- Conficker infection on network - advice wanted on removal/protection
-
I posted a few weeks ago but have done some further work/consideration
about this issue.
I've just taken on a new client whose network has been left in pretty
bad shape by their previous IT support provider. They have
approximately 11 XP workstations and 1 SBS 2003 DC.
To sum up the state they're in:
- No server or workstation Windows Updates installed for a very long
time (still on XP SP2)
- AVG Personal Edition on all workstations, AVG SBS on the server but
expired May 2010.
- No logon passwords needed/very poor passwords on workstations
- Conficker virus infection on all computers.
The previous IT firm seemed to give up on the client once they knew
they had a Conficker infection.
I want to rid them of the Conficker virus first of all. My plan of
attack is as follows:-
One workstation at a time:
1. Format the workstation. Reinstall Windows.
2. Install all available Windows Updates.
3. Install business class anti-virus software
4. Implement additional protection to prevent reinfection (see below)
5. Ensure complex logon password
6. Join the workstation back into the domain and configure for the
user.
By doing this I'm hoping to gradually one workstation at a time
eradicate the virus from the network and prevent reinfection once the
workstation is re-introduced to the network. Additionally doing one at
a time to prevent mass downtime.
The advice I would appreciate from you guys is:
1. I want to PREVENT re-infection. This is crucial. As well as updates
and AV software I plan on doing the following:
- Complex local admin password
- Block Autorun
Is there anything else I can do on the workstation before
reintroducing it to the network to PREVENT reinfection?
2. Is this the most effective method of removing the virus from the
whole network?
Thanks in advance.

- Home Network question.
-
Hi,
I have 2 desktop PCs.
XP - connection to router is cable.
W7 - connection is wireless.
Both work well.
I bought a new network printer.
1. created home network on XP named "HOME".
2. created home network on W7 named "HOME".
3. connected printer to XP via USB cable.
4. installed drivers, made it shared, named "Brother" - printer works
well.
5. installed printer drivers on W7, made it shared, named "Brother".
Problem - printer does not print from W7.
I wonder if the home network is actually working.
Am I suppose to see XP and the printer when I go to W7 network
settings...? Because when I go to see what is on the network in W7, I
do not see anything and the troubleshooting does not reveal any
issues.
Any advice...?
Thank you, Boy.

- Computer crashing - I can see the problem but not fix
-
So, my computer has been crashing at random times. I used to be once
or twice a week,
now several times a day. I found theevent log, and most of the red x
symbols have automatic windows update listed. So, I turned it off.
Doesn't seem to crash as often, but each time it does, I check the
settings, and it is back to automatic update every day at midnight.
I just reset it this afternoon, turned off the setting, and opened it
again to confirm that it was turned off. At 11:20pm,. it crashed
again. I rebooted, checked the log, and it says automatic windows
update. And the setting is turned on.
How do I turn it off permanently? How is it turning itself back on?
Either that, or how can I get it happy again with the automatic
updates so that it doesn't crash the system?

- chkdsk parameters?
-
I just had a new hard drive installed on my WinXP computer. I installed a
bunch of programs and datafiles and then tried to back up with Acronis True
Image. It stopped at around 45% with an error message of
E000101F4: Failed to read data from the sector 88,109,519 of the hard disk 1
I'm guessing that there are bad sectors on this new drive. Would running
CHKDSK C:/r be the right way to go at this point? Are there any other
parameters I should include (especially so I can get a report on where the
problems were)?
Thank you!

- computer turning off
-
My WinXP Dell desktop computer, which I've had for seven years, has started
turning itself off at night. I thought at first that a program was simply
freezing the screen, but that's not it. It's fine when I leave it at night;
but when I come back in the morning, it's off. At that point, the fan isn't
running; and when I turn it back on, the fan starts up.
Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot the problem myself, or do I need
to take it to a repair shop? I'm in the middle of a work project right now
and would like to keep the computer running for at least another month or
two if possible; then I'll have the time to research a new one. I do have a
laptop that I can use while this one is being worked on.
Thank you!

- Windows XP printer port question
-
I have a program that runs on Windows 98 to control a relay device
attached to the printer port and was wondering if I upgraded the
computer to Windows XP Professional, could the program run in a window
and continue to control the printer port and allow me to connect a USB
printer to a USB port?
Or, else, I am running Windows 7 on my main system and can not use the
features on my HP Officejet v40xi Printer/Scanner/Copier/Fax machine
and need to either connect it to the other system and install the
software on it to fax/scan/copy. Can I network the system with Windows
98 with my desktop with Windows 7?
Or, if the answer to the original question works, can I access the
printer on the other machine with the Windows 7 system? Software
running the relay control box and printer/scanner/fax/copier on
Windows XP or Windows 98 and Windows 7 on main system, network them
together to access all software?

Triple Test Quadruple Security
SILICON POWER Armor A70
A walk through fire without a burn, Received excellent reviews from
famous Hungary online video media.

H
Since Silicon Power has announced Tough Marine Warrior =96 Armor A70
Portable Hard Drive, it received multiple media awards. Armor A70
continues the spirit of Armor series, the Armor A70 is in compliance
with US military standard MIL-STD-810F 516.5 procedure IV (Transit
drop test), and also in compliance with IEC529 IPX7 waterproof tests.
Besides, Armor A70 also features dust and pressure-proof features.
Seeing is believing, this time, HOC, hardver-teszt.hu and Gamestar,
all of them are well-known online media in Hungary, testing Armor A70
personally to show us the strength of Tough Marine Warrior.
In order to test if A70 can really undergo the unexpected situation
such as rain and liquid-spillage, the reviewers of hardver-teszt and
Gamestar threw A70 into a bucket full of water without hesitation.
After a while, he took out A70 and tested it. Obviously, this test
didn=92t affect the perfect performance of A70 at all.
Suddenly, we saw A70 drop out from almost eight stories high, fallen
on the sidewalk. And then we connected with computer again. It proved
that the abilities of A70 to withstand shock and vibration force were
undoubted.
It=92s not the end; here came the tougher task after. The anchor of HOC
drove a RV weighted almost 3 liters, rolling on A70 back and forth
cruelly. Not only was the appearance flawless, but also maintained the
best condition to read and write data.
Suffered from those test, we proved that A70, under the elegant and
fashionable veil, still possess the practical characteristics of
water, pressure, vibration and dust proof. Moreover, Gamestar also
impressed by SP widget accompanied with the A70. All of those
Hungarian media can=92t help to admire the high performance of Armor
A70. =93Armor A70 is almost an unbeatable portable warrior!=94

- High level of interrupts on PC
-
Of late I have begun to notice a high level of interrupts on my PC.
Sometimes about 50% of CPU utilization goes on hardware interrupts
when I check it with Process Explorer.
I am currently trying to copy a 2Gb file and the time for copying
keeps fluctuating between 80min and 30min and a 7200RPM SATA drive.
What could be the most likely problem?

- printer not printing
-
I'm using WinXP and an HPLaserJet4100 on my desktop computer. Suddenly, my
printer won't print. It's on, it's connected, and until yesterday it was
printing just fine.
I don't know if it's coincidence, but yesterday we had major thunderstorms
(with one lightning strike that went through the roof of a house across the
alley), and I lost my landline. It was just restored this afternoon, along
with my internet service (I have DSL). The repairman said the line between
the alley and my house had to be replaced.
The error message is "This document failed to print." It goes on to name the
job, the printer, etc.
I turned the printer and the computer off and then back on. I also tried
printing from my laptop, which is networked to my desktop computer. It
appears to send the order to the desktop computer, but it just lands in a
queue and doesn't print.
My husband checked all the physical connections, and they seem fine.
Any idea of what I should do next?
Thank you!

As one of the industry's leading manufacturer, Silicon Power announces
the incorporation of SP Widget on all of their USB flash drives. The
new SP Widget is a free download and is smarter and easier to use than
Smart Kit (previous SP application software). The new SP Widget can
maximize your SP USB flash drive's potential by making data storage
more intelligent and convenient!
Combining hardware and software to maximize each other's potentials,
Silicon Power is set to revolutionize the application of USB flash
drives. Silicon Power's SP Widget features seven main functions, such
as My documents / Synchronization & backup, Folder backup (including
My favorites), Email backup, AES 256bit data encryption, Norton
Internet Security 2010 and PC-lock. Through a few simple setup steps,
Silicon Power's SP Widget will turn your USB flash drive into an
intelligent storage machine backing up all your important data.
One of the most commonly used functions on a USB flash drive is data
transfer and backup. Users can backup "My documents" or designate any
other folder(s) to backup between the PC and USB drive for effective
and convenient management. This provides users with a convenient and
effective way to manage PC / USB flash data. If you want to take your
emails in Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express Mail, the Email backup
function is perfect for you. The backup not only allows you to take
your emails with you, it also serves as a emergency restore backup!
The main issue of computer data today is privacy! In the case where
you've lost your USB flash drive, the AES 256bit encryption will
provide maximum protection against unauthorized access.

- NIC
-
Having somehow lost my onboard NIC (after trying out Ubuntu from a
CD), I installed a 3Com PCI card but cannot get it to connect to the
internet.
If I leave the tcp/ip protocols set to automatic, it comes up with
some weird IP Address, 169.254.75.23; 255.255.0.0; and I get a
'limited or no connectivity' messsage.
If I set them manually; 192.168.0.13; 255.255.255.0; 192.168.0.1, I
get a 'Local Area Connection 3 is now connected, Speed 100 Mbps'
message.
However, it will still not connect to the internet and I get a 'Server
not found' message.
My laptop connects wirelessly to the same router and also connects
happily if I hard wire it.
Any thoughts or solutions (especially solutions) please.

- hard drive dying
-
The ancient hard drive in my WinXP computer is probably dying. I have a new
drive to install. However, I was hoping to get one more complete
backup/clone last night with Acronis True Image. The backup to an external
USB drive didn't finish, however; and the screen wouldn't unblank. I finally
unplugged the drive, turned off the computer, and turned it back on. It came
on OK and is working OK.
I thought I'd do a backup of at least my datafiles onto a DVD--but the
program I was using found errors (unspecified) and couldn't finish. I do
have a clone from 4 days ago, and I've backed up the most important
datafiles, Outlook Express, and Favorites.
Should I try running CHKDSK/R? Or is there something else I should do
instead that might allow me to make one more backup/clone?
Thank you!

2 Terabyte memory cards coming in 2011
1 TB and 2 TB SD cards to follow the first 64 GB SDXC card
The SD Association, created by Panasonic, SanDisk and Toshiba, had
last year announced the SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity)
technology that theoretically allows for storage capacity upto 2 TB,
or 2000 GB. With this, memory card storage capacity is all set to take
a big jump from the existing 32 GB to a whopping 2 TB. The prices of 2
TB SDXC cards are going to be a bit high in the beginning, but we know
that they won=92t stay high for long as high volume production kicks in.
A time frame has not been announced for the release of the 2 TB SD
card.
Current SD memory card storage capacities top off at 32GB in SDHC
cards, while some companies are already launching 64 GB memory cards.
However, 2 TB SD cards would be able to store about 100 HD movies, 480
hours of high definition video recording, 136,000 fine quality photos
according to Wired.com SDXC technology will also raise data transfer
speeds from the current high of 30 Mbps on a 200x SD card to 104 Mbps,
although the technology will be worked upon to further raise speeds to
300 Mbps.
At the CES 2010, Panasonic had launched its 32 GB and 64 GB SD cards.
The company said that they will try to introduce their first 1 TB SD
card by 2010-end, followed by 2 TB SDXC cards in 2011. If they stick
to that, we can expect their competitors also to introduce their 1 TB
and 2 TB SD cards around the same time.
Of course, we have yet to see the 32 GB DC cards or micro SD cards in
the market. Once they are here, they wold be followed by 64 GB and 128
GB cards. So it is definitely going to be a while before we see the
first 2 terabyte memory card.
Panasonic has already announced that it intends to produce a 64GB card
using SDXC technology that may be launched by next year. Sony and
SanDisk are also set to collaborate to make SDXC technology a part of
Sony=92s Memory Stick range, so along with the first 2TB SD card, we are
likely to see the first 2 TB memory stick too.
The 2TB card will become very useful when it releases as modern
consumer electronics such as camcorders, digital cameras and music
devices are producing high quality data that also translates into lots
of memory space. The only drawback the SDXC technology would face
would be its incompatibility with older devices.
Direct benefits of a 2 TB SD card? Very high quality 1080p HD video
recording in camcorders, digicams that shoot photos at 22 megapixel
resolution and in RAW format, and high quality audio files on your
music players.

- Weird driver problem
-
A friend of mine bought a CNC machine and hooked his laptop to it with a
tailor made usb (laptop end) to RS232 15 pin (CNC end) cable. The guy
who made the cable is a CNC expert and has no problem uploading
instructions to the CNC machine from his own laptop when using that cable.
My friend's laptop, on the other hand, generates a "Found new hardware"
wizard which asks for the location of drivers for a "usb-serial
controller D". I've looked all over the internet for such drivers but
can find nothing in the way of drivers that work. Also, I don't know
what the wizard is referring to because we didn't install any such
controller into my friend's laptop. He's running XP Pro SP3 on the
laptop and we can't get it online because of its location. We can move
the laptop into his house and get it online, but since the CNC machine
weights over 9,000 lbs. and fills a room, we can't move it along with
the laptop so that the computer will generate the wizard.
When the wizard is generated, it doesn't matter whether or not the CNC
machine is fired up or not. If you disconnect the usb to serial cable
before starting the computer, the wizard doesn't pop up. However, the
second you connect the cable to the laptop, whether or not the CNC
machine is powered up, the wizard appears.
Does anybody know what's going on here?
TIA

- Spacebar
-
The Spacebar, due to its distinctive shape and length, is probably the
most prone to sticky substance (e.g. Coke)-caused slow responsiveness,
as a single sticky point can slow down the whole bar.
Also, unlike the Enter key, the Spacebar doesn't have a duplicate.
I think keyboard manufacturers can horizontally divide the long
Spacebar into two or three (or even more) shorter Spacebars, each
producing the same Spacebar scan code. If multiple Spacebars are
pressed simultaneously, they will be considered as a single bar.

Hello All!
I know this is OT but there appear to be no recent posts on m.p.
newsgroups other than m.p.outlookexpress.general. Has everyone been
persuaded that the groups don't exist or has MS somehow worked out how
to drop the groups from the 'net?

- Power Management on a Laptop.
-
Of course, I have a laptop running XP SP3. A Dell Inspiron 6000.
I'm watching the temp on the CPU go up/down as I use the unit and the
cpu switches from 1.32 Ghz to 2 Ghz. Obviously cooling off at the
slower speed. All this is fine.
My question is, the HD heats up too. And I've tried setting the power
scheme to shutdown the drive after 3 minutes when on batteries.
However watching the HD light, it never stops blinking for more than 30
seconds, okay maybe 1 minute. So if there is constant (in my terms)
activity on the HD, how will it ever spin down? Seems like a useless
feature with Windows!
TIA.

- Powercfg's processor-throttle settings
-
I've noticed, especially on my laptop where it matters most, that
Windows XP's processor throttling settings tend to go missing after some
unspecified amount of time has passed. These are the advanced settings
that can only be set through the command-line utility powercfg.exe, but
not through the standard graphical utility. After a few months, I often
find that I need to reset the throttle settings on various schemes
because they've somehow reset themselves to default. Powercfg is a bitch
to use, more so than most other CLI utils in general: extremely finicky
about the order of command-line switches, etc.
Any idea what causes just these throttle settings to get reset, but the
rest of the settings are totally fine?

- DVD stuttering
-
I've begun playing DVD movies on my WinXP laptop with VLC Media Player.
Today, a brand new DVD kept "stuttering" all the way through. That is, both
video and sound would completely stop and then, after a few seconds, resume.
I thought the DVD was bad--but I played it on my WinXP desktop computer with
the same media player, and it seemed to run mostly OK (although there were
some places where I sensed very slight hesitations).
Could it be a marginal DVD? And if so, is there a way of making it work
better? (It's a DVD I bought a couple months ago, so I'm not sure I can
return it.) I've played a few other DVD movies on the laptop without any
stuttering.
Thank you!

- Back up question...
-
Hello...
I am in search of advice in terms of back up software for our home. We have
2 pc's running XP, a laptop (wireless) running XP, and another laptop
(wireless) running Vista.
I have a SimpleTech external hard drive, USB, connected to my PC, with 4
folders, one for each of the PC's.. (eg: Vin, wife, kid1, kid2)
Any suggestions on automatic back up software? I've been doing each unit
manually... it's not a good idea, we tend to forget...free would help very
much as well.
Thoughts on Comodo? Hinxsoft?

- Battery life in cordless keyboards and mice.
-
Hello All!
This is a typical description of a Logitech product:"The Logitech
Cordless Desktop Wave Pro Keyboard ? all you have to do is connect it
via a USB port. Expect the battery life to last you approximately 3
years, so you can use the keyboard as much as you want without any
worries at all! "
I wish I could find a wireless keyboard and mouse whose batteries last
so long under realistic conditions by which I mean switched on 12 hours
a day, seven days a week.. Has anyone got any ideas? Mostly, I tend to
find "lasts up to a year", which is doubtless true since "up to a year"
could describe a few weeks.
I find it very difficult to get realistic information in computer
stores.

Hi, I have a* 2.8 GHz P4 intel processor* with an *ASUS p5rd1-vm* mother
board and an *ATI radeon (128Mb) *Graphics Card with *768 Mb of RAM*. I
recently put in a new hard disk and everything was running fine while I
was using XP. I tried to install 7, but it did not work, so I decided to
revert back to XP. After installation everything seemed fine till I
checked on my hard drives. Drive H which should have a capacity of 85GB,
shows only 720kb in size when it's properties are checked. All the other
partitions seem to be working just fine. Also, when you click on the
drive, It asks you whether you want to format the drive. If you say Yes,
then another pop up appears "This Drive cannot be formatted". Any ideas?

- DVD problem
-
WIN XP SP3 plus all updates.
Back in Dec 2009 I purchased a new LiteOn IHAP322-22x DVD.
I have recently been using it to boot my computer as I have been getting
intermittent BSODs so I have been using an iso boot disc when needed.
Having been able today to start the computer, without needing the boot disc,
I took the opportunity to do a backup.
After doing this I checked to see that all was safely on the disc only to
find it was blank - nothing showing. I put the disc into a laptop and all
the backup folders were there.
I have since put in other different types of discs, DVD Video, music video,
other backup discs and saved text discs and all are blank.
I have also checked in hardware manager - device working properly - no
warnings - tried to update driver[Microsoft 5.1.2535.0] but the one I have
is it - no driver to offer in roll back. Tried the troubleshooter and no
help there.
Before I get in touch with the retailer, I was wondering if the BSODs etc
could have any bearing on the DVD player? OR I have done something
stupid[likely] somewhere else.

- a statement on multiple backups
-
I've always stated that having multiple backups is a good idea, well last
week I found out how good of an idea it was, I had recently installed a new
dual core cpu ie faster better etc. I made a backup before I did the upgrade,
I also installed a new larger hd for primary drive C, well to my sad suprise
I found my latest update to my backups corrupted everything, and I had only
one copy of my backups ie Image of Drive C. anyway I ran into multiple
issues, bad SATA cable, etc, it's taken me all week to get it up and
operating, when Id rather be outside playing in the sunshine. and Monday I
need to start over cause I need to install SATA drivers to access my
utilities hd, which has loads of documents and cool tools.
So I really really urge for people to make multiple backups and verify them
afterwards.

I've taken to listening to podcasts on my three WinXP fully updated

increase the volume for these podcasts? I looked at Sounds and Audio Devices

- Multiple USB Ports.
-
Hello All!
My machine runs XP but has only two USB 2.0 ports. Some of the hardware
that I have will function quite well on one of the two USB 1.0 ports but
really, I think I need about 6 USB ports. There seem to be two
possibilities: install two more USB 2.0 cards or use a plug-in multiport
attachment. That last requires installation of a driver. I wonder what
would be the best way to go?
I'd be grateful for advice.

I would like to give access to the Internet for clients in my waiting room.
But is there a way to stop carrying out huge downloads? They would be using

Is there a wireless router out there which can set a download limit for a
