- Desktop Backgrounds- Have lost the ability to load, install and display additional images
-
When I browse to an image I would like to use for a desktop select it and
click it will not load or display in the Display Properties dialog box nor
will it display on the desktop.
I have even tried by coping selected images into the
C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper, which I have done before, they are still not
displayed.
I have routinely stored images I want to use for a desktop background in the
C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper and have been able to use them at will.
Prior to reloading this particular machine I was able to use any image I
wanted to.
Can anyone give tips on what might be wrong.
The reload was with an original XP SP3 disk.

- repair a windows installation from within ANOTHER installation
-
Ok I hope that I am explaining this correctly:
I had an issue with windows xp, and I wanted to repair it, but for
some reason my disc (dont ask why) didnt give me a choice of
repairing
the windows installation..so I just installed another copy (now c:
\windows.1 lets say) I dont want to go through the hassle of fixing
everything, reinstalling my shortcuts, etc....I just want to be able
to repair my ORIGINAL windows installation c:\windows. Is there a
way, from the windows.1 installation, to repair the c:\windows
installation? like doing the sfc /scanow but to scan the original
windows installation?

- Restrict login to one network user
-
I would have a workstation using XP professional connected to a domain.
I would like to have that workstation only allow login by one specific
network user and the local machine administrator
As things are configured now anyone with a network ID and password could
login there. I want to restrict that to one user who has specific network
security set up.
Can I have the workstation automatically startup to that user and only allow
access to the administrator if safe mode is entered?
Thanks

- Computer doesn't switch off automatically.
-
I have a computer running Windows XP Home.
Until recently to switch this off I'd START > Turn Off Computer >
Turn Off. This would then tell me "Saving your settings" followed by
"Windows is shutting down". The computer would then switch off
automatically.
Then, inexplicably, it stopped switching off automatically but just
hung at "Windows is shutting down" - leaving me to hold down the POWER
button to switch off the computer.
Thinking this was a problem within my Windows I re-installed it
expecting that to resolve the matter - but again it hangs at "Windows is
shutting down".
What must I do to get it to shut down automatically again? My other
computer, also running XP Home, shuts down automatically as I wish this
one to do.
TIA of any replies.

- Laptop won't come out of Stand By
-
Hello
I purchased a used Dell D620 laptop a few months ago. It is working fine
except for the last few days. I put it in Stand By to go to bed. The next
morning I press the power on button and nothing happens. I unplug it and
restart it and it's okay. Any ideas on how to avoid this? It could be
something simple or obvious like how I'm pressing the button or something.
Any ideas?

- Where is Active X?
-
WindowsXP Pro Sp3 IE8
When I try to download a program from a website I often get the message to click on the
yellow bar. I am on my sixth computer and have never seen a yellow bar. There is a
dialog bar telling me to click "here" because the site is trying to download a file. I
click and the process starts but soon a new message says it cannot download the file. I
have tried to locate where to enable Active X but "Help" and "Search" don't give me any
information. I was told to try clicking on the Explorer icon "Properties" where there
will be a check box to enable Active X. I do that but no Active X is listed.

In addition to the toolbar change that I mentioned above
and found the 'fix' for, I see that the screensaver slideshow

that I created, and I want them to be presented sequentially.
Up until today, I had it set for sequential. Now it has reverted
to random sequence, and I can't seem to find the place for
sequential. I think it may have to do with "PLUS!" which I
foolishly bought several years ago. Advice, please?

- Ecplorer's reaction to switch & folder count?
-
Hi,
XP Pro, SP3+
Might anyone be aware how many folders are technically allowed in the root
directory of a disk drive? I have a drive D, a separate partition with C
that has some 186 objects according to win Explorer's status bar. It is
entirely comprised of folders.
The shortcut has the correct flags to automatically drop down the contents
of the drive when it is opened. As I was rebuilding the machine, all was
"normal" and the drive folder dropped down as expected when the shortcut was
used. However, by the time I got finished Restoring all the files to it, it
was no longer doing that. Using the Shortcut, it opens in the Folders View,
which is fine, but it will not drop down the list of folders on the drive.
I deleted all but aout 25 directories and it started to work again. Then
I restored the removed directories, and it no longer dropped down the
folders list again. The only conclusion is that there must be a numerical
limit where win Explorer will stop expanding down.
I copied all the folders to drive E, on another SATA drive, and got the
same results as above.
Anyone know what that limit may be?
It was the same with my old computer too, which I assume all along was some
vague corruption somewhere, but apparently not. That machine was XP Pro SP2+
when the problem came about, and SP3 at the end of its use.
Thanks for any information you may have. If I'm close to that limit,
whatever it may be, I'll do some house-keeping to get under it, but if I'm
way over then I guess I'll live with it; it's not that big an annoyance.
Thanks for any assistance,
Twayne

- add and remove programs
-
Hi, in an effort make more space on my pc AND to delete programs that I do
not use any more or care to use, I decided to switch one of my malware
programs for another one. I actually wanted to try something different and
hopefully seemed like it is less size than AVG.
I installed avast and when I went to uninstall AVG, the size of Avast in the
add and remove programs was 114 MB !!! AVG was somehting like 27MG.
WHen I downloaded avast it was alot smaller in size than AVG so why the
difference now when removing it? I barely have had Avast for 14 hours.
This question pertains to alot of other programs that when you go to
download, it is one size. When you go to Add & RP, its a different size. Can
someone explain?
thx in advance

- Dvd decoder
-
Windows XP SP3
IE 7
It is my understanding that my PC does not have a DVD decoder. I am
wondering if this is what I need to install software (e.g. PC games)on DVD
Rom discs like I am able to install CD Rom software?
In Device Manager it shows DVD/CD-Rom, SAMSUNG 248F. I have read in
various groups that DVD's can be played via Windows Media Player. But, when
clicking the tools option in the Media Player 11, the DVD/CD option is greyed
out. I assume I do need a decoder for that.
I want to be able to install DVD-rom software. Most everything I see that I
want is this type. It is very hard to find the games I want to install on
CD-rom.
Also, I download via Standard User and install via my Administrative acct.
and go on the internet via Standard User. Some games I installed are also
listed on my Standard User acc. to play. I would like to play all of them
via the Standard User. Is there a way to set up for this? Is it safe to
play PC games logged onto an Admininstrative acct.? Because one has a
popup at the beginning saying "You are logged in as standard user, you need
to connect to the internet to enjoy other options" and this is the only one
that allows me to play as Standard User.
Thanking you in Advance for your help and being there

- Computer won't boot
-
I have an older computer with a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard that
I home-built a few years back. I recently built a new computer and
have been keeping the old one alive until I get the new one all
checked out and settled in.
Yesterday the old computer wouldn't boot. It makes a BEEP about one
second long during the boot process but won't go any farther. The
drive lights flash and the monitor goes through its first sign of
lighting up, after I turn the computer on, but this is as far as it
goes. The monitor goes black and the activity lights on the front of
the computer flash a few times, then everything stops.
I've tried using the original Windows XP Pro installation disk, and
also a second boot disk that I slipstreamed with SP3 on it. Neither
boot disk will initiate a start-up process. The CD drive light flashes
a few times then quits and nothing more happens after the BEEP.
Any ideas as to what I might try next?
Thanks, Gordon

- Fail to hibernate..more evidence

I'm opening a new thread on this subject, after a week or
so hiatus, to simplify the illustration of the problem.
I shut down all programs and watch the system go to Screen Saver
mode. Then I go away, and when I return hours later, instead
of going through the Power Options sequence as expected, I find
the screen on, in regular Desktop mode.
So I go to the Event Viewer, and under System I find a zillion
events, the last page of which are these:

Please note the references to CRT and Tcpip, and the numbers referring
to the nature of the Error. Note ati2mtag, which I believe refers to
the Power Options. It seems that, every 45 minutes or so, the CRT
error occurs, and 3 seconds later There is a Service Control Manager
"Information" entry. Any clue as to what I can change in Power Options
to try to track down these events? My timing sequence now is
20 minutes>>30 minutes>>45 minutes>>2 hours.
There is a similar bunch of error messages under Security as well.

"Method 2: Disable or uninstall any previously installed keyboard

before i do anything, i wanted to check first. i don't know where to

right click on k/b, then right clock on"hid keyboard device" then uninstall
it ? i'm betting i'm way off here.

drive thrashing" I've ever come across, particularly when I open up an
IE8 webpage. Even if I open up just a single web page and it's
sitting idle, the hard drive thrashing is terrible. It gets so bad
that often my computer freezes (or very close to), and I have to
reboot.
I've already done the following:
Defragged both partitions, more than once.
Scan disk on both partitions (more than once) - no bad sectors found.
I don't have any Norton Programs installed on my system.
Turned off "Indexing" in System Properties in the Advanced Settings.
Turned off System Restore.
When I enter Task Manager > Performance tab, the PF (Page File) usage
is often around 300MB.
When checking the processes running using "Process Explorer", it only
seems to be IE8 that's doing the most processing.
If there's any advice anyone can offer, I'd like to hear it.

- Malwarebytes
-
I've checked on the Web page but can't find a clear answer:
Is this a virus *and* spyware scanner, or just a spyware scanner?
They say "malware" over and over, and to em that implies both, but
they never actually said what they mean as far as i could see.
I raise the point because a friend claims that Malwarebytes Anti-
malware does spyware scanning only, not virus scanning

- Restore System Files
-
I have a computer I am working on that is infected by viruses in the system
files. I know there is a command to check the system files and replace
corrupt or missing ones with the originals. I am running antivirus on it
right now, but need this command. Anybody know what comman/app this is that
checks the system files?

- Window control elements (minimize, maximize, close, scroll bars, etc)
-
The issue I'm seeing is actually on an NT4 server with IE6-sp1, but I'm
asking here because there aren't enough people following NT4 newsgroups
any more, and I figure that NT is similar enough to XP in this
situation.
The problem is that these graphic symbols or control elements are
screwed up:
- window minimize, maximize, and close buttons (upper right-hand
corner of any window)
- scroll bar up and down arrows, arrows for drop-down lists (the
actual small black arrow)
- radio buttons and check boxes
are screwed up and seem to have been replaced with numbers or letters
(in the case of the first two items) and radio buttons and check boxes
are so mangled that it's hard to tell when a check-box or radio button
has been set or is empty.
The system in question has been like this for probably the last 7 years,
and I have no ides what might have triggered or caused it.
What part of an NT / XP system is responsible for rendering those window
and menu-interface objects?
I've re-applied the last service-pack for NT4 (SP6a) and re-installed
IE6-sp1. I've changed the video card in the system (from ATI to Nvidia)
and installed the correct video drivers.
What API, GDI, kernel, DLL, VXD, activex, directx, or font files (etc)
plays a role in rendering these particular window control elements or
objects?

- How can I scan a text form into a fillable word doc?

I have an HP psc 2210xi all-in-one printer/scanner. I am trying to scan an
application (job application) onto my pc (Dell - XP operating system) as a
fillable usable form that I can make changes to. I am using MS Office suite

- Questions regarding the IE Critical Patch
-
Dear Gurus,
I learned of the need to patch IE (version 6, 7 and 8) and need help.
There are two versions of patches --
A. MS09-072
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS09-072.mspx
B. MS10-002
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS10-002.mspx
Both deal with IE 6, 7 and 8.
Question:
1. Do I apply *BOTH* patches or just one of them?
2. If only need apply only one patch, do I apply A (MS09-072) or B
(MS10-002)?
Please help !
Much oblige !!

- Can't connect to my wireless home network?
-
Hi all,
been having PC trouble in waves lately... not sure why... anyway, here's
the current saga. I can not connect one of my PC's to my home network.
Here's the whole story...
OK, first, I had a problem with a mouse driver that I posted here about
earlier. I ended up just "fixing" it myself by imaging a clean HDD that
I had laying around for the exact same computer (I'd bought it for parts
when I needed a screen backlight, and later a keyboard) and reinstalling
all my apps and then moving my documents back over. At the same time I
turned it into a dual boot w/ Linux. That part of it works fine,
although that took me the better part of a day to accomplish, and I
wouldn't have bothered had I not had both a clean install and a spare
250GB HDD laying around.
At the same time, I also purchased another used laptop because I
realized how down-spec mine was, and esp. having a EIDE HDD and limited
memory upgrade capability that would make future upgrades
difficult/expensive/pointless. That "new" computer is running WinXP Pro
and was working fine until today (of course, I've only had it since
Saturday morning, but still.) So I've had two computers running
simultaneously since Saturday, as well as the girl's desktop. All were
good up until today.
Today, I left work early because of a bad head cold and sat down to
check my email and found that my wireless router had bricked itself
sometime between breakfast and 3 PM. Old router was a Netgear something
or other. Tried everything, it's a brick, power light doesn't even come
on. So much for taking it easy! So I ran out and bought a new wireless
router, essentially the same spec but this time Cisco/Linksys.
Installed it and used the same SSID and key as the old network so as not
to have to reconfigure the various computers - with one exception. I
misremembered the encryption type and set it to WPA initially and then
realized my error when the computer wouldn't connect. Rather than
setting it to WEP, I thought I might as well just change the various PCs
to WPA instead - after all, there's only three in the house (although
one is running two different OS's) - so I changed the new laptop, my old
laptop's Linux system, and then went upstairs to change the girl's
antique Sony desktop, when I found that there was no WPA option on her
computer. Which is odd, because she's running XP SP3 just like me. So
then I go back and change everything back to WEP, and everything is all
fine and happy again - EXCEPT THE NEW LAPTOP. (the desktop, and both
the Linux and XP OS's on the old laptop are connecting fine.) Which is
even more odd because that's the computer that I used to configure said
router. I get a pop up at the bottom of the screen that says "Windows
was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network (network
name)" and if I keep the Wireless Network Connection window open it's
hung on "Validating Identity" - neither of which item I've ever seen before.
Anyone have any explanation and/or fix for this?
Keep in mind that this laptop was coexisting happily with the old router
all weekend, this is something new that's occurred since installing the
new router, although other PC's that I didn't mess with at all are
connected to it and talking (as evidenced by my ability to send this post.)
thanks,
Nate

- Purging ThreatFire from register
-
XP (mce)SP3
Dell Dimension DIMC521, 64 X2Dual
I ran chkdsk: Mycomputer, C:, Properties, Tools, Check now,
with automatic system fix and recover bad sectors. This is
the first time I ever did this.
After it finished the task (1 - 2 hours later), I read the
event folder (system) and found an error that was repeated
many time. Here is the error message:
//Error service control manager. The ThreatFire service
failed to start due to failure to find the file specified.//
Background: I have a misty memory of installing ThreatFire
(TF) some years ago and later uninstalling it. Evidently
the process left references strewn thruout the registry.
I opened regedit, which I don't feel at all comfortable
doing, and did a search for 'TF'. It found many instances
in the software section. I didn't bother to search all the
other sections.
I would like some sage advice.
Item 1). Since my system is working okay with all that
residue inside should I just leave the register alone or
should I try to clean out all the references to ThreatFire?
After considering whatever advice I receive about Item 1, I
will decide to ignore TF or purge TF and will ask again at
that point for help in proceeding.
Thank you so much.

- Very Slow PC
-
I have a Dell XPS-Z 866Mhz Pentium 3, with 384mb and a 20Gig hard
drive that I use for the web, and I've been having speed issues with
my system that are worse than usual.
Everything which includes loading pages from the internet, closing
windows(if they close at all), switching between tabs, starting up
apps, closing apps, etc. has become really sluggish.
My DSL is slow to begin with and is not even as fast as dial-up was
when I was using it over a decade ago.(But that is obviously a Verizon
issue).
I try to stay away from anti-virus apps and the like because they have
traditionally made my system worse than it was before their
installation and use.
But this time I took a chance and installed AVG, and even
SUPERAntiSpyware.
They didn't seem to do much, but that AVG "Resident Shield alert"
window pops up constantly. (Usually when I attempt to open a file).
Many of which I can no longer open or they open with difficulty. For
instance when I attempt to open mspaint I get a pop-up box that says
Missing Shortcut". All this while the AVG "Resident Shield
alert"(Multiple threat detection) windows list a variety of files that
are supposed to be infected.(Usually by something called "Win32/
Virut)." It seems like all of the files I have are infected. I can't
open the calculator or the calender because they can't be found.
I also can no longer open a text file from my desktop without the
"Open with" box popping up.
(Last month I had to do a reinstall after installing Avast because it
made my system useless).
It looks as though I'll have to reinstall XP again, but thought I'd
ask for any ideas on how to keep these problems from occurring all
over again.
Thanks.

-
I'm getting the error WMI windows management instructmentation module is not
installed when I
try to start windows management services.
WHEN I RUN
setup for SQL Server Express 2005. It says configuration checker cannot be
executed.
I try to start windows management services and it says could not start
windows management instrumentation service on local computer.
I searched for wmi.dll on my computer and I have it in
c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386
can I copy this file somewhere into the system so that it will start windows
management services?
Do you know if the .Net framework can be installed on Windows XP Pro or does
it need to be Windows XP professional?
I have Windows XP Service Pak 3.

- Laptop won't boot
-
Hello, I have a Dell Latitude E5400 laptop running XP. It recently had a
virus. I did all the normal things to remove it, but I suspect that in the
process, a system file may have been deleted. Anyhow, now when I try to
boot up it gets as far as Windows starting, then I get the BSOD. I have
tried F12 and setting it to boot to a DOS prompt, but it still tries to
start Windows. I also tried booting from CD and put in the Windows XP disk,
but it seems to just skip it all together and attemps to start Windows
again. Any suggestions? Thanks!

- Lost Task Manager
-
WindowsXP Pro SP3 IE8
There was a program called Internet Security 2010 which came from somewhere. It
persisted and could not be eliminated or canceled. I use Vipre as my anti-virus program
and it listed it as a high risk entry along with a Trojan. I cleaned them both and then
found that my Task Manager is not available. In doing a Search for files or folders I do
not find taskmgr.exe. Is there a way to recover it? I use it very often.

- Audio config
-
I need to point the audio setup at a specific bit of software, rather
than an installed sound card.
(Sounds and Audio/Audio/Default Device)
Normally it's an option that gets selected via the GUI.
However, while I can set the default device to the bit of s/w I want,
that is only after it loads on startup, which is too late for it to be
selected automatically, and I have to go to control panel and do it
manually.
Is there some command line I can use, for example, something like:
"set Sounds and Audio/Audio/Default Device = mySoftware"?
instead of what appears at present
"Sounds and Audio/Audio/Default Device == RealTek Audio output"

- Event viewer
-
You nice folks led me to Event Viewer not too long ago, and
in studying it, I find under Applications that Automatic Live
Update is being run every 3 hours. It isn't my Norton Anti-
Virus Live Update, and I do not allow Windows Live Update to
run. Or at least I think I have it set so that I run Windows
Update when I choose to do so.
How can I track down what is running so often, and preventing
my system from hibernating as a result?
Thank you.
