
probably only know enough about computers to be dangerous....so anything
simple I can try would be great......

can I fix this?
By the way, I've done a recovery of XP on more than one occaision on

- Transfer Windows Registry...post-crash
-
I have a unique challenge facing me. Data corruption on my OS drive has
rendered my copy of Windows XP unusable. Can't boot into Windows in Safe mode
or any other mode. The drive is still readable, however, and I am able to
read it via an external USB connection.
As a result, I have gotten all critical data files off of it that I need,
but there are two important application settings that live only in the
Registry, and I did not store them in .reg files before the drive went south.
I know the five files that make up the Registry and their home in
Windows/System32/config. Is it plausible to attempt to transfer those files
to a drive that has a working copy of Windows, boot, grab the Registry
settings, and then get out? I make it sound like a bank robbery... :-)
Has anyone attempted this? Many thanks...

- How to Hide Left Panel of Folder Window?
-
I'm well behind the Windows curve and I'm just now learning to use Windows XP
Home. Up to now I've been using Windows 2000 Pro.
On my XP desktop I have a shortcut to my music folder which containins my
MP3 files.
When I double click on the shortcut, a window opens on the desktop
displaying the contents of my music folder.
This window has a panel along the left side containing items like "File and
Folder Tasks" and "Other Places."
I can't figure out how to close, hide or otherwise delete this panel. This
panel takes up a lot of precious desktop real estate and doubles the width of
the folder window. I often have six or more music folder windows opened at
the same time on my desktop so I can drag MP3 files from one folder to
another. As you can imagine, having that extra panel on all of those folders
makes quite a mess of my desktop.
Can someone help me with this?

- permissions
-
Got my desktop running xp pro, two physical drives, C (OS) and E.
I have a folder in E (my music) that contains a lot of subfolders and music
files that I have accidentally deleted, moved and sometimes lost when my
finger got too eager to click.
So I changed permissions for the folders and deleted all the permission
entries (in advanced) including SYSTEM. I just gave all the folder a special
permission, read only. All fine.
What I would like to know is: do I need to put SYSTEM back? I would not want
windows to write anything in these folders, Windows media player has messed
up some of the files before. I need the files to stay as they are.
Thanks

I have a system that lost the hal.dll Apparently the user could not enter

Anyways, all the information in the windows folder is what I need or, to

Would it be possible to change the boot.ini from windows.2 back to windows
and be able to boot to this folder. It really would save me a lot of time
having to wipe the drive and install everything again as the information is
still there.

- how can i regain an enternet connection?
-
this is the 3rd attempt at trying to post this, so i am posting this in two
parts:
last week, i got a rid of several trojans/malware using malwarebytes. it did
an excellent job, however it seemed to leave me with 2 problems - no internet
connectivity and no sound on my media player. so i tried a number of things
and eventually arrived at the following computer configuration, but first,
heres my system info:
i run xp sp2 on a msi rs480m2 series amd athlon 64 (socket 939) ms-7093
motherboard with a ati radeon express 200 series display. i ran belarc and
under communications, it tells me that i have a realtek rtl 8139 family pci
fast ethernet nic, and a d-link airplus g dwl-g510 wireless pci adapter.
under multimedia, it lists a creative sb x-fi and realtek ac'97 audio
(realtek alc658c (I/0)). under network drives, there are "none detected." i
have a working speedstream 4100 ethernet modem with 4 out of 5 lights on. the
5th one (activity) only comes on infrequently and mostly remains dark.
my device mgr indicates, under network adapters,a 1394 adapter (ms), the
d-link adapter and the realtek 8139. under 'other devices,' a yellow "?" is
beside the multi media video controller (also previously listed were the
sound controller and the ethernet controller, but no longer). (cont below)

- Can connect to router, and can ping Internet, but can't see web pages or emails
-
Hi guys,
This is my first ever post (I am THAT desperate to find a solution to
this problem!). Last night my computer was having trouble viewing web
pages, as in I could see the text and a few graphics, but I had to right
click on most pictures and click "show picture" where I really wanted to
see it. I figured it was a bandwidth problem which would resolve
overnight, as it seemed to get worse when I was trying to send emails.
The Internet would drop in and out occasionally, but I'd be patient and
keep refreshing where necessary. When it dropped right out at around
midnight, I figured that was my cue to go to bed.
When I logged on today around lunchtime, and I couldn't get any
Internet whatsoever. I use wireless connection to the ADSL router, as
cable is impracticle at this time. When I look at Network Connections,
the Wireless is connected (computer to router), and under Internet
Gateway it says that the ADSL is connected to the Internet. I can ping
any website, including the router, and my MSN Messenger has logged in.
My emails won't download, and ANY website I view (including the router
configuration site) comes up with "Internet Explorer cannot display the
webpage". I've been looking at my event viewer, and apart from my
desktop and my husband's laptop having a biff over who should be master
browser, there was nothing that I could really search on. Google and
Tech Arena searches have revealed the same problem happening with
Windows Vista, but nothing on XP. The only solution I've come up with
is that the Winsock might be corrupted, but I'm uneasy about fixing it
as all tests don't reveal corruption, and the results of fixing may be
worse than the original problem as I don't know what (if any)
applications would need reinstalling as a result.
BTW, my husband would like his laptop back soon. Does anyone have any
suggestions?
Thanks,
Jenn

- no internet connection - is it the controller or the adapter?
-
this is a very frustration situation. last week, i got a rid of several
trojans and malware using malwarebytes. it did an excellent job, however it
seemed to leave me with 2 problems - no internet connectivity and no sound on
my media player. so i tried a number of things and eventually arrived at the
following computer configuration, but first, heres my system info:
i run xp sp2 on a msi rs480m2 series amd athlon 64 (socket 939) ms-7093
motherboard with a ati radeon express 200 series display. i ran belarc and
under communications, it tells me that i have a realtek rtl 8139 family pci
fast ethernet nic, and a d-link airplus g dwl-g510 wireless pci adapter.
under multimedia, it lists a creative sb x-fi and realtek ac'97 audio
(realtek alc658c (I/0)). under network drives, there are "none detected." i
have a working speedstream 4100 ethernet modem with 4 out of 5 lights on. the
5th one (activity) only comes on infrequently and mostly remains dark.
my device mgr indicates, under network adapters,a 1394 adapter (ms), the
d-link adapter and the realtek 8139. under 'other devices,' a yellow "?" is
beside the multi media video controller (also previously listed were the
sound controller and the ethernet controller, but no longer).
i pulled out my cd/roms with the corresponding drivers for all of the above,
and re-installed them all beginning with the chipset drivers first. and the
end result was the current situation - the above status and still no
internet connection! i was told by some local tekkies to install a ethernet
pci adapter, to bypass this connectivity issue, but it did nothing as well.
they insisted that an ethernet controller was the same as a network card
and/or an internet card, which is why i decided to try the adapter. a year or
so ago, i had installed the d-link wireless adapter to use in case the dsl
ever went out (which it has from time to time), but even that can't connect
now, even though it is picking up a signal. i also reset the modem several
times and on top of that, i have no sound coming from the media player (error
28).
so this is my current problem - and though the sound issue is probably
unrelated to the connectivity issue, i thought i would mention it anyway. the
device mgr indicates that i have functioning sound and ethernet drivers.
under 'sound, video, and game controllers' are listed audio codecs, creative
sb x-fi, legacy audio and video capture, media controller, realtek97 and
video codecs - all indicating each device is working properly.
any suggestions about what to do at this point. other than these 2 problems,
my system is doing fine, so flashing the bios seems too risky. and it seems
really stupid to completely re-install my o/s, over this issue, but i am at
an end.
your expertice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

-
After a blue screen crash I repaired windows XP and have sound problems
The Realtek sound effects manager works, passes all tests I get sound during
tests but no sound player will work. Sounds and audio devices icon info says
no audio device installed. I have downloaded and installed all the Intel
D925xcv on board drivers, device manager shows all sound devices working I
tried uninstalling reinstalling drivers that did not help. I went through all
the troubleshooting no help.

- Flash Drive Backup Reliability
-
This may not be the best place for this topic, but here goes. Because of the
problems I have been having using CD-RWs & CD-Rs for backing up my files, I
began looking at the Verbatim USB Flash drives. I am looking for any
comments or experiences relative to the reliability of using these for
backup. I have been trying the 8 GB drive for this purpose, and it seems to
work OK in the limited time I have played with it. Is there a problem with
writing and deleting files many times, like a C drive? Will they hold the
data over extended time? I ask these questions because I do not know how the
data is actually stored on this type of media. Thanks for any information
you may have for me. Charles Ranheim

- How to edit Boot.ini on XP-Pro, if unable to load windows
-
Hello,
Had to do a clean install from a USB drive, because the CD drive died on me.
and now I need to edit the "Boot.ini" file. I just need to delete one line
off of it.
Can someone please point me to where I can find instructions on how I can
accomplish this?
I've been reading and found that they are not directly editable when on a
NTFS volume. but also read that it is possible. but haven't been able to
find good directions on how to do it.
Thank you

- WinDbg: Unable to get verifier list
-
I've been attempting to get to the bottom of a recurring BSOD crash
happening on my system. I've already had 4 crashes so far over the past
two weeks. So I've identified that NTOSKRNL.EXE is involved in all of
them so far. It always somewhere in the stack. So I enabled Driver
Verifier on NTOSKRNL, as well as HAL.DLL, NTFS.SYS, and FLTMGR.SYS which
were also identified on the stack during various of the events.
Okay so I had my latest crash yesterday, and it occurred on NTOSKRNL as
well. The Verifier was already enabled on the system prior to this
crash, and then when go to Windbg and execute the "!verifier" command,
it comes back with the message, "Unable to get verifier list". Why not,
it should be enabled?
When I check them on the command-prompt I get the following output back,
and they confirm that all of the files are being monitored. So can
somebody familiar with Driver Verifier and Windbg help me out here?

- NO INTERNET CONNECTION - etherent controller or adapter, or.....?
-
this is very frustrating: i am unable to connect to the internet - heres the
story:
my system runs xp sp2 with an msi motherboard (ms 7093, ati radeon xpress
200, athlon 64 bit, rs480m2 (socket 939)), realtek alc658c audio that uses a
realtek ac'97 driver and a creative sb x-fi soundcard, a siemens speedstream
4100 modem, a realtek 8139 family pci fast ethernet nic and a d-link g510
wireless pci adapter.
my device mgr indicates that under network adapters, i have working a 1394
net adapter, d-link adapter, and a rtl8139. under "other devices," i only see
a yellow "?" on the multimedia device, but no where else. under the sound,
video and game controllers, it lists audio codex, the creative soundcard,
legacy audio driver and video capture device, media control devices, realtek
ac'97 audio, and video codecs. however, under network drives, belarc tells me
that "none (are) detected."
issue: i have reinstalled drivers, including the msi chipset first, then the
others, as well as reset the modem - which by the way has four out of five
lights green, while the last of the five remains dark (the 'activity' light).
fortunately, i still have all of the cd/roms with drivers. i took my issue to
the local frys and was told to bypass the realtek by using a pci ethernet
adapter, but after installation, still no internet connection. the dsl back
up (the d-link adapter) is also unable to connect.
and on top of it all, i have no sound on my media player!
wtf is going on - and can someone offer some useful guidance? a functioning
internet connection stopped after i got rid of some malware and trojans using
malwarebytes. it seems that getting connected to the internet would be rather
straightforward. i am on the verge of re-installing my entire os, merely
because of this one stupid issue. HELP!
and many thanks.

when you insert the disc in the drive did not appear. Anyone know how I can
do
this with that program (I assumed it came with XP) or where I can get a
format program. Thanks in advance for the help.
I am using Win XP Sp2 w/2 GB Memory.

- Virus program removal
-
Hi
A friend had new laptop with Windows 7 loaded and also trial version 30day
of Mc afee. Which they want removed, as I will be loading another make. Some
of these programs leave files behind after add-remove has been used. Any
advice in this direction I should be aware of, before I load another anti
Virus program

- Page Fault in Non Paged Area
-
My computer is having serious problems. The initial problem is that i
won't boot...Gets to the Windows loading screen then reboots. Booting i
safe mode or last known working configuration doesn't work either.
I thought it might have something to do with a corrupted boot.ini file
so I thought I'd try to repair it from the Windows cd. However, when
try this I get a message after it asks which Windows to repair sayin
'Page fault in Non Page Area'. Then I just thought I'd reinstal
windows, but I get the same error message when trying to install xp.
At this stage I'd be really happy to just format my hard drive
reinstall XP and just start fresh! But i can't even seem to do that...
Any help would be much appreciate

- top-posters across the land
-
I just visited the alt.win7 group, just to see what lifeforms
were brewing in there... Mildly interesting...
A lot of really stupid "how do I" questions - of course, except
seeing one from a Symantec /engineer/ it's /kind of /strange...
An AMAZING amount of Linux Vs. Windows arguments...
But the strangest thing of all...
In the 10 or so threads I looked at (I really don't give a shit
about W7), there was NO top-posting!
PLEASE don't tell me Win7 users are better at following basic
logic and netiquette than XP users!
(OK, tell me. I know you will...)
