- Failed Update .NET Framework 3.5 service pack 3.5
-
This failed repeatedly by Automatic Updates. I contacted tech support - not
helpful. I finally realized that .net 3.0 is not installed. I tried to
install that manually and failed. I restored and decided to live with .net
2.0. Today Update tried and failed to install .net 2.0 service pack 1. Error
Code 0x643.

- Office 2007 Update - continuous restart in Windows 7
-
I am running Windows 7 and after installing the latest updates for
Office 2007 (Update KB977724and Security Update KB978380) and on
restarting I keep getting the message "Your must restart your computer
to continue the update process." I've restarted at least a half dozen
times and keep getting the same message.
I actually have Office 2003 installed but the 2007 updates don't
bother my other two machines which are running XP.

- Unable to open .docx files after conducting March 2010 Microsoft Update
-
Hello -- I'm running Windows 2000, MS Office 2003 Professional, and Office Compatibility Pack. My system has been running quite stable. In conducting the March Microsoft Updates, it updated with the following files:
Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB978380)
Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB977724)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB979771)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2003 (KB978474)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - March 2010 (KB890830)
After conducting this update, I find that when I attempt to open a .docx file, I get "There was an error opening the file." error message. I went into Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, but was unable to find KB977724 listed. I tried removing the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack and downloading it/installing it fresh, but to no avail.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I am running Windows XP Professional. While trying to configure new software

- Why Office 2007 updates for office 2003?
-
We are running Office 2003 on one computer. The March update downloads from
MS want me to take and install the following Office 2007 patches:
Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB977724)
Date last published: 3/9/2010
Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB978380)
Date last published: 3/9/2010
These are obviously for Office 2007. The information provided with the
update makes no mention of working with or needed by Office 2003. But it
keeps suggesting I install these 2 patches. Why? Should I install them?
I do have MS Live Meeting 2007 installed on his system. Could this be what
causes this question? If so the same question. Should I install?
Thanks for any and all help

I cannot get KB 979771 to install no matter what I try. It is a junk email
filter for Office 2003, and I am using Windows 7 - 32 bit. Anyone else
having this problem? I have rebooted, retry updater, check for new updates,
looked up the secret code "WindowsUpdate_0000052F" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"
(which really doesn't tell me what is prohibiting this particular update),
and have no luck. I have seen similar updates on my XP and Win 7 - 64
machines install without any prolems.

I have a MS Intellipoint Laser Mouse 7000 V7.0 installed. When I went to

was odd was that id didn't come thru the normal windows update screen. I

back to V7.0 and everything now works again. Can anybody tell me this is

- OT: Forums versus newsgroups - can you indulge a SBS MVP by answering
-
As an SBSer since I have SQL on my server I feel like SQL is family so
if you'll indulge me in a fishing expedition on forums versus newsgroups.
I need to pick your brain a bit if you don't mind? Can I ask some
fishing expedition questions because I want to see if my thoughts are on
track with others. Just want to see if my thoughts are out in left
field or what. I know why I like what I like but I want to know from
someone else what they like and why.
Do you like forums over newsgroups and if so why?
Do you like newsgroups over forums and if so why?
How did you first find the newsgroups in the first place?
How do you get here now? Web browser or nntp reader?
Why do you choose web browser versus nntp reader?
What makes you keep coming back? Habit?
If you prefer forums what would make you change to another community
platform?
If you prefer newsgroups what would make you change to another community
platform?
Do you prefer another community platform over forums AND newsgroups? If
so, what platform/venue is it? (and if you say twitter I'll bonk ya on
the head ;-)
Do you know about the NNTP bridge to make a transition to allow nntp
like access to a web forum?
The NNTP Bridge is an application created and maintained by the
Microsoft Forum team. This application emulates an NNTP server to the
extent of allowing NNTP newsreader clients to read data from and write
data to Microsoft forums. It is a custom solution built on top of the
standard NNTP protocol and expects communication from an NNTP newsreader
client; therefore it does not necessarily support all NNTP command
input. The NNTP Bridge acts as a medium of data transportation between
the newsreader client and Microsoft forums. As a result, the user?s
experience may change depending on the newsreader client.
The NNTP Bridge officially targets the following three newsreader clients:
· Windows Mail
· Windows Live Mail
· Outlook Express
While other clients were also being tested during the development
process (including Forte Agent and Thunderbird), bugs not pertaining to
the three targeted clients are not guaranteed to be fixed at this time.
The installation of the application and the limited UI of the
application itself (basically a start button, a stop button, and WLID
sign in page) are only available in English. However, when the Bridge
is running, you are free to connect to forums of any language and
read/post in any language you select.
The NNTP Bridge Client v1.0 Release is available via the Microsoft
Connect site. Please refer to the following steps to download and
install it and then configure the newsreader client.
NOTE: The NNTP Bridge team is accepting your feedback directly on the
Connect portal. Providing your thoughts and comments there will route
your requests directly to the Dev team.
1. Download the utility by following the instructions at
http://connect.microsoft.com/MicrosoftForums (NNTP Bridge Home Page on
Connect).
2. Install the NNTP bridge by following the steps at
http://connect.microsoft.com/MicrosoftForums/content/content.aspx?ContentID=13820.
3. Configure your newsreader client:
3.1). On successful starting of the NNTP Bridge application, start your
nntp news reader client, ie., Windows Mail.
3.2). Create a newsgroup account, and type 127.0.0.1 as the NNTP server
and 119 as the port. With that information it should be able to connect
to your local NNTP Bridge and successfully list all the forums.
3.3). Select the partner forum(s) you are interested in.
Besides, some more resources are for your reference:

I have been installing multiple updates (due to computer restore). During
this last set of updates, I noticed that there were a few that said they
weren't installed (failed) successfully. I went back to the installed updates
info, but there were no items that showed "failed". When I tried to go back
to the Windows Update Home page, I received this error code [Error number:
0xC80001FE]. I do not have a 3rd party anti-virus or firewall active right
now. I have done nothing following the installation of updates.

- error code: 800B0109
-
Hello,
I have Vista Premium. Today I noticed this error message when starting the
system, but it did not prevent using the programs. The error was associated,
as the message informs, to Windows defender. As a solution, I tried also to
look for updates, which was impossible and the same error code appeared
(800B0109). I tried many times manually but no updates were allowed. I
disabled Defender to start with Vista, but I had no success, updates still
not allowed, the same error code.
I must emphasize that the systems are apparently normal, and my updates are
configured to automatic (download the updates, I choose when to install them)
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

- Hiding KB976002 results in security warning
-
Windows XP SP3
Windows update allows you to hide an update you don't want to install.
Of course I have hidden KB976002 which is presented as a critical
update but is not a security update and is only needed when the user
wants to have it.
However, now Windows Update complains that I have hidden a critical
security update and that my computer will be in great danger until
I restore this update.
This is of course incorrect. KB976002 is not a security update.
Please update the Windows Update site so that KB976002 can be hidden
without further messages and incorrect warnings.

i dont know what to do ive been looking how the fix this problen 4 days
will this help? please im lost?To reset the DRM system, do the following:
Warning
This will delete all media usage rights and you will not be able to play any
protected files until the new media usage rights are downloaded. Microsoft
Recorded TV Shows (DVR-MS files), however, will be deleted and cannot be
replaced.
1.
Verify that Windows is configured to show hidden files and protected
operating system files.
If your computer is running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, you should
also stop the Media Center receiver service by typing net stop ehrecvr at a
command prompt.
2.
Open the Windows Media DRM folder. This folder is usually at C:\public\DRM.
If you cannot find the DRM folder, do the following:
1.
In Windows, click Start, and then click Run.
2.
In the Open text box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3.
In Registry Editor, click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DRM.
4.
Double-click the DataPath value. The path to the DRM folder is displayed in
the right column.
3.
In the Windows Media DRM folder, select and delete all of the files, and
then restart the computer.
4.
To download new media usage rights for a file, start the Player and play the
file. The Player will contact the online store and attempt to download new
rights.
If you want to download rights for a lot of files, you can also contact your
online store to find out if the store provides the ability to restore or
renew rights for all files that you have obtained from the store.

security essentials, cleaned my computer with CCleaner, ran Spybot, and
defragged my computer.
Then I tried the Run: sfc. scannow and nothing came up.
I went directly to the link provided

- Updates infected with "Antivirus Soft" virus?
-
1. New Toshiba Laptop, formatted hard drive
2. Installed Basic Toshiba drivers: Chipset, LAN, WAN, Audio
3. Connected to Wireless Network
4. Run Microsoft Update up to the point where it says do I want to activate
my license
5. Then I let Automatic Updates download and install the updates (don't have
to activate when Automatic Updates does the work for me.)
6. This pc still has XP PRO SP2
7. Downloaded 64 updates
8. Rebooted and the "Antivirus Soft" virus came up, basically locking up all
my exe files.
I've scanned everything and the virus has not been found on any of my media.
I triple checked every file with Symantec's Endpoint Protection 11.0.5, and
Microosft Security Essentials (current) and Malwarebytes. Nothing. I even
decompressed each install file from Toshiba and checked every file on the PC
after the installers ran.
Nothing.
Is it possible Microsoft Update is infected with this virus? I know, remote.
The virus infected my computer after installing the first round of updates
via Automatic Updates which there were 64 updates to download and install
including IE8 and its updates.
After the restart, Antivirus Soft took over and disabled everything.
Thanks.

- SP2 CD to SP3
-
Hi,
I have Windows XP Pro SP2 and wanted to do a clean install. I did this
before, and it was ok... But I'm wondering. Is there any way I can integrate
SP3 into this SP2 installation from the setup?
I personally don't like to go trough the whole process of updating. It
starts by downloading sp3, then reboots.. then downloads another ton of
updates.. then reboots again and again.. then downloads some more updates...
You know the drill.
The idea of doing an installation with all the updates, or at least most of
them, is rather more pleasing to me.
Can anyone help?
Best regards,
Nuno Dias

installation of sp3 fails because it wants me to insert disc with frontpage
(which I have not yet used) but never recieved the disc with purchase. If
this update is so important how can I fix the problem so the update can be
installed? Please use dummy terms to help as I am just a regular person and
have never done this before.

- Why is WU installing Firefox add-on's?
-
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
------=_NextPart_000_0030_01CABA9B.CD3A2EC0
Content-Type: text/plain;
charset="iso-8859-1"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
Why is WU putting add-ons into Firefox? It's Mozilla's responsibility to =
take care of their own browser, and I imagine they would prefer it that =
way.
WU puts the new extension "Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 0.0.0" =
into Firefox without any prior notice to user. I'm not sure offhand =
exactly which WU update does it, but apparently one of the High Priority =
security updates related to .NET 2.0/3.0/3.5. This add-on from MS is not =
compatible with Firefox. Only the Enable/Disable button is active, the =
Options and Uninstall buttons are grayed out.
MS tried to provide a fix to enable the Uninstall button, but it doesn't =
work with later versions of Firefox as I and many others can verify:
Update to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 for the .NET Framework =
Assistant 1.0 x86 (KB963707)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3Dcecc62dc-96a7-=
4657-af91-6383ba034eab&displaylang=3Den
MS also published manual removal instructions:=20
How to remove the .NET Framework Assistant for Firefox
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=3D963707
I can verify that the manual removal method works OK with my Firefox 3.6 =
despite some inaccurate details. (There is no =
general.useragent.extra.microsoftdotnet preference item in my Firefox =
3.6 about:config list.) However removing it is pointless(!), because WU =
then reinstalls it via High Priority KB963707. The only way to prevent =
reinstallation is to disable KB963707 in WU.
In fact Mozilla has their own version of Microsoft .NET Framework =
Assistant 1.2 which works OK as I can verify with Firefox 3.6. It can be =
installed on top of the MS 0.0.0 version, then 0.0.0 doesn't appear. =
However the MS 0.0.0 version wasn't replaced and reappears if 1.2 is =
uninstalled. The MS 0.0.0 version is not needed, only causes problems, =
and somehow needs to be killed by WU.

- windows update error message
-
Hi
For the last week or so I've been getting the message
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem. "
I have 4 computers on a router using the firewall in the router, no other
firewalls running and using AVG version 9.0 for all 4 PCs, which are all
running XP SP3.
The message is displayed from all the computers.
Nothing was changed-- no settings on the firewall or on the PCs.
Thanks!

- Windows Update not working on IE7, XP Home Edition SP2
-
I don't think I've been getting updates for quite a while.
I recently uninstalled McAfee and installed Norton Security Suite (free to
Comcast customers).
The Windows Update site would not load at all but I read somewhere about
re-registering some services that McAfee apparently nuked, and it sort of
started to work, But it's extremely sloooooooow.
Also, I have that Background Intelligent Transfer Service flapping in my
event log. It will not stay running. Is it needed for Windows Update?
This is so frustrating.

- can't find updates, error 80070490
-
I have windows vista 32 bit and can't search for new updates,
it keeps showing an error code.
I have already searched alot of solutions on this site with no luck.
The history of previous installed updates is gone, and it stated that the
last update was installed in april 2009.
I already tried renaming softwaredistribution but that changed nothing,
also installed KB967723 but said it isn't for my system.
System update readyness KB947821 didn't change anything either.
Tried sfc/scannow but said there was nothing wrong
don't have an windows dvd anymore to upgrade or re-install
this is really annoying, because my pc is slowing down alot.
Internet pages keep freezing and restarting and such and i think it's
because my updates aren't installed.
Any help?

- MS10-015 (KB977165) security update re-released with new detection logic [FYI]
-
Update: MS10-015 security update re-released with new detection logic
<QP>
...we have revised the installation packages for MS10-015 with new logic
that prevents the security update from being installed on systems if certain
abnormal conditions exist. Such conditions could be the result of an
infection with a computer virus such as the Alureon rootkit. If these
conditions are detected, the update will not be installed and the result
will be a standard Windows Update error. If a user receives this error, they
should go to the following landing page for additional help:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/updates/015
At this time, we have resumed offering the update to all affected systems
via Automatic Updates.
We have also released a Microsoft Fix It as a standalone scanning tool that
reports on the compatibility of a system with the MS10-015 update. The
scanning tool can also be deployed through enterprise deployment systems
allowing administrators to detect compatibility with the update before
deploying broadly. The Fix It and deployment information are available at
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 980966.
