- Vista 64 bit updates from April 13/10
-
I have a wireless network and two laptops. After the updates installed
automatically yesterday on the Vista laptop (the other one has XP) I
discovered I could not connect to an ftp server I use regularly. I couldn't
connect on either laptop although I had Internet access for everything else
on both. Each computer has a stand-alone copy of IPswitch, which is the
program I use. I used system restore and things worked fine. Just to be
sure I tried installing the updates again and got the same result so had to
use system restore again. Of course I don't know which of the updates caused
the problem and without installing and restoring for all 12 or 13 of them I
wondered if anyone else encountered anything like this yesterday.

- KB979683 driving me crazy
-
Win XP Home SP2
Windows update keeps insisting that I download and install KB979683. It is
incapable of accepting that I have already done this, even though the
Windows Update web site's "review your update history" link confirms that I
have now done so some... <counts> ...nine times in the last 24 hours--which,
in itself, is a triumph of hope over experience.
I have tried the solution suggested at
<http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/4a6ea702-47e9-48c6-8460-6d3e9f6d9abe/>
but this hasn't solved the problem. Note: Windows won't accept the "net stop
cryptsvc" command while Zonealarm's "Truevector" service (I think this is
vsmon.exe, version 9.1.007.002) is running. With Zonealarm shut down I can
stop the service and rename catroot2 (no tmp* files are to be found in
Catroot), but Windows Update still keeps demanding I download and install
KB979683.
Aaaaaarrrgh!!!

- Need Help on Win Server 2003 booting and booting
-
Hello,
It turns out to be evident that some "security" Windows Updates are more
dangerous than any potential virus.
After a Windows Update on the end of March, all my Windows Server 2003 where
the update was accepted are booting and booting endlessly.
That's tests servers but their re-install will last more than 10 days...:-(
Do you know some anti-virus which detect these malicious updates and
deactivate them?
I tried TDSSKiller from Kasperski but without any success: it found nothing
Maleware Bytes didn't find anything
The Recovery console didn't recover anything.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your help!
PS: All these servers have a dual boot with Windows XP. XP doesn't have any
problem

- Event ID 16
-
Have this interesting situation. Three Windows 2003 servers behind a
firewall with private 192.168.x.y IP numbers consistently get the eventid 16
mentioned, and fail to update automatically. Manual connections work fine
with no problems or issues. I've followed several suggestions from different
newsgroups and Technet, none of the suggestions have solved the issue. There
is no WSUS server in our site, and all servers go to the microsoft update
site. All servers in the domain with public IP numbers update with no
problems. These three fail, the common link being private addresses.
Any suggestions, pointers to resolution, thoughts appreciated

- Error Code 0x643
-
I just ran a manual Microsoft Update and all the high priority updates were
successful. However, two "Software, Optional" updates failed. They are the
following:
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Update for Windows Server 2003
and Windows XP x86 (KB976569) - Error Code: 0x643
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Update for Windows Server 2003
and Windows XP x86 (KB976570) - Error Code: 0x643
Looking back through my Automatic Update history, it appears these two
updates failed a number of time previously too.
My operating environment is:
Windows XP Service Pack 3
I am also attached to a Windows Home Server (approximately Windows Home
Server 2003 SP 1), an HP487 server.
What can I do to get these .Net Framework updates successfully applied?

- Cannot Get Updates - VISTA
-
Thanks to anyone for any real help.
I have a COMPAQ and as you are probably aware, Defender comes to be
unable to get updates although I am prompted to do so. Last month, I had
this problem and HP CHAT got me 'fixed' albeit over some 2 - 3 hours of back
and forth. Yesterday, I had to attempt the same thing but this time the Rep
was not as 'persistent.' Consequently, I am STILL unable to get Updates.
More importantly, is there a FINAL soultion to this continuing problem?
Using Reps is one thing but still at the end, I'd like to be able to handle
this on my own in the future. Present Error Code is: 0x80072efd. (And
"No," the MSN Website does nothing to help....
THANKS for any help and advice....

- update.inf file missing
-
My system has not been able to install MS Updates for some time. I have been
trying to solve the problem with the recommendations listed in this group. I
have run the bat files listed started and restarted the incryption service
with auto on. In the process I have discovered that my system does not have
the update.inf file. It isn't present even in a cab file. I will probablyh
have to run some process to build it. I have tried to have the auto update
installed but that won't happen because the site already sees it installed.
Question: what process installs update.inf? I am running XP with SP3. I have
also noticed that I cannot display my application, security, and system event
logs.

KB971058 provides a tool and detailed instructions to reset Windows Update
components. According to the article, it applies to Windows XP, Windows
Vista, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008.
Will this tool also work on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2? If not,
is there a tool for them? If not, can we use the detailed "do-it-yourself"
instructions in the KB for Win7/Win2008R2?

- Just wondering whether anyone had found a workaround for Conexant
-
Is there a newer version of the Conexant_Audio_6.14.10.0565 driver
which works yet? (II am using XP home). Sound worked until I installed

I have a dreaded Gateway MX6025 and after a certain time every

that every update I have tried to the Conexant or AC97 driver has

Gateway is disinterested in assisting with a driver which a Windows

The WIN notification went away however,
I am no longer seeing anything about javascript in my taskbar or anywhere

In addition, in my email, OUTLOOK EXPRESS, in an email from, say,

Then they all appear correctly.
Before the initial problem, neither of these things were problems.
Finally, in attempting to access IE, I am getting the message of "not

I realize that I have addressed 3 things here butt, would someone be so kind

- Agent Failed to evaluate Installed Rule
-
I examined the WindowsUpdate.log for the WUAU update process;
1768 b84 Agent *************
1768 b84 Agent ** START ** Agent: Finding updates [CallerId =
AutomaticUpdates]
1768 b84 Agent *********
In examining WindowsUpdate.log I noticed the following WARNING.
1768 b84 Agent WARNING: Failed to evaluate Installed rule, updateId
= {F4B9C883-F4DB-4FB5-B204-3343C11FA021}.100, hr = 8024E001
1768 b84 Agent WARNING: Failed to evaluate Installed rule, updateId
= {BFE5B177-A086-47A0-B102-097E4FA1F807}.102, hr = 8024E001
Near as I can figure;
WU called the Agent to find updates.
Agent fails to evaluate rule.
Agent fails to find any AU updates (CallerId = AutomaticUpdates)
AU search turns up : 0 updates detected
So I was wondering;
[1] Can I use the updateID to manually find the update (on an MS website)
and install the update manually?
[2] Why is the Agent having trouble with evaluating the Installed rule
[3] Is this something I should be concerned about.

- What are COMPAPI, DtaStor and PT enties in log - V2
-
In examining WindowsUpdate.log I noticed the following entities.
COMAPI, AU, PT, Agent, DnldMgr, Handler, DtaStor
Near as I can figure:
AU = Automatic Update
WU = Windows Update
Agent = WU Agent
DnlMgr = WU Download Manager
Handler = WU Install 'handler' : Actually installs the update
But I'm not sure on the following;
COMAPI = ?
DtaStor = ?
PT = ?
Does anyone know what the COMAPI, DtaStor and PT entities are?

- Unable to update
-
Hello,
I keep getting the error message below when I try to check for updates. I
have done and checked every one of these steps multiple times, and it doesn't
help. Can anyone help? Thanks.
The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is
not running:
Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install
high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more
quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with
troubleshooting, if needed)
To make sure these services are running:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click
Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.
6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply.
8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.
9. In the list of services, double-click on Event Log and then click
Properties.
10. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
11. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.

- Vista PRO will not install updates
-
Hi I am running Vista Professional service pack 3 and cannot get updates to
install. I can down load the updates but when it comes to installing they
will not install, tells me the service is not running. I have checked the
services and the WMI, BITS as well as the update services along with all
supporting services are running. I have removed all the updates, thinking
one was messed up, and tried loading them 1 at a time and get the same
response. No error codes just a message that states â??The service is not
runningâ??. Any Ideas here as I am getting Gray hairs over this. Thanks in
advance

My unit went bonkers earlier this year, and a had to reformat it through
DELL. We were able to get most of the Windows updates installed, but this one
keeps showing up, and it won't install. Some of my other programs don't seem
to want to work right at this time either. Does this update have anything to
do with that? Or will I have to have a new Disk sent So I can start over. By
the way, The formating disk that came with this unit, would not refor mat. I
had to call DELL to even get this far... Is this thing DOA?

I let this update install earlier this evening. I did not like the changes
it caused to my screen displays. I attempted to uninstall it but it never
seemed to finish and I am unable to get my system back to where it was
previously. Fonts are very large on all screens and I just want to reverse
this update. Please help. Thank you.
ps - I do not allow updates to automatically install for this very reason.

- RESTORE SYSTEM
-
I believe I was hit by a Virus. Once I noticed it, I turn my computer
complete off. The when I went to reboot, all my microsoft application will
not run. Keep getting "Application not found". When I go to try to do a
restore, I keep getting the "Open application with box". Can't even do a
sytem restore.
My computer is a e-machine and it came with the microsoft programs already
and I did do some updates as well.
I did have Norton 360 but know that is missing as well.
