  • My Computer folder list has wrong SORT
    • When I used to open up My Computer, the hard drive partitions were always in alphabetical order. If I opened up one of the partition folders, the folders inside were also in alphabetical order. But something (me???) has changed this, and now they the partitions and the partition folders are in some unknown order. When I try to correct this using VIEW/ARRANGE ICONS/BY NAME, the folders end up in reverse alphabetical order. There must be a default setting somewhere that I can change. Do anyone know how to do this?

  • changing clock time to 12 hour format
    • In the lower right corner of the Win2000 screen is a clock that shows the time in digital format. Normally its 12 hour format (12:45PM) but mine has somehow changed to 24 hour time as in 23:45 . I'd like to change it back but haven't found a way to do this. Any suggestions?

  • OPEN file list always defaults to "List" format...how to change?
    • In any program, when I want to access a list of files to use or view from that program, I go to FILE, then OPEN, then a window opens up with a list of files and folders. I always change the format of the list to "Details" so I can get an alphabetized list of the files, but the next time I do this, the format is back to the unexplained "List" format . I'd like to know if there is a way to change the default, globally, so that everytime I open up a file list it will be in the preferred "Details" format. I'd also like to be able to set (as default) the location of the files and folders that I first see when I go FILE/OPEN. Some programs seem to do this for me, and remember where I looked the previous time, but many don't. Thanks for any suggestions about this... jc

  • PXE booting from Windows 2000 - session/OS setup?
    • Got an old Windows 2000 server (I didnt set up) that is used for PXE booting. Basically, I can DHCP boot another machine from it. Then I get blue screen with white text informing me that this is the Client Installation Wizard. I log on using username PXE and then it gives me a list of 'operating systems'. This corresponds to the name of ghost sessions I have available to run on the server. Question is:- Where on the PXE server are these 'operating systems' configured?

  • Two versions of Windows 2000 on one machine (same partition)
    • Got a server which we're moving to new hardware. Old server had a dual boot (both of which were windows 2000). One windows was installed in c: \winnt and the second in c:\winntpxe. I've got the primary installed now. Do I just install again with windows 2000 disk and select new install directory? Also, second install (as you can see from name) acts as a DHCP/GHOST pxe server. With the original server, we could boot other machines across the network from this. The client machine then gave an option to select a ghost session to choose (I think this is in DHCP setup somewhere). This then tied up with whatever ghost session was set to run on the windows 2000 server. I can set the ghost sessions up easy enough but dont know how to add the sessions that DHCP picks up?

  • Questions regarding Data center operation
    • Hi, I have over 8 years of IT experience but very new to the Data Center space and have 4 questions. If someone can answer, I would really appreciate! You can consider these questions more of a brainstorming ideas. 1. If a facilities capacity is re-classified as 5 MW lower than it was previously, what needs to happen here? 2. We need to expand Network capacity at a facility by 2 times but for only 20% more money, how can we do it? 3. Where to start if you are responsible for tech refresh in existing facility? 4. During tech refresh planning you find out about a delay in delivery of networking equipment, how do you deal with that? Thanks a lot, Hemanshu

  • General Protection Fault on Game with NT-Based systems
    • Hello all. I'm having some trouble with a game running on NT-based windows OS's. It keeps throwing a general protection fault from a DLL. Is there any way to solve this issue so the game will run on modern windows OS's? I can get the game to run on Windows 98SE. So far I've failed to get it to run on Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 Pro. I'm currently trying to get a copy of Windows 2000 and Windows ME so I can try it with those two systems. Compatibility mode failed. I can't figure out if there's a way to get it to work or if it can even work at all. If it helps, the game is Greg Norman Ultimate Challenge Golf (1995). -- Jason

  • can't make Win2k automatically logon a user
    • I had Windows 2000 automatically logon for several years. (this is on a PC not connected to internet, and only accessible by me, so I consider this safe). But last few days, it demands a password when I boot. I go to Control Panel - Users and Passwords, I uncheck [users must enter a user name and password to use this computer] click OK then it asks for Administrator password But next time I reboot, I must enter a password. I return to control panel, and there is a tick there requiring user and password. So what is resetting this option to automatically logon?

  • Server not found
    • My firewall takes a good bit of setting up to allow for my various programs. One day, I noticed the firewall was not in System Tray, so I went back to a older registry and rebooted. Since that time, the firewall is back to normal, and I can still dial up to my ISP server, but my browser and newsreader at any address give the message: server not found. Reboots do not fix this. I have never touched the host file. Disabling the firewall do not fix this. Advice? ms

  • No Color support when printing
    • I have a Win2000 Pro laptop which prints to an HP PSC 1200 printer through a D-Link USB print server over a standard TCP print port. I also have a Windows XP SP2 desktop connected to the same printer in the same way. Both machines are using the same print driver (the HP Deskjet 3420 series driver) and can print successfully. However, the Win2000 machine does not print in color. I then setup the Windows XP machine to share the HP PSC 1200 printer across my home network. Next, from the Win2000 machine, I added a networked printer instance. When I print through this networked printer, the jobs are in color. I printed test pages from the Win2000 machine through each printer instance. The non-networked instance says "Color Support: no" and the networked instance says "Color support: yes". Is there something in the registry that I can configure to turn on (activate) the color support in the driver when printing from the non- networked instance of the printer?

  • Netsh problems? Renaming an interface
    • I'm trying to rename an interface so that one of my netsh scripts works properly. (It uses static local). Anyway, if I go into netsh>interface> show interface, the interface name is shown as a long 20-30 random character. If I do set interface name = "<name>" newname = "test1" it goes away and thinks for a bit and then says network path not found. Any ideas?

  • Local Audit Policy Settings - Changes not getting saved.
    • Hey there, We have run into a weird issue. Every time we attempt to configure the local audit policy settings in one of our Windows 2000 stand alone server. The changes made are not getting saved. We have an RSA SecurID agent installed in the machine and the agent has a setting which could conflict with the Windows's event logging settings. However, that settings in RSA is not enabled. The server was rebooted to see if that works but unfortunately it didnt. What could you causing this issue? Thanks for your help, Serendipity

  • HKLR\Software\Classes\*, default double-click actions, and "open".
    • I posted a message similar to this a few days ago in the "general" group but go no responses, so I'll try again, this time also posting to the "registry" group. I have two questions, really. Firstly, what exactly is the following key for, and what can folks here tell me about its uses? HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\* I've determined from experiment that Classes\*\Shell\command commands are added to the right-click context menu of *all* file types, both known and unknown. But does this key also have other functions? (It's hard to google for this key, because google apparently interprets "*" as a wildcard or a punctuation. It work on words, not symbols.) Secondly, why do I get a boldface "Open" option as the top, default item in the context menu when I right-click a file icon of unknown type? This is not the behavior I desire! What I really desire is to have "Edit in HxD" (where HxD is a type of binary file editor) as default option when right-clicking or double-clicking a file icon of unknown type. I put the following in my registry, but it doesn't quite work the way I want: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\* Shell default = edit_hxd edit_hxd default = "Edit in HxD" command default = [path to executable] %1 edit_neo default = "Edit in Neo" command default = [path to executable] %1 edit_notetab default = "Edit in Notetab" command default = [path to executable] %1 Desired right-click context menu for file icons of unknown type: Edit in HxD (boldface) Edit in Neo (lightface) Edit in Notetab (lightface) Scan with Avast (lightface) Open with... (lightface) Send To Cut Copy ...etc... *Actual* right-click context menu for file icons of unknown type: Open (boldface) Edit in HxD (lightface) Edit in Neo (lightface) Edit in Notetab (lightface) Scan with Avast (lightface) Open with... (lightface) Send To Cut Copy ...etc... Where is that "Open" coming from??? If I click it, it brings up the "Choose Program" box. Double-clicking a file of unknown type also brings up that box. "Open" is acting as default, even though I'm telling the registry that I want "Edit in HxD" to be the default. (I note that "Open" is present in the right-click context menu of *know* file types, too, but as the sixth item, and not boldface. Clicking it for known types launches the associated program instead of the choose box.) So how do I get rid of "Open"? I'm pretty sure it didn't used to be there. As I recall, for a while I was able to open unknown-type files in HxD by just double-clicking them, but a few days ago the "Open" started popping up, so I can't do that any more. Thanks in advance to whoever can help me get rid of "Open"! -- Cheers, Robbie Hatley Stanton, CA, USA perl -le 'print "\154o\156e\167o\154f\100w\145ll\56c\157m"' perl -le 'print "\150ttp\72//\167ww.\167ell.\143om/~\154onewolf/"'

  • How do I set unknown file types to open in HxD on doubleclick?
    • Greetings, group. I used to have my Windows 2000 set up so that when I double-click a file icon with unknown extension, it would open in a binary editor called "HxD". On right-clicking a file of unknown type, the top few entries on the context menu were: Edit in HxD (boldface) Edit in Neo (lightface) Edit in NoteTab (lightface) But recently, when I double-click a file of unknown type, the "choose a program to open this file" box pops up instead. And on right-clicking the file, I get: Open (boldface) (launches "choose program" box) Edit in HxD (lightface) Edit in Neo (lightface) Edit in NoteTab (lightface) My registry branch HKLM\Software\Classes\*\Shell doesn't have a key called "Open". So where is this "Open" coming from? It didn't used to be there. What other places in the registry could be causing this? -- Cheers, Robbie Hatley Stanton, CA, USA perl -le 'print "\154o\156e\167o\154f\100w\145ll\56c\157m"' perl -le 'print "\150ttp\72//\167ww.\167ell.\143om/~\154onewolf/"'

  • Using Windows 2000 with only 256M of RAM?
    • Due to an issue with my main laptop, I have to temporarily use a backup laptop that has Windows 2000 Pro with a limit of only 256M of RAM. Windows 2000 Pro is VERY stable with absolutely no glitches. I am mainly browsing the web to do work & read my email. I learned very quickly I can't use Firefox - it eats RAM like a goldfish eats fish food. I'm limited to IE6. I've turned off all the fancy GUI bells & whistles and reduced the display to 16-bit colors. I use Agnitum Outpost firewall which uses 42M of RAM. Anyone care to share with me any hints or trick on how I can slim Windows to effectively use this laptop with that small amount of RAM? Thanks!!!

  • OT: Comcast TV Listings
    • Anyone else here use the Comcast TV Listing (Fancast) to see what's on TV? On my Win2000Pro SP4 system, I can no longer get the TV listing to see what's on TV. All the other parts work. Is this because of my OS? It all worked fine until around a week ago. Comcast 'help' said it was designed for XP and newer. So, if you use Win2000ProSP4 and can receive the Comcast TV Listings, let me know. Thanks, Buffalo

  • Setting the number for workstations a single user can logon
    • I'd like to know if there is a way to set a number for computers a single login name can log on. You can enter computer names in a domain user's property->account->logon work stations. I got a error message showing me the max number for workstation names I could enter was 60. My email address is: changdongl@hotmail.com.

  • event application log perflib errors
    • I suppressed the perflib messages (as below) but still get hundreds of the annoying messages filling the log every time I boot. sample message: "Open Procedure for service "PerfDisk" in DLL "D:\WINNT \system32\perfdisk.dll" failed. ..... Status code returned is data DWORD 0." From MS I saw this info: "After you suppress performance library (perflib) event messages by setting the EventLogLevel registry setting as described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, perflib continues to log event messages:" This seems to suggest a know error which was fixed in SP4 and suggests installiing it - but of course I already am on W2K SP4! Guess it's not crotical but how can I totally disable the perflib messages. I am now using win7 and Ubuntu but really still prefer win2k!!

  • Microsoft Responds to the Evolution of Online Communities
    • Date 5/4/2010 Starting in early summer 2010, Microsoft will begin progressively closing down the Microsoft public newsgroups to enrich conversations in the rapidly-growing forum platform. This decision is in response to worldwide market trends and evolving customer needs. Microsoft continues to invest in forums to reduce customer effort, consolidate community venues and make it easier for active contributors to retain their influence. Forums provide a healthy community environment with less spam and make answers easier to find by customers and search engines. Additionally, forums offer a better user and off-topic management platform that will improve customer satisfaction by facilitating discussions in a clean space. We understand that some newsgroups are still active, and important to the community. In the coming days and weeks, we will be rolling out tools and resources to minimize disruption to the community discussions. We are working diligently on providing additional resources and information in local languages later this week. In the meantime, please refer to the official Microsoft Newsgroup website http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/default.mspx concerning this issue. The Microsoft Newsgroup website will be made available in additional languages in the next few days.

  • Time Required to Shutdown
    • This question relates to the same Dell machine in my last thread. I always uninstall programs I don't use, like MS Office, Net Meeting, Excel, Outlook Express, Adobe, Flash Player, and certainly Net Framework. I disable Task Scheduler. These steps result in a quicker machine. I have another W2K computer, 2.5 GHZ, it now shuts down in about 4 seconds, like a W98 machine. The big help on that one was removing NET, now the flash card releases usually quickly. But even on that machine, sometimes shutdown delays for about 30 seconds, reason unknown. The next time it will be quick, as usual. The Dell is only a 660 MHZ CPU, but IMO has a very long shutdown time, over a minute. The screen says saving system information, once it gets to the shutdown screen it turns off. In addition to the programs above, this machine had a bunch of Java files I uninstalled. I've seen mention of running processes that cause slow shutdown. I looked through the entries in my process utilities, nothing abnormal. In Autorun, one of you experts might see some unnecessary entries, but I looked and nothing extra was obvious. Isn't a minute a long shudown time? What are the critical processes that result in delaying shutdown? ms

  • Password screen
    • This is a used W2K computer, was booting with no password screen. Ran TweakUI for it's useful settings, but it has some default settings I never use and usually unselect. This time IIRC, logon during boot waa not unselected. So on the next boot, see a password screen, the previous owner's password is unknown, left with only option to shut down. Had just loaded my utilities so ERUNT either saved it's first registry before I ran TweakUI, or just afterward. I have the 4 boot disks and emergency disk from my other W2K computer, but IIRC they are not useful on this machine. I got into Safe Mode, but then see the password screen. Tried Safe Mode - Debugging mode, but windows starts with the password screen. Since I can't get into the OS, I can't even replace the previous owner's password with my own. ' How to remove the password screen on bootup? ms

  • Make CD/DVD for updates?
    • Hi there, We'd like to re-install our Windows 2000 onto a relative's computer, since she is using ME and we are here already upgraded to XP. She only has dialup access, so I'd like to collect the needed updates and burn them (here) to a CD/DVD for installation on her computer after the Windows 2000 Professional is installed. May I ask for your help, please: 1) What updates should be installed to bring the Windows 2000 installation completely up-to-date? 2) Where can these updates be downloaded? Is there one site where they can all be downloaded, or are they scattered all over the microsoft.com site? 3) In what order should the updates be installed? 4) Are there any issues with an upgrade from ME to 2000? Should we save all important personal data such as photos, music, documents etc. and do a reformat and clean install? How to preserve email and its folder structure as well as browser favorites and settings?

  • msinfo32.exe gives "connection to could not be established..." ???
    • I'm trying to run msinfo32.exe, which is the System Information/System Summary module. But I keep getting this response: "the connection to could not be established. Check to see that the network path name is correct, that you have sufficient permission to access Windows Management". All of the other modules (Hardware Resources, Components, etc...) give the same response. I've tried refreshing, but still the same response. Looking in the Event Viewer, there are plenty of errors that say "WinMgmt cannot open the repository file..." could that have something to do with this. But I have plenty of disk space and memory. These WinMgmt errors seem to have started a month ago. Can someone show me what's wrong here...the computer seems to be working normally, and I checked Services to see if I might have turned something off. I started Windows Management Instrumentation, in case that was it...but no difference. John
